NOTE: Be carefulnot to bendthe retainers(fingers)thatkeeptheball bearingsin place.Thesetabskeeptheball bearings from falling out wheneverthereare no stringsto keepthem in place(i.e. whenchangingstringsor whena stringbreaks).If the retainersarebentor damagedthe ball bearingscanfall out andbecomelost. They may not be available at small neighborhood stores. If vou cannot locate these items you u'ill have to take 1our guitar to an authorized Fender service center to have your Fender L.S.R.roller nut installed. l) Take the strings offthe guitar. Next. remove the rn'o #3 screus holding the Wilkinson roller nut in place and remoye the nut. Also. remove an1'shims that may be under the nut 2) Fill in the existing screwholesin the neck with round toothpicks. Cut approximately3/8" off the sharp endsof the toothpick so that the endsarejust slightly smaller in diameterthan the holesin the neck. Cut the toothpick in half. Coat the smaller end with super glue and lightly tap it into the hole u'ith a small mallet. Use acceleratorto harden the glue or allow adequate drying time (up to severalhours dependingon how much excessglue is present). White glue may also be used.but again. allo* adequate dryingtime. 3) Whenthe glue hasset.trim offthe excesstoothpicklenglh. You maycut the toothpickwith diagonalcutters.but leave at leastl/16" stickingup. If voucut toocloseto the surface. thetoothpickwill crushandsplitdowninto the hole. Trim the restof thetoothpickandexcessglueuith a sharpchiselor a singleedgedrazorblade.You mavsandthe nut shelfareaverylightll'gith fine grit sandpaper backedb1 a small.flat sandingblock. Be carefulnot to sandthroughthefinish. The shelfmustbe flat n'ith no rollededges. -t) PlacetheFenderL.S.R.rollernut on the nut shelfto markthe neu mountingholes.Orientthe nut u'ith the mounting holestouardthepeghead.The solidmetalsideof the nut shouldbeplacedagainstthefretboard.Whilepressingthe nut against centerthe nut sothatit is evenon bothsidesof theneck. Mark the locationof the mountingholesthroughtheholes thefretboard. in the nut usinga drill bit or a sharpawl. 5) Nou. removethenut anddrill theneu'mountingholesusinga #51 (.067")drill bit. Drlll .275"- .300' into thenut shelfsurface.You mustuseonlv the#51drill bit or the mountingscrewsr.rill breakrl henvoutightenthem. 6) Placetheblackplasticbezelon the nut shelfareaandinse( the rollernut on top ofthe plasticlip. Pressthebezeland the rollernut forwardagainstthefretboardandinstallthe screu'susinga #0 phillipsscrewdriver. Useonl)'a #0 phillipso11ouu.ill stripthescreuhead.Tightensnugll'.but do not over-tighten. 7) Re-stringtheguitarandtestthe nut height.Thereshouldbe an .018"to .02()"gapbetu,een thebottomof eachstringand thisheightrviththestainless thetopof thefirstfret You ma1'adjust steelshimsprorided.You shouldhavereceived four (X)-5" shimsandfour.0l0" shims. You mar'\\'ant to cut in touards the centerfrom each side to avoid having the cutter break through the edge 3) Placethe FenderL.S.R roller nut in the slot to mark the ne\\.mountingholes Orient the nut uith the mountingholes touard the peg head. The solid metal side of the nut shouldbe placedagainstthe fretboard While pressingthe nut againstthe fretboard.centerthe nut so that it is even on both sidesof the neck. Mark the location of the mounting holesthrough the holes in the nut using a drill bit or a sharp anl. , l ) N o u . r e m o v e t h e n u t a n d d r i l l t h e n em u o u n t i n g h o l e s u s i n g a #I 5( 0 6 7 " ) d r i l l b i t . Useonl)'a #0 phillips or rou u'ill strip the screu head. Tighten snuglt. but do not over-tighten. 6) Re-stringthe guitar and test the nut height. There shouldbe an .018" to .()20"gap betu'eenthe bottom of eachstring and the top of the first fret. You mav adjustthis height with the stainlesssteelshims provided. You should have receivedfour.005" shims and four.()l0" shims. The shims slide in from the sides.round end first. under the roller nut. The orientationof the shim is sholvnabove. Insert the shims neededfor each side of the nut and re-tightenthe mounting screws.
