The first recipient of the Foundation’s Community Outreach Award Sponsors as of 03/25/11 Inside This Issue: Guest Ambassador Program Celebrates One Year Grant Supports Expansion of Translation Services Foundation Donates $500,000 to Kingston Hospital Emergency Department Expansion The HealthAlliance Cardiology Department From the Desk of David W. Lundquist, President and CEO: HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley® (HAHV) was created in March 2009, which now includes the Kingston and Benedictine Hospitals, along with the Margaretville Hospital, Mountainside Residential Care Center and Woodland Pond at New Paltz. The Alliance would not have been possible without the extraordinary courage, support, and leadership of the HAHV Board of Directors, an exceptionally qualified medical staff and nurses, and the commitment and dedication of the entire hospital team. As we celebrate our second anniversary and reflect on progress made during the first two years, we have successfully streamlined operations with significant cost reduction, eliminated service duplication, and improved the community's overall quality of care. Thanks to the HEAL funding, we consolidated our services and nursing units and completed 15 construction projects, the most significant of which was the consolidation of Emergency Services into the Kingston Hospital Emergency Services. It features the only accredited Chest Pain Center in the Hudson Valley, along with a certified Stroke Center, a 64-Slice CT scanner, and a Fast Track Unit to speed up wait times for patients with minor ailments. Our planned growth will be a boon to our quality and access. We are committed to the implementation of the Electronic Health Record information system as mandated by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical (HITEC) Act in 2009. We also have some exciting program enhancements happening this year at Benedictine Hospital. A new Infusion Therapy Center, Pre-Surgical Testing Area (PST) and a state-of-the-art, consolidated Center for Breast Health are being constructed with support from the Benedictine Health Foundation. On the Kingston Hospital campus, planning has been underway to introduce Interventional Cardiology services to the newly consolidated and upgraded Emergency Department and ICU. For example, some heart attack patients in Ulster County currently have to travel out of the area for a life-saving Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). This will provide better patient outcomes and bolster our accredited Chest Pain Center, one of nine in the entire state. This new service will be funded by a capital campaign by The Kingston Hospital Foundation. As we are challenged with continually shrinking reimbursement, the strength of our respective hospital foundations will play an even greater role with our success. We are fortunate to have exceptionally strong hospital foundations that have generously supported each of the hospitals over the years. We extend our deepest appreciation for your generosity. And should you need our help in the future, we will be there as your partner in health. The HealthAlliance Cardiology Department T he HealthAlliance Cardiology Department provides a full range of inpatient and outpatient cardiac services, from diagnostic testing and treatments to cardiac rehabilitation. From our From our The Foundation has been serving The Kingston Hospital for 29 years. During the past ten years, The Foundation has distributed over $5 million for improved hospital facilities, technology and services. Thank you to all those who have supported The Kingston Hospital Foundation mission. During the past ten years, major hospital improvements supported by capital campaigns have focused on the women’s health center, the new ED, expanded ICU, new dialysis center on Albany Avenue, and the family birth place. The Foundation board of directors and staff are looking forward to the Hospitals’ next major initiative which will focus on expanding the Health Alliance cardiac care services. The Foundation campaign committee will be communicating information on the expanded cardiology services and the fund-raising needs for the project. This major project will be taking place during the second half of this year and we will keep you updated on its progress. As I enter my 12th year as Executive Director, I look forward to working with the Foundation board, community leaders, business owners, HealthAlliance employees, physicians and volunteers on achieving our fund-raising goals for 2011. Your partnership in creating quality healthcare programs and services in Ulster County and the surrounding communities is greatly appreciated. As chair of The Kingston Hospital Foundation, I would like to thank the community— individuals, businesses, hospital staff and physicians—for their support of the 2010 annual fund which raised over $115,000 for the wound care, diabetes and dialysis centers—all vital services for our friends and their families. I am pleased to be associated with The Kingston Hospital Foundation and proud to support its mission. The Foundation was established to raise funds in support of the hospital. Its purpose is to obtain charitable contributions, manage those gifts and disburse them. The Foundation board of directors provides leadership and guidance to the Foundation and is comprised of members from the community. As chair of the board, I will ensure our development efforts remain focused on raising funds through community campaigns, special events, direct mail solicitations, planned giving programs, bequests and memorial donations. This support provides the resources necessary for The Kingston Hospital to provide state-of-the-art technology to enhance patient care, offer new programs and services, and undertake building expansions and renovations. Executive Director Chairman Sincere regards, Steffen T. Kraehmer, CFRE Executive Director, The Kingston Hospital Foundation Thank you for your continued support of The Kingston Hospital Foundation, Richard A. Mantey Chairman, The Kingston Hospital Foundation 3 Grant Supports Expansion of Translation Services T he Kingston Hospital Foundation Board of Directors would like to thank the Dyson Foundation for a multi-year grant to expand the translation services at the HealthAlliance hospitals. Committee members assisting in the implementation of the new translation services program include (L to R): Standing: Steffen Kraehmer, Foundation Executive Director; Joseph Marsicovete, HealthAlliance Chief Quality Officer Sitting: Dawn Greer, HealthAlliance Language Assistance Program Coordinator; Sr. Gabrielle Keenen, OSB, Director of Quality and Performance Improvement The Dyson Foundation, founded by Charles and Margaret Dyson in 1957, works toward improving people’s lives through grant funding, promoting philanthropy, and strengthening the capacity of nonprofit organizations. The Dyson Foundation’s current grant making includes a significant grants program in the Mid-Hudson Valley of New York State that seeks to improve the quality of life in the region, create opportunities and support for economically disadvantaged individuals and families, and strengthen the nonprofit sector. HealthAlliance of the Hudson Valley is pleased to announce it has retained the healthcare translation services of Cyracom, LLC. Patients can now be connected to a trained medical interpreter in 15 seconds or less, who will then conduct a conversation between them and a healthcare provider. If a patient has a medical document in another language, it can be electronically submitted to Cyracom for translation. The service is provided free of charge. D y s o n The Family Birth Place Committee has initiated a new Tree of Life donor program that provides an opportunity to celebrate each new birth or multiple generations of babies born at both Benedictine and Kingston Hospitals. This Tree of Life and Family For additional information, call The Kingston Hospital Legacy Plaque is located on the Foundation at 334-2760. donor wall in the entranceway of The Family Birth Place (as well as a second display in the ED north hallway.) It displays beautiful leaves of silver and gold, donated by proud parents, family members and friends. We are hoping you will consider supporting our effort to recognize families who have experienced the birth of their children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren at the Benedictine and Kingston Hospitals, by adding your family name to either the Family Legacy Panel or a Gold Leaf to the Tree of Life. Your donation will help The Family Birth Place continue to provide quality educational programs, such as our parent support group and educational videos, as well as continuing education for our caring and compassionate nurses. F o u n d a t i o n Cyracom’s translation phone system 4 The Family Birth Place’s New ‘Tree of Life’ Donor Program To find the full-sized version of The Tree of Life and donor panels, visit The Family Birth Place located on the Fourth Floor. Foundation Donates $500,000 to Kingston Hospital Emergency Department Expansion T he new Kingston Hospital Emergency Room has been receiving patients for a few months now, and already the 8,000-foot expansion—nearly triple the former space—is making a difference in the quality of care and the efficiency of service patients are receiving. We’d like to share two stories with our donors from recent Emergency Department patients: Mary & Emily: This past summer, Emily suffered from a fairly bad stomach virus. When it didn’t pass on its own and she couldn’t get any liquids down, Emily became very dehydrated. Her mother, Mary, brought her into the Kingston Hospital ED after a recommendation from the family physician. At this point, Emily was very weak and not in a good state. When they arrived in the ED at 4:30 in the afternoon, the room was very busy, and the general expectation of ‘we’re going to be waiting forever’ took hold. Fortunately, their experience was exactly the opposite. They were immediately taken through triage, assessed, and Emily began receiving treatment just as quickly. Staff was professional and compassionate, and the ER Tech was especially reassuring and comforting—to both Emily and Mary. Said Mary, afterward, “I would recommend The Kingston Hospital to anyone.” Advanced Care The new Emergency Department improvements have advanced our care and service by leaps and bounds. With the latest in technology, board-certified emergency physicians available 24/7, faster admission procedures and 30-minutes or under wait times, The Kingston Hospital ED is more efficient and effective than ever. Frank & Michelle: ”If it wasn’t for the staff at the Kingston Emergency Department, my husband wouldn’t be here today.” Very early one morning, Frank woke Michelle and said, ‘I think I need to go to the hospital.’ What they found out later was Frank’s kidneys had failed and, because they weren’t working, his body was poisoning itself. There is very little time to react with kidney failure. When they got to the Emergency Room, staff triaged him and brought Frank into a bed immediately, where he suddenly flat-lined and had to be resuscitated and ventilated. “It’s not very often that someone gets a second chance at life,” Michelle recounts. “If it wasn't for the staff at the Kingston Emergency Department, my husband wouldn’t be here today.” To Our Donors We would like to thank you for your continued support of The Kingston Hospital Foundation. This is just one of the many ways your gift helps us make a real difference. Larios September 29, 1926 to February 26, 2011 Chris served on the Board of Trustees from 1965 through 1985. In 1966, he chaired the Building Committee during the construction of the Broadway wing. Chris advocated for the Hospital to remain in the City of Kingston and helped create a master plan for many of the campus improvements that followed. In 1984, Chris served as chairman of the Second Century Campaign, raising over one and a half million dollars for the construction of the West Wing, which opened in 1986. He was named trustee emeritus of the Hospital in 1987 and was the first honoree of the Hospital Tulip Ball in 1990. In addition, the Center offers a 4-class series designed to cover the different aspects of the disease and to provide participants the knowledge and lifestyle management skills that will help them live healthy lives, free of additional complications. Kingston Hospital's Diabetes Education Center has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association for offering quality self-management diabetes education and meeting its high educational standards. “The support group is very helpful. It reminds me to keep on track with portion control. Thanks to the staff, each time I learn new ideas to help me.” – Evelyn Ness The Wound Healing Center: Located in the Medical Arts Building, the Center offers both inpatients and outpatients a path to recovery with a comprehensive approach to healing the wound and the cause from a specialized team of health professionals accredited in wound care management. A complete spectrum of healing treatments are available to the patient, including a Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber, located in The Kingston Hospital, adjacent to the Center. This non-surgical, non-invasive healing therapy stimulates cell growth and healthy tissue through the inhalation of pure oxygen. “I was fortunate to learn about the Wound Healing Center...I was a regular visitor to the Center for nearly two months while they worked on healing my wound. I am truly grateful for the health care I received.” – William Marx The Dialysis Center: Nationwide, nearly 24 million people age 20 and older have developed Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)—about 14 percent of the population. When the progression of CKD leads to End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or kidney failure, the only options available for survival are transplants or dialysis. The Kingston Hospital Dialysis Center maintains 30 hemodialysis stations, comprehensive nephrology care, and a full staff of dietary, educational, clinical, technical, and psychosocial consult support staff for both inpatient and outpatient services. The Dialysis Center is an essential, life-sustaining health service that changes lives. Note: Your financial support offers lifechanging health services to hundreds of patients and families annually. The Foundation is grateful to all individuals and businesses that focus on the health needs of Ulster County and surrounding communities. 7 Guest Ambassador Program Celebrates One Year I n July of 2009, four HealthAlliance Employees had the passion to make patients more comfortable while staying at our hospitals.
