The Morning Line - The Plantation at Ponte Vedra
The Morning Line

Current Condition & Outlook Through October 1 Closure
While generally good, it goes without saying that the golf course has not
been at its best recently. Following heavy rains last September poor
drainage led to disease and algae formation in the fairways. The recovery
took months and there are still remnants of the damage apparent.
Additionally, greens have become progressively more difficult to manage
year after year due to their age and corresponding organic buildup. Though
we have had a very mild spring with an early warm up in March greens
have been slow to recover from thinning following winter and dormancy.
Because of this, we continue to manage weak areas in many of the greens.
We have not been able to mow greens as low or roll greens as aggressively
as in past years since this would only exacerbate the issue. The result has
been slower green speeds than previous years. To compound our issues, on
the morning of Wednesday, May 13, a hydraulic line on a piece of
equipment failed resulting in the front half of #9 green being striped with
oil. This will take approximately four weeks to recover from. I was not and
am not proud of the product that we have given you to date this year.
However, the conditions we are experiencing are more a result of the golf
course exceeding its productive life than any other factor. It will be a grand
day for me when the first bull dozer arrives on property.
Going forward we will continue to strive to give the membership the best
conditions possible prior to renovation. This year we are not closing the
course for maintenance in June, July, and August as normal practice.
During these periods we typically perform various tasks such as aerification
and vertical mowing which are critical to the health of the turf. Considering
the renovation, it was decided that we would forgo these practices this year
so that the membership would have more access to the course this summer
prior to the October 1 closing. The tradeoff is that the recovery of the greens
will continue to be inhibited and the golf course will be generally less
healthy than in prior years. Additionally, prior to the renovation it is critical
that the existing turf be eradicated so that contamination of the new variety
(Celebration) does not occur. The eradication of all grass on the course will
begin in mid August and require 3 applications to fully kill the existing turf.
The eradication must be performed during the hotter months when the turf
is vigorously growing, hence the August date. Following the first application
the turf will begin turning brown and by mid September be completely
dead. The course will continue to be open for play through this eradication
period. Dependent on the amount of rain we receive during this process the
course should remain very playable, though not green.
We appreciate the membership’s support and patience through the short
term pains that will ultimately end with a new and improved golf course
that will be conditioned at a level which will far exceed your expectations.

of those families. You can purchase the book at the Beaches Museum which is located
