We are looking for volunteers to assist in the management of the Robyn Chaplin Tournament. Areas of interest include technical set up and planning, competition execution including weapons checks, and public relations. Thankyou to Adelaide Swords Club for offering to run the canteen again at this years event. This is Adelaides’s one national competition that needs the support of the SA fencing community. Please email secretary@fencingsa.org if you would like to participate in the running of any of this great event. All volunteers, committee members and coaches working within the clubs or schools are required to have a DCSI screen, which lasts for 3 years, or an annual Police check. Unpaid volunteers can have a free police check, but a DCSI screening will cost $56.10. Apologies for the delay in establishing this arrangement. For either type of screening/check, please contact secretary@fencincsa.org.au WOMEN’S DAY A great group of young and not so young women fencers got together in early April to explore fencing as a sport. Mums and sisters had a great time with a “try”session, which saw them donning the whites and handling a foil for (mostly) the first time. Thankyou to Ursula Menz for donating her time to run this class. Seasoned fencers had a fast and furious personal training session with Siti Wilson, and we all enjoyed a great keynote speech from Andrea Chaplin, past South Australian Olympic fencer. Andrea gave us a good insight into the training and evolution of an Olympic fencer, with a detailed history of her experiences and some great anecdotes. It stimulated some valuable discussion about women in sport, and competing at the highest level. The afternoon saw all participants don sabre masks and try fencing with a sabre, most of us for the first time. A few bruises and lots of laughs resulted: thanks to Frances Williams for volunteering to run this great session. The last session of the day was a great round of competitions, handicapped against the more experienced fencers. Epee was the weapon of choice, which made it easy for everyone to have a go at refereeing. Plans are afoot to run a similar day next year, so we’ll keep you posted. SCHOOLS LEAGUE COMPETITIONS Schools League 2016 is in its planning stages. Letizia Gentile will be managing the league this year as Ursula Menz is overseas. Team divisions will remain the same this year (junior boys, senior boys and girls) so start thinking about what your teams will look like and who you will line up as team managers. All fencers will need to be registered with Fencing SA, and there is a special "school league only" level of registration which is still $30.00 (plus online payment fees) But if fencers wish to enter individual State competitions, they will need to register or licence as appropriate. https://memberdesq.imgstg.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=main&OrgID=20376 JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT CAMP A very successful Junior Development Camp ran in mid April, attended by 5 beginner fencers and 9 Intermediate/Advanced fencers. Each day included stretching, strength, fitness and skills training. Some great fencing was seen on a challenging piste in the form of a balance beam a metre above the ground! Thanks to Sue, Maria and Kerri who assisted with feeding the hungry hoardes. AFF/FIE RULE CHANGES The AFF has provided the following information on Australian application of recent FIE rule changes: FIE rule t.17 (change to sabre en guard position) - this rule will not be applied locally until the TMC reviews the FIE decision in this area after the end of December 2016. FIE rule t.18.5 (card offence for reversing the line of the shoulders in foil) - to be applied from 1 January 2017. FIE rule t.33.1 (reduction of injury time to 5 minutes) - this rule will not be applied locally until the TMC reviews the FIE decision in this area after April 2016. Some other matters are of relevance: The AFF’s Weapons Control Policy has been updated, noting that the key changes relating to the FIE rule change (m.27.3/m.32.4) for foil and sabre mask wires will not commence until 2017. From AFC3 in 2016, the change in sabre timing (from 120ms to 170ms) as outlined in the FIE rule changes in the Material Rules Annex B will apply. States hosting AFC events will be required to notify the DT at the event as to which scoring boxes contain the computer chip allowing the new timing. AFC3 was selected as the chosen start event so that our local athletes will be accustomed to the new timing prior to commencing the FIE season in October 2016. It is also strongly recommended that States convert all of their scoring boxes to the new timing as soon as possible for the same reason(s), and in turn make similar recommendations to their affiliated clubs. It is also recommended that all hosting States for 2016 have available for the semi-final and final bouts scoring apparatus which conforms to FIE Material Rules m.51.8(a), allowing display of time remaining to tenths of seconds during the last ten seconds of a bout. The double-substitution rule in Team events (o.44.10(a)) is now active. PLEASE CHECK THE AFF WEBSITE FOR CLARIFICATION ADDENDUM: The initial version of this newletter, published 3rd April, omitted to list Shayne Pay’s 10th place in the Veteran Mixed Sabre, Georgina Barratt’s 6th place in the Open Womens Foil, Maria Kirby’s 33rd place in the Open Foil and her 6th position in the Women’s Veteran Foil, all events during the recent AFC1 competitions in Melbourne. A draft of the newsletter was accidentally uploaded, which also managed to chop the heads off some of our Women’s Day participants in a photograph! Apologies to all...
