As such, the 1993 is the only Fox-body Cobra produced. Developed quickly with the use of off-the-shelf parts such as GT-40 cylinder heads from Ford Racing, the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra boasted 235 horsepower from its 5.0-liter V-8, as well as larger vented front and rear brakes. Available only with a Borg-Warner T-5 manual transmission, the SVT Cobra’s 0-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds offered a distinct performance advantage over the mainstream Mustang GT. To help set it apart, SVT added subtle exterior enhancements, including a restyled front valance with round fog lamps, unique 17-inch sevenspoke alloy wheels, a rear deck wing and special Cobra badging. To demonstrate Ford’s commitment to racing and showcase its newly formed Special Vehicle Team, a 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra R model was developed with a form-follows-function race-car mentality. Starting with a production SVT Mustang Cobra, anything that contributed to excess weight was eliminated including the back seat, radio, air-conditioning and sound-dampening material. The R model’s track-inspired handling came from heavy-duty MacPherson struts, Koni shocks on all four corners and the use of a front-strut tower brace. Intended for serious racers and available only in red, production of the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra R was limited to just 107 vehicles. The restyled Mustang body sported a more sculpted look that interpreted classic Mustang design cues. The interior was also revamped, featuring a driver-oriented twin-cockpit design and white-faced gauges. The 1994 Cobra’s 5.0-liter V-8 delivered 25 more horsepower than the mainstream Mustang GT, thanks to modifications to the cylinder heads, roller rockers, valve springs and upper intake manifold to increase the engine’s breathing ability. Other performance enhancements were made to improve handling, ride and braking, including the addition of 17x8-inch wheels and 13-inch front disc brakes. Later in 1994, the first SVT Mustang Cobra Convertible was offered. Available only in red, it was selected as the Official Pace Car for the 1994 Indianapolis 500. By 1995, the Ford Special Vehicle Team and its products were an unqualified success, so to further develop the Ford performance brand, all SVT models now wore special SVT exterior badging. This was the final year for Mustang’s venerable 5.0-liter V-8, long the preferred choice of Ford performance enthusiasts. Coupe versions of the Cobra were offered in Black, Red and White. To enhance the exclusivity of the Cobra convertible, which was available only in black, a removable hardtop option was offered. As the one and only year of the convertible hardtop experiment and with only 499 of the 1,003 droptops built leaving the factory with the optional hardtop, those cars are considered by some collectors to be among the most desirable SVT Cobras ever made. SVT replaced Cobras 5.0-liter V-8 with a special version of Ford’s 351 cubic-inch Windsor small-block, reengineered to produce 300 horsepower, and also installed a 20 gallon Fuel-Safe fuel cell. To handle the torque of the more powerful engine, a Tremec five-speed manual transmission was installed. Again, weight-savings was targeted, so there was no back seat, radio or air-conditioning not even fog lights, which were omitted to provide ducts for getting cool air onto the front brakes. Heavy-duty progressive-rate springs, thicker stabilizer bars and a front strut tower brace helped improve handling on the racetrack. Only 250 vehicles were built, available only in white, each with a unique center-tiered fiberglass hood tall enough to clear the engine and induction system. The major change for the 1996 SVT Mustang Cobra was the move to a brand-new, unique powertrain, a hand-assembled, all-aluminum dual overhead cam (DOHC) 4.6-liter V-8 rated at 305 horsepower. With its high-revving characteristics, the Modular engine was worlds apart from the venerable 5.0 small-block and ushered the SVT Cobra into a new era of modern performance. The engine change brought about a 65-hp increase over the previous year, good for a 0-60 mph time in 5.9 seconds, the quarter-mile in 13.9 and a top speed of 152 mph. To enhance the exclusivity of the Cobra Coupe, a unique high-tech, color-shifting paint dubbed “Mystic” was offered, with a one-time run of just 2,000 “Mystic” Coupes produced. Engine Type: 90-degree, OHV Windsor V-8 Displacement: 5.8L / 351 CID Horsepower: 300 hp @ 4800 rpm Torque: 365 lbs.-ft. @ 3750 rpm Bore x Stroke: 4.0 in. x 3.0 in. Pacific Green was added as a color option. As a running mid-year change, the Cobra’s engine signature sticker was replaced with a more durable metallic plate, with signatures of the two-man engine assembly team die-stamped onto the SVT engine plate. The 1998 SVT Mustang Cobra debuted with minor cosmetic changes over the previous year. A new, 17-inch five-spoke alloy wheel design, similar to the popular 1995 Cobra R style, better exposed the Cobra’s 13.0-inch vented front disc brakes. Two mid-year color options were added: Bright Atlantic Blue and Canary Yellow Clearcoat. The clock pad was removed from the dashboard, and dual cupholders were included for added convenience. The big news for the 1999 SVT Mustang Cobra was a 15-horsepower performance gain, thanks to the use of new “tumble port” cylinder heads for better air flow and a coil-on-plug ignition system. Also new was a unique independent rear suspension (IRS) system, along with a move to 13-inch Brembo disc brakes, ABS and standard all-speed traction control. Leather seating surfaces also became standard, available in either Medium Parchment or Dark Charcoal. A new exterior color option, Electric Green Clearcoat Metallic, was included in the changes for 1999. The 2000 SVT Mustang Cobra R debuted as the fastest factory Mustang ever produced. Its SVTdeveloped, naturally aspirated 5.4-liter V-8 produced 385 horsepower, good for 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds, the quarter-mile in 13.2 and a 170-mph top speed. As a true, lightweight R-model, it also had track-capable brakes, able to make a full stop from 60 mph in just 127 feet. Like all SVT Cobra Rs before it, the 2000 R came stripped of any stock feature not needed for track use or that would add excess weight. Recaro racing seats, side-exit dual exhaust, a front air splitter and a high-mount rear wing hinted of the car’s superb stability and handling capabilities. Just 300 units were made, available only in Performance Red Clearcoat. Ebony and Alloy stripes entered the lineup and the much sought-after “Red Stripe Package” cars from late-2007 carried over into 2008, but only in limited numbers and only on Black or White convertibles. Optional HID headlights – a Mustang first – also graced the 2008 GT500. The “King of the Road” version of the GT500 was released as a limited-edition model that began life as a Shelby GT500 Mustang, which was shipped to the Shelby Automobiles facility in Las Vegas, where upfitting to KR status was performed before being shipped to the selling dealer. The Ford SVT-engineered 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 was enhanced with a Ford Racing Power Upgrade Pack to boost horsepower to 540 and torque to 510 foot-pounds. The added power came via revised ignition and air/fuel calibration, a throaty Ford Racing-inspired dual exhaust and a cold-air intake system that was specially designed to mate perfectly against the KR’s unique carbon-fiber hood. Color/stripe combos also held fast, though fans of the “Red Stripe Package” could once again select a white or black coupe as well as a convertible. By year’s end, nearly 23,000 GT500s were built between the 2007 and 2009 model years. The entire Mustang line received a redesigned body for the 2010 model year, and the GT500 got a special version all its own that concentrated on the hood, nose and grille. Powertrain improvements used on the 2008-09 GT500KR found their way onto the 2010 GT500, as the horsepower level now matched the 540 found in “King of the Road” GT500s. SVT suspension upgrades, including stiffer springs, served to improve ride and handling both on the road and at the track. Also new for 2011 was the “SVT Performance Package,” which provided stiffer springs and damper rates, a 3.73:1 rear axle ratio and suspension upgrades for sharper handling. Perhaps most surprising was that the more powerful V-8 was also more fuel efficient. The EPA rating of 15 mpg city and 23 mpg highway made the 2011 version the first modern GT500 to avoid the federal gas-guzzler tax. New for 2012 was the addition of the Mustang’s new selectable steering system that allows drivers to choose up to three different settings: “Sport” mode, “Comfort” mode, and “Standard” mode for normal everyday driving. Another new electronics feature was the addition of next-generation SYNC® that includes AppLink, as well as voice-activated enhanced navigation for a complete hands-free operation.
