We can lead people to the lifestyle changes that will bring them into remission. That doesn’t mean the addiction just goes away -- but it does mean there is recovery.” People with substance addictions are parents, coworkers, neighbors and friends. The Addiction Treatment Services program at Family Guidance is the only local program offering inpatient and outpatient treatment along side a medical detoxification treatment program. Learning positive ways to manage the triggers that contribute to substance abuse for a lifetime is part of the overall wellness approach offered at Family Guidance. Responding to consumer surveys, Family Guidance now offers counseling and therapies in the morning, afternoon or evening, divided into distinct recovery categories. “Nothing is more satisfying than to be out in the community and to see someone you haven’t seen in 5 years and find them healthy. They’re healthy and their children are healthy.” – Addiction Treatment Services Staff “If people could ‘just say no,’ they would.” “Decide you want it and make today the day.”–Susan, former Addiction Treatment Services consumer* Now maintaining almost 20 years of sobriety, Susan remembers when Family Guidance services helped save her life, her home and her family. Through the help of Family Guidance’s psychiatric services, including case management, Susan began a journey of sobriety in 1992 – ending an alcohol addiction that began when she was only 10 years old. Susan graduated with her bachelor’s degree and completed an internship all under the Family Guidance umbrella of support. Today, as a State of Missouri employee, she often shares her story of recovery with clients. In September 2011, Susan was invited to serve as a guest workshop coordinator at an AA meeting in California. “I’m so grateful people didn’t give up on me. If you’re willing, Family Guidance has the support you need to reach recovery. Decide you want it and make today the day.” *consumer name changed Family Planning “Positive reproductive health is critical to overall health. Without our services, many women would never begin treatment for life-threatening disease or cancers.” 10 minutes to save a life: Last year 193 calls were logged on the Crisis Intervention 24hour phone line. Counselors provide immediate response and refer people in crisis to the appropriate services. For face-toface interventions, Family Guidance arrives within the hour. Miles Driven to Deliver Service: 471,000 “We deliver community integrated case management. We go into homes, food kitchens, other agencies and even alleyways to help consumers – far beyond office walls.” WWW.FAMILYGUIDANCE.ORG 2,619 Served The Family Planning Clinic has a long history of quality reproductive care for women and men. In recent months, the clinic has become poised to grow as a leader in women’s reproductive services – growth spurred by a professional staff and expanded hours. Services include annual exams, pregnancy testing and STD screenings as the team delivers life-saving results and education to consumers across age groups and demographics. Team members are skilled at referring consumers to their next steps for care and are diligent about follow-up. For many consumers, the Family Planning Clinic is the only skilled health care visit they may receive each year. For many others, it’s their choice for professional, flexible women’s health care that’s part of overall wellness. “Mental illness will affect 20% of Americans in their lifetime, and includes common illnesses like depression or anxiety disorders.” Dr. Patricia Hogan Family Guidance psychiatrist “It’s our team-based, multi-faceted approach to support services for people with mental illness that makes Family Guidance unique in this region. Without ongoing support, those with mental illness may run the risk of sliding out of services, being unable to keep appointments or stop taking needed medication. We bring together our consumers’ natural supporters – such as family members and significant others – together with a variety of professionals to help people find success in the community.” Children Children and Served: 979 Youth Services Schools Served: “We can do nearly everything 50 in 9 Counties at Family Guidance to help a child with mental illness that a residential facility can do. Plus we have the added advantage of engaging families who’ve been through a similar experience. They want to help other families reach success.” Children served may be living with mental illness like ADHD, bi-polar disorder, depression, or mood regulation disorders. No other area center for behavioral health care offers the resources of Family Guidance. Children in preschool or kindergarten can access a day treatment program, and youth can participate in an after-school program. The unique respite care element at Family Guidance means a licensed family can provide residential support for a week at a time, allowing the child’s family to ease emotional stress. The center has recently established three Family Support Partner positions, who work alongside the team and have personal experience in working through childhood mental illness. “They bridge the gap, because they’ve been there before. It’s a truly life-changing program,” says Rachel GaunttWeaver, director of Children and Youth Services. Through a unique wrap-around, intensive team approach, Family Guidance is helping children with mental illness build the skills they need to remain in their homes, succeed in school and enter into a vibrant future – one day at a time. Adult Mental Health Services 1,435 Individuals Served “We’re focused on teaching people to learn to live successfully with mental illness. Just because a consumer has a diagnosis, that doesn’t have to define what their life is.” Adult Mental Health Services offers treatment for mental illnesses like depression, anxiety disorders, post traumatic stress disorder or bipolar disorder. Following national trends, psychiatric services, pharmacy services, primary care, counseling and case management can all be offered in one-stop – from a team who truly knows each individual consumer. Family Guidance is one of the few centers in the state to offer the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) model of treatment, which involves a team of professionals focused on the success of one consumer, simultaneously, all geared toward helping consumers remain in their homes – a program that is dramatically curbing hospitalization expenses and homelessness rates.
