Lockheed. He is now retired and
makes his home in Nevada City,

from Iraq and is now a full-time

Jeff Saville (80), a commander
in the Chaplain Corps of the U.S.
Navy, was recently assigned to
serve as fleet chaplain for U.S.
Third Fleet based in San Diego,
Calif. He supervises ship-based
chaplains operating along the
West Coast and outward to the
International Date Line. He also
recently received his D.Min. from
Fuller Seminary.
Dr. Kenneth and Susie (Newton)
(81) Roebuck sent a family
update. Ken is currently working
with the National Institutes of
Health, and Susie retired from
nursing. They live in Rockville,
Md. Daughter Rachel is married,
living in Vt. and attending
Marymount Graduate College;
daughter Ashley is attending the
Univ. of Md. College Park.
Amy Lind (85) was recently
named the 2008 Designer of the
Year by The Basket Connection
for outstanding contribution to the
gift basket industry. Amy owns
The Basket Corner, currently
serving the San Diego area, and
ships gift baskets nationwide
through her Web site.
Jennifer Harris (87) recently
accepted the position of chief
financial officer at a local
company. She continues to be
actively involved with the youth at
her church in Eureka, Calif.
Patrick and Lori (Pierce) (88)
Allen moved to Newberg, Ore., in
July 2008. Patrick is the provost
at George Fox Univ., and Lori is
office manager/administrative
assistant to the senior pastor at
Northside Community Church.
Bob and Karen (Kay) (88) Naber
were excited when a video of their
son, Austin (3), was posted on
Oprah’s Web site as part of her
search for the “World’s Smartest
and Most Talented Kids.” He was
pictured writing the entire alphabet
as a two year old. He is now
reading and writing words. They
are very proud of him!
Michelle (Franzen) (89) Murphy
has opened her second
elementary school in three years
and is an adjunct professor for
Azusa Pacific Univ. Her oldest
son, Mike, is currently serving in
the Navy; her oldest daughter,
Amanda, 18, just graduated from
high school; and her son, Justin,
16, and daughter, Holly, 14, are
still attending high school. Her
husband, Ron, earned his EA
license and has his own tax
service.
Chris Hearn (92) has written
a book with Dr. Shahab S.
Minassian entitled Pocket PCOS:
A Quick and Practical Guide
to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
with Personal Testimonies. It is
available through Amazon and
Barnes and Noble. He currently
lives in San Diego, Calif.
Heidi (Fitzpatrick) (94) Whitfield
is teaching part time at the First
Christian Elementary School in
Bulgaria and at another private
preschool. Her husband, Bruce, is
a professor at Sofia Univ.
John and Amanda (Lee) (95)
Huckstep recently moved from
Oahu to Colorado Springs.
Amanda is enjoying working
part time as a school physical
therapist with special needs
children from pre-K through 12th
grade. Their daughter, Jenna, is 7,
and son, Mason, is 4.
Paul Wisden (95) is the new
head volleyball coach at Cedar
Valley College.
Thane Erickson (99) has taken
a job as assistant professor of
psychology at Seattle Pacific Univ.
after completing a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Univ. of
Michigan. Thane and wife Amy
(Souza) (01) have three beautiful
children: Ethan, 4, Avery, 3, and
Hadley, 1.
Mike Ruybalid (00) is taking
on a new position at Valley
Christian Center in Dublin. He
will be coordinating the children’s
choir program and helping start
an “Academy of Arts,” which will
offer private and group instruction
to all ages in fine, visual, and
performing arts. He is also
beginning a master’s degree
program in music education
with a Kodály emphasis at Holy
Names Univ.
Donald LaPlante (M.A. 03) was
honored by the Downey Unified
School District for his 29 years of
service to the Board of Education
by the naming of the new science
building at his alma mater, Warren
High School, as “Donald E.
LaPlante Hall.” He has been
elected to the board by the
community eight times.
Lindsey Hutchinson (03) asks
for prayer while she serves as a
missionary and worship leader for
a year on the island of Cyprus in
the Mediterranean Sea.
Josh (05) and Megan
(McGlothlin) (06) Fitzpatrick
are living in Redlands, Calif. Josh
is finishing an M.Div. at Fuller
Theological Seminary. Megan is in
her third year of medical school at
Loma Linda Univ.
Joshua Romero (06) graduated
with an M.A. in communication
from Ohio State Univ. last June.
He recently relocated back to
San Diego and is working as a
PR manager with Alternative
Strategies.
Jacob A. James (07) received
an M.A. in government from
Georgetown Univ. in Aug. 2008.

San Diego.

Rhian Gastineau: From Zambia to Darfur

logistics so that the doctors and
nurses are able to do their jobs
efficiently.

Rhian Gastineau (96) grew up
as a missionary kid in Zambia
and Kenya, always thinking
she might want a job overseas.
She enjoyed living abroad and
wanted to help populations
that had suffered from violence,
neglect, and catastrophe. In
1996, after graduating from
PLNU with a degree in history
and political science, Rhian
moved to southern Sudan for
three years to do humanitarian
work, a passion she still has.
Rhian now works with Doctors
Without Borders, an international
medical humanitarian
organization dedicated to
providing aid to people whose
survival is threatened by armed
conflict, epidemics, malnutrition,
exclusion from health care, and
natural disasters. She works as
a project coordinator, taking
Rhian has worked in southern
Sudan, Mozambique, Nigeria,
the Democratic Republic of
the Congo, the Republic of the
Congo, and Haiti. On Feb. 7, she
headed to Darfur in northern
Sudan to work with mobile clinics
in displacement camps and
villages.
The work is very rewarding,
she said, because of the huge
impact the mobile clinics can
have. By treating upper and
lower respiratory illnesses and
malaria, the organization can
help prevent devastating effects
from treatable diseases. Rhian
enjoys seeing the positive effects
of the humanitarian work, and
her Christian faith has seen her
through some tough times.
“There are a lot of situations
with tension due to war… I
see people in very desperate
situations,” she said. “It’s nice to
know that whatever happens, I’m
still a child of God.”

slipped away on Saturday, Jan. 6,
2006, after a long illness. Elaine
was born in Montrose, Colo.,
on Jan. 1, 1928, and her family
moved to Pasadena in 1936. She
received her bachelor’s degree
in mathematics at Pasadena
College and earned a teaching
credential at UCLA and a
master’s in education from Cal
State University, Los Angeles.
She married Larry Channel in
1947. Elaine and Larry raised
five children. She taught math at
Marshall High School in Pasadena
and in Maryland high schools.
Later, she accepted a position
as professor of mathematics at
Montgomery College in Rockville,
Md. In 1990, Elaine and Larry
retired and moved to Nevada
City where she became an active
volunteer with local libraries. She
was an excellent writer and had
a keen analytical mind. Elaine is
survived by Larry and their
children, Robert, Susan, Cheryl
Matern, Timothy, and Janet Tajii,
and seven grandchildren.
Rev. Sylvia Kaye (Shannon)
Evans (66) passed away June 2,
2008. Sylvia discovered she had
cancer in Feb. 2001. She fought
a good and long fight. She served
as minister of music and drama
in the churches her husband,
Rev. Thomas Evans, pastored.
She also directed the community
choirs in Grand Island, Neb., and
Shattuck, Okla. She is survived
by her husband and four children:
Jeannette Kentch, Theresa Brown,
Ryan Evans, and Krystal Nuckols.
Karmen Kay (Stickney) Stuart
(85) passed away Oct. 30,
2008, after a 22-month battle
with pancreatic cancer. Karmen
was a member of the cross
country, basketball, and track
teams during her time at Point
Loma. She earned a master’s
degree in education and began a
teaching career in 1986. Karmen
married Scott Stuart on Dec. 20,
1991. Karmen’s family activities
included camping, swimming,
skiing, and bike riding. She also
continued running throughout
her life and completed the
Boston Marathon in April 2006.
Karmen loved the Lord with
all her heart, mind, soul, and
strength. She is survived by
Scott; their children, Payton,
Blaine, and Kendall; her mother,
Lu Stickney; brother Scott and
his wife, Rhonda; and brother
Tim and his wife, Annette.
Bruce D. Webb (55) ended his
service to God with a short, brave,
and peaceful fight with cancer.
He passed away on Oct. 21,
2008, with his family by his side.
Bruce met his wife Gina (Earley)
(pref. 56) Webb at Pasadena
College. He earned a bachelor’s
degree and a master’s in religious
education. Bruce excelled in track
and field and set records that
lasted many years. He was named
All-American and was inducted
into the Pasadena College Hall
of Fame. Bruce sang in a quartet
and played trombone. An ordained
Nazarene minister, Bruce, along
with Gina, served Nazarene
congregations in Los Angeles;
Nampa, Idaho; Seattle; Upland,
Calif.; and Sparks, Nev. In 1968,
Bruce became the director of
admissions at Northwest Nazarene
College and taught Christian
education. Bruce retired in 1996
and enjoyed traveling with Gina.
We will all miss Bruce, a true
example of a Christian life well
lived. He is survived by Gina; son
Mark and his wife, Debbie; son
Scott and his wife, Tammie; and
14 grandchildren.
Charles Henry Kaylor (50)
passed away in San Diego, Calif.,
on Dec. 14, 2008. Following his
service in the Army Air Force
during World War II, Chuck
enrolled in Pasadena College
and met his wife of 62 years,
Myrtle (Cady) (pref. 50) Kaylor.
Chuck worked for the campus
maintenance department,
was a member of Kappa Phi
Kappa, and lived with Myrtle in
“Trailerville,” a village of trailers
assigned to married veterans
returning from war. He spent his
career as an educator with the
Clovis Unified School District, first
as an 8th grade science teacher
and then as the director of the
outdoor education center. After
retiring, Chuck and Myrtle moved
to the San Luis Obispo area and
were very involved in the Nazarene
church community. They moved
to San Diego in 1996 to be near
their family. Chuck is remembered
as a devoted husband, loving
father, doting grandpa, and
tireless friend. He is survived by
Myrtle; his sister, Opal Kaylor
Burkhart; his daughters and their
husbands, Patricia (73) and
Glenn Leo Barroga and Cynthia
and Thomas Shelver; and four
grandchildren.

Tutt are preparing to “graduate”
in May along with their
daughter, Katie. Also in May,

Jim and Rhonda Seybert
will be graduating with their
students, Zackery and Noelle
respectively. We are grateful for

A Celebration of

early 50 years ago, Dr. Val Christensen arrived at Pasadena College. As chair
of the Science and Mathematics Division, Christensen played a pivotal role in
recruiting the outstanding faculty who would succeed in transforming PLNU
into one of the nation’s premier Christian institutions for science, mathematics, and
computer science education.
On Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, as part of PLNU’s Homecoming Weekend, hundreds of
alumni and former faculty will join with current PLNU faculty and students in
celebrating 50 years of mathematics and science at PLNU. Plan to take part in this
