GL West Star had the honor recently of being invited to the Safmarine Ubuntu Challenge, an annual team building event held in Munich, Germany. A four member GL West Star team traveled to Munich and came back with some great memories and unfortunately also some injuries. You can find more on the event in Highlights. In Expert Speaks this month, we change track from the usual treatments of commercial topics with a contribution by Mr. Sreekumar, Commercial Director, who encourages us to take a step back from our daily pursuits to dwell on self-improvement. With the holy month of Ramadan concluding in the middle of July, we wish all our colleagues a blessed Eid Al-Fitr. Tervin Aranha 1 Expert Speaks Success Mantra; Life & Business Can you imagine a world where people do not communicate? Mr. S. Sreekumar, Commercial Director, G.L. West Star Shipping LLC We attribute all the changes that has taken place on earth as a result of people engaging themselves in effective communication….. Sree said while explaining the importance of good communication and how it leads to success in business as well as inlife! Effective communication: There is nothing more than communication that need to be improved if you need to be happy and successful. One of the biggest challenges human race is currently facing and faced in the past is communication. In this new world of technology, though we communicate, but not very effectively. Effective communication amounts to understanding the audience/Customer before you communicate. You may be an expert in your trade, but the customer or the audience is not, therefore select the most possible 2 “ One of the biggest challenges human race is currently facing and faced in the past is communication “ Expert Speaks example related to the industry to explain complicated situation. For example, the word “chartering” is quiet complicated for a layman. Explain that it is similar to hiring a taxi if you understand it well. Select the simplest language to explain, remember you need to be an expert to explain a complicated matter in simple words. People like to hear the facts always but not the distorted ones. Communicate with compassion, if a customer is in trouble, please show that you too are concerned about it and you are working for a solution. They don’t want you to be a radio station. People can read the tonal quality. It is always good to remember the world around you is what we communicated so far. Politeness: Polite behavior is a direct reflection of knowledge, and upbringing of a person. Politeness can touch the heart of the people and help you to bond well with them. You can very well express your concern very firmly without being un-polite. Train yourself this way and see the wonder that will do. “ Politeness can touch the heart of the people and help you to bond well with them is a proverb. Experience will help you to get alerts when things are going well or otherwise. Then comes your ability to respond on time. Progress in our industry is directly related to your ability to give effective response on time as we are working with variable(s) all the time (From Shipping line, to customs to Port etc.). “ for any event is key to success. The right dress code communicates your readiness for the job you have undertaken, your discipline, and your overall attitude towards life. If you find it difficult to select the right combinations white is universally accepted colour for any kind of job. In business especially perception matters. Timely attention as a part of effective communication:“Stitch in time saves nine” Dress Code: Presenting yourselves suitably All the best for a successful year ahead…. 3 Highlights Heavy Equipment Shipment Coordination is the key when it comes to handling heavy shipments and Globelink West Star Air freight team has proved this while handling two ship cranes for vessels waiting in Hamriyah port… als and equipment to greater distances within the time frame. Wemag would like to share another success story from Globelink West Star Shipping regarding a heavy haul, this time from the Air Freight department. terpart M/s Avion in bringing two ship cranes in two different schedules from Italy for delivery to two vessel docked at Hamriyah port in Sharjah. Ship spares are always time sensitive and especially those spares which needs to be delivered to the vessels waiting at the port, since these vessels are subject to high berth hire charges on a daily basis. “Time saved is money saved” Realizing the time sensitiveness, the response team has acted in the wee hours to ensure that the delivery has been made successfully. First crane delivered to the vessel : M V Sea Eagle “Dolphin” (9 ton weight) Second Crane delivered to the vessel: M V Sea Eagle “Shark” (9 ton Weight) Needless to mention that this dedication has won the heart of the client and this could be the beginning of a long standing relationship. 5 Wemag Congratulates Our Team & Our Partner M/S Avion For Its Commitment And Dedication In Handling The Shipment With Precision. Highlights Seamark Project shipment to South Sudan Routine freight forwarding and transportation in itself has become a challenge now – stiff competition, narrow margins and extended credit. Meanwhile a shipment of the following nature has certainly rejuvenated the real freight forwarder within us, says the Seamark team under Mr. Anu Zacharia who has carried out a logistically challenging air shipment to South Sudan. Recently we had the fortune of handling 108.50 tons of GTX and GMX (geotextiles / geo membrane) - actual challenge was to find a transport solution for subject cargo to a location called “Paloich” in South Sudan. Sudan as you know is currently under political unrest / Civil war. Shipment was for a petroleum refinery in Paloich. The only commercial airport in South Sudan is Juba – which is almost ‘1 Hour and 20 Minutes’ flying distance away from Paloich. Due to high risk and securities reasons it is impossible to move cargo using land trans6 port from Juba to Paloich. That’s when the consignee informed us about an unpaved airstrip adjacent to the refinery – details of the same was handed over to the operator (IL76). It was purely Pilot’s decision to fly or not and fortunately it was a YES from him and the crew! The next hurdle was to find insurance for the cargo which was also sourced and done just in time. 01st Flight took-off Ex-Sharjah International airport on 12th May 2015 early morning 03:45 (36.50 tons) Highlights 02nd Flight took-off Ex-Sharjah International airport on 19th May 2015 early morning 03:24. (36.50 tons) 03rd Flight was secluded for 25th May morning departure. However, on 19th late night there was a militant attack in and out of Paloich airstrip. Hence the 03rd flight was suspended indefinitely putting both the shipper and consignee under tremendous pressure. Fortunately and by the grace of God, our customer’s facility sustained min damage with no human causality. On the other side, uncertainty and pressure started mounting as the Charter contract had already been signed for the 03rd lot. Full payment received and half of the cargo already received for shipment. We were now worried about the indefinite delay – landing / over flying permits (from Saudi, Oman, Yemen, Eritrea and Djibouti), oil prices (rates were valid till 31st May 2015) and insurance approvals. Fortunately by 23rd May situation improved at Paloich – it was safe and they were ready to receive the third lot. 7 Finally, the 03rd flight took-off Ex-Sharjah Santosh D’Souza, Alex Augustine, Elias on 27th May 2015 early morning by 2:45 Mathias Hitesh Suvarna, Aneesh Jose, (36.50 tons). Article Social Media and its bad influence on society. Gopal shares his concern over the increasing social discord created by the social media in modern times! Social media allows you to find and connect with just about anyone. Browsing through these media can make you feel connected to a larger community, but such easy, casual connection in an electronic environment can also have its downside. Social media sites makes it difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and the numerous casual relationships formed through social media. By focusing so much of our time and psychic energy on these less meaningful relationships, our most important connections may perish. A false sense of connection prevails which lead to a social vacuum. These are concerns shared by various social scientists and not my words, says Gopal. The proximity provided by social me20 Article dia is available to predators as well as friends in similar measures. Kids in general are vulnerable to the practice of cyber-bullying in which the offenders, anonymously or even posing as people their victims trust, terrorize individuals in front of their peers. Such online attacks lead to profoundrationalwounds. In several cases, victims have even been driven to suicide. Cyber bullying has thus become a nerve breaker which is eventually destroying the future generation, Gopal added. While many businesses use social networking sites to find and communicate with clients, the sites can also prove a great distraction to employees who may show more interest in what their friends are posting than in their work tasks. Social networking sites often compromise the privacy of the public. Intimate details are often floated in the public domain which exposes the individual’s privacy which is eventually being misused by the cyber predators. Even institutions like marriages have fallen, out of mistrust created among the couple. People tend to get so engrossed in the 21 cyber world which in reality do not exist and the details posted normally remain available indefinitely. While most sites allow their users to control who sees the things they’ve posted, such limitations are often forgotten, can be difficult to control or don’t work as advised. Gopal concluded by saying that a great deal of productive time is being wasted for trivial forwards and family life is wrecked for lack of trust and interaction. Though the views expressed by Mr. Gopal is strictly his personal views, Wemag shares these views and urge our dear colleagues to be more responsible in their approach while dealing with the social media. The Season was almost approaching its fag end with the ongoing Ramadan Tournaments which commenced in June. The best part however, was our cricket team emerging victorious in the prestigious Power Horse T-20 cricket tournament. This victory has certainly earned our team a place amongst the elite league of cricketing giants in the domestic cricketing fraternity in UAE. Power Horse T-20 Riding on the back of a successful campaign in ICL, our team was oozing with confidence entering the Power Horse T-20, a premier T-20 organized under the auspices of Dubai Cricket Council featuring the major “A” division teams. Following consecutive victories in the league games, our team reached the quarter finals and were up against NTDE. After conquering them our team marched a head ICL Runners Up - Our Cricket team along with our Commercial Director, Mr. Sumesh Nair 24 Sports & Fitness to face the mighty Gourmet CC who had beaten a formidable Multiplex CC, one of the favorites to win the tournament. In a thriller which went to the final over, our team ensured a berth in the finals surpassing Gourmet CC. That victory only paved way for a nail biting final where our team would rub shoulders with one of the most powerful opponents in the UAE domestic cricket, “Team Interface”. Our team were put to bat by the opponents after winning the toss. Following a brilliant display of class yet again by our star batsman of the season, Anfal, which was supported equally by Laxman who played a cameo in the end, our team managed to get 170 runs in allotted 20 overs. In a valiant chase, our opponents could never gather momentum. Speedster Ajith gave them the first blow in his initial spell itself knocking off their opening batsman. Shanib, who certainly has been consistent this season with his off spin took 3 wickets while Sharan took one wicket. A good partnership from their middle order batsman steadied their ship which at one point threatened to take the game 25 away from our team. Some extraordinary brilliance in the field from our players managed to get four crucial run outs which sealed the match in our favor in the last over of the match. It has been a rewarding season for our team who has lifted 2 winners trophy and one Runner up trophy in the 5 tournaments played so far. Wemag congratulates our team on this great achievement and also wishes great success in future endeavors. Ramadan Tournament Current cricketing season which started in October last year culminates with Ramadan tournaments which starts before the commencement of Ramadan month and ends before the Eid. Going by our convention, our team is playing two major tournaments this Ramadan, DCC Ramadan T-20 & Legend Cup T-20. We shall exclusively cover the detailed performance of our team in these tournaments in the upcoming edition.
