Norwegian films on the move
Norwegian films enter 2012 in a very privileged position with a record
breaking 24,5% national market share in 2011, close to 40 new cinema releases and more than 2,8 million tickets sold. For the first time, the success
was also reflected in international sales. No wonder we have high expectations for the upcoming year!
Although there is a substantial reduction in new releases for 2012, the diversity in expressions and genre is great. The ambition of delivering documentaries on an international level has resulted in a particularly strong list
in this area. The year opens with an international documentary, Back to the
Square, about what happened after the Egyptian Revolution, directed by
Petr Lom. Kari Anne Moe’s Bravehearts, a documentary about what happened to four politically engaged youth after the terror of 22nd July in Oslo
and Utøya and Hans Petter Moland’s documentary When Bubbles Burst,
about the globalized economy and present financial crisis should also have
an international audience.
The last few years, Norwegian genre films have made their mark internationally with Dead Snow, Cold Prey and The Troll Hunter leading the
pack. This year the films go deeper into Norwegian mythology and history
with tales of witch burnings, the Black Death, the Devil himself and other
mythical creatures from the Norwegian wilderness. Expect the unexpected
in Dunderland, directed by Finn-Erik Rognan and Nils J. Nesse, Veil of Twilight, directed by Paul Magnus Lundø, Escape by Cold Prey director Roar
Uthaug and Thale, by Aleksander Nordaas.
The Max Manus’ directors Joachim Roenning and Espen Sandberg will open
the fall season with Kon-Tiki and the story about Thor Heyerdahl’s well
known expedition across the Pacific Ocean on the primitive Kon-Tiki raft.
After receiving critical acclaim for her films Kissed by Winter and Upperdog, Sara Johnsen also returns with a strong Nordic cast in the dramatic
All That Matters is Past. In 90 Minutes, Cold Lunch director, Eva Sørhaug,
reflects upon what happens the last minutes before a person commits murder. With their strong track record with short films, both Hisham Zaman and
Dag Johan Haugerud are directing there first full length features with 5152
Kilometers to Heaven and I Belong.
And finally, before Christmas, children can look forward to the spectacular
remake of the Norwegian classic The Journey to the Christmas Star, a fairytale directed by Nils Gaup.
And wishing upon that star, we can look forward to 2013, with exciting titles
like Victoria, Torun Lian’s film based on the world famous novel by Knut
Hamsun, two full length animated children’s films and much, much more.
Norwegian films are definitely on the move!

Norwegian nature also plays an important part in Petter Næss’ war drama
Into the White, where German and British soldiers have to survive in the
Norwegian mountains together in a small cottage. Family life can also be
troublesome, as we will see in Company Orheim, the third and darker part
of the story of Jarle Klepp, directed by Arild Andersen.

What happens in the last 90 minutes of a human life before they commit murder?
In 90 Minutes we follow Johan who is making a lavish last meal for his wife, Fred who is on
his weekly visit with the kids and Trond who completely has lost control of his use of violence
towards his young wife who just gave birth to a child.
Before the irretrievable act of murder happens, these men are still considered as human
beings. 90 Minutes don’t try to give any answers or to find psychological explanations, but
simply to follow these men’s perspective and stay with them and share the minutes just
before it’s too late.
Eva Sørhaug (1971) holds a Bachelor’s Degree in social sciences at the University of Oslo. She furthered her education

Into the White is inspired by a true story. High above the harsh Norwegian wilderness, English and German pilots shoot each other to the ground after a violent chance encounter.
Isolated, they must fight to survive the brutal winter. Though war has made them enemies,
antagonism is hard to maintain as days go by. Through mutual need, unlikely friendships
bloom. Somehow, they become comrades. War, after all, is absurd.
Petter Næss (1960) has worked as an actor, screenplay
writer and instructor within the film and theatre world. He
directed his first feature film in 1999, the humorous Absolute Hangover. His second film was Elling, which was seen by
800,000 people in Norway, and nominated for an Academy
Award for Best Foreign Feature. In 2005, he directed Love Me
Tomorrow, the last film about Elling. In between those two
films, he has also had the responsibility of directing these
films: the youth film Just Bea, the Hollywood debut Mozart
and the Whale, the Swedish children’s film Leaps and Bounds,

Half a century ago, the world was gripped with excitement as young Norwegian adventurer
Thor Heyerdahl embarked on a spectacular expedition - a journey of 4,300 nautical miles
across the Pacific Ocean on the primitive Kon-Tiki raft. The journey caught the public imagination and Thor and his crew reported home via radio transmitters as they drifted across the
biggest ocean on planet Earth. In a way, it was like the world’s first reality show: Would they
make it – or die trying…
Joachim Roenning (1972) directs in tandem with his childhood friend, and film school alumnus, Espen Sandberg
(1971). During their time at Stockholm Film School (1992
- 1994) they founded their production company Roenberg.
They made their debut as feature film directors with Bandidas in 2006 – a western comedy starring Penélope Cruz and
Salma Hayek, produced by Luc Besson and his EuropaCorp.
In 2008 Roenning and Sandberg got to show their directorial
skills with Max Manus. The movie turned out to be one of
the greatest success stories of all time in Norwegian cinema.

King´s only daughter, Goldenhair, went into the forest to find the Christmas Star. She disappeared in the dark forest and never returned. The King subsequently cursed the Christmas

Nine years have passed and this Christmas is the King´s last chance to find the Christmas Star.
Sonja manages to elude the thieves by escaping into the castle. She overhears the King´s sad
story just before she is discovered and captured. She begs for mercy as the evil Count tries

thanks for his help, Sonja sets out to find the Christmas Star so the King can get his beloved
daughter back.

Head Above Water were sold to the USA, and the film was
made with Harvey Keitel and Cameron Diaz in the leading

HOCUS POCUS, ALFIE ATKINS!
HOKUS POKUS, ALBERT ÅBERG!
At long last, one of the most important novels in Norwegian history
will be made into a film. Beatles relates the story of four Oslo boys
born in 1951 and hooked on The Beatles, from the time they as seventh
graders find themselves on the threshold of the adult world. The film is
all about boyish pranks, hopes, disappointments, and of course about
pretty girls, hopeless infatuations, drunkenness and parties. The world
is changing, and so is the friendship between the boys. But the conclusion is, true friendship endures all - and no band in the world is better
than The Beatles.
When he’s not playing at pirates with his friends, seven-year-old Alfie
Atkins dreams of having a dog of his own. A playful terrier. Just like
the one the old magician has. And since magic is all in the mind, Alfie
is convinced he can use it to make his dream come true. But it is not as
easy as he thinks... even if, in the end, his dream does come true, in the
most unexpected manner.

A LETTER TO THE KING
BREV TIL KONGEN
Jealousy is the story of a young woman and her longing to be loved
and fear of being rejected – the jealousy, uncertainty and cowardice we
usually prefer to keep to ourselves.
A Letter to the King portrays six very different characters’ meeting
with Norway outside the refugee camp. We follow their activities, joys
and tragedies during a day, as they travel together on a bus from a
snowy no man´s land to Oslo. On arrival, they are told to return to the
bus within a few hours, otherwise they will be reported to the police.
Their stories are bound together by a letter written by the 83-yearold Mirza, which he wants to deliver to the King personally. The letter takes us through the past, present and into the future of the six.
We soon find out that on this day, each and every one of them has a
special purpose with the trip and they will all be confronted by their
destiny.

MUST HAVE BEEN LOVE
EN SOM DEG
Mormor & de åtte ungene tells the story of Mona, who is slightly too
small to be big, and too big to be small. This is the classical underdog
story, in which both she and Grandma feel pushed into the background.
Mona feels she doesn’t quite fit in, and struggles to find her place in a
family which suddenly consists of a lot of people. She has to prove her
position, and she can do so by finding the lorry that has been stolen.
She goes hunting for the lorry together with Grandma, who suddenly
and unexpectedly appears for an inconvenient visit, simultaneously
carrying a secret. Together they set out for a trip into town, at first
slightly hesitant and anxious, then increasingly courageous, until they
finally find the lorry. All problems are solved, and Mona and Grandma
are heroes! Mormor og de 8 ungene is a story about getting back on
your feet after having been down-and-out, related in a charming way,
and with plenty of humour, excitement, song and dance.
A Finnish-Norwegian love story with an unexpected shape and development. Shot in Oslo, Helsinki, Istanbul and Berlin. The film focuses on
showing the actual moments that lead to getting to know one another,
building a relationship and to breaking up. The film takes part in Kaisa’s
attempt of getting involved with two different men that look almost
exactly the same, questioning where the thin line is between someone
potentially being the love of your life or not. Shooting the film with
the approach of a workshop and closely involving the actors allows
the film to take shape as a unique, unpredictable cinematic expression
touching the basis and complexity of human behaviour.

A documentary film about the close relationship between two brothers. Markus (13) and Lukas (10) live in an old, yellow townhouse in the middle of Oslo. The river runs close to their
home. A paradise in the heart of a big city. Big trees growing into the sky, and the water dark
and attractive beneath. Here the brothers grow up with their dreams and longings for the
future. Markus loves soccer, and wants to be a professional. He has played soccer since he
was five, and Liverpool is the only and best team. In the film we experience his struggle and
passion for achieving his goals. Lukas is the philosophic one, and likes to think all kinds of
thoughts. About the world, him self and what it all is about. “Mummy, what happens with my
dreams after I`m dead, will they still be alive?”
Aslaug Holm (1965) has directed about ten documentary

The Exorcist – A real life story takes the viewer into the unknown and sinister world of exorcism in the Catholic Church. We meet one of the few exorcists in Europe, the Vatican approved
José Antonio Fortea. He travels around the world on a mission to enlighten the masses about
demonic possession. Constanza, a Colombian woman, is desperately looking for Fr. Fortea’s
help. She claims to have been possessed by demons for nearly 15 years and she goes through
a ritual of exorcism before she sees the Spanish exorcist as a last hope for spiritual liberation.
The film follows both their journeys and gives a unique insight into one of the world’s most
secret and mystical rites – the catholic ritual of exorcism.

Enter the badlands of Bundelkhand and you have entered a place of desolation, dust and despair. And yet it is hope that this film discovers, captures and celebrates. Sampat Pal, founder
of the Gulabi Gang, has managed to inspire hope in the hearts of the very women who till
yesterday were powerless participants in their own oppression. Not just does the Gulabi
Gang take up women’s issues, it also fights other kinds of injustice like land-grabbing, and
lobbies for welfare schemes that corrupt officials have failed to implement. Yet between the
media-savvy Sampat and the rank and file cadre there is still a huge gap, and the struggle for
empowerment is bound to be a long one.

In Osterfjorden, north of Bergen, we meet the farmers Ole Hjelmås and Magnhild Dyrdal who
run their family farms in a traditional way. We follow them in their everyday activities – in
the contact with the animals, through calving and slaughter, and in the practice of old food
traditions. The People by the Fjord is a warm documentary about a west coast culture that
may disappear, a culture based on the interaction with the landscape that surrounds them:
the fjord.

When Bubbles Burst is the story behind the story: In a globalized economy it becomes increasingly difficult for nations, companies and individuals to protect themselves from today’s
extreme financial volatility. The economic “butterfly effect” makes us all equally vulnerable.
In this documentary we travel from Norway out into the world in order to examine the mechanics behind bubbles and crashes, and discuss trends and visions for the future. We meet
Nobel laureates, world-class economists, players in the global economic casino and “the little
man”. Together they give an unflinching account of today’s situation, draw fascinating historical parallels and provide insight needed to better understand the world’s present financial

Buzz Aldrin, What Ever Happened to You? is the story of Mattias, who, in contrast to apparently everyone in the coming generation, does not wish to stand out in the crowd. In spite of
his fantastic singing voice, he would prefer a secluded existence, and to remain as anonymous
as possible. But it’s not easy. His parents, girlfriend, friends and environment expect something more from him. Mattias finds solace in and derives inspiration for his lifestyle from the
astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who in 1969, incidentally on the day Mattias was born, was the second
human being to set foot on the moon. And was subsequently forgotten. It’s okay to be number
two, Mattias reflects.
Geir Henning Hopland (1970) is a writer, director and producer, with a background from the youth department at the
Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, where he’s made numerous short films, music videos and documentaries for over

Polarnight on the brink of the arctic ocean. A German family emigrates
to start anew, in the most Northern city in the world, Hammerfest.
Instead, a horrible accident questions everything. What role does guilt
play in regard to our happiness?
Europe 1990, the Berlin wall has just crumbled: Katrine, raised in East
Germany, but now living in Norway for the last 20 years, is a “war
child”; the result of a love relationship between a Norwegian woman
and a German occupation soldier during World War II. She enjoys a
happy family life with her mother, her husband, daughter and granddaughter. But when a lawyer asks her and her mother to witness in a
trial against the Norwegian state on behalf of the war children, she
resists. Gradually, a web of concealments and secrets is unveiled, until
Katrine is finally stripped of everything, and her loved ones are forced
to take a stand: What carries more weight, the life they have lived

FILM INSTITUTIONS
FILM INSTITUTIONS
About the Norwegian Film Institute
The Norwegian Film Institute (NFI) operates under the authority of the Norwegian Ministry of Culture and is the Norwegian government’s administrative body for the film sector and advisor on film policy issues. The Board
of the Film Institute is appointed by the Ministry. Film Institute CEO is Mrs
Nina Refseth.
The 2012 budget is NOK 529 million (approx. EUR 68,7 million), of which
NOK 423 million (approx. EUR 54,9 million) is earmarked for audiovisual
development, production and marketing. It also offers grants, training and
talent development for the film industry.
The NFI informs about Norwegian cinema nationally and abroad and represents and promotes Norwegian feature films, shorts, documentaries, games
and TV-series at festivals and film cultural events.
The NFI represents Norway at the Council of Europe’s fund for co-production of films, Eurimages, as well as at the European Audiovisual Observatory. The NFI also participates in a number of other international co-operative efforts for the audiovisual sector, including the International Council
for Educational Media, the European Film Academy, European Film Promotion, Filmkontakt Nord and Scandinavian Films. Together with the National
Library, the NFI is the Norwegian member of the International Federation
of Film Archives (FIAF).
Film professionals and international audiences can find more information
on Norwegian films through www.norwegianfilms.no and the Norwegian
Film database.
The institute is located in the Film House in Oslo, and is in charge of the
Film Museum and the Cinemateque of Oslo. Through www.nfi.no and exhibitions, the NFI is maintaining and providing knowledge and understanding
of the Norwegian film heritage.
The NFI is also responsible for facilitating and promoting Norway as an attractive shooting location for foreign producers.

FILM & KINO
Film & Kino is a combination of a member organisation for Norwegian
municipalities and an industry organisation for the cinema and video industries. The organisation, which was established in 1917, administers the
Norwegian Cinema and Film Foundation and also runs the Mobile Cinema
and S-Kino.
Around the world, cinemas are usually owned by private companies. In
Norway, however, most cinemas are owned by the municipalities. As a
member organisation for the municipalities, Film & Kino is looking after
their interests concerning film, the running of cinemas and video activities.
Membership is open to all municipalities. The organisation is governed by
a national convention with delegates from both the municipalities and the
cinema and video industries.
Helps ensure public access to new and relevant films
Film & Kino’s mission is to ensure the public of the entire country access
to new and relevant films, either through regular theatrical releases, at
festivals or through DVD. The organisation shall further both the big movie
theatre experience and a purposeful use of the DVD format, as well as being
a guarantor of quality and diversity.
Film & Kino administers a number of support initiatives for films. About 30
per cent of the films in regular theatrical release in Norway receive support
from these initiatives.
In 2011 all Norwegian movie theatres became digital. During the next few
years, the following up of the digitalising of Norwegian movie theatres will
be one of the most important tasks for the organisation.
76 FILM INSTITUTIONS
Film & Kino’s fields of operations are:
• Following up the digitalisation of Norwegian movie theatres
• Support the import and distribution of films
• Main executive responsibility for the government’s film culture and educational programmes for children and youth
• The official financing of Norwegian film festivals
• Developing the cinema and video industries
• Give advice and develop know-how
• Information and contact point for the public
Norwegian Cinema and Film Foundation
Film & Kino administers the Norwegian Cinema and Film Foundation, which
was established in 1970. Norwegian law instructs this foundation to charge
a certain percentage of cinema ticket sales as well as a levy on video sales
and rentals. Film & Kino’s activities for the cinema and video industries are
then financed by this foundation.
The Mobile Cinema
The Mobile Cinema is Film & Kino’s arrangement for the screening of films
in locations without a regular movie theatre. The Mobile Cinema brings all
necessary equipment and can screen films on all kinds of premises all over
the country.
In addition, Film & Kino offers programming assistance for small cinemas
without resources to maintain such a function. This arrangement is called
S-Kino.
FILM INSTITUTIONS
REGIONAL FILM FUNDS AND FILM CENTRES
By the end of 2011 all districts in Norway are covered by regional, public
resourse centres for film, apart from Oslo, the capital. These are ‘film centres’, ‘film funds’ and/or ‘film commissions’. They all have regional as well
as governmental support. The national goals are to stimulate strengthened
production infrastructure, professionality and continuity in all parts of the
production - and increased talent development in all corners of the country.
There are 8 film centres, 4 regional film funds and 3 regional film commissions, of whom some are co-located regionally. Furthermore FilmCamp
function as film fund, film commission and production centre serving productions from all over, also internationally. International Sami Film Centre
serves the Sami population all over Norway as well as those living in Sweden, Finland and Russia.
The Film Commissions are based on trade grounds, and offer facilitation
for foreign productions coming to their region. They are often involved
in investments in other productions and in building the regional film industry. The Film Commissions collaborate with Norwegian Film Institute
where Film Commission Norway (FCN) is an integral part of the Department
for Promotion and International Relations. FCN aims to encourage and aid
international film productions in Norway, and acts as a link between the
national and the international film and television industry.
The Film Centres are based on cultural grounds. Their main mission is to
support development and production of short films and documentaries, and
to raise competence among professionals and spot, cultivate and support
young talents.
The Film Funds can support audiovisual productions of all genres and formats, including international co-productions and video games. They are not
allowed (by the government) to contribute financially to the production
of feature films for cinema that are supported by Norwegian Film Institute. The allotment from the government is given on condition that the
region contributes with at least the same amount of money to the fund.
Furthermore the governmental support cannot be spent on managing the
organisation.
