INFORMATION ASSURANCE PROGRAM NAMED A NATIONAL CENTER
OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE BY THE NSA, DHS
The National Security Agency (NSA) and the
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have designated
the Information Assurance program in Louisiana Tech
University’s College of Business as a National Center of
Academic Excellence in Information Systems Security
Education.
This recognition places the program among the
academic elite in information assurance and as one of
only 106 schools in the country to have been designated
a National Center of Excellence in Information Systems
Security Education. Louisiana Tech is the only university
in the State of Louisiana to achieve this distinction.
The College’s information assurance programs
have been certified by the Committee on National Security
Systems Training Standards through the Information
Assurance Courseware Evaluation Program for several
national standards including Information Systems
Security Professionals (4011), Senior Systems Managers
(4012), and Risk Analysts (4016).
“This is a major accomplishment that recognizes
our ongoing efforts to develop one of the nation’s best
programs in information security,” said Tom Roberts,
Clifford R. King Professor of Computer Information
Systems and director of the College of Business’
Center for Information Assurance. “It could not have
been accomplished without a strong group of people
working diligently within the College of Business and our
sponsorship support from Argent Financial.”
Other noted universities with this designation
include Auburn, Arizona, Arizona State, the Naval Post

“This national recognition of our Computer
Information Systems program in Information Assurance
is another indicator that the programs in the College are
on the cutting edge of business education,” said James
Lumpkin, dean of Louisiana Tech’s College of Business.
“It is a delight to work with such innovative and dedicated
faculty.”
Louisiana Tech College of Business’ Information
Assurance program received this recognition as a result of
its ability to meet the education program criteria created
by the NSA and DHS to provide a future workforce that
contributes to the protection of the National Information
Infrastructure.
Program criteria includes outreach and
collaboration with two-year and minority colleges, a
multidisciplinary approach to information assurance, an
active agenda in information assurance research, and the
Louisiana Tech College of Business’ robust information
assurance education program. Those programs include the
College of Business’ Graduate Certificate in Information
Assurance, MBA with an Information Assurance
concentration, and information assurance efforts in the
Computer Information Systems undergraduate program.

BREAKFAST
MARKETING PROFESSOR TO CO-CHAIR WORLD MARKETING CONGRESS
The Department of Marketing
and Analysis at Louisiana
Tech University, together with
the Academy of Marketing
Science and its international
partner, Reims Management
School, is hosting the 15th
Biannual World Marketing
Congress. The Congress will
be held in Reims, France, from July 19 to July 23. The
500 participants will attend and take part in sessions
presenting cutting-edge marketing research. The
theme of the congress questions the old adage, “The
Customer is Always Right.” Many sessions focus on
how institutions and customers together co-create
value. Speakers represent 49 different countries. A
panel on business ethics highlights the Congress and
features two internationally known scholars, Professor
O.C. Ferrell of the University of New Mexico and
Professor Donald P. Robin (retired) who was formerly
a member of the marketing faculty at Louisiana Tech
University. They challenge the various ways different
companies and researchers have tried to change the
meaning of what it means to be ethical and reinforce
the theoretical meaning of what it means to be
ethical and how good ethics benefits all stakeholders
of the firm. The Congress is being co-chaired by
Barry J. Babin, chair of the department of marketing
and analysis and the Max P. Watson professor of
business, Louisiana Tech University, and Adilson
Borges, Reims Management School, Reims, France.

BETA ALPHA PSI
Members of Louisiana
Tech’s Beta Alpha Psi chapter
and their faculty advisor, Carol
Shaver, will attend the 2011
annual meeting in Denver,
Colorado, on August 11-13.
Beta Alpha Psi focuses on
developing the knowledge,
skills, and attitudes of our students. This year’s theme
is “The Bridge to Our Future.” The meeting includes
community service day, competitions, and opportunities
to network with professionals and other students.
The annual meeting will kick off with the
Community Service Event on Thursday, August 11. This
event will be a joint effort of Beta Alpha Psi, the City
of Denver, the Mile High United Way, and KPMG. The
purpose of the project is to provide essential social
and other services for the homeless or those at risk of
becoming homeless in the Denver area.
During the meeting, our students will attend
sessions presented by professionals. There are also
sessions designed to help other students run their
chapters more effectively and efficiently. Our students
will make a presentation on successful fundraisers at
one of the sessions.
COLLEGE OF BUSINESS CRAWFISH BOIL
Sixty students are selected each year to
participate in Project Run With It sponsored by Moss
Adams. One of our students, Caitlin McAlpin, completed
the requirements and was selected to participate in this
competition. The selected students will work in teams
during the annual meeting to develop solutions to real
life business problems of actual not-for-profit agencies.
Presentations by the teams will be delivered
to the judging panels at the conclusion of the meeting
on Friday. This competition provides students with an
opportunity to engage in a real-world consulting project.
The competing teams will “pitch” their proposal much
like a consulting firm would.
The winning team will be announced at
the awards presentation on Saturday. Each chapter
represented on the winning team will receive a plaque
and a $1,000 cash award. Our chapter should be
recognized as a Superior Chapter for the 9th consecutive
year at the awards presentation.
Beta Alpha Psi is an honorary organization for
financial information students. The annual meeting
always provides students with a wealth of educational
and professional opportunities.
