Good News - Channahon United Methodist Church
Our mission is to create disciples who nourish faith and work in ministering to the community. The Circuit Rider MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF CHANNAHON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH VOLUME 58, NO. 11, DECEMBER 2012 Upcoming Events 12.2 Confirmation Begins 12.9 Children’s Christmas Program 12.23 1 Service 9:00am Adult & Children’s Cantata 12.24 Christmas Eve Services 4:00pm, 6:30pm & 11:00pm Good News Reverend Steve Good I have a shameful Christmas memory. Like many other young children, I had been anticipating Christmas morning for many weeks. I had carefully researched and articulated my wish list for presents. I could imagine tearing open enough gifts to create a small mountain of ripped wrapping paper. After going to Christmas Eve worship, my parents had tucked my sister and I into our beds, although sleep didn’t come easily. Finally the next morning, once our parents were up, we raced into the living room to find our long awaited Christmas presents. Maybe it was the lack of sleep. Maybe it was coming off the sugar-high from all the holiday treats I had been eating. And maybe I was just plain greedy. For whatever reason, after all the presents were opened, I panicked when I realized it was over. That was all I was getting. But my pile of loot just didn’t seem big enough, and I had a Christmas breakdown. As the tears flowed, my parents tried to console/understand me. All I knew was that there should have been more presents Continued on page 2... One Service Good News Continued … December 23 // 9am only under the tree with the name “Steve” on the tag. Join us December 23 at 9:00am for CUMC’s Christmas Cantata which will be geared around the children this year with the help of the adult choir. “The First Christmas” is a family friendly version of our Saviors birth. There will be fun tunes with some familiar carols to make it an enjoyable experience. The fact is, I got plenty of presents, but there was no way they could match my expectations builtup from television commercials, magazine ads, and store window displays where I left smudge marks from my face. Author Mike Slaughter notes that many Christians celebrate Christmas like it’s their birthday, not Jesus’. “Christmas has been hijacked and exploited . . . we celebrate Jesus’ birth with an orgy of materialism.” In our church’s Advent study, he goes on to say that “we’ve all grown up with a distorted, acculturated picture of a feel-good Santa Claus Jesus, which has insulated us from God’s heart concerning injustice and suffering in the world.” I hope to see you all there as we tell you the story of Jesus’ birth thru the eyes of the children this Christmas. Also, we are looking for singers, speakers, etc of all ages. If you are interested please contact Brittany Alcantar at balcantar05@yahoo.com. Please note there will not be a 10:30am service. The point is, Christmas is the birthday of Christ, so let’s celebrate all of what Jesus stands for: the ultimate expression of God’s extreme love for us. Divinity squeezed into human flesh to experience the same joys, temptations, and sufferings that we do. A savior from on high who was born in lowly circumstances. A child born in a manger, who grew up confronting injustice and indifference, and who was killed on a cross for his troubles. Christmas Eve Worship Schedule All are warmly invited to join us to celebrate the birth of Christ on Monday, December 24th at Channahon UMC. All services will feature special music, a Christmas story from Pastor Steve, and candle lighting. May we experience our Christmas celebrations with simple joy, leaving the materialistic excesses of the season to find another home, for in so doing, we will rediscover whose birthday it is after all. Our Christmas Eve Worship choices are: 4:00 pm Candle Light Service Special Music CUMC Praise Band Peace, Pastor Steve 6:30 pm Candle Light Service Special Music CUMC Adult Choir . 11:00 pm Candle Light Service Special Music Clay & Allison Novak Come celebrate the incarnation with us!. . . Price is $12.50 a bucket (50 cents off if you bring your bucket from last year). All proceeds go to support mission. As we come to the end of the year we are thankful for another very successful year. Do we mean we made money and were able to pay the church insurance? Yes we did accomplish that but our true success is measured by the smiles and sometimes tears on the faces of those in need that we were able to help. Special thanks to Lana Stafford & Pastor Steve who planned our Thank Offering Service on November 18. Thanks to all who participated and donated to UMW Thank Offering. At this time we received $661.00. At the end of 2012 we will divide our monies between Marcy Newberry Center, The Pillow Ministry, & A Love Gift to the Conference. Cookbooks are still available in the Narthex for $10 and all wrapped up for gift giving. We had 4 members attend the Conference meeting in Rockford on October 27. There is updated circle information in the narthex for any woman looking for a circle to attend. Char Musser CUMW President Just a reminder that after our Ten Cent Sales on Thursday, Dec. 13th and Monday, Dec. 17th we will be on break until Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013. We will be hosting our Christmas / Appreciation Luncheon on Friday, Dec. 7th at noon in the church narthex for all the wonderful guys and gals who have helped us throughout this past year and a few special guests. To all of our customers, to the community and to our church family we wish you a Merry and Blessed Christmas filled with lots of love and happiness of family and friends and a Healthy Happy New Year filled with all of God's blessings. Sandy Fodero Chairman / Treasurer Ladies Aid / Thrift Shop 3 On November 11, Consecration Sunday, 77 households gave their Estimate of Giving for their 2013 giving to Channahon United Methodist Church. These 77 households committed to a total of $ 166,740. Other individuals and families will be responding in the coming weeks (we are mailing out blank Estimate of Giving cards for those who weren't able to attend worship on Nov. 11. You can also pick one up from the church office). Thank you to those who responded with their Estimate of Giving as a joyful act of faith in their spiritual journey. Thank you to Financial Secretary Vickie Breen for her report, and to Mark Lindstrom and his Finance Team for all their help. Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14 I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Marvelous are Your works, And that my soul knows very well. Celebrating Christmas “A Different Kind of Christmas” Living & Giving Like Jesus Witness Team wants to invite you to participate in the magic and memorable time that is Christmas. During Advent there is waiting and high anticipation of the birth of Christ. We will have celebrating not only the Sunday before Christmas with the children and choir but on Christmas Eve as well. An Adult Advent Experience Plan on attending any one of three Christmas Eve services that will be offered on Dec. 24 (See article on page 2). Each one will have a candlelight service. All three services will be family friendly. In addition consider asking a friend or neighbor to join you. Christmas is often a time when folks will say yes even if they've said no in the past. Be excited for Christmas and mark your calendar. Come and enjoy what can be life changing. After all it's the very reason Jesus came to earth in the first place. Cost: $12 to cover the cost of your book. Time together will include prayer, bible study, a video presentation, and group discussion. It’s not too late to be a part of an Adult Advent experience based on Michael Slaughter’s book: Christmas Is Not Your Birthday. “This study will empower your family and your church to reclaim the broader missional meaning of Jesus’ birth and experience a Christmas season with more peace and joy than any toy or gadget could ever bring.” It is not too late to attend if you would like to join in on one of the studies. The reunion runs from Friday evening through Saturday at 3 p.m. Watch your mailbox for info being sent directly to you from NIC camp. 6 Kidz Club We have finished our study on the Creation Story, and explored it in many wonderful ways which helped us learn the awesomeness of God. (Maybe you saw some of our work on the wall outside of the choir room.) The nickels the kids collected throughout the study were donated to Feed My Starving Children. We have begun our study of Isaiah, a prophet from the Old Testament who told the people of Israel about the coming of a Messiah. This study teaches about hope & God’s kept promises. Our group is open to all 1st -5th graders. Wednesday nights from 6-7:30pm. We hope you can join us on Michelle & Barb BAKERS NEEDED! UMW needs your help. Please consider contributing your favorite homemade cookies. See Barb Powell to volunteer! Wednesday Night Youth After Thanksgiving we will be meeting from 6-8:00pm. In the past year, we have gone from two small groups of about 8-10 Youth & two adult volunteers into a large group of 20+ Youth & 5+ volunteers. How great is that!!! However, in the process we have lost that small group atmosphere. By extending our meeting time, it is our hope that we can spend some of the time as a large group & some in smaller groups to once again create that small group atmosphere. Madison Leatherwood has joined as another leader. Madison is a senior at Minooka High School and is very excited to be involved with the Youth and we are very blessed to have her. Mary, Tom, Kellen, Madison & Nancy Psalm 136:1 “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.” 8th Annual Channahon UMW COOKIE WALK Saturday, December 15, 2012 9 a.m. until cookies are gone! Channahon United Methodist Church 24751 W. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” Each of the last few years, CUMC has sent a group of people to Jonestown, Mississippi to help build a house with the local Habitat for Humanity chapter. It is a week of learning, sharing, and growing. Jonestown is a small town about 70 miles southwest of Memphis, TN. In 1999, the median family income for a Jonestown family was $18,958. Our trip is timed to coincide with Minooka Community High School’s spring break. We will leave early on Sunday, March 24th and return on the evening of Saturday, March 30th. Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!” So far 6 people have filled out a short information form. Several other have expressed an interest in going. The next Jonestown Mission trip meeting will be January 6th at 11:30 am. By the January meeting, the church will have determined how much each adult and youth going on the mission trip will be subsidized (approximately $150.) The $50 deposit will be due. The total cost of the trip is estimated to be $300 – $350. Addition money may be available for financial hardship cases. Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I have never slept with a man.” The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God.” A 2nd meeting will be February 17 at 11:30am. One of the topics will be food. How many meals will we cook, and who is bringing what? A 3rd meeting will be March 3rd. Habitat for Humanity waivers and medical forms will need to be filled out at this time. Nationally, Habitat for Humanity has adopted new safety rules which require anyone on the construction site to be at least 16 years old. Although youth younger than 16 can go on the trip, they will work on alternate projects at another site which may make logistics difficult. Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel If you have any questions, please contact Wilson Young at 815-467-2802 or awyoung81@comcast.net. Continued on page 9... 8 Thank You… Youth News … I would like to thank the Channahon Methodist Church, for the most appreciated gift – the Prayer Blanket. It is a warm, cuddly companion, a smile producer, and best of all a giver of encouragement and hope. Thank you so much for thinking of me! With most sincere thanks. Sandi Kalchbrenner (Kris Mondrella’s mother) left her. Luke 1:26-38, CEV I can’t imagine what Mary must have felt when Gabriel told her she would be the mother of Jesus. Mary found herself in circumstances she could not explain. The social implications of her pregnancy were overwhelming! Part of me likes to think that Mary didn’t accept Gabriel’s message as easily as Luke makes it sound. She probably freaked out a little. I imagine she may have argued with Gabriel. She may have shouted, “God, how could you do this to me!?” Thanks for the prayers, cards, & visits after my foot surgery. Thanks for Joan Waller who watched over Regan during the Turkey Supper. I am so blessed to be part of a loving & caring church. Mary Caher People often describe Mary as being onedimensional – she is quiet, meek, and submissive. However, I think she is a powerful character who gives us a great example. One thing that strikes me about Mary is the way she responded to this shocking news after she realized it really was going to happen. Mary chose to glorify God for the gift of her child. I like to think Mary’s serene response to Gabriel indicate deep strength, rather than simple submission. Mary’s finally responded with grace, determination and joy. Thanks to Pastor Steve for his visits during Sonny’s surgery, and the wonderful friends at CUMC for all the prayers & visits. Sharon Hedgren Thank you for your prayers & good wishes while we were sick at my house. Thank you, also, for those who filled in for me in worship & Sunday school. It truly is a joy to be part of such a caring congregation. Roger Beitzel Mary’s response is a powerful example of faith. Often, like Mary, we find ourselves in circumstances we did not choose – and really don’t like. How we choose to react to difficult situations can give a powerful witness to the world. Thank you to everyone in my church family for being so supportive of me through my recent health issue. Praise God that all is well and tests all came back clear. Bonnie Babich An attitude of grace, determination and joy in the face of difficulty does not come easily — it comes from unwavering faith in God, and it must be practiced. Praise the Lord for a successful surgery – all the great friends at CUMC that sent prayers, cards, calls, visits & treats & for WONDERFUL FRIENDS! Mary is also gives us a great example of patience. Advent is a time of waiting as we prepare ourselves to once more receive the Christ-child in our midst. Mary, perhaps more than anyone, knows what it means to wait. She spent nine months anticipating the birth of Jesus. Like Mary, we wait for clear understanding in our difficult situations and anticipate the hope and joy that Jesus brings to our lives. Sonny Hedgren Did You Know… the Scouts have done an amazing job with the "Scouting for Food" campaign? They distributed grocery bags one week and came back to collect them the following week. Thank you for taking care of those in need. Peace to you as you wait, Roger 9 Channahon United Methodist Church Officers and Teams For New Term Beginning January 1, 2013 Staff Parish* 2014 Gary Musser Joan Ferguson 2013 Lisa McMurtry CP Mark Thelo Frieda Manion Gordon Vong – Layleader/Voting Member 2013 Ray Brick Maggie Hargis Chuck Byers George Johnson Bob Eaton 2013 Mark Lindstrom CP Dee Sneed Paul Weller Trustees * 2014 Tom Leatherwood Larry Schuler Pres Finance* 2014 Ron Lehman Emily Sergeant Jim Buckley 2015 Bob Coen Clay Schuler Cindy Boyer 2015 Ray Breen Wayne Gear 2015 Aileen Cotter Ray McSteen *Serves One Three Year Term 2013 Mary Caher Jackie Goggins Cp 2013 Sonny Hedgren Nick Priddy Deanna Ashby Donna Szoke Cp Witness *** 2014 Nancy Allen Pixie Koenig Outreach*** 2014 Lydea Blogh June Pelkey Wilson Young 10 2015 Georgia Johnson Sue Eaton Lou McCoy 2015 Jody Landes Sandy Fletcher Micki Thompson 2013 2013 Nancy Snow Maggie Hargis Deb O’brien NURTURING *** 2014 Beth Couch Janet Robb CP Mike Geldean EDUCATION *** 2014 Brenda Gear Wendy Mcsteen Mary Goggins-Smith Youth Council 2013 Alec Lindstrom Mary Easton Cp Dave Mcmurtry 2015 Elena Warren Joannie White 2015 Dave Barnes Cp Nancy Geldean Barbara Allen - Sub Committee To Education 2014 2015 Megan Sweet Mark Hawkins Amy Geldean Bobby Babich Mary Caher Katie McSteen Leadership *** (Nominations taken from the floor) 2013 2014 2015 Elaine Coen Beth Thelo Jack Hawkins Barbara Powell Kathy Leatherwood Pat Steele Lynette Bassett Paul Stewart Sharon Stewart *** Serves one three year term and can be asked to serve a second three year term Communications Anita Young, Tim Taylor, Andy Geldean Memorials Elaine Coen/CP, Bob Manion, Frieda Manion, Pat Williamson, Chuck Byers, Cherri Taylor 11 OUR CHURCH’S CONCERNS OUR CHURCH’S JOYS Surgeries/Hospitalizations Justin Abraham, Amy, Mary Caher, Paul Rodenback, Edie Van Deviere, Jim Koenig, Jan Chapman, Kathy Lawrence, Jeannie McKinney, Irma Meyers, Stan Yenerich, Bev VanAsdlen, Alexis Bargis, Eleni Arvantitis, Janet Weakley, Jim Walker, Elena Warren’s friends, Stephanie Friel, Jean Lawrence’s mother Adam Taylor (24th birthday), Alec Lindstrom (18th birthday), Yolanda Kezerle (90th birthday), Alexis Bargis (home from the hospital), Hinkley Big Rock HS (Soccer State Champs), Jenna Lynn (born in November), Alec Lindstrom (1st in Judo tournament), Bob Coen’s mother (95th birthday), Veronica Easton (Made varsity Winter Guard), Adam Smith (Student of the Month), Chloe McKinney’s Grandfather (73rd birthday), Tim Taylor’s grandmother (102nd birthday), Jessica & Baby Cora Smith (both home from the hospital), The Walker Family (EnJoi has opened a kiosk at Fox Valley Mall), Camden Elmore (4th birthday), Justin Prokop (Straight A’s 1st Qtr & High Honor Roll), Mr. Assaf (Fundraiser went well), Mallory Traver (scholarship to Univ. of Indianapolis), Bonnie Babich (Tests were negative), Elena Warren’s daughter & son-in-law (both got jobs), Sommer & Brett Middleton (closed on the home), Bob Williamson (getting stronger), Connie (Williamson) (good report on tests), Health Issues Jeff, Larry Goggins, Jean Lawrence’s mother, Julie Malcom, Jessica Klopfenstein, Paul Wicks, Rick Polak, Cindi Pappas, Jessica Smith, Dollie (Easton), Ruth Coleman, Jennifer (Hayden), Jessica Smith, Charlie Pagor, Tim Taylor’s Grandmother, Rosemarie (Easton) Other Those suffering from Hurricane Sandy, Sandra Rodenbach, Tim Taylor, Jon & Kara, The Doyle/Traver family, Kyle Laepalle, Wayne Wilda, Jr., the Wilda Family, George Gudenrath OUR DEEPEST SYMPATHIES It’s A Girl!
