ABTA have been shouting about UK
holidaymakers being scammed out
of £2.2m in 2014, predominantly by
fraudulent activities online. That’s
why more and more people are

high losses for
pilgrims.
Holiday Clubs:
Victims were offered
“free” holidays to entice them
into attending a seminar where they
were duped into buying a fraudulent
timeshare.

Ilfracombe Museum
On the 8th of May 2015 it will be 70 years since
the end of the Second World War in Europe. At
the Museum, from the 1st May we will be having
an exhibition of photos and stories about how
this momentous occasion was celebrated in
Ilfracombe. To whet your appetite, here are two
photos taken in the town on the 8th May 1945.
They both show townsfolk - young and old - and
members of the armed services joining together
in impromptu street gatherings, such was the
relief and joy upon hearing that the war with
Germany was finally at an end.
The Ilfracombe Chronicle of May 11th 1945 gives
us plenty of detail about how Ilfracombe received the news. The surrender of Germany had been widely
anticipated since the suicide of Hitler on 30th April during the Battle of Berlin. During the month of April,
some prisoners of war had
arrived home to their Ilfracombe families without any warning, having been freed by the Allies’ rapid push
across Europe and into German territory. In the streets of ‘Combe, residents were heard saying ‘soon be
over’, and there was an air of tense expectancy by the beginning of May.
Once the news of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender to the Allies on the 7th May had been received,
most people in Ilfracombe waited eagerly for 3pm on the 8th of May, to hear Winston Churchill’s official
broadcast to the nation. In it he said:
‘’Hostilities will end officially at one minute after midnight to-night (Tuesday, May 8), but in the interests of
saving lives the "Cease fire" began yesterday to be sounded all along the front, and our dear Channel
Islands are also to be freed to-day.’’
Two days of public holiday were announced on the 8th and 9th of May, and across Britain, and also in
France, huge crowds gathered to celebrate. In London, many thousands took to the streets, and thronged
Trafalgar Square and The Mall. King George and Queen Elizabeth appeared to the public no less than eight
times, and the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret slipped into the crowds largely unrecognised, to
experience the celebrations first-hand.
In Ilfracombe, people took to the streets after hearing Mr. Churchill, and houses and roads were decorated
with flags and bunting. Even the boats in the harbour found flags to decorate themselves with. Cafes sold
puddings named after Stalin, Eisenhower and Montgomery.
Street teas and parties for the children were organised in each neighbourhood over the next few days.
There were gigantic Victory cakes to eat, donkey rides, ice creams and games. And the grown-ups ate
whatever food the children couldn’t manage. The children’s parties in Whittingham Road and
Chambercombe both culminated in the burning of Hitler and Mussolini’s effigies.
At the end of the week, on Sunday the 13th, and official victory parade and service of thanksgiving took
place. Thousands of people joined in – contingents from
all the services stationed in Ilfracombe were
represented, such as the Marines, the Pay Corps and the
Wrens. They marched to the bandstand that once stood
at Wildersmouth, where the salute was taken by
Colonel Ingpen. There were many mixed emotions
expressed at the end of the war – relief, joy, reflection.
But perhaps the simplest was made by one little
Ilfracombe boy after a long but happy afternoon at a
victory street party: ‘’It is a pity there must be wars in
order to have victory teas’’. Oh, to have a child’s
perspective of the world!

ILFRACOMBE and District 1851
Births:
June 5th, at the Vicarage, Ilfracombe, the lady of the Rev. J.M. Chanter, the vicar, of a daughter.
19th June 1851:
Public Health Act:--It is come. The “Order in Council” for the application of the Public Health Act to the
town and parish of Ilfracombe was received on Friday last by the resident magistrate, Nathaniel Vye, Esq.
The officially printed notices to the public for commencing action under its provisions have just been posted.
The powers that be speak forth in it after this fashion—“I Nathaniel Vye, Esq., being the person
appointed by law to conduct and complete the first election by owners of property and ratepayers of the
members of the Ilfracombe Local Board of Health, do hereby give notice.” It then proceeds to give
“Notice.”—First. “That the number of persons to be elected as members of the said Local Board of Health
for the district of Ilfracombe is nine.....That the following are the persons by whom, and the places within the
said District where, nominations papers of members of the said Local Board of Health are to be received,
viz., Mr. John Toms, shoemaker, Mr. William Turner, ironmonger, at their respective dwelling house in
Ilfracombe. That any person entitled to vote may nominate for the office of member of the said Local Board
of Health, himself (if qualified to be elected). Every rate payer eligible to vote “must have been rated one
whole year immediately preceding the day of tendering his vote,” and “must have paid all rates made upon
him for the relief of the poor.” Thus has commenced amongst us the action of a power—a power for good or
evil, just as the parishioners choose to make it.
26th June 1851:
“Never say die while there’s a Shot in the Locker.”—The principal street in the town which lies on the route
to the church was in no little commotion on Thursday last—all parties, particularly the softer sex, on tiptoe
for the occurrence of some interesting event. The curious—and there are some such—who are in the habit of
scanning the house as well as the persons of men from top to toe—may have noticed on the right hand side
going down High-street a house conspicuously elegant above its neighbours height Victoria Terrace in letters
of gold above the door; if such have cast their eye to the uppermost height of the front, they will have seen
on one corner the image of a sailor perched up there, with a spy-glass in his hand, reconnoitring an object at
the farther end. There he will see another sailor standing behind a cask, evidently the object of the other’s
gaze. If the curious body does not know what that means, he may be told that the house belongs to an ancient
veteran in the coastguard service, who enjoys a pension for his services, and has besides contrived to gather
together good store, if report says true, of this world’s wealth. Well, under an aged form, of Dutchman...
resides an elegant and voluptuous taste, and all within the dwelling is beautiful to behold. It was our retired
sad officer’s sad lot, a decent while ago, to lose his second wife, which unendurable blank in his domestic
state was on the morning in question to be more than filled by a far younger, stronger, and more blooming
bride. Circumstances scarcely to be explained give publicity to certain characters; and in this case the
advanced age of the bridegroom—but what of that! “Even in our ashes live our wonted fires.” His resolution
was driven to Church in a coach drawn by four greys—altogether excited the public attention, so that a large
concourse gathered around Victoria Terrace to witness the departure of the happy pair. They did witness it,
and gave sundry hearty cheers as the brave old man and his blooming bride, on whose neck, it is said, he had
suspended a superb gold watch...£20, with a massive ring glittering on his own finger, were taken off by the
four greys, the two postillions with red jackets, and the coachman of the box. At the church a similar crowd
greeted their presence, and a company of juveniles gathered arms full of the flourishing grass and sweet wild
flowers, and plentifully strewed their path as they retired from the holy fane. What did these youth mean to
mock, or teach? The latter it will do. Let it. The fading grass! The withered flower! Man at his best estate is
that. What, then, when more than three score years and ten have paralysed his bones?
3rd July 1851:
The Welsh:--On Monday we were again visited by some two or three hundred of the children of Gomer, who
came here in two steamers from Neath and Swansea. Music and mirth they brought with them. Donkeys and
strawberries they were supplied with on this side. The latter article we grudge them not to any extent; but for
the poor donkeys we do feel—as Christians ought—a good measure of pity. What with the heat, the beating,
and incessant trot, to poor donkey it must have been a purgatorial season. One of them, either to please his
rider or himself, commenced mounting a flight of steps on the south side of the street, when the saddle and
sinner upon it all slid back over donkey’s tail together, and left him for the moment free from the oppressor’s
load. But it availed him nought: saddle was strapped on again, man mounted again, and his gain by his caper
was additional cudgelling. After enjoying themselves, as they appear to do most heartily, they returned about
five o’clock, having had a most beautiful day.

Events 4 Ilfracombe
This month we are starting to gear up for the events season and will be dusting off and cleaning up our events
equipment and starting to sell tickets for ‘paid for’ events. The paperwork is almost done and the fun bit of planning
what we are going to do at each event is about to start. If anyone would like to get involved in any of the Ilfracombe
events as an organiser or marshal then do make contact (see below).
As part of the Victorian Celebration in June tickets for The Grand Ball at The Landmark on Friday 12 June (£14.00)
and The Cowboy Supper at the Cowboy Encampment on Monday 15 (£5.00) are now available from Ilfracombe
Tourist Information Centre (TIC). We are also pleased to announce an addition to the usual Victorian celebrations
this year. On Monday 8 June it is the 800 anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta and we will be celebrating
this momentous occasion in our very own Runnymede Gardens. All are welcome, please meet at 4.00pm by The
Clapping Circle for music and entertainment, then a short procession to the gardens lead by the Town Crier for a
proclamation and unveiling of a plaque. More information on this and the programme of events for the whole
celebration can be found in the programme which will be available at the TIC and around the town for several weeks
beforehand.
On Saturday 27 June there is a new event – Dead Famous in Ilfracombe, Bringing History Alive at Holy Trinity
Church. Tickets (£10.00, adults only) will be available from Ilfracombe Museum and Ilfracombe TIC from 1 May
onwards. Also available from the TIC and Museum are tickets for a talk on William Morris on Friday 11 July at
Ilfracombe Museum. The talk, ‘William Morris, Not Just That Wallpaper Guy’ (£8.50) will be given by expert
Antigone Neaum. Numbers are strictly limited for both events and the price in both cases includes cheese and wine.
Lastly tickets for Rescue Day on Sunday, 16 August are now available from Ilfracombe TIC. Reduced price tickets
for anyone with an EX34 postcode can be obtained IN ADVANCE by using the voucher below. Note that the reduced price tickets will only be available up to Friday, 14 August and WILL NOT BE AVAILIBLE ON THE GATE. If
you don’t buy your ticket in advance then you will have to pay full price. There is also a special ‘Small Family’ ticket
available as well. Ilfracombe TIC are also selling tickets for the Devon County Show and The North Devon Show.
We would like to remind everyone that the May Day/Jack in the Green celebrations which are usually on the May
Day bank holiday have been cancelled this year. The event will return bigger and better in 2016. Please get in touch
with us if you would like to help with this event next year. On 20 May The Forces March will leave from Ilfracombe
Seafront at 10.00am. These guys will spend the next 5 days walking to Bulford in Wiltshire, 135 miles away all to
raise money for The Veterans Charity (www.veteranscharity.org.uk) and some of them run all the way. They will
appreciate a good send off.
Also in May we are looking forward to a brand new arts event, Ilfracombe Art Trail, held over the weekend of 9 &
10 May - a weekend of art, music, poetry, dance and workshops by local artists. www.artilfracombe.co.uk Artists will
open their homes and studios and there will be exhibitions at public places such as galleries and restaurants across
the town. The 10 May also sees the Scrumpy Run, a vintage motor cycle rally which leaves the Seafront at 11.00am,
returning at around 1.00pm when the bikes will displayed for the public to see.
Classes for the Ilfracombe in Bloom Craft and Flower Show have now been announced and include all sorts of crafts,
vegetables, flowers and photography. Entry forms and class information are available from Webbers Estate Agents or

Fuchsia Valley Quilters' Exhibition June 2015.
The Fuchsia Valley Quilters are a vibrant group who meet regularly in Lee Memorial Hall; set within the
inspirational, timeless combe on the North Devon coast.
On the weekend of 13th and 14th June, 11am-4pm, they will be holding a truly stunning exhibition of their
works with funds raised being donated to the North Devon Hospice.
An eclectic mix of patchwork quilts of all sizes, styles and designs: traditional, funky, artistic and fun. The
exhibition will showcase the many techniques of patchwork and quilting and is of an extremely high
standard. In addition the many applications of these techniques can be seen in cushions, bags, Christmas
themed quilting and gifts, many of which will be for sale.
The exhibition is also privileged to be one of the hosts to the Barnstaple Group of the West Country
Embroiderers' Heirloom Quilt. This is being raffled to also raise funds for the Hospice. "Fifty six hand
embroidered blocks of twenty eight different designs created by forty five people". This alone is worth the
visit. Of course tempting homemade Devon cream teas and cakes will be available to make it the perfect
day out in tranquil, Fuchsia Valley. There is plenty of parking and disabled access.

Ilfracombe.
Fuchsia Valley Quilters’ Exhibition June 2015.
The Fuchsia Valley Quilters are a vibrant group who meet
regularly in Lee Memorial Hall; set within the inspirational,
timeless combe on the North Devon coast.
On the weekend of 13th and 14th June, 11-4pm, they will be
holding a truly stunning exhibition of their works with funds
raised being donated to the North Devon Hospice.
An eclectic mix of patchwork quilts of all sizes, styles and
designs: traditional, funky, artistic and fun. The exhibition will
showcase the many techniques of patchwork and quilting and
is of an extremely high standard. In addition the many
applications of these techniques can be seen in cushions, bags,
Christmas themed quilting and gifts, many of which will be for
sale.
The exhibition is also privileged to be one of the hosts to the
Barnstaple Group of the West Country Embroiderers’
Heirloom Quilt. This is being raffled to also raise funds for the
Hospice. “Fifty six hand embroidered blocks of twenty eight
different designs created by forty five people”. This alone is
worth the visit.
Of course tempting home made Devon cream teas and cakes
will be available to make it the perfect day out in tranquil,
Fuchsia Valley. There is plenty of parking and disabled access.

CAPSTONE LADIES’ CLUB
The Annual General Meeting of the Club was held on the 23rd
March starting with Cecily, our President reading the Standing
Orders. Di’s report stated the speakers we had over the last
12 months and the donations made to various organisations.
Members agreed that we make the usual donation to
Ilfracombe in Bloom for 2015.
Janet Sanders long service as Treasurer and Speaker’s
Secretary was marked with a card and gift voucher from the
Club. Joyce Johnson has agreed to take over as Treasurer.
The Treasurer’s Audit was presented and accepted and the
Committee was re-elected “en bloc”. Several members are
not well and we wish them a speedy recovery. The Prize
Winners awards went to Jan Cross, Di Wood and Cecily
Challacombe. Flower of the Month awards – Jan Cross,
Doreen Sprague and Pat Nott. After the business of the AGM,
two of our members, Joyce and Rose treated us to a
wonderful demonstration of floral art – with commentary!
The flowers were then raffled and the winners were Maureen
Mann, Margaret Burden, Doreen Sprague and Betty
Blackmore.
The next meeting will be on May 18th at 2.15 in Emmanuel
Church when the speaker will be Janet Kennedy from One
Ilfracombe. New members welcome.

Circle is a modern, vibrant club for women aged 18–45 to
make friends, have fun and support their community. We are
looking for women just like you. If you are interested contact

ILFRACOMBE FLORAL ART CLUB
I can’t believe that this season is passing so quickly! Our March
demonstrator was Margaret Heal whose colourful
arrangements certainly gave us some inspiration. Later in the
month we were shown how to make a crescent arrangement
by Chris. I was unable to make it to the meeting but was told
that everyone enjoyed themselves and made some lovely
displays. This month we have our last meeting before the
summer break. However we will be holding a Spring Show.
We have been persuaded by our Chairman to make sure we
enter our competition on May 25th, so if you would like to
join us at St Philip and St James Church Hall on the late Bank
Holiday Monday you will be made welcome and it’s free entry!

LATE NIGHT MINIBUS SERVICE from Mortehoe and
Woolacombe back to Ilfracombe has started. See the web-site

The Monday Out and About Minibus Club supported the Open
Day at the Calvert Trust on Easter Monday 6 April. Members
were shown around the excellent facilities there and enjoyed
watching families taking part in a range of activities in beautiful
sunshine, followed by lunch at The Pack of Cards, Combe
Martin. The next trips are in May. If you would like details

spring fayre will held in the meadow next to the Memorial

onwards and throughout the afternoon. The fayre will start
at 2pm so plenty of time to come and enjoy a light lunch or

NEWS FROM THE EXMOOR PONY CENTRE,
ASHWICK, DULVERTON TA22 9QE
May half term Activity Day will take place on Thursday 28th
from 12.00 till 3.00; pony rides and grooming, activities for
children and refreshments for all will be available, so come
along and support our local rare breed.
If you wish to arrange moorland rides or Taster sessions
during the May half-term, please book well in advance to
guarantee you get a place. Note that Taster sessions take
place under cover, whatever the weather!
Our Easter Open Day was a great success in lovely sunshine,
adults as well as children enjoying pony rides and
enthusiastic youngsters helping to groom a muddy pony; the
same pony Tom met lots of friends at South Molton Wildlife
Day.
The herd of Exmoor pony mares that travelled to the Czech
Republic were joined in early April by a stallion on their new
99 acre home, reclaiming overgrown land. The local people
seem to be thrilled with their new neighbours and we look
forward to hearing news of offspring of this newly created
herd in 2016.
Recently some new volunteers have joined us; we are very
grateful for the extra help they provide and new friendly
faces at the Centre. If you think you could help us in any way,
whether by mucking out or by holding a fund-raising event,

volunteers taking part in the Golden Horseshoe Pleasure

‘PLAY AND DISPLAY’ – ILFRACOMBE’S ART TRAIL IS THE SOUTH WEST’S HOTSPOT
FOR ARTISTS AND MUSICIANS.
It could be a case of move over St. Ives, there’s a new art town on the block, and our small seaside resort
is set to make waves throughout the art world.
The Ilfracombe Art Trail is taking place over the weekend of May 9th and 10th and is certain to draw
interest from art lovers across the south west as over forty artists exhibit their work in their homes at
twenty-three locations across the town, as well as six gardens.
It all started last year when local papier mâché expert Sue Hutchins and video maker Joanne Beech were
both so impressed by the inclusivity of inner-city artists in Bristol that their inspiration became the
groundwork for showing off Ilfracombe’s burgeoning talent. And now it looks like becoming an annual
celebration.
Gifted amateurs and professionals alike will be demonstrating a panoply of skills with wide varieties of
materials, techniques and subjects sure to delight and intrigue both Ilfracombers and the many expected
visitors drawn to this unique art event.
There will be workshops, live music and poetry readings, and for gourmets, they can enjoy it all whilst
tucking into Devon produce and supping real ale at the Thatch. Ilfracombe’s top rated cafes are joining in
too, with world famous Broomhill Art Hotel open for a feast of organic delights and breathtaking art and
sculpture. Everyone’s invited!
Music and performance lovers can embrace a wide ranging spectrum of events from circus skills to dance
at delightful open-to-all houses, gardens and theatre settings
The Ilfracombe Art Trail initiative is a concept that promises to transform Ilfracombe, now marketed as
possessing Curious Charm, into a cultural hot spot featuring some of the most innovative and stylish
talented artists, potters and sculptors living and working in this region. A rainbow of multimedia crafts will
include stained glass, mosaics and jewellery appealing to all ages and tastes. And they won’t cost a fortune!
Since Damien Hirst’s ‘Verity’ sparked a ‘Marmite’ debate in the town on the 66ft statue, Ilfracombe’s
growing reputation as an ideal location for both musicians and artists to play and display is beginning to
attract worldwide attention. The Art Trail is likely to kick-start interest far beyond county boundaries as
our town’s status soars in the sometimes unpredictable but always fashionable art world.
Ilfracombe Art Trail promises to boost the recognition of local musicians and poets whose work is already
gaining pace. It’s a trail everyone’s welcome to blaze.

WAR LETTERS
The letters this month, all printed in the llfracombe papers in April 1915, are from local men serving on the
Western Front. The Spring of 1915 saw an increase in the action, as these writers reflect.
Chronicle, 10.4.15.
Corpl. H. Eames, 2nd Devon Regiment, wrote:
"We have just finished a five days' battle which the English papers are full of at present. (Neuve Chapelle)
The Regiment was back on a rest, but the old Corps was not allowed to be out of it. We had been back six
days when we had an order to pack up and move. It was on the night of the /" (Sunday). We were
marching practically all night - a night a dog would not go out unless he was forced to do so, as it was
raining torrents. But the boys were in the best of spirits, singing and whistling all along the road. We
reached our billet in the early hours of the morning, and rested for a couple of days, and at midnight on the
9th we moved up to take our position. We halted on the road to take some hot tea, which turned out to
be the last hot stuff we had for four days. We got in position at dawn on the morning of the 10th, and at
7.30 am the battle commenced. Our artillery bombarded the enemy's position for half-an-hour, but in
attacking two regiments were repulsed. The General then gave the order for ours to try and push the
Germans out of it, which we did; but not without the loss of some brave fellows. Once we got them on
the run it was easy. We continued to push on for about two miles, when we had the order to dig
ourselves in, and to remain where we were. During the first day there was hardly any artillery against us,
but on the night of the 10th the enemy got some from somewhere, and from the dawn of the 11th until we
were shifted the following night they simply rained shells into us, (Jack Johnsons and Black Marias) using
every big gun they owned. Really I cannot explain the horrors of it, this was the day poor young Turner
ofPilton, a good chap, was killed. We remained in the firing line until the 13th when we were relieved, and
went into billets for two days, and now we are carrying on with the old trench warfare again. Just before
going into the battle we received a message from the General telling us the eyes of the Army and the
nation were seeing us in the attack we were about to undertake, and after we came out of action we
received another from him of the great success we had achieved. No doubt you will be glad to hear that I
have been made sergeant."

Bert Hutchings was wounded in the attack on Hill 60, and wrote from hospital in London to his brother,
Mr W.C. Hutchings, auctioneer and estate agent.
Dear Old Will, - Just a scrawl to say I have returned from my little trip to Belgium. I cannot give you a full
description of Hill 60, but the papers are very near the point. The good old Q. V.R. were in support, and
were called out about 7 o'clock. As a matter of fact the majority of the boys thought we were being relieved, but we soon discovered we had an appointment with the "Porkers." Talk about shell, machine guns,
and their beastly fume bags; the air was absolutely thick with it. I got presented with a piece of shell on the
chin and went to sleep for a couple of minutes, and when I thought I had sufficient rest I found myself in a
nice "Jack Johnson" hole full of water. A couple of boys helped me out (after leaving all my traps there) and
we got back to Ypres, and here we are in dear old England. I have got off very lucky indeed. Shall try and
pop down home for a week. I had seven of my boys wounded with me in the section I had charge of, but
thank goodness they are going on well.

Workshop: The Victorian Selfie
Experience making a portrait using a real Victorian 8 x10 inch camera. Everything will be provided in this
workshop where you will learn traditional photography with a camera from the 1880’s and learn the basics
of monochrome using light sensitive paper and photographic chemicals in a darkroom. You’ll even get to
take a picture home with you for your new profile!

ILFRACOMBE HARBOUR WEBCAM
The Ilfracombe harbour webcams are now live on a new website which has been produced by Unscramble
Software to accommodate both feeds. The cams are situated on the top of Admirals House (near the
lifeboat station) and the Harbour Office and they are top of the range PTZ (Point-Tilt-Zoom) with infra
red for after dark. This means that the feed, instead of being static, moves around and does a 'tour' of the
harbour area. When events are on then they can be pointed at the action.
The website is www.ilfracombewebcam.com and can be viewed on desktops, mobile devices such as phone
and tablets and also on larger screens such as Smart TVs. The site is operated by the Ilfracombe Tourist
Information Centre and any revenue from the site advertising will be used firstly to pay for the costs of
running the cams and the website (these costs have increased greatly due to the high quality of the feed
which means that it requires specialist streaming and hosting), maintenance and anything left over will be

SHAMMICK ACOUSTIC
After a series of superb and well-attended concerts in the first part of the year, there will be no concert in May as
The Hunting of the Earl of Rone will be taking place in Combe Martin over the Late Spring Bank Holiday weekend.
However, our Open Night will be taking place as usual, on Saturday 9th May, when we will be featuring musician and
singer Tim Graham. Tim has been a Shammick featured performer on a previous occasion, and has asked to come
back, and we’re delighted to welcome him again. He is an interpreter and re-appropriator of folk song and story,
and has been carving out a reputation for his ‘hearty voice and uncluttered Bert Jansch-esque guitar style’. This year
sees the release of his first full-length CD, with a host of other folk luminaries contributing to it. The main reason
for our Open Nights though, is to provide the opportunity for people to give new material an airing or visit older
items from their repertoire in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Anyone is welcome to come along, whether or not they ‘sing, play or say’, and if you’re a musician and you don’t
want to play solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. There’s no admission fee,
although the pot is passed around for contributions to the club’s expenses.
