Attention is drawn particularly to the average life-in-use of each type of
product, which, together with the pack-size, should enable prescribers to
calculate their patients’ requirements with reasonable accuracy.

Only basic information on each product has been provided and prescribers
may on occasions wish to seek further information about certain products,
e.g. when assessing a patient for the first time. If so, this is always available
from the manufacturers. (Addresses and phone numbers are given at the
end of this part.) Information might also be sought from community nurses
and community pharmacists. Where possible, manufacturers’/`supplier’
codes have been shown, but prescribers should note that the order numbers
shown are not necessarily the full codes for the items that they may wish to
order. This is particularly true of Urinal Systems, where additional code
numbers are usually necessary to denote variations from the basic design
and individual prices.

listed), incontinence garments, skin wipes and occlusive devices such as
female vaginal devices and penile clamps are not prescribable under the
Drug Tariff provisions.

The incontinence sheaths (also known as penile sheaths and external catheters) listed
below, are, except where indicated, of the soft, flexible, latex type. Sheaths are
available with and without fixing devices that may be applied externally (around the
outside of the sheath) or internally (around the penis between the skin and the
sheath). A list of fixing devices and other adhesion products is included.
Each Sheath may be left in place for 1 to 3 days between changes.

LEG BAGS
The leg bags listed are suitable for collection of urine from indwelling catheters or
incontinence sheaths. They are intended for daytime use although the larger bags may
have adequate capacity for overnight use by some patients. The bags may be worn in
different positions on the leg and the intended position (e.g. thigh, knee or calf) will
determine the length of the inlet tube. The bags are attached to the leg by means of
straps (included with each pack), which are generally either latex or foam with Velcro
fasteners.
NOTE: Plastic leg bags identified in the list with an asterisk * may on average be used for
5-7 days. With proper care and cleansing rubber leg bags are re-usable for 4-6 months.
