Introduction The Xtraction process facilitates a revolutionary change to The process ensures the end of life policy for synthetic playing surfaces. It allows reduced carbon emissions the upgrade of old hard sports surfaces with reclaimed turf through lower material processing and leads to a reduction in costs of new installations through credits for the re-use or re-sale of reclaimed infill and turf. Further benefits include positive corporate publicity linked to the donation of reclaimed materials for community use and certification for recycling. and transportation costs. It also aids the avoidance of environmental and social costs linked to the current practices of land filling and field tipping. Xtraction is a member of Carpet Recycling UK. As such we can assist your company's environmental positioning to meet sustainability standards. Xtraction is a one stop shop for all your refurbishment needs. Benefits To The Environment The true value of the Xtraction process is that it reduces environmental costs 1 Zero waste going to landfill. 2 Zero environmental and social costs linked to field tipping. 3 Reduced CO2 emissions. 4 Second life for reclaimed carpet and infills. 5 Logistical and transport costs reduced. 6 Processing of carpet and infills evidenced on site. 7 Official certification linked to recycling. Releasing value from synthetic surfaces through Reclamation Relocation Recycling Refurbishment Newcastle Royal Grammar School Project - November 2012 Fl oo d da m ag ed We evaluated the old playing surface at Newcastle Royal Grammar School and implemented the UK’s first zero waste specification for its relocation. The existing 8 year old sand filled carpet had been badly flood damaged and was suffering extensive seam and inlaid line failure. pi tc h CASE STUDY 1 The reclamation process was undertaken by Xtraction over 5 days, and the following values were released from the old 5,000 m2 sand filled carpet. 1 Over 110 tons of sports silica infill (river 2 infill, was identified as fit for reuse and washed sand) was bagged and then relocation (see Rocks Lane case study). stored on site. The recovered silica infill was found to be of a grade suitable for reuse. However, the silt content caused by the flood damage raised concerns and this infill was then sold to a local golf club for sand bunkers and top dressing. 8 Over 2,500 m2 of the original carpet, free of 3 CA SE ST UD Y Xt ra ct io n pr oc es s Remaining damaged and heavily worn carpet, free of infill, was identified as being fit for recycling. The recycling process is based on extrusion and this can only be undertaken when carpet is free from infill. Releasing value from synthetic surfaces through Reclamation Relocation Recycling Refurbishment Ne w in sta lla tio n Relocation Site – Rocks Lane Community Sports Centre CASE STUDY 2 The above community sports facility had a 2,500 m2 hard standing tarmac area that was dormant and under used. This was identified as a suitable relocation site for the reclaimed grass from Newcastle Royal Grammar School. The facility requirements were that the reclaimed carpet be installed as a MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) sports pitch with specific inlaid line markings. The logistical costs of moving the reclaimed product were negligible as the carpet was free of infill. The installation costs were standard, as the rolls were precision cut and professionally rolled - this enabled installation works to be completed within one week. Testimonial CA SE ST UD Y “When we told our junior football players that the new 7 a side area was ready to train on, they were uncontainable with excitement. This was all made possible by the process and professional installation. We now have a surface which is used for football training by schools, five a side club competitions and local FA matches. The feedback on playability has been very positive from players, teachers and coaches. We would whole-heartedly recommend this product and look forward to our next project using recycled products.” Chris Warren, Managing Director of Rocks Lane Multi Sports Centre. 10 Releasing value from synthetic surfaces through Reclamation Relocation Recycling Refurbishment Everest Community Academy, Basingstoke CASE STUDY 2 The existing full size sand based MUGA surface was installed in 2007 and was in good condition, however the Academy’s primary focus had shifted towards football. It was decided to change the surface to a 3G turf, more suited towards football and touch rugby. The standard approach would have been to rip up the existing MUGA surface and dispose of it at a local landfill site / field tip. Xtraction - a process recognised and supported by Hampshire County Council. The Benefits: 12 1 Ensured project was delivered on time and on budget despite inclement weather. 2 Reduced carbon footprint linked to deliveries. 3 Prevented 200 tonnes of infill going to landfill / field tip. 4 Savings made on the reuse of existing infills enabled the client 5 Secured sale and relocation of the original sand based carpet. to install a higher specification 3G surface.
