We can help those suffering because of the major political and social upheavals around the world by rallying round to support relief organisations and those promoting peace. We can help those suffering from personal difficulties by rallying round and offering the hand of friendship and the comfort of understanding and companionship. There are just two words that I would like to say to you, and those are THANK YOU! Thank you to all of you who have given so generously to our ceiling appeal. The response has been tremendous and we are well on our way to meeting our target. I have been deeply moved by the way that the other churches, local organisations, local businesses and individuals have been so supportive. The whole village has rallied round its parish church in its hour of need. That is marvellous and it means that we shall have the church open again from Sunday 6th April. Towards the end of April we shall celebrate Easter. We shall remember how God raised Jesus from death and that he is alive today. Some people find that hard to believe but one of the ways that Jesus lives today is in the lives of those who love and care for others. Those who rally round and offer help in times of need. This has been a difficult time for us all because we have not been able to use our church for five months. But those difficulties are put into perspective for me when I look at all the problems there are in the world, and all the difficulties there often are in people’s lives. This Easter will be very special for us in Holy Trinity as we enjoy being back in our lovely church. We will meet to rejoice that Jesus is alive. He is alive in you and me every time we rally round and share his love. Life is hard for many people, but we are supported in those hardships when other people rally round and help us. Just as you rallied round and helped the church, we can all rally round to help those we see in need. With love and gratitude to you all, 2 The Elms Nursing Home, Swains Road, Bembridge, Isle of Wight PO35 5XS Tel: 01983 872248 (Mon – Fri 9am to 5pm) 07860 152224 (Out of office hours) Email: info@courtdrift.co.uk For further information contact: Clive Wade Tel: 874855 or Chris Emms Tel: 875800 For details ring 865264 ALAN ATTRILL Hairdressing in your own home CARPENTER Mark will come to you Painter & Decorator Floor & Wall Tiling Laminate Floors 20 years experience Phone Mark on Tel: 873708 Mobile: 07702 193387 07584 132327 3 HOLY WEEK and EASTER at HOLY TRINITY PALM SUNDAY 13th April MAUNDY THURSDAY 17th April 10.20 am Palm Sunday procession beginning in The Cloisters 7.30 pm Holy Communion in the Cloisters We meet in the Cloisters’ garden to begin our Palm Sunday service by acting out Jesus entry into Jerusalem. We will walk in procession into church and then think about what happened to Jesus on Good Friday. We shall try to recreate something of the atmosphere of the upper room where Jesus met with his disciples for the last supper by meeting in The Cloisters. We shall have a quiet reflective service of Holy Communion with space to think and pray. We shall eat and drink with Jesus, as his disciples did, to prepare ourselves to contemplate all that happened on Good Friday. 10.30am Parish Communion GOOD FRIDAY 18th April 12.00 noon - 2.00 pm The Church will be open for private prayer and meditation EASTER EVE 19th April 2.00 pm The Liturgy of Good Friday 8.00 pm Easter Vigil A Service of readings, hymns and prayers where we accompany Jesus on his journey to the Cross The Easter Vigil and Lighting of the Pastoral Candle is an ideal preparation for the celebrations of Easter Day. In this dramatic and short service we begin with the Church in darkness. After we have listened to suitable readings from Holy Scripture the new Easter Candle is brought into the Church to symbolise the light of the Risen Christ. We then switch on all the lights and reveal the Church decorated ready for the Easter celebrations. There is then an opportunity for us to renew our Baptismal Vows. The lifeboat deployed it’s on board “Y” class dinghy and recovered the two men after which they were taken aboard the lifeboat, helped out of their wet clothing, wrapped in blankets and after assessing their condition, were given hot drinks. On the afternoon of Wednesday 26th February, during investigative sea trials, the all-weather lifeboat “Alfred Albert Williams” was requested by Solent coastguard to respond to reports from a member of the public, of a flashing light off Southsea sea front. Despite searching, nothing was found and it was believed that it had been the sun reflecting off a buoy which had been the cause for alarm. Following discussions between Bembridge and Portsmouth lifeboat crews, it was decided that the casualties should be handed over to the Portsmouth crew, who took them to their station to warm up and recover. The sea trials were resumed; however at 3.20pm another request came from Solent coastguard following an emergency VHF radio call that a small speedboat had capsized off Langstone harbour. On arrival at the scene, two men were The lifeboat then continued with the sea trials, returning to station in the early evening. Coffee morning – Saturday, 26th April: The RNLI Lifeboat Guild will be holding a Spring Coffee Morning at the Village Hall from 10am to 12 midday. There will be sales of cakes, books, jewellery, bric-a-brac and lifeboat souvenirs. There will also be a raffle. As always, all money raised will go directly towards the lifeboats and help to save lives at sea. The coffee morning on the 14th March raised £454. Many thanks to all who braved a cold, blustery day and supported the event. continued page 9 8 Are you thinking of buying or selling a house? Making or updating a Will? Arranging a Power of Attorney? Our chairman Phil welcomed the members to the AGM of Bembridge Townswomen’s Guild. The evening began with a talk from Mark O'Sullivan from the organisation Age UK Isle of Wight. He came with his colleague Debbie to explain about the Good Neighbour Scheme which has been introduced across the island. It is being a good neighbour to the more elderly in our communities, which is something many people already do, but the scheme, run by islanders for islanders, offers a blanket of support to all volunteers. All volunteers are given an induction meeting which covers aspects of health and safety and are DBS checked. The hours you volunteer for are up to the individual, also what you volunteer for. There are many ways to help other people from shopping to dog walking, from a simple visit to computer skill support. Many events are provided for the volunteers including coffee mornings and lunches. The joy of having a recognised agency behind you means that when you are unable to help, other volunteers can step in to cover for you until you can assist again. After a welcome cup of coffee we got onto the business matters. Our forth-coming Coffee Morning was discussed and organised. A trip to Thompsons Garden Centre during March or April was arranged, and the Activity group are hoping to visit LA Bowl. Supper Club will be at Foxes this month. We then went on to the AGM Our chairman Phil Liddiard gave her chairman's report. We have had a very successful year supporting many local charities, being educated by some really interesting speakers and have had some entertaining sessions. Diana gave a very comprehensive financial report, informing us that during the past year we have raised over £1,600 pounds for charitable organisations on the island. continued page 12 12 continued from page 11 Our yearly trophies were presented. The list of committee members was next on the agenda: Chairman Phil Liddiard Vice-Chairman Annette Halls Treasurer Diana Hetherington Secretary Annette Halls Ann Gilham, Angela Carver, Gill Webb, Pat Mills, Marion Morgan, Janet Holloway and Dot Harrison. Just a few weeks before his own death at the age of only thirty five, Mozart was approached by a gentleman acting on behalf of an anonymous patron who wished to commission from him a Requiem Mass. This patron we now know to be Count Franz von Walzlsegg- Stuppach, whose wife had died in February that year. The Count, who was a keen and able amateur musician, wished to be regarded as a major composer and saw in this commemorative commission an opportunity to further his own ends by passing off the Requiem as his own. He therefore conducted all business transactions with Mozart in secrecy so as to preserve his own anonymity; hence the subterfuge of sending a business agent to act on his behalf. By the time he started work on the Requiem Mozart was already terminally ill, and parts of the composition were actually written whilst on his death-bed. In the event, he died before he could complete it, to the great consternation of his widow, Constanze. Payment for the work had already been received, and she feared that if it was handed over incomplete the commissioning patron would refuse to receive it and expect his money to be returned. She therefore decided to elicit the help of some other composer who might be able and willing to finish it for her. Eventually Constanze approached Franz Sussmayr. There were many advantages to this arrangement; Sussmayr was one of Mozart’s more able pupils and had been with him a good deal during the final year of his life. He had several times played through the completed parts and discussed the instrumentation with Mozart. Why, then, had Sussmayr not been Constanze’s first choice, despite the fact that he had been the composer’s closest musical confidante and knew what his intentions were in respect of the Requiem? This is but one of several intriguing questions, the answers to which we will almost certainly never know, but which will no doubt continue to fascinate musical historians. Bembridge Choir will be performing the Mozart Requiem and the Vivaldi Gloria at St John’s Church, Ryde on Saturday 5 April at 7.30pm Tickets priced at £5.00 can be obtained at the door, from choir members or from “The Ink Shop”, Lane End, Bembridge Proceeds will go to the Holy Trinity Church, Bembridge, ceiling appeal 26 CORGI REGISTERED MEMBER OF THE INSTITUTE OF PLUMBING (Incorporating PAUL CHAPPLE HEATING) PLUMBING AND HEATING – COMPLETE BATHROOMS AND TILING Telephone: 612611 • Mobile: 07774 892712 Stonehaven, Seaview Lane, Seaview, Isle of Wight, PO34 5DG Now in Bembridge! “legal advice with a human face” Ѽ Ѽ Ѽ Ѽ Ѽ Ѽ Best value Wills on the Island Fixed fee conveyancing with no hidden charges Non-confrontational, fixed fee, Family Law ‘Real World’ legal solutions for business Free case assessments & ‘no-win-no-fee’ litigation Help with planning for your later years T: (01983) 617551 5 Foreland Road PO35 5XN By appointment only See Web site for map Ѽ E: help@rjr.co.uk Ѽ W: www.rjr.co.uk Bembridge Jewellers For all your Jewellery, Watch & Gift requirements and Repairs, including Ring Sizing/Alterations/Stones replaced/Pearl Stringing etc. Guaranteed Repairs to all makes of Watches Estimates Free Watch Batteries and Straps fitted While You Wait Open 9am - 1pm Tuesday to Saturday The Old Bank, Sherbourne Street, Bembridge PO35 5SB Tel: 875333 27 The Bembridge to Brading Railway Now I do not claim to be railway expert but a few things stick in my mind regarding the above. My mother’s parents ran the ‘Wheatsheaf’ in Brading so we often visited. This entailed Mum pushing the pram with my sisters in it all they way down to ‘Point’ buying tickets from Mr Lee the Station Master. Then waiting for the train to arrive, for the engine to be disconnected, put on the turntable, then taken down to the back of the train and reconnected ready for the journey back to Brading. Meanwhile we would be loaded, pram and all, into the guards van and then set off for the full three miles to Brading. First, St Helens Station, then, on to the level crossing at Brading Cement Mills and finally to Brading. The driver then handed back a bag to the signal man to confirm the branch line to Bembridge was clear. Upon return we would load the same way, the driver would retrieve the bag and off we would go. Of course it was enormously inefficient commercially with the driver/s fireman/men, signal box crew, Station Masters at Brading, St Helens and Bembridge plus various booking clerks and the level crossing keeper (complete with his own house) so no surprise when it closed in 1953. I also remember buying a Crown coin (five shillings and very rare) from Mr Lee, who, by the way, lived in a flat over the main station building. On the final run we (most of Bembridge) set off from Bembridge to Brading, Mr Wheeler (the gasman) played the ‘last post’ on the Platform and home we came. The communication cord was pulled five times so they disconnected it (‘ealf and safety’!!!) – rumour has it John H…e was the culprit. The Spithead Hotel, built opposite the station then went into decline – now we have Solent Landing. The Pilot Boat remains, but the Smugglers Barn and the Marine (latterly called the Row Barge) have gone as have most of the bars in Bembridge! Business matters were reported and our February outing to Shanklin Theatre to see Agatha Christie’s ‘The Hollow’ and March outing to IOW College for lunch were discussed. The winners of our two bursaries towards educational courses were drawn. Then we settled down to a much anticipated talk by Style Coach, Dee Becker whose task it was to impart her great sense of style, colour and general fashion sense to our Group. Dee’s talk was fun and entertaining as well as very interesting and informative. All we need to do now is implement the tips and lessons learned! Our meetings are held at 7.30pm on the third Monday of each month at The Cloisters, High Street, Bembridge. Visitors and new Members are always welcome. Contact Brenda on 811022 or visit our web site for further information http://bembridgewindmillwi.atspace.com The Speaker at our April meeting will be Mark Sullivan, Manager of Age Concern ‘Good Neighbour Scheme’ Art for the Non Artist Once again Don led us in a very successful tutorial morning. We received instruction on proportion and picture composition and then, it was over to the group. Among the laughs and cheerful banter each member of the group managed to produce a pleasing painting of Bembridge Redwings or other assorted sailing boats. As well as providing an enjoyable social occasion the event raised £81 for church funds. A big thank you to Don and to all who attended Linda 32 www.bembridgeblooms.org.uk Meetings: Friday April 4th at 7:15pm – Ventnor Botanic Garden Saturday April 12th at 10am – Coffee Morning Friday April 25th at 7:15pm – A Day at Buckingham Palace This month we have a talk about the Botanic Gardens at Ventnor, so why not enjoy a trip over there one day – there is always something interesting to see, no matter what the weather. For details of opening times, go to www.botanic.co.uk Pickofthismonth’splants FourthingstodoinApril 1) Now is a good time to divide your perennials to make new plants. It is a cheap and easy way to propagate, and to rejuvenate the parent plant. Later flowerers such as asters and rudbeckia are particularly suitable. 2) Easter, which falls in April this year, is the traditional time to plant potatoes. Make a deep channel for your seed potatoes and then mound it up with soil to protect from both frost and sunlight. Make sure you continue to “earth up” the plants as they grow. The Magnolia is a plant with a long pedigree, said to have first appeared over 65 million years ago in North America. With its large, almost leathery petals, it was designed to be pollinated by big beetles, rather than bees which evolved later. Magnolias make a spectacular show at this time of year but, being highly susceptible to frost and wind damage, they often have a disappointingly short flowering season. They do best when the weather warms up gradually after a cold winter. Most prefer acidic soil, but Magnolia stellata with its delicate white, star‐shaped blooms, is an exception. 3) Gladioli make excellent cut flowers. Plant corms in rows, spaced 15cm apart. They take about 100 days to flower, so if you plant at intervals during April, you should have plenty of blooms in July and August. 4) Get along to the garden centre to choose plug plants for your tubs and hanging baskets. 33
