Serving 1,500 a day Oldest library building still has pizazz The Campbell Library is housed in the oldest building in the Santa Clara County library system. But it has the latest books, DVDs and games. The latest acquisitions, according to Librarian Cheryl Houts, are Nintendo DS games. Built in 1975, the local library is now out of date and out of space. Book carts line the hallways and fill up all available space in the staff area. The reason? The library is a very popular place, serving 1,500 people a day. And 80 percent of library patrons now go on line and place a hold on the books they want, Houts says. Downstairs are 18 full service computers that have internet service as well as Microsoft Office Suite. The machines also have Facebook and Twitter and a new category: socially interactive chat for adults. Five more computers are dedicated to the library catalog and special data bases, such as Genealogy and Morning Star. “The library’s mission,” according to Cheryl Houts, “is to meet the informational and educational needs of the communities we serve.” “We try to keep abreast of all trends,” she adds. From the number of DVDs and games being checked out, the library is also a good source for entertainment and leisure activities. The Civic Center East Master Plan, adopted by the Campbell City Council in 2008, envisions a new 45,000 square foot library at First report Book lovers not deterred by use fees From early returns it looks like the $80 a year fee now being assessed for out-of-service area library patrons, will not deter true bibliophiles. On Tuesday, July 5, the first day that the new fee went into effect, the county collected $72,000, about $67,000 more than the usual collections. On Wednesday the county library administration center received $25,000 and on Thursday another $19,000. These two-day collections are about $40,000 above normal levels. According to Gay Strand, administrative services manager for the county library system, she witnessed patrons standing in line at local libraries to pay the new $80 fee. the present library site plus other amenities. But funding for the $53 to $66 million project is nowhere in sight right now. Surrounding cities have been able to build new libraries through bond measures or other local funding. Right now the new Gilroy library building is under construction with a completion date of April, 2012. Saratoga’s new library, funded by a local bond measure, opened in June of 2003. Cupertino general funds (after an advisory vote) paid for their new library that opened in October of 2004. Morgan Hill used city Redevelopment Agency funds to build their new library building that opened in July of 2007. Milpitas used both Redevelopment Agency and transit occupancy tax dollars to pay for their new library that opened in January of 2009. Finally, the new Woodland branch library in Los Altos, jointly funded by the City and the county library opened in March of 2010. The Campbell Library, on the other hand, is making some cosmetic changes to an old building. “It’s just a bandaid on a bleeding wound,” Librarian Houts explains. “We can’t do any structural improvements.” On Tuesday, July 19, the By Pat Safford The Campbell Library has about 30 book carts in use daily. Since there is not room for them all in the library public use area, many of them wind up tucked into the library staff area. Cheryl Houts (above) is in charge of the local library. Campbell Library will be closed for renovations (new carpeting). It will reopen on Wednesday. Later this year new furniture will be installed. Tuesdays and Saturdays are the two busiest days of the week in Campbell. Understandable, since the library is closed Sundays and Mondays. Voters approved Measure A that provided libraries with $5.4 million a year in May of 2005. But Measure B that would have added another $1.9 million failed to get the required two thirds votes. With the budget shortfall county libraries began to close one (additional) day of the week. Houts replaced former Librarian Terri Lehan when she retired three years ago. But she had been with the county library system since 1991, when she started as a substitute and later went on to be librarian for Los Altos from 2001 until 2008. Now she’s back home. The Campbell resident, mother of three daughters and grandmother of three, lives a mile or so from the library. So does she walk or bike to work? Neither. She drives her car and visits the Community Center twice a week and makes regular trips to the Los Gatos-based library headquarters….for now. Chamber calendar lists golf tournament Relay for Life volunteers Lorene and Roger Hughes and Madeline Borges take a break from walking around the track at the Campbell Community Center this past weekend to raise funds for cancer research. Madeline Borges’ group Rays of Hope, I, II, III raised $27,000, the largest amount for any team. This group also had the most participants and their 12 year old member, Brittany Vierra raised the most funds for youth. According to reports, the Campbell Relay raised $182,000. Two national American Cancer Society representatives visited the site to view Campbell’s exceptional fund-raising efforts. Campbell Chamber of commerce, known for their lighthearted approach to many of their events, is hosting their 47th annual golf tournament on Wednesday, August 24, at Cinnabar Hills. The traditional event’s theme will be A Taste of Italy and they are currently taking signups for the fun day, which will feature a noontime shotgun sendoff. Although this tournament is known for its serious competitors, fun competitions and a gala dinner are part of the attraction. Chamber president Cary Stover is working to bring sponsors in to offer prizes for the putting contest, the longest drives, the closest to the pin, the hole in one and the straightest drive, all supervised by Linda Klemzcak. Five different holes will have opportunities for players to compete for such honors as “closest to the cooler”. The tournament is an opportunity for players to support Chamber activities such as the Toy Program and Relay for Life. Top prize of the day will be a foursome at the prestigious Corde Valle Golf Club. Signups are currently being accepted at the chamber, 378 6252. Local Campbell Express, July 13, 2011 - page 2 Police Report The rear door of a business on Winchester Blvd. was forced open and cash, cigarettes, cigars and the surveillance system was taken. A computer was taken from the truck on a BMW on East Campbell Avenue during the night. A basketball player at Campbell Park left his backpack unattended on the hood of his car and it was taken. Two men located at Budd and Kenneth Avenues near midnight were determined to be intoxicated or under the influence of a controlled substance. The walls of a business on Bascom Avenue were spray painted. A catalytic converter was taken from a car on N. Third Street. The chain link fence separating the VTA tracks from property on Railway Avenue was cut. A 54 year old man stopped for a vehicle code violation was found to be in possession of a butterfly knife, .5 grams of methamphetamine, two glass pipes, and was under the influence of a CNS stimulant. He was booked into jail. On South Bascom Avenue, an unknown person gained entry to a locked vehicle and stole a GPS unit, a satellite radio and the vehicle title. On Creekside Way, windows were broken on a Nissan and the thief stole a head rest containing DVD video screen and a child’s pure with a cell phone inside. On the Los Gatos Creek trail at San Tomas Expressway, a man riding his bicycle collided head on with a woman riding southbound. He was determined to be intoxicated and booked into jail. A 17 year old reported stumbling down Sunnyside Avenue was found to be in possession of alcohol, marijuana, and cigarettes. Two men who were urinating on the front of a business in downtown Campbell were cited. Backing out of a parking stall on S. Bascom, this man collided with a parked car. It was determined he was DUI and he was booked into jail. Although this unknown person partially removed a screen on a residence on Whitehall, he fled before making entry. This 44 year old woman was booked into jail after he was extremely combative and too intoxicated to care for herself. This incident was in the 1800 block of S. Bascom near midnight on a Friday night. A fig tree and a pomegranate tree, both in pots, were taken from a home on Catalpa Lane. Well, that problem is certainly solved by the addition of two new downtown businesses: Rocket Fizz and now Frost Cupcake Factory offering wonderful gooey ooeys in that shop. Downtown Campbell is in danger of turning into an eater’s paradise! ----------There’s a parking lot across from the Campbell Express office that the City was leasing. With the budget cuts, they decided they could no longer afford to pay for the lot. The landlord closed the lot and put a chain across it (but generously allowed Sundown Cinema to continue). When we came in Monday morning, the chain, and apparently the bolt that anchored it, were nowhere to be seen—so naturally car drivers went back to their old parking habits—not noticing, apparently, the absence of the former signing displayed by the city. On Tuesday, someone came and closed the lot by pushing large garbage bins across the entrance. Last we heard, there was a planned meeting with the city, the landlord and some merchant representatives. To be continued. ---------The annual free kids’ play event, the Carol of Lights, is getting lots of wonderful support from the community. Home Church gives us space for a monthly bunco game and now a coalition of service clubs is planning a “picnic” at JD Morgan Park on Saturday September 10. More details to follow. Recently Joanna Herz scheduled a “tea” at her home with Carol of Lights as the recipient of the proceeds. --------I don’t recall if I’ve gotten on my soap box on this subject before but hearing a discussion on the radio about a proposed dog park in the East Bay sort of brought my feelings to the fore, again. Everyone is always surprised at my attitude about dog parks because they know I raised and exhibited Welsh Corgis for 40 years. The difference was, I took full responsibility for my dogs. I made sure they had adequate exercise and I didn’t expect the taxpayers to build me a place for my dogs to run. And that’s another error in thinking---that all dogs need and want to run. NO! Many dogs are content to be walked around the block once a day or even once a week—they’d just as soon maintain their muscle tone by a quick chase of a bee around the back yard in the morning. If a dog is properly fed, he isn’t likely to become overweight— too much food is the reason he is “pudgy” and since, unlike human consumption, we can regulate it, there’s no excuse. I belong to a rescue group and from time to time we’d end up housing a dog that weighed 50 pounds instead of 25. I don’t recall a case where by regulating intake, we weren’t able to solve the problem. Back to dog parks. Since when is it the responsibility of a community to provide space for your pet? And are you aware that most dog breeds are NOT pack animals and really don’t seek the company of other canines? I consider dog parks more of a place for dog owners to congregate and discuss their pets! Well, I’m sure by now I’ve angered some dog owners— especially the ones who stop by our office on their daily walks to get a treat. Your company exists to maximize shareholder value, PERIOD, end of story. Just because you’ve worked for a company for a long time doesn’t mean you are going to have a job as long as you want. You have to keep your job skills current to what the job market and your employer needs. Even with the most up-to-date skills you can get laid off and need a money reserve or rainy day fund to hold you over until your next position. Employees often participate in the employee stock purchase programs because it is offered and not because the stock is appropriately priced. If the company’s prospects are good and the stock fairly priced it may make sense to participate in the plan. If the company isn’t offering a discount I strongly suggest passing on the plan. Make sure you understand the tax rules for the stock purchase plan stock so you aren’t selling your company stock too soon to lock in the more favorable longterm capital gains rates. Don’t accumulate too much company stock. Having your job and your long-term savings tied up in the company’s future is putting too many of your eggs in one basket. State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto) announced today that he will be adding additional dates to his “sidewalk office hours” calendar. The Senator has scheduled seven additional dates in July and August. Simitian invites community members to visit and voice their questions and concerns about state legislative issues. The next scheduled “office hours” in this area will be Sunday, July 24, from 10–11:30 a.m. at Campbell Farmers’ Market on Campbell Avenue between Central and Second and Saturday, August 6, 10--11:30 a.m. Willow Glen Farmers’ Market behind the Garden Theatre at 1165 Lincoln Avenue. Simitian will host additional outreach events throughout the year. “The farmers’ markets are a wonderful venue for sidewalk office hours,” Simitian said. “The setting is relaxed, it’s easy to find, and a lot of folks stop by to talk on the spur of the moment. In these challenging times, it’s more important than ever for elected officials to stay in touch.” The church has left the building moving into the midst of the community. On a recent Sunday, the congregation of Holy Spirit Episcopal Church celebrated their weekly Eucharist at 10 a.m. on the grass at John D. Morgan Park, Section A. Amid the sounds of baseball games, soccer practice and families picnics, church members shared blessings on the neighborhood and on the surrounding activities. They report they had a wonderful time worshipping under the shade trees and followed up worship with a picnic, water games and bubbles for the children, bocce ball and badminton for children of all ages. One grandmother whose grandson plays baseball on Sunday morning joined the group, telling them how much she appreciated the opportunity to attend a church service and support her grandson at the same time. “The wider church is beginning to realize that we can’t stay behind the walls of the church any longer. If the people aren’t able to come to us for any variety of reasons, then we will come to them,” says one of their ministers. Senator keeps sidewalk office hours Church services conducted in local park Letter to the Editor Editor: It was with great disappointment that I read the well written article “Tree will not fall in Campbell” this past Saturday. Clearly common sense has failed to prevail both in terms of safety and freedom. Each of the suckers will in turn snap off in the future. These suckers will be replaced by others and the process will repeat for the remainder of the trees life. It is lunacy to require a resident to retain a tree that is a clear and present danger. On top of that, we could expand the title article to read, “Tree will not fall in Campbell” and neither will FREEDOM RING. It is their yard, their tree. It is not indigenous to the valley floor nor is it endangered. As to the three conditions: 1. Diseased or in danger of failing. A major piece has fallen and more will fall - CHECK! 2. Potential damage to existing or proposed buildings. 20 foot chunks usually have a trunk that is 6-10 inches in diameter and typically weighs 200-400 pounds. Falling from 60 feet it will land with tremendous force likely damaging the adjacent building - CHECK! 3. Economic enjoyment or hardship. Let me see, it is breaking up the concrete, threatens the building and is dangerous to humans and animals- CHECK on both the Economic Hardship and on the Economic Enjoyment fronts. The tree should come down, preferably before someone gets hurt. In late 2007, Mark Zuckerberg, the 23-year-old founder of Facebook, which was growing rapidly but not making any money, realized that he needed help. He was invited to a Christmas party at the home of a Silicon Valley executive, and at the door he recognized another guest, 39 year-old Sheryl Sandberg, one of the people who had been recommended to him. She was Google’s vicepresident for online global sales; she managed 4,000 people worldwide. Zuckerman, who is painfully shy, screwed up his courage and introduced himself. They talked for an hour at the door. After the holidays he e-mailed her, and they had many dinners. As it happened, Sandberg was looking for a new challenge; she had been talking with Donald Post who wanted her to come to Washington DC and become a senior executive at the Washington Post newspaper. Harvard PhD and Phi Beta Kappa economist, she was well known in Washington for her stints as Lawrence Summers’ chief executive when he was Deputy Treasury Secretary, and later Treasury Secretary, and for her service as the 29 year-old chief economist at the World Bank. Zuckerberg and Sandberg at first dined at the Flea Street Cafe’ near her house in Atherton until they needed more privacy so they ended up at her house. Her husband often had to shoo nightowl Zuckerman out at midnight so early-to-rise Sandberg could get some sleep. S a n d b e r g finally joined Facebook, where the main problem was revenue. Sandberg consulted with everybody, and confirmed the decision to advertise. Now FaceBook is profitable; and people are wondering when it will go public. But there’s more to be said about Sheryl Sandberg: she has always been concerned about how few women have top managerial jobs. She opposes all forms of affirmative action for women, or saving a seat on a board of directors for a woman. She says, “If you don’t believe there’s a glass ceiling, there is no need.”… “What I believe, and that doesn’t mean that everyone believes it, is that there are still institutional problems and we need more flexibility in all of this stuff.”… “But much too much of the conversation is on blaming others, and not enough is on taking responsibility ourselves.” Of all the seniors who paused on stage [at a graduation where Sandberg spoke, Ed] who said, ”You’re the baddest bitch!.” Sandberg said, “I hope she meant it as a compliment; she gave me a big hug.” I recommend that you get the magazine and read the whole article. Sacred Heart will give back packs School districts in low-income communities are especially hard hit by state budget cuts, while those in affluent areas benefit from greater financial support from their wealthier parents and communities. An ever greater number of public schools depend on parent teacher associations (PTAs) and local community giving to provide resources for Art and even basic school supplies. Not surprisingly, schools in affluent communities have much greater success in raising money, while those in low-income areas are left with no support. San Jose Unified School District, the largest district in Santa Clara County, is planning for cuts of $349 per child in the 2011-12 academic year. These cuts will mean that lowincome parents will have to cover additional costs for their children’s education, a cost that they cannot afford. “While a backpack filled with new school supplies might seem like a simple item,” said Poncho Guevara, Executive Director at Sacred Heart Community Service “it is not just relieving a financial burden from low-income families, but it is also providing hope and understanding that they are not alone in their struggle. We can all help our neighbors in need by donating backpacks and school supplies. Last July the registration line of families wrapped around the building on S. First Street with eager children anxiously waiting to sign up to receive their new backpacks. After just three hours of sign ups Sacred Heart was forced to turn people away. This year Sacred Heart is increasing their distribution goal to 2,000 children in order to meet the increased demand witnessed last year. They again expect the line of families to be as long, or even longer, than last year, but hope that with the increased distribution goal needy families won’t be turned away. Campbell Avenue. A wiry, dark-haired young man was atop the ladder working on a part of that sign. Turns out that the damaged part of the sign was the transformer, destroyed when a local reveler tore off the rear view mirror of a vehicle parked on the Del Grande property the night before and propelled it into the sign. “It happens all the time,” says proprietor Paul Del Grande, who estimates the repairs this time will cost between $600 and $700. He doesn’t plan to file a police report. “It doesn’t help,” Del Grande says. Del Grande has been amiss of city regulations for years--23 years, in fact. At issue with the city are the cars and refuse in the back lots of Del Grande’s property. Time was when things were very different, Del Grande remembers, and that was when Police Chief John D. Morgan was in charge. ‘Way back 50 years or so ago Chief Morgan came through when vandals trashed one of Del Grande’s (then) two gas pumps, he says. “Sometime in the early hours somebody smashed the glass front of one of my pumps,” Del Grande says. The next morning, Del Grande remembers, a well-mannered young local college student who had been visited by Chief Morgan stopped by to speak with him. The young man apologized for the vandalism and made arrangements to pay for repairs. A far cry from the way things are today, Del Grande says. On June 8 at about 11 p.m. six Campbell police officers made what they call a “parole search” of Del Grande’s building at 34 Dillon Avenue. That building was one of those red tagged earlier by Campbell code enforcement, meaning they could not be occupied. The police incident report for that date lists seven police officers responding to the report of “drugs-under the influence” at that address. No arrests or further police action was later noted. But what was noted by Del Grande and others was a thorough “trashing” of the back part of the house, and, according to bookkeeper Linda Leighton, the theft of precious heirloom jewelry of hers. According to Leighton, sheand a friend, Cory, were waiting at 34 Dillon for a ride to the airport when police arrived. She was detained on the ground, she says, in front of 34 Dillon while Cory was held on the front stone steps. An hour later, when the search was finished, Leighton says she was told she could go back in the house. What she says she found was storage boxes upended and debris spread throughout the back rooms. Her purse, also upended, was finally recovered from the debris. The jewelry cases (inheritated from her late mother) had been stored in a large suitcase and it had been opened and its contents strewed around the room, as well that night. Missing was a small digital camera (a key chain type) as well as a small photo viewer that held 60 photos. But the most poignant loss for Leighton was the loss of jewelry she says she had inherited from her late mother’s estate. Among the missing jewelry was a large blue sapphire ring surrounded by diamond baggets. A heart-shaped ring with diamond chips was also missing, along with a diamond-studded tennis bracelet that was broken just before the clasp. Leighton still has the missing bracelet’s matching earrings, she says. Police Chief Gregory Finch says he doesn’t believe his officers took the jewelry. The Chief referred to Leighton as “a squatter” in the redtagged building. According to Paul Del Grande, the property owner, Leighton has been his bookkeeper for the past 12 years and is no squatter. “Why isn’t she trying to sell the jewelry? the Chief asked. Ingredients: 4 Nori sheets 4C Sushi rice 4 oz Fresh tuna 3T Mayonaise 1.5T Siracha sauce 2C Water for wetting hands for rice Spicy Tuna Method: Place the fresh tuna into a bowl and mash with a fork. Mix in the mayonnaise and the siracha sauce. You can add more or less depending on your spice level. Place the nori sheet on to the bamboo mat shiny side down. Wet hands and spread the rice evenly on the bottom half of the nori sheet. Place the spicy tuna down the middle of the rice. Roll up the bamboo mat, pressing forward to shape the sushi into a cylinder. Press the bamboo mat firmly and remove it from the sushi. Cut into 8 bite size pieces. Owner Del Grande disputes the fines but his protest, by way of his bookkeeper, has not been accepted by the City. Local Campbell Express, July 13, 2011 - page 8 Move Over is message to drivers on highways This week 700 Caltrans electronic highway signs throughout California lit up with a new Move Over message to kickoff a statewide campaign to increase safety for motorists, highway workers and law enforcement. The message, “Slow or Move Over for Workers, It’s the Law,” will stay posted through July 22. Caltrans will also begin a new billboard campaign and issue a public service announcement to television stations statewide reinforcing the Move Over message. In May and June, three Caltrans highway workers died on the job within 48 days---the most in such a short period of time. The CHP will provide the Move Over safety message during their morning traffic updates on broadcast stations statewide, and officers will be on the lookout for motorists not following the law. “This traffic safety campaign isn’t about writing citations, it’s about providing a safer work environment for everyone who does business along the side of a highway,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “The only way to prevent tragedies from occurring on the side of the road is by giving emergency personnel, highway workers, and the public adequate space.” The DMV will display the Move Over safety message on electronic signs in 135 field offices, and highlight the law in its handbook and written driver’s test, where it will appear along with Slow for the Cone Zone information. “Our collective goal is that motorists will become more attentive as they drive,” said DMV Director George Valverde. “With continued cooperative efforts such as the Move Over campaign, we can further improve highway safety.” The departments will update their web sites and social media pages, such as Facebook and Twitter, to reinforce the Move Over message. “When we see Caltrans, law enforcement, emergency medical services, tow trucks, and other emergency or construction vehicles next to the roadway, they are there for one purpose - our safety,” said Christopher J. Murphy, Director for the California Office of Traffic Safety. “Let’s keep them and ourselves safe by giving them plenty of room to operate.” The Move Over law, which took effect in 2007, was amended in 2009 to add Caltrans vehicles displaying flashing amber warning lights to the list of vehicles for which motorists must move over if safe to do so or slow down. To date, 45 other states have enacted similar laws requiring motorists to move over or slow down. It is not like anything we have had at the Fair in recent history” promised Delana Romero, manager of the Santa Clara County Youth Fair. She added “This is part of the innovation and very successful reinvention we have been undergoing the past four years.” She was referring to A World of Music, an interactive ‘hands-on’ museum of music, housing over 300 different ethnically diverse and/ or historical instruments from six continents. Fairgoers will discover that music is indeed a universal language. By exploring the instruments in this exhibit, they will get a glimpse into other cultures and history in an educational yet fun environment. In addition to the museum portion of the exhibit, A World of Music features ongoing interactive rhythm workshops whereby students of all ages can gather to learn simple patterns under the guidance of a musician/teacher. The exhibit also schedules daily drum circles where even the most rhythmically challenged fair guest can participate, exploring simple percussion and drum rhythms, while being given creative freedom and learning to work together as a team. If there is a difference between the minimum wage rates predetermined by the Secretary of Labor and the general prevailing wage rates determined by the Director of the California Department of Industrial Relations for similar classifications of labor, the Contractor and subcontractors shall pay not less than the higher wage rate. The Department will not accept lower State wage rates not specifically included in the Federal minimum wage determinations. This includes “helper” (or other classifications based on hours of experience) or any other classification not appearing in the Federal wage determinations. Where federal wage determinations do not contain the State wage rate determination otherwise available for use by the Contractor and subcontractors, the Contractor and subcontractors shall pay not less than the Federal minimum wage rate, which most closely approximates the duties of the employees in question. 8. Substitution of Securities. Pursuant to Section 22300 of the California Public Contract Code, the Contractor may request the City to make retention payments directly to an escrow agent or may substitute certain securities for money withheld by the City to ensure performance under the Contract. 9. Licenses. The Contractor shall possess and maintain a valid Class “A” General Engineering Contractor License at the time the Contract is awarded. Failure to meet this requirement shall render the bid as non-responsive and shall act as a bar to award the Contract to any bidder not possessing said license at the time of bid and forfeiture of the bid will result. All contractors and subcontractors shall have and maintain a current and valid contractor license of the required classification from the State of California throughout the course of this project. 10. Business License. All contractors and subcontractors working in the City of Campbell must have a valid City of Campbell Business License at the time the Contract is awarded. Portera is the name they have chosen to support Second Harvest Food Bank, Career Closet, Community Health partnership and Sacred Heart Community Services. The three year old organization is asking for a can of food, a suit you no longer use, a back pack and a $5 bill. The concert is by a Michael Jackson Tribute Band Foreverland who will play from 6- 8 p.m. near Rock Bottom Brewery. Theatre on San Pedro Square Alzheimer’s cafe opens Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, executive director of The Tabard Theatre Company at Theatre on San Pedro Square, is opening an Alzheimer’s Cafe at Theatre on San Pedro Square, the first such cafe in California. The Cafe will meet the second Wednesday of every month, from 2 – 4pm. The first meeting will take place July 13. and offer everyone a chance to relax and have a good time with friends, whether they are caregivers, professionals, family, or people living with dementia. As Cassetta tells it this is not a structured program but an opportunity during the two hours for people to come and go as they please, where they can gather to chat, share stories, gain information and, if they choose, participate in creative outlets such as art, writing, music, or comedy. It offers a chance for caregivers to relax and connect with others in the same situation. People with dementia will have the opportunity to socialize and enjoy a day out in a creative environment. Cassetta, whose father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s last year, was inspired to begin an Alzheimer’s Cafe in San Jose through reading a recent article and found she was able to provide both a venue and a supportive organization through Theatre on San Pedro Square, which is managed by The Tabard Theatre Company. “This is a win-win all the way around. I’m excited to be able to provide an opportunity for connection for those who are touched by Alzheimer’s. Until my dad was diagnosed, I had no idea how widespread this disease is. My learning curve in how to deal with it was very steep and very difficult in every possible way. Having an informal, relaxed, non-clinical and non-judgmental place to meet people who are also on this journey would have been a blessing. My hope is that people will respond to a cafe in San Jose the way they have in Santa Fe, Seattle, Nova Scotia, Hampshire (UK) and other places in Europe.” Theatre on San Pedro Square is located at 29 North San Pedro Street in downtown San Jose, near Santa Clara Street.
