Learn: "GBDFA" Song.
The GBDFA song is funny and the
lyrics help students remember
that these pitches belong to the
bass clef lines.
Draw a bass clef staff and place a quarter note on each line as shown. Have the
students come to the chalkboard and place the correct letter beneath each of the
notes.
Draw a picture of a grizzly bear flying an airplane crashing into the bass clef.
Do you sometimes doodle drawings to better
understand a concept? Activities such as
drawing pictures to illustrate concepts
reinforce and help students remember the
lesson objectives. This activity time is time
well spent.

GBDFA Story.
Hi, it’s me, Quincy. I want to tell you a story.
One day I was standing in a field near my house in the Land of Music. All of a sudden, I
heard the sound of a small airplane. When I looked up, I saw a strange sight. The pilot of the
airplane was a grizzly bear!

49
GBDFA Story.
That airplane crashed right down into the field where I was standing! I was a little afraid.
I didn’t know if the pilot was a friendly bear or not!

GBDFA Story.
The furry pilot got out of the plane. He rubbed his sore backside and said, “Harumph!
Every time I try to fly this thing, it comes crashing down!” I said, “That’s because grizzly bears
don’t fly airplanes!”

51
GBDFA Story.
As soon as I said it, I got an idea. I could take the G from Grizzly, the B from Bears, the
D from Don’t, the F from Fly, and the A from Airplane to teach the names of the bass clef lines.

GBDFA Story.
Griz thought it was a great idea, too! So just remember that the names of the lines of the
bass clef, starting with the bottom line and moving up, are G,B,D,F,A. Those are the first letters
of each of the words Grizzly Bears Don’t Fly Airplanes!

53
GBDFA Story.
You can remember that these are the names of the bass clef lines by thinking about a
grizzly bear’s deep growl. Grrr. It sounds low, just like the low sounds in the bass clef, the
lower floor of a songhouse.
