My trip to France last February, though—which was just the second time I travelled without family—started off as a fun reunion with some of my friends and ended up as a great learning experience for me. After meeting my friends in Paris, I decided to spend time exploring 04 small towns and found myself in one of the Alpine towns in the Chamonix region. A small village surrounded by the Mont Blanc on all sides with minimal stores and bars, it’s a skiing destination with ski slopes merging right into the village—attracting tourists from all over Europe. According to a few people I met there, Indians don’t usually explore this side of France as Bollywood’s influence means they would prefer going to Switzerland instead. On visiting Chamonix, I realised that there’s so much more to France than just Paris. I fell in love with the place immediately and knew that I had to bring my kids back here. It’s a town where everyone knows everyone; they are not crazy about technology and gadgets, there are no shopping malls or big brands and by six in the evening everyone retires to their homes to spend time with their families. A stark difference from the kind of life children are exposed to in big cities today. I spent a week there doing yoga, interacting with people, exploring the village, trekking from one peak to another and simply relaxing. Locals of the town can be seen skiing all day long and there were children from various schools across Europe on skiing trips, too. It was a wonderful sight to see youngsters get involved in activities that wouldn’t need them to use their iPads or phones. The opportunity for cultural exchanges is immense in this town and there Sujatha Duvvuri, member of The Club, tells us about the surprise that awaited her on her trip to France and how it has now become something she is passionate to encourage in our youth. is something for everyone to take back home. As each day passed, the desire to bring my children as well as organise camps for schools here in India became stronger. It’s a safe place and people look out for each other. I would like the kids to experience my camps. Being a mother, I have tailored this programme based on the several camps I have sent my kids to. I also feel that parents should encourage their children to participate in such camps. It is also an ideal location for corporate leadership camps. Our website is a work in progress but, for more information please visit www.adventedge.co.uk. You can contact me at sujathad@ adventedge.co.uk MY STORY For a Greater Purpose It was in 2011 that member Swarnali Dasgupta ran the ‘City to Sea’ marathon in Australia to raise funds for the Cancer Society of Victoria. That was the day she realised that each one of us in this world has a greater purpose in life: to give back something to the community we inhabit. A fter living life like neonomads for several years, my husband’s job as the Managing Director of J&J Medical finally brought us back to Mumbai in 2012. I pondered then between the idea of going back to my previous profession of scientific research or sharing my time and experiences with cancer-stricken children from impoverished backgrounds. It didn’t take much time for me to settle for the latter. My first day at the Tata Memorial Hospital made me experience a riot of emotions—the helplessness of the naive parents, their financial limitations and housing problems, the pain of watching their child’s body be ravaged by treatments such as chemotherapy, etc. I didn’t know where or how to start. I soon found my step, though, and started working in the OPD of the hospital by lending a listening ear to the patient’s family; I help provide the right counsel, comfort and guidance to patients and their relatives in such needy times. I am also accompany my expatriate friends to spend time with neglected and abandoned inmates in a Byculla old-aged home. When I visit them, I feel like a daughter who is returning home to her parents. When The Club officials offered their willingness to bring a smile to the kids suffering from cancer and to their care-givers by inviting them to spend a fun-filled day at The Club, they stole my heart. Our little heroes who fight a battle within their frail, under-nourished bodies marched in with winning smiles and twinkling eyes. They left with a hope to live, to fight and to move on in life. The Club was also kind enough to hold a party for the senior citizens with great élan at Westburry’s. It still amazes me to think how such a simple gesture can make such a huge difference in some people’s lives. All that is needed is some time, a kind heart a gentle touch and I would like to invite all of you to join me in whichever way you can. THE CHEF’S SPECIAL Musalam Raan Lucknowi Biryani Pathar Kebabs Moong Ghost O n a starlit Sunday night, a table was set at Garden Grill for our members Mr. and Mrs. Sam Balsara, their daughters Tanya and Lara and their very close friends. Sam Balsara and his family are old members of The Club and as his eldest daughter Lara confessed, “It’s ‘home away from home’— the cool winter weather, sitting under the open sky, surrounded by greenery, the delicious food and excellent service— makes every dinner here a memorable one.” The Garden Grill restaurant is one of their personal favourites—the cool winter weather, dining under open skies, the delicious food and excellent service, makes every dinner here a memorable one. For their dinner on Sunday, a special menu was prepared by our new Chef Mr. Ghulam Nabi Qureshi. The fare began with pre-plated starters, followed 08 by some signature dishes of Chef Qureshi that certainly tickled everyone’s palate: Gulaam Pasand Raan, Nakahaski Subzi, Dum ki Daal and Lucknowi Murg Biryani. All these dishes were accompanied by some mouth-watering parathas and naans, followed by interesting dessert options in the form of Gulam Pasand Shahi Tukda and everyone’s favourite,Gajar ka Halwa. For Lara, the dishes that stood out were the Lasooni Prawns and Lucknowi Murg Biryani for its typical Lucknowi flavours and aroma. Lara confessed that her family and she do not eat typical Indian meals often, but Garden Grill is a restaurant that they really like to visit and they relish the meals here. They were also happy with Chef Qureshi who brought with him some newness to the menu. They certainly went back with wonderful memories of the evening; the food satisfying them thoroughly and were already seen planning their next visit. Chef Ghulam Nabi Qureshi hails from Hazratganj in Lucknow and comes from a family of chefs. He is a progeny of the famous Imtiaz Qureshi-launched iconic restaurant ‘Dum Pukht’ in ITC. He started his career at Krishna restaurant under the guidance of Chef Imtiaz Qureshi, who is not only his guru but relative as well. Chef Qureshi moved on to five-star restaurants in the year 1979 and has never looked back since. He was especially invited to Ha’il city in Saudi Arabia where he worked as a chef in the Prince’s palace. He has also helped start many restaurants in Mumbai. Chef Qureshi is very happy to be a part of the Garden Grill and it gives him immense pleasure to prepare the Awadhi feast for all members and guests. You sure wouldn’t want to miss it! FLAVOURS OF KERALA MENU Vegetarian items: Ulli theeyal Eruseri Pachakari kurma Kadala karry Kootukari Thoren Non-vegetarian items: Meen Pollichadu Kozhi varatti Erachi ularthiadu Sweet items: Parippu Pradhaman Paal ada Rice item: Malabar Moplah Biryani Tiffin items: Puttu Malabar paratha Text by Namrata D’souza I n a land that has earned the famous moniker of being God’s own country, that its cuisine is absolutely divine is a statement that needs no justification. Kerala’s local cuisine is markedly known for its richness (provided by the generous usage of coconuts) that blends harmoniously with the pepper-hot flavours of the spices used; the pungency heightened by the use of tamarind. Gifted immensely by nature, Kerala’s cuisine is heavily influenced by locally-grown products such as plantains, bitter gourd, yam, colocasia, ash gourd, etc. Its location along the coastline means that along with vegetables, seafood also forms a major chunk of the staple diet here. Diverse and intensely flavoured, it is this authentic taste of Kerala that The Club looks to bring to all this February with its Southern Spice Flavours of Kerala festival— unmarred by foreign influences. Start off with a tangy refreshing drink of Kurumolagu thakkali rasam that is a tomato and black pepper rasam. Vegetarians can then dig into a number of dishes that glorify the locally produced ingredients to the hilt. Meat lovers must opt for the Kozhi mappas— coconut milk base in which chicken is cooked with onions, tomatoes, green chillies, whole spices, pepper and curry leaves. There are Kerala tiffin items to sample too, be it Idiappams or Kallappams i.e. spongy griddle cakes made with special toddy fermented rice batter, flavoured with garlic and cumin. Intricate and detailed, local flavours of Kerala are set to waft strongly and deliciously around The Club. Be sure to be there and indulge in some divine goodness. I am fortunate to have found the best coach in Anjan. I also train and play with coaches in Dubai and Los Angeles since I travel and live there as well. But I find Anjan by far the best in terms of his technical skills and coaching abilities. He will show you videos of you playing to explain where you went wrong so that those areas can be corrected and improved upon. Meet Divyank Turakhia, our young, dynamic member who at the age of 16 became known as the youngest serial entrepreneur. Starting his career at the age of 14 as a freelance internet consultant, he co-founded Directi when he turned 16 years of age. We met him for a têtêa-têtê at the Waterside Café along with his tennis coach, Anjan Viplav, and got to know his sporty side. Text by Vaishali Fernandes 30 Was there any particular reason for you to have chosen tennis? Tennis is a very interesting sport. It involves a lot of technical knowhow and I thought this was the best sport to learn. It’s also very good for overall fitness. I also believe that it’s very important to get your fundamentals right in whatever you do. I apply this to everything in my life. So when I decided to play tennis, I wanted to learn about it and the technicality of the game first, so that I learn the game well. We hear that you are also very passionate about flying. That’s true. It’s my favourite hobby apart from scuba diving. I learnt flying at Santa Monica, Los Angeles. It’s easier to learn abroad than in India because of the regulations, etc. Were you always interested in sports and adventure activities? I was never the sporty kind; in fact, I never played a sport in school. I never found much interest in it and would always run away to the computer lab. You started your career at the age of 14 as a freelance internet consultant for large businesses. Would you say starting out young was an advantage? Age is not really a factor when you want to learn something. However, starting young does have its own advantages; you have more energy, are ready to take risks and are more open to trying new things. Anjan Viplav, Tennis Coach at The Club, shares his thoughts about Divyank: “There are many members who just play the game casually. They do not really spend time in learning. But Divyank was clear from the very beginning that he wanted to first learn the sport. He wanted to know everything about the game.” What would you attribute your success to? I am not afraid of failure. It is a part of everything we do and it’s only through failures that we learn. I believe you should never give up, never stop trying. Try a different approach, look at alternative solutions, but don’t give up. Most importantly, constantly update yourself and be ready to try new things. How does being a young entrepreneur reflect in your company, on your employees, etc.? You succeed in life only through constant learning, discovering new ideas, adopting fresh approaches and all this reflects in the work culture adopted in the company. It’s a youth-friendly atmosphere and the staff is always ready to learn. What message would you like to share with young entrepreneurs who are venturing out? Success is not based on the dollars you earn, but on the quality of life you live. Do what makes you happy. If there’s something that doesn’t make you happy, don’t do it. Figure out what you are passionate about and how much risk you’re willing to take. When it’s your own business, it’s much tougher—you need to be committed, willing to give long hours and be flexible. Most importantly, make the best use of the time that you have in hand. Make time for family, friends, relaxation, rejuvenation, hobbies, etc. that help to increase productivity and find solutions. A tired mind and a hectic life will not allow that. Do you have a message for the parents of today’s generation? I was a very naughty child in school, probably a nightmare for my teachers and parents. However, my parents always supported me. I believe that your performance in school does not determine who you are and how successful your life will be. You can succeed only if you are passionate and you need to find your passion and excel in it. Children should be given the freedom and space to realise and choose what their passion in life is. TRAVEL Diving The Bahamas IN Aniket Parikh—a 23 year old, young and adventurous member of The Club—is someone for whom meeting sharks in the wild was a bucket-list activity he had to cross off. Having looked up dive spots around the east coast of America, he recounts his memorable trip where he greeted the big fishes in all their ferocity. M y search for adventure was answered when I came across UNEXSO (Underwater Explorers Society) in the Grand Bahamas Island, Bahamas. The objective of my trip to this beachy paradise was to dive, and there is no better place to do this than UNEXSO—the world’s first diving resort that offers the safest and most varied services in The Bahamas. You can learn how to dive, night dive, shark dive, snorkel and much more. DIVING WITH DOLPHINS As a certified PADI Advanced Diver, I opted to do the Shark Dive and the Dolphin Dive during my time there. The dolphin dive starts at dawn with the mammals 32 having been trained to follow the boat and jump in the wake left behind, resulting in a playful and magnificent companion show. On reaching the dive site, the instructor descended first, with the rest of the team following him to the sand bank. Once there, he partook in some drills with us such as dancing with the dolphin, riding the dolphin, spinning, swimming and kissing – we did all this 40feet under sea level while being strapped in a full scuba suit. After the drills, I was given some time to play with the dolphins around the corals, swim with them and play hide-and-seek behind the leaves, only to realise that the air in my tank was a limiting factor and I had to return. MEETING & GREETING SHARKS After a siesta and tangy lunch, I returned for the Shark Dive that is limited to only 10 people. As soon as some of the Caribbean Sharks (the largest I saw was around 5 ft long) are spotted, you descend into the water and get into a kneel-down position for the rest of the dive. It is important here that you are able to regulate your air, especially in high-stress situations, and that you don’t flap around in the water to maintain your balance/ posture as a protruding hand could be misunderstood as bait by the sharks. Once everyone is lined up side-by-side in the kneeling position and the safety divers have gained position behind you, the instructor descends in a chain mail suit/metal armored suit with a tank full of bait for the sharks. He began by attracting a shark or two in the nearby region, and before I knew it, that number had grown to around 25-30; there were sharks gliding right over my head, between my legs or right above my shoulder. The instructor then tried to put a shark into sleep state by rubbing the pointed section of its nose. He succeeded after a couple of attempts and held the shark by its nose and dorsal fin and brought it to each one of the divers to touch and stroke. Now that was an experience I wasn’t expecting! To conclude the dive, the instructor walked away from our line to a safe distance and allowed us to ascend, before he stopped feeding and returned to the boat. It was scary and nerve-wrecking, but nonetheless an experience I highly recommend. Make sure to carry a GoPro to capture all the underwater action! WELCOME TO THE BAHAMAS! An island country dotted with around 700 islands, cays and islets in the Atlantic Ocean, The Bahamas is an explorer’s haven—from sailing around the Abacos’ history-filled Loyalist Cays and partying till dawn at Paradise Island’s over-the-top Atlantis resort; from diving the spooky blue holes of Andros and kayaking the 365 Exuma Cays to lounging on Eleuthera’s pink-sand beaches. There is never a dull moment spent among the silvery-green sands and waters of this charming archipelago. GET THERE: The largest airports in The Bahamas are at the capital Nassau on New Providence and Freeport on Grand Bahama that are well connected by flights from all major Indian metros. A day in M anasi Joshi Roy believes that instead of holidaying abroad, one must first explore the many beautiful facets of India—the different cities, culture and cuisine at each place, etc. Her recent trip with her husband Rohit Roy was to Kerala, which she confesses is by all means ‘God’s own Country’ as the Tourism Board claims, and while there, she spent a day at our very own Vivanta by Taj at Bekal, Kerala. This is your first visit to Vivanta by Taj, Bekal. What led to your impromptu visit there? A: I love travelling and exploring the various cities and towns of India. I’ve wanted to visit Kerala since long and the next day within an hour, we found ourselves in the State that the tourism 34 board claims is ‘God’s own Country’, a statement justified once you get there. We heard of Vivanta by Taj, Bekal through the posters and mailers at The Club and decided to stay there. What do you have to say about the look and feel of the resort? A: We loved the design and architecture of the resort. It has a very Balinese feel to it, but with an Indian touch. We stayed in a beautiful villa with a plunge pool; an outdoor bathtub and shower area with a room that opened out onto the backwaters. We didn’t get to explore the place much, though, because of time constraints. How did you spend your 24 hours at Vivanta? A: We were there for precisely 24 hours and they have undoubtedly been some of the best hours of my life. We felt at home the moment we reached there. What we really did was eating and swimming and walking by the backwaters. I wish we had more than 24 hours there because there’s so much to do. I am definitely going back there and hopefully, soon. I want to go kayaking, cycling and visit the Jiva Grande Spa too. I also loved the library a lot; especially the fireplace that makes the room so warm and cosy. Tell us about your dining experience at Vivanta. A: When I travel, I love to experience the local culture of that place, especially the cuisine. When you visit 5-star resorts and hotels, it’s very difficult to experience authentic local cuisine. But at Vivanta, it was different. We enjoyed the authentic Malabar fare put up by Chef Ashok and Television stars Rohit Roy and his wife Manasi Joshi Roy had recently visited the charming State of Kerala. We catch up with Manasi and ask her to give us a firsthand account of her experience of staying at the breathtaking Vivanta by Taj, Bekal. Text by Vaishali Fernandes Chef Mrinalini. I would give a 10/10 to our dining experience there. The prawns, especially, were excellent. We enjoyed spending time in the Bar, too. For breakfast, I especially loved the idiappams with egg. We got personalised attention from the staff there—they serve you with a smile and that itself makes your stay a happy one. Would you recommend Vivanta by Taj, Bekal, to others? A: I have already started recommending it to my friends and family and have publicised it through my blog. This one day trip was just a preview. I will plan a visit to the resort soon with my daughter. I would like to expose her to the beauty that Kerala holds and the wonderful hospitality experience at Vivanta by Taj, Bekal. L ying 16 kms south of Kasargod town, Bekal is a tranquil and beautiful place on the South-western tip of India. Due to time constraints Mansi Joshi Roy couldn’t explore the region much. So we decided to make her and everyone else’s job easier by telling you just what exactly you must go for when you touch base at Bekal. BACKWATERS: Kerala is synonymous with backwaters and should most certainly be on your checklist while planning a holiday to this state. Cruise along the backwaters of Valiyaparamba (four rivers that give way to this network of waterways) in your very own Kettuvallam or a traditional houseboat that offers a panoramic view of the coconut groves. To explore the cleanest backwater destination, BRDC has introduced boating facilities such as houseboats from Kottappuram (near Nileshwar) for the benefit of tourists. shutterstock.com BEKAL FORT: The Bekal fort, which is 300 years old, is of great historical and archaeological interest and runs into the sea with a fine bay. Spread over 40 acres of land and withstanding the rough waves, it is the largest fort in the state of Kerala. Take in the experience of water tanks with its flight of steps, the tunnel, magazine for keeping ammunition and the broad wide steps that lead to the Observation Tower. A tented camping accommodation is also provided at the coconut plantation at this beach area. CYCLING TOUR: One of the best ways to explore the 26 acres of land at Vivanta is to enjoy its beauty via a bicycle ride. Go slow to revel in its magical charm, speed up to feel the breeze or simply stop to savour the moment in quiet seclusion. You can cycle past the villas and rooms and ride along the backwaters, too, like a carefree child. KERELA SADHYA: No holiday is complete without enjoying the local, authentic taste of Kerala. Sadhya, or feast is a variety of vegetarian dishes traditionally served on a banana leaf. Prepared with farm fresh ingredients and vegetables, steamed red par-boiled rice, spiced lentil gravy preparations, yoghurt thinned out and seasoned with rai and curry leaves—it’s a perfect meal to savour here. At Vivanta, the Chef pays a sublime tribute to the ingenuity of the Kerala kitchen with the Sadhya. 35 GASTRONOMIA TASTE OF INDIA VALENTINE SPECIAL DELICIOUS DOSAS PUNJABI TADKA SING A SONG OF LOVE One of the more popular dishes from South India known for its simplicity and versatility, dosas find takers from across the country.
