On October 14th, 1977, the original trustees of the DeepPortage Conservation Reserve wrote a proclamation outlining their hopes and intentions for the future of the organization. In part, the proclamation stated: “We hope visitors find pleasure in study here as they have fun outdoors. We believe you will have found efficient ways to capture the energy of wood, wind, and sunshine. We hope this reserve has become a model of man’s careful adaptation to nature, that these resources are fruitful blessings to you and the generations for whom you, in your turn are preparing.” Driveway Construction 1977 Today, 40 years after the founding of Deep Portage, we feel proud of our roots and secure in the fulfillment and continuation of this original mission. Over 250,000 students and visitors have studied and enjoyed this beautiful landscape and stayed in our top-notch facilities. Thanks to our wind, solar, and biomass power installations our campus is now carbon neutral, and serving as a demonstration site for alternative energy and the careful use of natural resources. Early Tour of Deep Portage All of us at Deep Portage thank the many participants, donors, volunteers, staff, and leaders who have made the program a success. The future is bright, and as always we believe our best days are still ahead!
