January/February 2013 SASTUN CENTER NEWSLETTER Quick Information Updates One good way to get a head start on looking better and feeling better is to enroll in our low level laser technology program to reduce inches while making the lifestyle changes necessary to keep those inches off! Three visits a week for 2 weeks using Zerona’s completely painless fat reduction laser is all you need! Our patients are seeing great results with this program. There is more to understanding cardiac risk than just your “cholesterol number.” A total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglyceride are important pieces of information to understand risk for heart attack and stroke, but there is so much more detail to know!! What is the size of the LDL and HDL particles? This can make a big difference in how damaging they may be to your arteries. What about Lipoprotein a? Or ApoB? Or genetic risk factors like 9p21 or KIF6? Sound like alphabet soup? Maybe so, but if you have a family history of heart disease or stroke, or you personally have an elevated cholesterol level, you may be interested in an “advanced lipid profile” now available at the Sastun Center. Berkeley Heart Lab has a test we are using to inform patients more fully about their risks and what they can do to minimize them. Now available from Snap Diagnostics is a HOME SLEEP STUDY TEST!! Many insurers are requesting and even requiring an in-home test for patients who snore, have witnessed breath holding spells or daytime fatigue because it is much less expensive than a study done in a hospital or free standing sleep lab. Discuss with your health professional at the Sastun Center whether you may be a candidate for a home sleep study. We have the equipment in the office that we can send home with you. Be sure to ask to borrow our “Pre-surgery CD” of soothing music and guided imagery if you are going to be undergoing an elective surgery. The unique music of Janalea Hoffman, local music therapist, has been made into an effective preparatory program to help ease the anxiety of surgery and decrease pain. Studies are showing that patients who have this kind of pre-operative preparation use less pain medication and go home sooner than those without it. Dr. Tammy Coder Mikinski, licensed psychologist at the Sastun Center, is happy to announce that she recently completed more advanced training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. So far, Dr. Mikinski has completed Levels I and II of this research-based approach to couples work. She is hoping to complete Level III during the next year. Gottman Method Couples Therapy involves assessment and intervention tailored uniquely to each couple and their needs. Using the Gottmans’ concept of the Sound Relationship House, Dr. Mikinski is working with couples to enhance multiple aspects of their relationship, including love maps (how well you really know your partner), building a culture of appreciation, emphasizing friendship and connection, and more Gottman based concepts. Dr. Mikinski is currently welcoming new couples to her practice, in addition, to her current general psychotherapy practice. For more information on Gottman Method Therapy or to take a look at their wonderful books and resources, go to www.gottman.com. “Healthy Candy” Recipe ½ cup liquefied coconut oil ¼ cup agave nectar (or to taste) Almonds (optional) 1 cup cocoa 1 teaspoon sea salt Mix together and pour into silicone candy molds (available at local craft stores). Freeze. These melt quickly, so keep frozen until ready to eat. *This recipe was shared at a Healthy For Life follow up group. See more information below. Please call the office to set up an appointment or to purchase your kit today! 2 January/February 2013 Healthy for Life Continues at Sastun Center Healthy for Life continues with our next starter session soon! Join us to start or continue a path to a healthier life. What: “Healthy for Life” (aka FLT) is a class that will bring people together in a socially supportive environment to help teach them how to eat healthy, transform their stress, and appropriately exercise. Whether it’s to lose weight, learn how to eat healthy, learn how to deal more effectively with stress, etc., this class will help each individual (as a group!) live their life to the fullest – optimal wellness! When: The next class will be offered Saturday, February 2, 2013 from 9 am to 12 pm. RSVP is required; call (913) 345-0060 to reserve your spot. How Much: $130/per person. This includes: the 3 hour class with Toni Forsyth MS, APRN, FNPBC, Celtina Reinert PharmD, and Dr. Murray, a comprehensive body analysis utilizing the Bioimpedance Analysis device (BIA) which measures fat mass vs. lean mass, intracellular/extracellular fluid, and phase angle (which is the nutritional status of the cell membrane). In addition to the 3 hour class and BIA, each person will get an individualized meal plan, and 1 years worth of support groups here at the center (which will be monthly on Monday evenings – dates below) as well as a morning snack (sample medical food), along with a menu sampling at the end of class (e.g., quinoa stuffed zucchini). How to Prepare for BIA (each person must do the following if planning on having the BIA done the day of the class): • • • • • • • Do not eat for 4 hours prior Do not exercise for 12 hours prior to testing Do not consume alcohol for 24 hours prior to testing Drink at least 1 quart of water one hour before your test Do not drink caffeine the day of your test Do not wear pantyhose Do not put lotion on your hands and feet Follow up group sessions: The next follow up session will be held Monday February 11 at 6 pm in the Sastun Center classroom. All previous Healthy For Life participants are encouraged to attend. 3 January/February 2013 Yoga for the Back COMING SOON! The class format will consist of poses that are based on the Viniyoga tradition. This yoga class is similar to the protocol that was used in the NIH study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, December 2005: Comparing Yoga, Exercise, and a Self-Care Book for Chronic Low Back Pain. The class is suitable for people who have chronic low back pain and are interested in learning an exercise technique to achieve the following goals: • • • • • • Reduce pain Increase circulation Improve daily function Increase self-confidence and well-being Improve structural stability Strengthen weak muscles and release chronic muscular tension The poses are not held for long periods of time. Rather they are repeated slowly and special attention is given to the breath and movement combined as one. The end result will be that clients will be able to learn a regular yoga practice that they can do safely on their own even after the class is concluded. The goal is to strengthen and tone weak muscles while supporting the body through use of the breath. Yoga is not so much about stretching as it is about opening up to, and being aware of, what our bodies are showing us on a daily basis. This class is perfect for someone who wants a slower paced class with sequences designed to encourage safe movement of the upper back and neck as well as the low back and hips. Proper breath work will be taught to enhance strength and balance of the body/mind. Therapeutic Yoga - Level I Starts Tuesday January 15, 2013 7 week series Time: 10:30am-11:45am Cost: $84.00 Noon Yoga Come join us for this yoga class appropriately placed in the day to provide a "yogic break" to those who want to refresh and renew over the lunch hour. No previous yoga experience is necessary. This class provides stretching and the variability of a slow flow class while working with the basic postures. Includes breathing linked with movement and a nice relaxation at the end. This class is guaranteed to be a mindful transition to the second part of your day.
