MISSION and PURPOSE NEW RATTITUDE, Inc., a non-profit charitable corporation incorporated in 2008, is a 100% volunteer-operated, nationwide group dedicated to the rescue and adoption of abandoned, abused, neglected, sick, or unwanted Rat Terriers and Rat Terrier mixes. In private foster homes, the dogs are nurtured, socialized, trained, supported medically, and provided with professional veterinary care while we work diligently to find them new and permanent adoptive homes where they will be safe, loved, and properly and humanely cared for the rest of their lives. Each dog brought into our network receives a veterinary check, all required vaccinations, heartworm test and monthly preventative, and spay/neuter. Other medical care is sometimes necessary, such as treatment for mange, heartworm disease, gastrointestinal worms, infection, allergies, broken bones, or surgery to correct a variety of ailments. Each of our dogs is wormed, microchipped, and given a martingale collar, along with a collar tag printed with a unique ID number and our toll-free Lost Dog Hotline. New Rattitude is licensed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture, registered with the Georgia Secretary of State as a charitable organization, and recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as an approved 501(c)3 non-profit organization. MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD Dear Friends of New Rattitude, Through this annual report, we are pleased to present to you our 2015 year in review and to thank you for supporting our efforts in so many ways. In 2015, we rescued 162 homeless Rat Terriers. We would like to say it was our most successful year, but the truth is that we rescued 50 fewer dogs than we did in 2014. Why? It wasn’t for lack of monetary resources—our supporters were even more generous with their donations in 2015. And it certainly wasn’t because there were fewer Rat Terriers in need of rescue. Every single day New Rattitude is notified of Rat Terriers in need of rescue. We are alerted through our Facebook page, our website, our “urgent” email account, and through our network of volunteers. We have to turn so many deserving, adoptable Rat Terriers away and it’s for one reason—lack of available foster home spots. At the end of this report, you’ll see a flyer we created for the purpose of recruiting more foster families. New Rattitude makes fostering easy by providing training, full cost reimbursement, adoption support, and a wealth of other tools and resources to meet foster home needs. We encourage you to thoughtfully consider joining us in this deeply fulfilling lifesaving opportunity this year! Think of the dogs that can be rescued and go on to enjoy life as a loving family member because YOU stepped up to foster. In return, as a foster parent you will learn lessons in resilience, forgiveness, strength, courage, and unconditional love that will enrich your life and stay with you forever. Lend a paw— save a life. Help us save more Rat Terriers in 2016. With our sincere thanks, New Rattitude’s Board of Directors Jena Gammon President Stephanie Mathson Vice President 2015 ANNUAL REPORT Terry Beale Secretary Sue Kangas Treasurer PAGE 4 Debbie Collins Director Susan Beard Director Julee Allen Director NEW RATTITUDE, INC. 2015 ACCOMPLISHMENTS Our labor of love begins and ends with the heart and soul of New Rattitude—our volunteers. New Rattitude is a national organization, completely run by volunteers. Our network of foster homes is supported by a “staff” of other members who manage a variety of necessary tasks, including administration, application screening, fundraising, transportation coordination, publicity, technology, and so on. Outside of New Rattitude’s membership, we have another amazing support network of volunteers who help us drive dogs from shelters to foster homes, between foster homes, or from foster homes to adoptive homes, or assist with home visits to ensure our foster Rat Terriers are placed in safe and suitable environments. We are also grateful for those who support New Rattitude by contributing generously, participating in our fundraisers, and by spreading the word to let other dog lovers around the country know about New Rattitude and our efforts! Our volunteers are not paid, but they are priceless. We couldn’t carry out our mission without them. So, what did we collectively accomplish in 2015 through this network of dedicated volunteers and supporters? ! 162 Rat Terriers were rescued. ! 179 Rat Terriers were placed into loving adoptive homes. ! Cumulative rescues and adoptions since New Rattitude’s 2008 incorporation total 1,700 and 1,701 respectively! ! 21 new volunteers were approved for membership. ! 708 adoption applications were received and processed. ! New Rattitude’s Transport Team coordinated 20 transports, carrying 27 dogs. ! We paid for over 240 vaccinations, 94 spays and neuters, eight other surgical procedures, 14 dental cleanings/extractions, ten heartworm treatments, and numerous x-rays, blood panels, and other diagnostic and laboratory tests. 2015 ANNUAL REPORT PAGE 5 NEW RATTITUDE, INC. ! Through our Behavior Modification Team, we provided consultation and training counseling for 45 dogs with significant behavioral "issues"—29 adopted New Rattitude dogs and 16 New Rattitude foster dogs. And, with the help of a special fund, we were able to provide professional behavior consultations for three New Rattitude foster dogs. ! We held a successful online auction that grossed just under $3,000. ! We sponsored the 10th annual Rat Terrier Jamboree in Sweetwater, TN (see related story on page 15) and participated in several local adoption events throughout the country. These amazing achievements and more were made possible by all of you! Thank you for believing in our mission and for trusting in New Rattitude to carry it out. The New Rattitude Behavioral Modification Team offered training and behavior advice from their booth at the 2015 Rat Terrier Jamboree. 2015 ANNUAL REPORT PAGE 6 NEW RATTITUDE, INC. JUST LOOK AT THEM NOW! New Rattitude’s 2015 Canine Clinic Dogs Some of the dogs rescued by New Rattitude have severe illnesses or other serious medical issues that are much more costly than the money brought in by adoption fees. To help nurse these dogs through their medical needs so that they can eventually become healthy and adoptable, we find sponsors to help with the costs. Please enjoy these updates on former NR Canine Clinic dogs that have been placed in their forever loving homes! Gus (Washington) - Parvovirus Then: Gus was a young puppy who was diagnosed with a very powerful strain of parvovirus a few days after being rescued from a shelter. For several days, he hovered near death at an emergency veterinary hospital, getting the intensive treatment needed to save his life. Thanks to this specialty care, Gus recovered and started a happier, healthier phase of his life. He was adopted in July 2015. Now: Gus is a very social little guy with an equal love for people and other dogs. His new mom especially loves that Gus came crate trained. In fact, at night, Gus puts himself into the crate without her even having to ask. What a good boy! Gus and his mom took an obedience class together and Gus loved it! Dottie (Virginia) – Amputation Then: Dottie came into foster care with a prior fracture in her leg that had fused, causing mobility issues and hip stress. An x-ray revealed that the leg still contained four buckshot pellets and she also had torn ligaments in the joint. Dottie’s leg had to be amputated because it would never have healed properly. Dottie had surgery in late May 2015 and was adopted in June 2015. Now: Dottie, now known as Vikki, has her family completely head over heels in love with her. John and Cathy had lost two elderly dogs and had only intended to adopt one dog, but ended up adopting Vikki in addition to another dog a few weeks prior. The two dogs now enjoy sharing chairs, beds, laps, and much more. Vikki has recovered from her amputation with no difficulty. She really enjoys playing with her toys and taking long walks. 2015 ANNUAL REPORT PAGE 7 NEW RATTITUDE, INC. Hermes (Georgia) – Toxic Mushroom Poisoning Then: Hermes was poisoned from ingesting wild mushrooms that he found in the yard. By the time he arrived at the emergency center, he was weak, vomiting blood, and in very serious condition. For days, he was in intensive care fighting for his life while he received nutrition through a tube in his nose, plasma transfusions, and other medical treatment. Slowly but surely Hermes improved and was able to return to his foster home. Hermes was adopted in April 2015 by a family with a soft spot for senior dogs. Now: Hermes, nicknamed The Herminator, is the alpha in a house of three Dobermans. Why The Herminator? “He is a SPITFIRE.” After one day of not finding anything funny about his huge and fearsome-looking new siblings, Hermes decided to show his teeth and reorganize the pack—not by size, of course, but by grit. A couple of air snaps later it became clear who the boss was. Now they are best friends and play together nicely. Hermes is fourteen, but he doesn’t look or act his age. He is very playful and affectionate. A senior like Hermes is an example of how much joy a little old puppy can bring to those who give them a chance. Rigby (Washington) - Skin Infection Then: Poor Rigby entered foster care with an out of control skin infection. The vet diagnosed him with bacterial, fungal and yeast infections! It took many weeks of steroids and antibiotics to completely rid him of the infection. Rigby’s foster mom supplemented the vet care with a restricted diet, fish oil, coconut oil, and probiotics to maintain his skin health. Rigby was adopted in June 2015, with a healthy, shiny fur coat! Now: Rigby adjusted well to his new home, even getting friendly with the resident cat. His skin is looking wonderful. One of his favorite activities is doing “puzzle toys.” Britney (California) - Parvovirus Then: Britney was a tiny little 5-pound puppy who was rescued by New Rattitude, knowing she had parvovirus. No one else was willing to treat her for the virus, so rescue was her only chance. It was touch and go for the first few days as the veterinarian said she had one of the strongest cases they had seen. After five days in the hospital where she fought her way to recovery, Britney was released to her foster home. Soon she was playing like all young puppies should be able to do! Britney was adopted in July 2015. 2015 ANNUAL REPORT PAGE 8 NEW RATTITUDE, INC. Now: Britney is the picture of health and adored by her new family. This is a fine example of love in action, with New Rattitude foster mom Jenny’s determination that Britney should have a chance for a future—and what a great future it turned out to be! Spruce (Georgia) – Cherry Eye, Bladder Stones Then: Spruce had cherry eye and a horrible urinary tract infection, for which he had surgery (both eyes) and was put on antibiotics. When he continued to have urinary problems, an ultrasound detected two large bladder stones and several smaller ones. Spruce had to undergo a second surgery to remove the stones. He was adopted in February 2015, and went to his adoptive home with a full set of instructions for how to minimize the chance of bladder stones developing in the future. Now: Spruce’s new mom, Regina, originally wanted to keep the name Spruce, but once she learned what this little guy had been through, she thought that he had been a real trooper, hence the name “Trooper.” Trooper’s soft eyes and sweet smile inspired New Rattitude to use his picture on the cover of the 2014 Annual Report, as well as our 2015 custom t-shirt! Aurora, Dobbes, Elsa, Johnny, Kate, Marjoram, Nemo, Noella, Sassafrass, and Thyme – Heartworm Disease Then: All ten of these ratties were successfully treated for heartworm disease in 2015. Standard treatment consists of multiple injections of an arsenic-based product to kill the adult heartworms, followed by a dose of oral Ivermection to kill the microfilaria, or baby heartworms. The treatment is very expensive and recovery is hard on the dog. As the worms begin to die, the dog must be kept confined for 4-6 weeks to avoid danger of pulmonary embolism. For more information on heartworm disease, visit New Rattitude’s Heartworm Library, and be sure to keep your dogs on monthly heartworm preventative! Now: Dobbes, Elsa, Johnny, Marjoram, Nemo, Sassafras, and Thyme were adopted in 2015. The others are available for adoption or finishing up the final stage of their heartworm treatment. 2015 ANNUAL REPORT PAGE 9 NEW RATTITUDE, INC. The 10th Annual Rat Terrier Jamboree, hosted by New Rattitude, was held on Friday and Saturday, April 24-25, 2015 in Sweetwater, Tennessee. In spite of a rain-threatening weather forecast, this muchanticipated annual event drew its usual enthusiastic crowd with approximately 80 people attending from 14 different states. And the weather was beautiful! Activities included agility competitions and terrier racing as well as other fun contests, a cookout and campfire on Friday night, and the legendary Jam raffle. But of course the main entertainment was the hundred or so Rat Terriers in attendance. It is quite a sight to watch them racing and chasing around the completely fenced Jam field, a swirl of black and white. One rather spectacular impromptu event this year might just become a new Jam tradition! A New Rattitude volunteer was demonstrating how her five Rat Terriers could “sing” or howl on cue. As they began their chorus, other ratties immediately began to join in until finally almost every dog on the Jam field (and a few people too) was howling together in a glorious and deafening cacophony. Group howl…it was Jam magic! Fundraising was a success, with the raffle, the Jam King and Queen contest, Saturday's lunch, and the ReTail Shop bringing in nearly $3,000 for New Rattitude. One thing is certain; Jamboree puts the "fun" in fundraising! Plans are being made for the 2016 Jamboree to be held April 29-30. Everyone who loves Rat Terriers is welcome! Visit www.RatTerrierJamboree.com for updates, photos, and information. Hope to see you there! 2015 ANNUAL REPORT PAGE 15 NEW RATTITUDE, INC.
