• Visual Literacy
• Shifting with Common Core
• Definition of literacy:
“reading” (interpreting, consuming) and
“writing” (producing, purposefully creating) text.
Example: “Man swallows 200 diamonds…” (article)
Example: “Tell her you’re a rotweiler…” (cartoon)
• From teacher to students
• From words to images
First the image, then the word(s).
Full-screen image with voice-over narration.
Research from Richard E. Mayer (17 studies):
by showing the image and then adding voiceover
narration (using the eyes for the image and the ears
for the words), recall is boosted 42% and transfer
(applying the knowledge) increases 89%.
• Definition of visual literacy:
“reading” (interpreting, consuming) and
“writing” (producing, purposefully creating) images.
Example: “Beauty Industry Secret” (video)
• The Progressive Story
Series of images juxtaposed in presentation program
Common Core Standard: Analyzing and inferring Example: Vioxx ad
Example: Where did Michelle go on vacation?
Example: Men on a pole, image reveal.
• Groups of two to six: each group gets a Koosh ball!
Person with the longest (or shortest, or curliest) hair

• 4-16 images (vary by age group and available time
in the classroom to _________ or _______________.
• How could you use this technique?
• Image resources
