Example: “Man swallows 200 diamonds…” (article) Example: “Tell her you’re a rotweiler…” (cartoon) • From teacher to students • From words to images First the image, then the word(s). Full-screen image with voice-over narration. Research from Richard E. Mayer (17 studies): by showing the image and then adding voiceover narration (using the eyes for the image and the ears for the words), recall is boosted 42% and transfer (applying the knowledge) increases 89%. • Definition of visual literacy: “reading” (interpreting, consuming) and “writing” (producing, purposefully creating) images.
