2015 Annual Report - YMCA of Greater Manchester
GROW. THRIVE. TRANSFORM. 2015 Annual Report | THE GRANITE YMCA BUILD WITH US A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT & CEO Dear Members of The Granite YMCA, Two years ago, The Granite YMCA trustees and staff approved a new strategic plan with a vision to build a stronger, healthier and more harmonious community through new programs to be offered at all of our branches. Our belief was that by focusing on developing healthy children of strong character, strengthening families and building leadership around social responsibility, that the YMCA could be a major force in changing the fabric of our community. These were lofty goals but I’m pleased to report that we have done just that and it is exciting to see. As of this report, we are on our third launch of our character development programs for youth having rolled out this initiative in all of our camps, child care programs and aquatics. This has involved over 3,000 youth who are taught, mentored and recognized for displaying outstanding character. They receive awards as “character rock stars” and it is really fantastic to see our children embrace becoming role models of outstanding character. Our staff has been trained in a new program called “Courage to Care,” an anti-bullying curriculum for teens which asks them to step up when bullying occurs and be an advocate of caring, empathy and respect of others. This is part of a major initiative to provide safe and enriching opportunities for teens. We are building two new Centers for Youth and Teen Leadership this year in Manchester and Goffstown as a part of our current $3.1 million dollar capital campaign. This, along with expansions at our day and resident camps, will serve thousands of youth. It’s been a really exciting year for promoting healthy lifestyles. We have received major grants in excess of $100,000 to expand our LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program for cancer survivors, the MoveWell Today Diabetes Prevention Program and Prescribe the Y to support chronically obese youth. By the end of next year, these programs will be running at our five facility branches. Serving families continues to be a central focus by providing child care for over 1,600 kids each day in our YMCA child care programs. Special events such as Healthy Kids Day, Brunch with Santa, halloween parties and family summer camp events are very popular. Families represent over half of our YMCA memberships. More financial aid is given to families each year to ensure we include all of our community members. This year over 19,000 individuals received financial aid or free services. As one of New Hampshire’s longest standing and most enduring non profits, the Y is growing, thriving and making a positive difference in the lives of our youth, families and communities. Our five facility branches and two resident camps are all doing well and meeting our mission to build a healthy spirit, mind and body. Thanks so much to all of our donors, volunteers and staff who keep our vision alive to build community through The Granite YMCA. 2015 Annual Report | The Granite YMCA | 3 With a presence in neighborhoods across the state, we help people of all ages and from all walks of life to learn, grow and thrive by developing the skills and relationships they need to be healthy, confident, and connected to others. OUR MISSION AT THE GRANITE YMCA IS TO CREATE A COMMUNITY WHERE ALL ARE WELCOME AND BUILD A HEALTHY SPIRIT, MIND AND BODY BASED ON THE VALUES OF CARING, HONESTY, RESPECT, AND RESPONSIBILITY. GAINING CONFIDENCE YMCA START is an Achievement Gap after school program serving 125 low-income students from Henry Wilson and Beech Street Schools in Manchester, NH. The curriculum includes 2.5 hours daily of academic tutoring, physical fitness, 21st century skills, nutrition, art education, community building, and teamwork. 82% of our participants speak a language other than English at home, so START helps families who need support understanding American culture and schools. Last year, 100% of START students improved at least two reading levels, achieved a 94% attendance rate and 75% of START students were recognized as citizens of the month by their schools. Camp provides memories that last a lifetime. At the Y, we believe that every new experience is a chance for every child to learn and grow. That is why, every day, we give kids the opportunity to test their limits and explore their potential. Every summer, our camps are home to thousands of kids exploring healthy fun and adventure, growing personally, and making friends. Camp scholarships ensure all kids have the opportunity to experience summer the way kids should. “Camp Foss has played an important role in growing my leadership skills. I can’t thank the counselors enough for the amazing experience. The time I’ve spent at Camp Foss was the time of my life. I made so many great friends that I still stay in touch with. My counselors were true role models. I only hope that someday I can become a counselor and make as much of a difference in other campers lives as they did for me.” – D. Damsell 6 | Exeter, NH | www.graniteymca.org After school care is a cornerstone program of our Y that gives children a secure, supportive environment to develop academic and interpersonal skills. Healthy snacks, CATCH physical and nutrition activities, and an enriching curriculum help keep kids happy, healthy and active. Offered at 23 sites statewide, the program served more than 1,600 children each day last year. Enroll your child today! For more information, visit www.graniteymca.org/childcare. LEARNING LEADERSHIP The Teen Center at the YMCA of Downtown Manchester is a FREE educational and activitybased program that offers fun and engaging ways for kids to build friendships and awareness of social responsibility in a supervised environment. It is open to Y teen members and non-members ages 11-16 years old who are in at least middle school. Activities include daily tutoring and homework help, ping pong, foosball, movies, gym games, swimming, video games, computer, and board games. Last year, over 1,100 students were involved in the Teen Center. Help support the Teen Center by donating supplies from their Wish List http://www.graniteymca.org/ index.php?page=support-donate at The Leader and Counselor in Training programs at our six YMCA camps introduce teens to the skills needed to become leaders. These programs introduce teens to the Y leadership philosophy, effective communication, team building, and behavior management techniques through role playing in a camp setting. Leaders in Training is designed to teach teens what it takes to be a good role model for other campers. This program serves as both a great stepping stone to the Counselor in Training program and as a great leadership experience. The Counselor in Training program includes workshop trainings in areas of personal development, decision making techniques, group work skills, and program leadership. Teen Leaders Club is a nationally recognized YMCA teen program that provides participants with opportunities for leadership training, personal growth, service to others and social development. Teens meet on a weekly basis in small groups, working closely with their peers and adult advisors on skill and character-building activities, as well as planning and organizing projects. The program emphasizes educational success, community service and leadership development. Leaders Club helps teens ages 1218 find the leader within. “I cannot express to you what a gift Camp Mi-Te-Na turned out to be for my son. He thrived and loved every minute of the experience. I truly believe that this was a life changing event for him. He is a teenage boy trying to decide who he wants to be, and camp helped him put some of his choices in perspective. Working with boys this age can be difficult. My son was able to find friends his age that were enthusiastic about all kinds of different interests. He has accumulated quite a few sports trophies over the years, but the item he is most proud of is the “crescent” medal he earned for waterfront. He explained that it was more than just being good at something, but it was about how he treated everyone, his peers and counselors. I sent you a boy and got back a young man that is on his way to become a tremendous leader that I am very proud of. ” – C. McCarry, Scituate, MA 8 | www.graniteymca.org 2015 Annual Report | The Granite YMCA | 9 LEARNING LEADERSHIP Volunteer Ric Freeman is a firm believer in second chances. Years ago in middle school, he struggled with his grades, was bullied and battled low self-esteem. “We lived in a tough neighborhood and didn’t have much. I had a learning disability and things at school were not good at all,” he recalled. “Simply put, I was in a very tough spot and needed help.” STAY is Manchester’s only program for at-risk middle school students. Students learn timemanagement, educational, and decision-making skills and develop positive social interactions and relationships. Last year, 83% of STAY students improved attendance from the prior school year and 79% improved their GPA from the previous school year. Enter The Granite YMCA and its STAY Program. The only program in Manchester for at-risk middle school students, STAY helps students build social, time-management, educational, and decision-making skills. Through adventure and educational trips, students learn to challenge themselves and build the confidence they need to make changes in their lives. Ric was enrolled in STAY and the turnaround began. “At STAY I gained confidence,” he said. The teachers in the program taught me that if you work hard enough and are committed, you could do anything. I learned how to set goals and achieve them.” Freeman credits the STAY program for providing him with a solid foundation which helped him to graduate from high school, attend and graduate from college and get a great job. “STAY gave me the tools I needed to succeed.” Today, Ric works at Fidelity Investments in Merrimack NH and in his spare time, is part of the STAY program once again, this time as a volunteer mentor. Earlier this year, in recognition of his selfless efforts, The Granite YMCA named Freeman as the organization’s 2014 Volunteer of the Year. “I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor,” said Hal Jordan, CEO of The Granite YMCA. “Ric embodies the true volunteer spirit and mission of the Y. By participating as a mentor and role model for the kids in the Y STAY program, he is inspiring them to be the best they can be.” In 2015, 83% of STAY students improved attendance from the prior school year and 79% improved their GPA from the previous school year. “Thanks to the instructors and volunteers like Ric, this program is having a lasting and positive impact on local youth.” For his part, Freeman is both honored and humbled by the award. “For me, STAY was a true catalyst and gave me a new opportunity to succeed. Now as an adult, I’m thrilled to be able to share my experiences and help others benefit.” 10 | www.graniteymca.org “STAY was a perfect outlet for my energies, but it also taught me that I could be different. Things could be different. Life could be what I wanted it to be. It wasn’t easy to change things, but I knew that things could be changed. I wanted things to be different. I wanted to be different.” – Erich Foster PhD. Mathematics Virginia Tech BECOMING STRONG The MoveWell Today Diabetes Exercise Program is an intervention program for individuals diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes or for those who are considered pre-diabetic and have risk factors for diabetes. This program follows the American College of Sports Medicine and American Diabetes Association guidelines for aerobic exercise and resistance training specific for coaching clients with diabetes. Participants gain valuable knowledge and self-management tools to help improve their health. Prescribe the Y is a free, 24 session, physician referred evidence-based program for children ages 6-12 years with a BMI of 85% or higher. Prescribe the Y will educate youth and their families to incorporate healthy behaviors in their lives so they can reduce their BMI and increase their activity levels. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a FREE 12week, small group program for adult cancer survivors. Through this program, we support cancer survivors in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the time of feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to return to their normal life. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is about health, not disease. For more information about Prescribe the Y, contact Erin Mitchell at emitchell@graniteymca.org “The Y has been my foundation, my locker room, my solace, my meeting ground for nearly 50 years!! It is here that I train for triathlons, strength train, do yoga (the magic bullet!) hone my skills in clinics and classes, and most importantly touch base with friends, training partners and talk to the best members and greeters every day! ” – Lynda Lubelczyk 12 | www.graniteymca.org BECOMING STRONG Two years ago, there was a time when taking a short walk to the mailbox constituted a vigorous workout for Rochester’s Kathy Peteya. “I had a number of health issues and just walking was a challenge,” she recalls. Enter the YMCA of Strafford County (YSC). “My husband and I attended the Y’s open house, toured the facility and met their staff,” she said. “Someone suggested that the Fit for Life program might be a good way for me to start an exercise program. I tried it and was instantly hooked!” Designed for those with mobility issues or who are new to exercise, the Y’s Fit For Life group exercise classes include strength, flexibility and relaxation training, all in a caring and supportive environment. “It was a wonderful way to be introduced to an exercise program,” Kathy notes. “You form bonds with others in the program as you make healthy improvements together.” Aquatic arthritis classes provide low impact water aerobic exercise combined with muscle toning activities to create a full body workout for those with “rusty hinges.” The class incorporates interval training and equipment such as hydro buoys to provide an entire body workout and offers all of the health benefits of traditional aerobics but avoids the pounding and jarring. Swimming ability is not required - laughter and comradery guaranteed! Take a class today! www.graniteymca.org/schedules Fast forward to the present and the retired Office Manager has increased her activity level and decreased the need for many of her medications. She maintains her work-out routine at the Y and has drawn from her personal experiences to help encourage others toward better health. She shared her story as part of a moving speech at YSC’s annual breakfast this past spring, inspiring more than 100 attendees by sharing her “health journey.” As further proof of her “pay it forward” attitude, Kathy has also joined YSC’s Advisory Board and the newly formed Marketing Advisory Committee. “Kathy has long served as a cheerful and tireless advocate for health and wellness,” said Julie Costello, District Vice President and Branch Director at the YMCA of Strafford County. “We are thrilled to have her participation as a volunteer and greatly value her energy and enthusiasm in supporting our mission.” For her part, Kathy looks forward to continuing to spread a positive message. “There truly is a place for everyone at the Y, regardless of health status or limitations,” she said. “They can help you on your journey to better health and I’m proof of that.” 2015 Annual Report | The Granite YMCA | 15 ENSURING INCLUSION At the Granite YMCA, we believe our memberships, programs, and services should be accessible to all. We welcome anyone regardless of age, race, sex, ethnicity or religion. We also offer income-based membership rates and are proud to say that last year, 6,284 individuals received $568,916 in financial assistance so they could be part of the Y. Among the many 2015 highlights for The Granite YMCA was an innovative wellness partnership with the state’s university system. Formally introduced in September, the “Wildcat Wellness Program” provided UNH Manchester students with an exciting new array of health and wellness options, giving all full time students who utilize the Manchester campus full membership privileges at all five locations of The Granite YMCA. The Wheelchair Health in Motion program (WHIM) is hosted weekly by the Y. The program is focused on helping individuals who use a wheelchair for mobility gain access to health promoting activities and information to enhance their quality of life. “Working out at the Y has made me healthier. It helps me to learn how to care for my body and has made it possible for me to connect with people who encourage me to move forward and stay healthy.”- Kevin Bonoyer “This is an amazing opportunity for our students,” said J. Michael Hickey, Dean of UNH Manchester. “While our new campus in the millyard offers a world class academics environment, our health and wellness opportunities until now were limited. This collaboration helps complete that circle and expands our campus to include the YMCA.” Dean Hickey added that employees of The Granite YMCA will also benefit from this partnership through tuition grants which will provide reduced fee course enrollments. “Our daily mission is to support healthy bodies and healthy minds,” added The Granite YMCA President and CEO Hal Jordan. “This collaboration with the University is very much in keeping with that philosophy. The students benefit from a wellness perspective and our employees can take advantage of the tuition grants.” By early November, over 320 students had enrolled in the program and both Dean Hickey and Mr. Jordan spoke of the partnership as further evolving over time. “As we move forward, we’ll be looking to continually meet the needs of students,” Mr. Jordan noted, adding that future opportunities for students would support club sports and the addition of intramural and specialized sports programs. ”And because of our reciprocal arrangement with other YMCAs, UNH Manchester students will have access to other Ys in NH as well as throughout New England.” “This has been and will continue to be a truly collaborative process,” said Dean Hickey. “In building this program, staff from both organizations as well as our students have been closely involved. We view this as a true win-win.” The two organizations are working to complete the second phase of the effort, which will include YMCA access for UNH faculty and staff across the state. Doug Ewing YMCA Allard Center of Goffstown Advisory Board member 2015 Annual Report | The Granite YMCA | 17 REACHING EXCELLENCE In 1990, demolition of the Berlin wall began, George H.W. Bush was half-way through his first and only term as president and the “Furby” toy was among the must haves for American children. The year also marked the formal start of the then Greater Manchester YMCA’s Wrestling team, led by Coach Rick Ross. Twenty five years later, more than 650 wrestlers have gone through the program and many have gone on to compete on high school teams, with some wrestling at the college level. Still other former Eagles are now coaches in local schools. “Looking back, it has been a wonderful experience,” Rick says. The veteran coach retired from the program this past spring, but not before leaving a lasting legacy for hundreds of athletes and their families. “Rick embodies both a great coach and positive role model,” said Hal Jordan, President and CEO of The Granite YMCA. “He literally built this program from the ground up and has provided a wonderful foundation for our program going forward. He will be greatly missed by many.” Rick, who was honored at the Eagles Spring Banquet this past April, says that among the many joys of coaching for him, was witnessing the growth of those in the program. “The sport has provided many athletes with cross-training skills which has helped them excel at other sports. For many, it served as an important building block for them as individuals, helping them to develop confidence, a work ethic and mutual respect for the sport, their teammates and opponents.” 18 | www.graniteymca.org BRINGING CHANGE To hear Janet Diamantis tell it, volunteer service and donor support for The Granite YMCA is an enduring tradition in her family as valuable for the donor/volunteer as it is for the association itself. “Throughout my involvement at the Y, I have been continually uplifted by the interactions I’ve had as a volunteer and donor,” she said. “It’s been a truly gratifying experience and one I wouldn’t trade for anything else.” A native of Manchester, Janet and her family have served as volunteers and donors to The Granite YMCA for almost 30 years. “The YMCA has always been part of our lives,” she shared. “My children came to the Y and now my grandchildren come to the Y. My daughter Pamela and I have volunteered in various capacities, my daughter Cathy serves as a volunteer fitness leader, and my daughter Lisa has been a member over the years. It really has become part of the fabric of our family.” Among her favorite volunteer duties, said Janet, is reading to children at the Y’s early learning center. “That truly has been one of the great joys for me. The connection you are able to make with the little ones there is a powerful one. The expressions on their faces is priceless, they inspire me!” The love of reading and literature is the driving force behind a current YMCA project that Janet is spearheading in developing an on-site library at the YMCA of Downtown Manchester. “Our slogan is ‘today a reader, tomorrow a leader,’” added Janet. “And that’s why it is important that we provide resources for children to learn and grow.” To date, she has collected and cleaned almost 800 books that will be part of this new effort. As important as it is to read and speak with children, Janet says that listening is an equally valuable tool. “The kids have a lot to say and often need someone to listen. Every child has a unique and special story to tell.” And what advice would Janet have for those considering volunteering or donating to The Granite YMCA? “Your dollars and or gift of your volunteer time can make a real difference and have a profound impact upon people’s lives, but what you get back as a supporter of the YMCA is so much more.” 347 IN 2015...
