Charity and Social Services Committee HANDS-ON VOLUNTEER PROGRAM The International Association of Chile (IAC) members volunteer with six charitable organizations in the Santiago Metropolitan area through the Hands-On Volunteer Program. T he Hands - On Volunteer Program provides support for six charities, working within the structure of each organization according to their needs. These activities provide volunteers with the opportunity to be involved on a personal level with different nonprofit groups and to network with each other while serving the community. CASA ACOGIDA GRADA, ÑUÑOA This residential facility provides safety and security in a loving environment for infants and toddlers taken from unsafe home situations (wards of the court). The home serves 40 children from 0-5 years old with the goal of the children being reintegrated into their families or adopted. There are volunteers going almost every day, and they assist with feeding and play with the children. It is a public primary school, which also offers educational support for students with multiple disabilities who are unable to proceed on to regular secondary schools. The IAC offers weekly ESL classes at Colegio Helen Keller on Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30pm for students who reside at the school during the week. IAC volunteers also coordinate other activities, including a dental program and an annual ski program for a small group of students. Volunteers assist in two shifts, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon, Monday through Friday. They help the staff in whatever way possible, feeding, changing diapers, bathing, and playing. PAZ Y ALEGRÍA, BATUCO This is a nursing home for the elderly run by the Sisters of Charity. The home provides medical, social and emotional support for the residents. Volunteers visit the elderly and assist with meals and physical therapy for example.
