Our instrumental music program has been running for many years, providing our children with opportunities to participate in solo and group performances, within the school and at functions outside the school. Our tutors are highly qualified, professional musicians who, as well as providing lessons to our children, regularly perform at outside of the school. This program is one part of the total Music Program at Preshil and supports the school’s deep commitment to supporting a vibrant and inclusive musical culture where musical expression is considered a right and an essential element in our community life. Set goals, practice, how parents can help at home. PERFORMANCES Open Stage is held on Wednesdays at 8.45 in The Kevin Borland Hall – an opportunity for anyone wanting to give performance a go. Simply come along on a Wednesday morning and give it a try! This is a very relaxed performance and ideal for trying out new songs and Fusce sagittis elit eu elit. SOIREES Soirees are open to the whole school and held in The Kevin Borland Hall 10 3 MUSIC LESSONS ENSEMBLES | ALL AGES Private tuition is offered at Preshil for a range of instruments. For a complete list of instrumental staff, please see page 6 and 7 of the booklet. WEDNESDAYS lunchtime The R & B Band Teacher: Ivan Rosa Location: BK Music Room Relax into the cool sounds of gospel, soul, electric blues and funk in this R&B Band inspired by our virtuoso Ivan Rosa. If you are a senior student and play drums, lead guitar, bass guitar, keys or sing come to the Music Room at Blackhall on Wednesday lunchtimes to investigate this unique opportunity. Learn to collaborate with others while exploring the classics of the R&B world creating your own sounds and vibe. Standard: at least 2 years of learning experience required to advanced. Scheduling of Lessons Lessons are held during the school day, are scheduled according to a rotating timetable and may occur during class time, lunchtime, before and after school. Changes to lesson times may occur owing to illness or professional activities of the teacher. Notice of any changes will be given. First Lesson You will be notified of your child’s first lesson either by phone or email. Please allow at least 10 days for confirmation from an instrumental teacher. Lessons begin in the second week of each term. Fees Individual Lessons Shared lessons: (2 students)* 30 min $40 $21 45 min $59 $36 60 min $77 $45 *Shared lessons may be available at the discretion of the teacher. PAYMENT OF FEES Music lessons will be billed each term. Fees are charged directly to your school account. Lessons commenced part way through a billing period will be charged on a pro-rata basis. All billing enquiries should be directed to the Business Manager, on 9816 7903 INSTRUMENT HIRE Preshil has a limited supply of instruments for hire. Any students interested in hiring instruments are advised to contact their teacher who can advise regarding recommended suppliers. INSTRUMENTS ON OFFER Cello, Clarinet, Bass (Double & Electric), Drum Kit, Flute, Guitar (Acoustic & Electric), Oboe, Percussion, Piano, Saxophone, Trombone, Trumpet, Viola, Violin and Voice. If you are interested some other instrument please let us know and Fusce sagittis elit eu einlit. we will explore the possibility of finding a teacher. 4 THURSDAYS 8.00am Ben's Big Band Teacher: Ben Carr Location: BK Music Room Think Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones and Louis Armstrong, if you love swing, jazz, funk and pop music then come and join Ben every Thursday at 8am. Combining the sounds of woodwind and brass instruments, this ensemble brings the big band to Preshil. Learn to work together to create harmonies and funky beats. Standard: All are welcome. THURSDAYS 8.30am Flying for a Prize Choir Teacher: Michelle Berner Location: Arlington The Kevin Borland Hall Love singing in the shower or in the car on the way to school? Then come and join our singing diva, Michelle Berner, on Thursdays at 8.30am in the Arlington hall. Explore classics and pop favorites with your friends. Investigate the world of singing through learning to sing in unison, solo and part harmonies. Standard: All are welcome. THURSDAYS lunchtime – Every alternate Thursday commencing February 5 The Brass Effect Teacher: Adrian Perger Location: BK Music Room Learning a brass instrument and want to create an even bigger sound and meet people? This ensemble is for you! Jazz, Pop, Funk, World Music, what ever your musical tastes Adrian will show you that being a brass player is the best fun. Join Adrian to explore the exciting world of brassy things! . Standard: Beginner to advanced welcome FRIDAYS 8.00am Strings Attached Teacher: Atilla Kuti Location: BK Music Room Investigate the endless possibilities of the string world through music spanning Amadeus Mozart to the Arctic Monkeys. Our resident gypsy violinist, Atilla Kuti, will challenge, inspire and lead you through a world of rockin string playing. Expand your skills, work as a team and have fun! Join Atilla on Fridays at 8am in the Music Room at Blackhall. Standard: must have completed AMEB Grade 2 or Suzuki Book 2 and beyond. 8 ENSEMBLES | ALL AGES Preshil hosts a number of ensembles for students. Some of these occur during the school day and others at either end of the day. MONDAYS 13.30pm Lightening Strikes Guitars Teacher: Lawrence Folvig Location: Arlington The Kevin Borland Hall Join Lawrence and his gang on Monday lunchtimes in the music room to explore pop, jazz and the guitar classics. Work as a team to learn to perform individual parts together as one. Standard: Calling all Arlington guitarists TUESDAYS 8.30am Arlington Strings Teacher: Karoline Kuti Location: Arlington The Kevin Borland Hall If you love having fun playing the violin, viola, cello or double bass and like hanging out with friends, then come along and join Arlington Strings on Fridays at 8.30am in the Arlington hall. Help me, Karoline Kuti, to explore some awesome string music while learning how to work as a team, expand your skills and have fun performing. However, Arlington students will be collected from class. In the 10s and 11s every effort will be made to encourage them to get themselves to music classes. If an Arlington child does not arrive on time the music teacher will go and get them. Students in Year 7 will be given one term to learn how to get themselves to their music lessons. Teachers will collect them from class if they do not arrive for the first term only. After this time, it is expected that all senior students will know their time and will be able to bring themselves. Students not arriving will be marked as absent and the lesson will be charged. MISSED LESSONS Make-up Lessons - Scheduled lessons that are missed without notifying the teacher will not be made up and will incur the regular fee. In cases where lessons have been missed due to school events (excursions, exams, camps etc), teacher illness or student issues (where sufficient notice has been received), teachers will make all possible attempts to provide a make-up lesson. Subject to availability this may require, in some cases, a longer lesson. In the event this is not possible, monies will be credited to your account for the following term. Absences - If it is known that a child will be absent from school for any reason, parents should contact School Reception on 9817 6135. Extra lessons - 8 lessons are provided each term. In some cases, teachers may provide extra lessons. If this is of interest to you, please contact your teacher to discuss this possibility. WEDNESDAYS 8.00am Pavement Choir Teacher: Michelle Berner Location: BK Music Room The incredibly groovy harmonies of the Pavement Choir need dedicated senior singers to collaborate with the wonderful Michelle Berner. Learn how to design harmonies, solo lines and descant melodies to create dynamic texture. Come and join your friends on a Wednesday at 8am in the Blackhall Music Room. Standard: All are welcome TERMINATION OF LESSONS WEDNESDAYS 13.30pm Song Club Teacher: Catherine Wood Location: Arlington Studio 1 Calling all Arlington students who love to arrange or compose their own songs. Come and join the amazing Catherine Wood every Wednesday for half of lunch and she will show you how. If you play piano, woodwind, brass, drums, or sing then this is for you! Standard: All are welcome MAKING A CHANGE 9 Once students are enrolled this is considered ongoing unless notification of termination is provided. When discontinuing lessons, 4 weeks (term time) written notice to the Business Manager is required. Please let us know the reasons for termination, as we want to ensure every child is happy and supported by the program. For this to occur there should be clear communication and understanding between teacher, parent and student. Parents will be notified of examination details, including fee and accompanist arrangements, if applicable. Discussions regarding examination eligibility should be made directly with the student’s instrumental teacher. TECHNOLOGY AND PRACTICE Handy practice tips and tricks are included each week in the blog and on the Music Tips and Tricks section of the Preshil website. This information will endeavour to inspire and help students to reach their full potential with their musical instrument. Current technological information, such as apps, will also be included in this 'tips and tricks' section of the blog. Please watch this space! This is also an opportunity to share Music Teacher and Student profiles, as well as event information and reviews which will be posted in the Music Blog weekly. 7
