With electric-yellow blooms covering the bright green, nearly leafless stems in early NEW PLANT: Meadow Sundrops summer, this is a low-growing shrub that loves hot, dry places and is drought tolerant when established. It grows 30-60cm (1-2 feet) high and 1 meter (3-4 feet) wide but must be planted where it will stay because it doesn’t like being transplanted. Hardy to Zone 5, this is an excellent semi-evergreen shrub to fill that period when the spring-blooming shrubs, bulbs and perennials are fading but the summer blooming plants haven’t yet begun their show. All of our Genista lydia are on sale this week at 25% off. Oenothera (een o THEE ruh) pilosella ‘Yella Fella’ is a new introduction of an old favourite. GARDEN PESTS OF THE WEEK: Ants With deep orange-red buds that open to lightly We’ve had an unusually high number of scented, 2” bright golden cup-shaped blooms, people coming in looking for products and advice meadow sundrops bloom throughout the summer on how to get rid of ants. Working on the premise and finish the growing season with a flourish as the that for every person who asks, there are at foliage turns a glowing red. Hardy to USDA Zone 4, least ten people who are wondering, I’ve included sundrops grow about 45cm (18”) high and spread a link to a really good website I found on many 45-60cm (18-24”) and are easy to grow, tolerating different kinds of ants and how to control them. hot sites and infertile, dry soils although they do Of particular interest to me was the section on perform best with adequate moisture. Use in rock carpenter ants because a number of people gardens or at the front of the border. Butterflies mentioned that they’d been told that if you used love sundrops but deer leave them alone. bark or wood mulches, that carpenter ants would inevitably become a problem. (As a horticulturist, I believe that bark mulches are, in most instances, better than rock because they return organic matter to the soil.) I don’t believe that carpenter ants are any more of a problem than are the red or black ants in rock mulch and found the information on the website informative. http://www.orkin.com/ants/ BOX ELDER BUGS Another problem that came up this week was in what do about Box Elder (maple) bugs. Right now the bright red nymphs are evident in and around the garden and, if you step on or squish them, ‘bleed’ bright red. that James and I were building bunkers so we could take pot-shots at each other changed to active curiosity when it became evident that we were putting in raised planting beds built not with wall block but with 70%-sand-filled polypropylene geotextile bags. No concrete, no rebar, no forming, and often no levelling pad are needed. And it costs less than concrete wall block! Once the walls were built and the beds planted, the most striking part of the project took form; a ‘living’ wall. It’s possible to plant into the bags and this is being done in large highway projects with pre-seeded bags or hydroseeding, but more aesthetically pleasing ‘living walls’ can also be grown with this system. We’ve planted our wall with a combination of sempervivums (hens and chicks), sedums (stonecrops), ornamental grasses and microclover. Consensus of opinion is that it looks fabulous already but I know it will just get better and better as the plants get established and cover the fabric to create a tapestry of colours and textures! This picture shows the adult and nymph stages. While these bugs do favour box elder (Manitoba maple – Acer negundo) trees, you’ll find them where other varieties of maples grow as well. To learn more about them check out this link: http://www.extension.umn.edu/garden/insects/find/boxelder-bugs/ The information on the website is good but because it’s American, few of the controls that are mentioned are available to us except permethrin which is the active ingredient in many of the organic pesticides we stock such as BugBGon. SO WHAT’S NEW? Flex MSE Many of you have been following with interest the structure we’ve built at the front of our market building. The initial speculation We’re now selling the bags and have information on the Flex MSE system. You can also learn more by going to the company’s website: http://www.flexmse.com/ APPLE LANE GIFTS: Herb knives No doubt you’ve planted your herbs but, if not, we still have lots of great varieties on hand. The best advice I can give you on growing herbs is to give them as much sunshine as possible and to harvest them regularly. Don’t let them go to seed, if possible, to keep leaf production ongoing. Some of my favourite herbs like thyme and basil need to be stripped from the stems before use and this can be a tedious step. The herb knives and snips we have in stock are either notched or have well-placed holes through which the stems can be pulled. For herbs like chives where what’s needed is multiple cuts with each stroke, we have herb scissors with multiple blades for true efficiency!
