North Captiva Island Club Check-in
Beach Vacation 4 Me
March Madness is Here at the beach!
It is great to be writing to you again. My thought after my last newsletter was to
write again after March Madness, but I discovered so much information on my last
trip to Florida, I felt the need to get the news out to you now.
My husband and I traveled to North Captiva the second week in February. We participated in the annual island clean up. This was a great community event and we
were so glad we could pitch in to make our island clean. Thanks to Barnacle Phil’s
for providing their famous rice and beans to all the participants. Along with participating in the island clean up, we spent many days outdoors experiencing some the
most glorious Florida sunshine. It was a fabulous week in paradise.
This newsletter features a great deal of information. The North Captiva Island Club
has a wonderful new check in center (see article) which compliments their new boat
so well. The check in process is smooth!!! Boats and Fun has many new activities
planned. Thank you to Matias from Boats and Fun for providing your exciting
news. I have a fabulous new home to introduce. Make sure you check out the Rum
Cove. We have a guest review of our evening out to Cabbage Key. Thank you
Clark for your entertaining letter! And yes…..there are still some fabulous homes
available for March and April. Many are at unbelievable prices too!! It’s not too
late to get a little sand between your toes!
Like many of you, I too am getting ready for my spring break trip to North Captiva.
I will be spending a week on the island with three dear friends and their children.
All of the moms in my group have been to the island previously. Some of the children have never visited. I look forward to experiencing the island with them. It is
hard to express what it is like to be with someone who has never been to North
Captiva.
Remember I can help you too experience the island for the first time. So…come on,
grab your flip flops and don’t forget your sunscreen…..Let’s Go to the Beach!
Island Pizza
Sarah and I were having a casual conversation at the Boat House and discovered
the plan to offer Pizza at Mangos every night during season. Sounds like a great
thing to entertain the younger ones in the family while you enjoy Mangos or the
Boat House.
Check into it when you arrive!!

The “water guy” review
It was the end of a perfect week of Sun, and??? Lots of sand! and more sand! And lots of Sun and Water too, though of
course it is an 'Island"....No trip to North Captiva is ever complete without a trip to Cabbage Key. Whenever I have
"out of town" friends on the island, I like to help end their week on a high note, and nothing works better than a trip to
Cabbage Key. John and Diane Porter, Mike and Sarah Rapp and me, Clark the "water guy" took off. As a business
owner on "North Cap"(we're alllowed to call it that since we "work" here, lol) I use a boat to come to work. Whatever I
am using that week is what we take to the Cabbage. Usually I have my 25' Cuddy Cabin "Fishhawk", but this week
was extra special. I had to bring over a supply of water equipment, so this was "barge" week! We boarded the "Pig-ina-poke" and set sail for Cabbage Key on board my 25' barge. Complete with resin benches and life preservers! Tonight
was not only the Rapp's last night on the island, but my birthday eve, so it was a special occasion. After a 45 minute
cruise, dodging frolicing dolphin and wayward seagulls, amidst calm waters, all special ordered for tonights excursion,
we arrived at the dock. There were several small "blowup boats" (as I call them) along with the usual 50 footers all
tucked in for the night. I prefer the dinners over the lunches because thats when the locals are there and not the "cattle"
boats with 650 tourists looking for their "Cheeseburger in Paradise".
Our reservations were for 630 "sharp", which we arrived on
time. We were greeted at the door of the Inn by a very
friendly host who gave us the choice of sitting in the "Money
Room" or the "Governor's Room", which we chose the latter.
We usually sit in the Money room, which has walls taped up
with the dollar bills from past guests and the names of their
boats, but tonight we went for the more "Formal" setting.
None of us desired an appetizer since we had already consumed ours on the way over to Cabbage Key. Elise was our
server, who was delightfully entertaining and attentive to our
needs. The ice in my glass never had a chance to "dry out", if
you know what I mean. And I was just drinking iced Tea. She told us the "Chef's special", and as always, thats what I
ordered. In fact, thats what I always order, because after almost 30 years of coming there, I have never had a bad meal.
Never a dry peice of fish. Even the steaks are excellent, but I like seafood when I'm eating on the water. John, Diane
and I all had the special, which was a Fennel Encrusted Red Snapper with a scallop, shrimp and red pepper relish,
served with mashed potato and hot and crispy green beans, just the way I like them. Whenever I get a fish with a relish
or sauce on top, I like to taste the fish without anything on it to see if the sauce is "hiding" a bad fish. Well WOW.
This fish with Fennel was outstanding. The flavors were awesome! And the relish was another pleasant surprise in
itself. Instead of the salad I had the Shrimp Bisque and it was also up to paar. Mike had Mahi Mahi and had no complaints there. Sarah liked the sound of the Chicken Picatta but wanted to have fish, so she ordered Grouper and requested the preparation include Capers and "viola". They custom made her meal! I don't think that is always an option
but last night we were fortunate to have a very attentive waitress who must be very persuasive in the kitchen!
I was the only one to have dessert which I didn't have a whole lot of room for, but since they brought out a piece of Frozen Key Lime Pie, supposedly made from an original 40 year old recipe, I enjoyed it. It had a candle on it and the staff
sang "Happy Birthday" which was a surprise.
Everyone was fat and happy now, used the facilities and got back on the Pig-in-a-poke for a slow ride home. As the
evening was winding up, one last thing we noticed was the green sparkles in the water caused fromt he turbulence from
the boat. Phosporus in the water, which is a rare sight to behold, was slightly visible tonight. The boats propeller
looked like fireworks jetting out from behind and the waves breaking from the pontoons were brilliant green. The only
thing missing was the dolphins swimming under water when the phosphorus is present.
Life today is so fast paced with the technology that we have, people forget to "stop and smell the roses". When you
come to North Captiva, remember to stop, look and listen. The stars are beautiful at night. You will be truly amazed
at what is out there, and that goes for everywhere, not just North Captiva. Is that my cell phone ringing??? OOps gotta
go. ~~~~ Clark Evano ~~~~
