imeless—Elegant—Unexpected—with fun and adventure at every turn, the perfect retreat
from the 21st century. It’s no surprise meeting planners report that attendance rises
when they meet in America’s Historic Triangle of Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown. The
unmatched combination of hands-on history, thrilling theme parks, world-class golf, arts and
culture, the outdoors, and fine dining, shopping and evening entertainment will delight your
delegates and their families, too.
Meeting Planner Guide I 2013 I Introduction to the Historic Triangle
And, don’t let our size fool you. The Williamsburg area is a major
conference destination that has served as host to some of the world’s
most prestigious and demanding groups. In January 2006, the Virginia
Gubernatorial Inauguration moved to Williamsburg for the first time since
Thomas Jefferson’s in 1779. In 2007, capping a year-long commemoration
of America’s beginnings here in the Historic Triangle, over 500 leaders
from mature and emerging democracies met to explore the future of
democratic institutions around the world.
2
Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance
We can’t forget those meetings held with Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, George
Mason and Patrick Henry debating the ideas of liberty, independence and personal freedom
that led to the founding of American democracy. And how about that “meeting” between
Generals Washington and Cornwallis on the battlefield at Yorktown in 1781? It seems safe to
say that meetings here have been known to change “the course of human events.” In 2007,
after a 50-year hiatus, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth returned to the Historic Triangle for the 400th
Anniversary Commemoration. President George W. Bush also attended ceremonies during
the Commemoration year here in Williamsburg.
Over the years, we have enjoyed the honor of accommodating numerous other prestigious
world visitors including the late Emperor Hirohito of Japan, Lady Margaret Thatcher, Prince
Charles, and more recently Supreme Court Justice and Chancellor of the College of William &
Mary, Sandra Day O’Connor, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, and former Secretary
General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan. Captain John Smith and the early colonists found
their perfect meeting site at Jamestown. Washington, Jefferson and Patrick Henry found
theirs at the Capitol and the Raleigh Tavern. You’re sure to find yours here, too.
From five-star luxury to economy-minded properties, from golf courses to the College of
William & Mary, there’s an ideal meeting spot here just waiting to welcome you. Discover
the story of America’s beginnings at Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area, Jamestown
Settlement, Historic Jamestowne, Historic Yorktown, the Yorktown Battlefield and the
Yorktown Victory Center.
Meeting Planner Guide I 2013 I Introduction to the Historic Triangle
The Business Roundtable, an association of the CEOs of the nation’s 100 largest
corporations, has met here annually since 1995. The U.S. Senate Democratic Caucus and
NATO’s Defense Ministers also chose Williamsburg as their meeting site. In fact, the very
first meeting held in the new world was in July of 1619 in the Church at Jamestown when
America’s first legislative assembly met. In January 2008, the Virginia legislature returned to
the Colonial Capital for its commemorative session held every fourth year.

For contemporary fun, enjoy the worlds of Busch Gardens and Water
Country USA, and sit back and relax at the Williamsburg Winery.
Experience Virginia’s rich heritage and culture at the Watermen’s
Museum, James River Plantations and the Virginia Living Museum.

Thousands of visitors come here each year to explore more than 150 factory
and designer outlet stores in the Williamsburg area, including Williamsburg’s
first indoor shopping mall, The Williamsburg Outlet Mall. From gifts to the
latest fashions, Merchants Square offers one-of-a-kind specialty stores, including handcrafted
reproductions. Shoppers can find gifts for everyone on their list at New Town, see snow at Yankee
Candle and visit the quaint village of Yorktown boasting unique art, antiques and reproductions in a
relaxed atmosphere among the historic streets and on the waterfront at Riverwalk Landing.
For those who like to meet on the golf course, America’s Historic Triangle is one of the top 25
golf destinations in the world with 15 championship courses by the game’s top designers. With
an average daytime temperature of 70 degrees, Williamsburg is the ideal place for golf yearround. Here are just a few quotes about some of our courses: “one of the top 10 new courses in
the United States;” “the highest ranking in Virginia;” “ranked 40th in the top 100 you can play;”
“one of the 50 best golf resorts;” and “outstanding… plan your next vacation around it.”
Centrally located on the eastern seaboard, Williamsburg is 150 miles south of Washington,
DC, midway between Richmond and Virginia Beach. Easily accessible, the Historic Triangle is
served by Amtrak and three major airports: Newport News/Williamsburg International, Norfolk
International and Richmond International. Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport, located just two
miles from Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area, serves private aircraft. Convenient ground
transportation including airport shuttles, rental cars and limousine services are available.
The professional meeting planners who read Successful Meetings Magazine have three times
voted the Greater Williamsburg Chamber & Tourism Alliance the prestigious “Pinnacle” award

fter you’ve immersed yourself in the 18th century for a few days, how about a 21st-century
diversion? Playing golf at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club is exhilarating on several levels.
The club boasts the first side-by-side, father-son layout in the country. The Gold Course,
designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., and the Green Course, designed by Rees Jones, are
favorites among all levels of players. The club offers practice ranges, putting greens and the
executive-length Spotswood Course. The Golden Horseshoe courses combine the challenge of
daring adventure, the enjoyment of a spectacular environment and the
reward of completing a test of skill and perseverance.
Make golf a part of your gathering. Our PGA professionals can put
together clinics that give your team members a chance to learn from
the best. Looking to hone the competitive edge of your team? Consider
making a tournament part of your program. The staff at the Golden
Horseshoe can help you choose a tournament format suited to the
skills and interests of your group. Then, reward the winners at a special
reception or awards presentation.

ntroducing 125 acres of majestic woodlands, ravines, rolling fairways and dramatic hazards.
This is the Gold Course — 18 holes that Robert Trent Jones Sr. called “my finest design.” Par
from the championship tees is 71 over 6,817 yards. Seven holes pose water hazards. The longest
par-5, the 15th, measures 631 yards from the championship tee. The shortest hole, the par-3
16th, plays without fairway to an island green. Equally impressive are the accolades. Golf Digest
ranks the course as one of Robert Trent Jones Sr.’s top six designs, and GOLF Magazine listed
it in the “Top 100 You Can Play” and selected holes 16 and 17 for inclusion in its ranking of the
“Top 500 Golf Holes in the World.” Condé Nast Traveler Magazine named the Gold Course and
the adjacent Williamsburg Inn among its choices for the “75 Top Golf Resorts in the World.”

he Green Course, designed by Rees Jones and opened in 1991, perfectly blends the
challenge of championship golf with a spectacular mix of natural terrain that accommodates
varied playing skills. “It’s rugged land, with lots of ravines and draws,” Rees said. “This is a
shotmaker’s course.” Offering fairways and rough carved from 250 acres of mature woodland, the
Green Course plays 7,120 yards from the championship tees. Water comes into play on six holes,
two played over water and four with lateral hazards. No stranger to excellence, the Green Course
has been a constant among Virginia’s top 10 courses since it opened for play. In fact, it received
4 1/2 stars in Golf Digest’s listing of “Places to Play” and was noted in Zagat Survey: America’s
Top Golf Courses.

Bordered by the James River, the Dye layout contains the
intense challenge and variety expected, placed in a setting of
lush, rolling hills. Kingsmill’s two other courses underscore the
wonderful variety here. The Woods Course, designed by Tom

offers a pure golf experience,
and its thoughtful mix of holes
will test all aspects of your

water hazards on eight holes

Relive the pivotal battle of the Revolutionary War, the site where the mighty British Army
surrendered to the allied French and American forces led by General George Washington. Visit
Yorktown Victory Center, which captures the true life drama
of the American Revolution through galleries telling the stories
of men and women who lived through the war. At Yorktown
Battlefield and Visitors’ Center, tour Washington’s Headquarters,
stand under his tent and walk among the earthworks where
Continental Army soldiers fought. Stroll past the cave where Lord
Cornwallis is said to have hidden or stop at the home of Thomas
Nelson Jr., a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Listen
and march to the sounds of The Fifes and Drums of York Town.
Visit the Watermen’s Museum and learn about the men and
women who make their living on the York River. Enjoy the scenic
beach views while dining at unique restaurants or plan to stay
overnight or longer at a hotel, bed and breakfast inn or guest
cottage overlooking the water. For our ghost hunters, Historic
Yorktown at dusk becomes a whole new adventure. Patriot Tours
& Provisions will have real ghost hunts. Listen to stories of firsthand ghost experiences and hopefully experience your own.
Guests will join our guides in searching for paranormal evidence
using EMF detectors and thermal imaging equipment. Come
back for special events including beach music, swing and other
performances at Riverwalk Landing, Market Days, 4th of July
festivities, Yorktown Day on Oct. 19 and a wide variety of special

first permanent English colony. Expansive
exhibition galleries and an introductory film
trace Jamestown’s beginnings in England and
the first century of the Virginia colony, and
describe the cultures of Powhatan Indians,
Europeans and Africans who converged in
17th-century Virginia. Historical interpreters
depict 1600s life in outdoor re-creations of

Groups can enjoy guided tours, classroom

“Voyage to Virginia,” and self-guided visits.
In addition to daytime touring, the museum features dramatic spaces for after-hours private
events. The venue is perfect for receptions, special occasions, off-site conference events,
reunions, weddings and holiday parties. Whether it’s an evening reception in the rotunda —

Arts Month in Williamsburg
While the Arts flourish every season in Williamsburg, those September days
immediately following Labor Day and into early October are set aside for a period
when the Arts truly take center stage.
The first hints of fall with a gentle breeze announcing the promise of full-colored
leaves soon to come stir the hearts of artists and art lovers alike. It is a quiet time.
A time to enjoy the creative artistry of local and visiting artisans.
Replete with art museums, galleries and artists’ studios, Williamsburg is a visual
delight — and a collector’s dream. Whether your preference is traditional or
contemporary, cutting-edge or classic, all are here in America’s Historic Triangle.
There is also a thriving performing arts community found here, complete with theatre, symphony and
individual performances. Discover the Arts in Williamsburg!

Civil War in Williamsburg
In a harshly fought May 5, 1862 battle, 73,000 combatants met on the very
outskirts of Williamsburg for a single day that took the lives of nearly 1,000
men with twice that number
wounded. From that day until the end of the war,
Williamsburg and its citizenry served under an
occupying force. And the line
dividing two countries was drawn just north of the College of William & Mary,
located in the very heart of Williamsburg.
Plan a visit to Williamsburg and see where battle lines were drawn, defensive
positions placed, townspeople cared for the dead and wounded and where
daily lives continued to exist even in the turmoil surrounding each household.

Christmas in Williamsburg
Williamsburg has long been recognized as one of America’s favorite
Christmas destinations. Each year, throughout the Historic Area of Colonial
Williamsburg, homes and taverns are decorated in holiday finery. Boughs,
wreaths and other decorations are creatively made from all-natural materials.
In Christmas Town, stroll under a canopy of more than two million lights at
Busch Gardens’ celebration of the season. Enjoy the shows, foods, sights and
sounds of Christmas throughout the park. Visit Santa’s Workshop where you
can meet St. Nick himself.
Continue the celebration throughout the Historic Triangle where the season
comes alive at Jamestown Settlement and the Historic Yorktown Village. And leave time for that Christmas
shopping you have yet to complete.
