Speech given by new homeowner Tavo Salazar at
his Home Dedication Ceremony March 3, 2012:

and work toward owning a home.
“Thank you Habitat for Humanity Central
Arizona with sincere appreciation!
Words cannot express the heartfelt gratitude I
feel for all the tremendous support provided by
Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona and my
Home Sponsor Lutherans Building for Christ
Coalition, my Family Partners Jerry & Ruth
Ann Thacker, my House Leaders Doug Busch
and Team Leaders Roy Sikorski, Brandon
Smith, Steve Cramer, Mike Wilkins, Mike Burke,
Ken Ondrejko, Jim Krause, Bob Blome and
Chuck Long. I wouldn’t have been able to do
this without your great expertise and sincere
dedication to my home that you built as if it was

my family, my dad, my brother and his family and
my dearest friend Rebecca, plus all the great and
wonderful volunteers that gave up their Saturdays
to help me and the many people who volunteered
during the week who were not seen but have not

I would like to take this time to give thanks to
God and to all that have made this dream of mine
a reality.
I came to this country looking for the American
dream. I had my degrees in Agriculture and
bio-fertilization of horticultures and I thought
“No problem! I’ll come and make my fortune,
buy a home, get married and have a family.”
Unfortunately my degrees were not transferable
to jobs in the United States and finding a job
was difficult so in order to survive I took any
position I could find. I found a great job with
good pay as a machinist, but was laid off. I found
another job as a house manager and was laid off
again. It was a sign of the times and I had just
about given up hope.
Despite my struggles I started volunteering
with the City of Phoenix doing cleanups in my
community and started attending and completed
citizenship classes. I took a steady job as a prep
cook but knew that despite my best efforts I could
never afford a home on my salary. My dream of
home ownership seemed unattainable. I asked
God to help me and he did. My prayers were
quickly answered when I was told of the great

formed in 2003 in an effort

to involve more churches and serve more families. Spearheading
the formation of the coalition were Laura Brandt, Don Swenson and
another member from Desert Palms. Through their commitment
and steadfastness the coalition was formed, and the first Chair, Pat
Johnson of Desert Palms Presbyterian Church was selected.
To date the Coalition has sponsored eight homes, serving as many
families and 31 children in the local community. These families now
have affordable, stable housing thanks to the partnership and support
of the West Valley Presbyterian Coalition. This year the coalition is
co-sponsoring their ninth home in Glendale in partnership with the
Yasin/Badru Family, a family of six.
The West Valley Presbyterian Coalition’s contribution to Habitat
for Humanity Central Arizona and the families in our community is
tremendous. Habitat is thankful for their partnership and support.

The Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona family lost a great friend this
winter with the passing of one of our long-time volunteers, Jim Partida. Jim
passed away on January 25th at the age of 75. Jeanne, his loving wife of 28
years, was at his side.
Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona builds,
renovates and repairs simple, decent and affordable
homes in partnership with families in need.
As an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit affiliate of
Habitat for Humanity International, we build, renovate
and repair affordable housing for low-income families
in need of adequate shelter. We feel that optimism,
respect, teamwork, customer service, appreciation
and, of course, humor and fun are valuable and
necessary attributes that guide our actions so that we
can accomplish our goals.
Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona is one of the
largest producing urban affiliates in the United States.
We have grown from an organization that struggled
to fund one house in 1985 to building, renovating or
repairing more than 825 homes to date.
There are many ways to join the effort to eliminate
poverty housing in the Metro Phoenix area. Please

Jim and Jeanne’s devotion to Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona goes
back 13 years, back to the days of the Habitat for Humanity East Valley
affiliate. After the merger with Habitat for Humanity Valley of the Sun, Jim
not only continued to swing a hammer on-site, but the husband and wife duo
became mainstays on the Family Selection and Family Partner committees.
Jim served as both an elder and deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Mesa.
He was able to combine his passions for the church and Habitat for the
greatest good. Through his guidance the Presbytery
donated 25 lots to Habitat. Jim, a member of
the U.S. Air Force Reserve in the 1950’s and
‘60s, also volunteered for the Mesa Police
Department’s Victim’s Abuse Unit. During
his free time, Jim enjoyed reading and he
read the Bible every day. He also focused
on history and the military.

What a Year...What a Community
New Homeowners
What a year it is turning out to be! It’s with immense pride that I announce by our
June 30th fiscal year end, HFHCAZ will have served more than 300 families. That
places us a full two years ahead of our 2014 Strategic Plan goal of serving more than
100 families per year.
HFHCAZ continues to build new LEED certification-seeking homes while growing
our number of renovated homes. We are rewarded that our home renovation
program is earning accolades from our municipal partners. We’ve earned praise
and appreciation for the impact we are making in neighborhoods in most need of
revitalization. And that speaks not only to the improvements made to the actual
homes, but also to the character of the hard-working families we are selling to. In
many cases, those hard-working families are buying newly renovated homes which were once vacant,
foreclosed properties where criminal activity pushed the neighborhood into decline. Our families,
our neighborhoods and our cities benefit by the immediate reduction in neighborhood crime and the
improvement in home values.

Program, Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) and Neighborhood Stabilization Program
(NSP). Our municipal partners have identified HFHCAZ as the non-profit partner who can manage
and deliver desired revitalization results! That is why we have been awarded traditional CDBG and
HOME grants and have been awarded some of their NSP grant funding. HFHCAZ is also exceeding
all expectations surrounding the newly launched Emergency Home Repair program for the City of
Glendale.

and individual donors continue to be challenged with the effect of high unemployment, we know their

We will embrace what will probably be our most challenging year in terms of the number of new homes
constructed and homes renovated. We will not rest on our laurels. With the need to pick up the pace
for completion of our HUD-funded projects, we won’t have much of a summer break. And once again
we can proudly announce that we are challenged and we are blessed. Thank you all for your continued

We continue to make progress with our new home repair program. The bulk of the year has been spent
creating the legal documents and developing the processes needed to offer the program to existing
homeowners meeting the selection criteria for HFH families. But we will proceed slowly with this
new endeavor because we also face a newly identified swell of new home construction and home
renovation activity. We will be very busy complying with recently announced and revised time lines
for completion of projects funded in part with federal grant dollars administered by the Department of
Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

What a Year...What a Community
New Homeowners
What a year it is turning out to be! It’s with immense pride that I announce by our
June 30th fiscal year end, HFHCAZ will have served more than 300 families. That
places us a full two years ahead of our 2014 Strategic Plan goal of serving more than
100 families per year.
HFHCAZ continues to build new LEED certification-seeking homes while growing
our number of renovated homes. We are rewarded that our home renovation
program is earning accolades from our municipal partners. We’ve earned praise
and appreciation for the impact we are making in neighborhoods in most need of
revitalization. And that speaks not only to the improvements made to the actual
homes, but also to the character of the hard-working families we are selling to. In
many cases, those hard-working families are buying newly renovated homes which were once vacant,
foreclosed properties where criminal activity pushed the neighborhood into decline. Our families,
our neighborhoods and our cities benefit by the immediate reduction in neighborhood crime and the
improvement in home values.

Through partnerships with municipalities, we received funding from the HOME Investment Partnership
Program, Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) and Neighborhood Stabilization Program
(NSP). Our municipal partners have identified HFHCAZ as the non-profit partner who can manage
and deliver desired revitalization results! That is why we have been awarded traditional CDBG and
HOME grants and have been awarded some of their NSP grant funding. HFHCAZ is also exceeding
all expectations surrounding the newly launched Emergency Home Repair program for the City of
Glendale.

Funding for the Habitat mission is now trending in the right direction. We have seen corporate
sponsorships begin to grow this year as the economy continues its slow recovery. While our faith-based
and individual donors continue to be challenged with the effect of high unemployment, we know their
support will improve as the employment picture brightens.
We will embrace what will probably be our most challenging year in terms of the number of new homes
constructed and homes renovated. We will not rest on our laurels. With the need to pick up the pace
for completion of our HUD-funded projects, we won’t have much of a summer break. And once again

Words cannot express the heartfelt gratitude I
feel for all the tremendous support provided by

I came to this country looking for the American
dream. I had my degrees in Agriculture and
bio-fertilization of horticultures and I thought
“No problem! I’ll come and make my fortune,
buy a home, get married and have a family.”
Unfortunately my degrees were not transferable
to jobs in the United States and finding a job
was difficult so in order to survive I took any
position I could find. I found a great job with
good pay as a machinist, but was laid off. I found
another job as a house manager and was laid off
again. It was a sign of the times and I had just
about given up hope.
Despite my struggles I started volunteering
with the City of Phoenix doing cleanups in my
community and started attending and completed
citizenship classes. I took a steady job as a prep
cook but knew that despite my best efforts I could
never afford a home on my salary. My dream of
home ownership seemed unattainable. I asked
God to help me and he did. My prayers were
quickly answered when I was told of the great

and steadfastness the coalition was formed, and the first Chair, Pat

To date the Coalition has sponsored eight homes, serving as many
families and 31 children in the local community. These families now
have affordable, stable housing thanks to the partnership and support
of the West Valley Presbyterian Coalition. This year the coalition is
co-sponsoring their ninth home in Glendale in partnership with the
Yasin/Badru Family, a family of six.
The West Valley Presbyterian Coalition’s contribution to Habitat
for Humanity Central Arizona and the families in our community is

Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona builds,
renovates and repairs simple, decent and affordable
homes in partnership with families in need.
As an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit affiliate of
Habitat for Humanity International, we build, renovate
and repair affordable housing for low-income families
in need of adequate shelter. We feel that optimism,
respect, teamwork, customer service, appreciation
and, of course, humor and fun are valuable and
necessary attributes that guide our actions so that we
can accomplish our goals.
Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona is one of the
largest producing urban affiliates in the United States.
We have grown from an organization that struggled
to fund one house in 1985 to building, renovating or
repairing more than 825 homes to date.

poverty housing in the Metro Phoenix area. Please

Jim and Jeanne’s devotion to Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona goes back 13
years, back to the days of the Habitat for Humanity East Valley affiliate. After the
merger with Habitat for Humanity Valley of the Sun, Jim not only continued to swing
a hammer on-site, but the husband and wife duo became mainstays on the Family
Selection and Family Partner committees.
Jim served as both an elder and deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Mesa. He
was able to combine his passions for the church and Habitat for the greatest good.
Through his guidance the Presbytery donated 25 lots
to Habitat. Jim, a member of the U.S. Air
Force Reserve in the 1950s and ‘60s,
also volunteered for the Mesa Police
Department’s Victims’ Abuse
Unit. During his free time, Jim
enjoyed reading and he read
the Bible every day. He
also focused on history
and the military.

The Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona family lost a great friend this
winter with the passing of one of our long-time volunteers, Jim Partida. Jim
passed away on January 25th at the age of 75. Jeanne, his loving wife of 28
years, was at his side.
Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona builds,
renovates and repairs simple, decent and affordable
homes in partnership with families in need.
As an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit affiliate of
Habitat for Humanity International, we build, renovate
and repair affordable housing for low-income families
in need of adequate shelter. We feel that optimism,
respect, teamwork, customer service, appreciation
and, of course, humor and fun are valuable and
necessary attributes that guide our actions so that we
can accomplish our goals.
Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona is one of the
largest producing urban affiliates in the United States.
We have grown from an organization that struggled
to fund one house in 1985 to building, renovating or
repairing more than 825 homes to date.

poverty housing in the Metro Phoenix area. Please

Jim and Jeanne’s devotion to Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona goes
back 13 years, back to the days of the Habitat for Humanity East Valley
affiliate. After the merger with Habitat for Humanity Valley of the Sun, Jim
not only continued to swing a hammer on-site, but the husband and wife duo
became mainstays on the Family Selection and Family Partner committees.
Jim served as both an elder and deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Mesa.
He was able to combine his passions for the church and Habitat for the
greatest good. Through his guidance the Presbytery
donated 25 lots to Habitat. Jim, a member of
the U.S. Air Force Reserve in the 1950s and
‘60s, also volunteered for the Mesa Police
Department’s Victims’ Abuse Unit. During
his free time, Jim enjoyed reading and he
read the Bible every day. He also focused
on history and the military.
Jim is survived by Jeanne, daughter
and son-in-law Cheryl and Ed Cordone
and their children Matthew and Andrew,
daughter and son-in-law Julie and Bob
Dobrin and their children Zach and Lily,
sons Eric and Alan and sister and
brother-in-law
Armida and Cliff
Brashear.
