President’s Message
January Contest Winners
Greetings,
We started off the New Year with a bang
last month. A packed house awaited the
first meeting of the year. 2016 is going to
be a good one.
Now that the year is getting underway,
time to get some serious modeling in.
Following on the intro to LEDs and sound
for your models discussion I held last
month, the links to where you can
purchase some of the items are further
back in the Corsair. Let there be light!
Craig Brown is going to give a talk on
using metalizer on models. Since we
have all seen his amazing work, I strongly
urge you to stick around and hear what he
has to say.
Not one to really advertise Plastic
Ponderings, I think you will enjoy this
issue especially if you were breathing in
the 80s. Lots of good memories in store
for your reading pleasure.
A few events on tap in the coming weeks.
Make sure you check out all the details on
pages 12-13. More info will be at this
month’s meeting.
See you Tuesday.
You keep building, Phoenix!

Italeri Acrylic Paints
By Jim Pearsall
When Steve Collins asked for volunteers to try Italeri’s new acrylic paints, I
jumped right in there. I was doing a Monogram battleship as the USS Wisconsin, and I needed something to use as Deck Tan and Battleship Gray.
The paints come in 20milliliter bottles with a snap open cap which allows you to
take a small amount of paint from the top, which is great for doing fine work.
You can also unscrew the lid and get a big dollop for painting a large area. The
snap cap makes it very difficult to spill the paint, a plus when working with several colors at once.
I used the 30257 Flat Wood for the battleship deck and the 36270 Gray for the
rest of the ship. I brush painted most of the ship, as I found the multiple decks
and corners just too difficult to consider masking and airbrushing. I did airbrush
the stacks, and had a problem with the paint cracking as it dried. I now know I
should have added a retarder to make the paint dry slower. A drop of liquid
soap will work as a retarder.
Experience with other acrylics tells me that if you’re going to spray them, be
sure to clean the plastic parts, as the acryls don’t stick if there’s any mold release present on the parts.
The paints matched my color chips for the FS numbers indicated.
Brush painting was easy, the paint was thick enough to cover nicely with one application. If I was using a color for more than 5 minutes or so, it was necessary
to clean the brush, as the paint dried up inside the bristles. A quick dip in Windex, followed by drying on a paper towel fixed this. The same was true of cleaning the brush or airbrush, Windex worked marvelously.
I used the 36622 Flat Gull Gray on the interior of an Encore 1/48 A-37. The
paint dried nicely and played well with the other paints I used in the cockpit and
on the seats, which included Testors acrylic hull red, Floquil lacquer grimy black
and Model Master enamel olive drab.
Recommended.

1/72 Lifelike Decals Consolidated B
B--24 Liberator Pt.2
By Floyd Werner Jr.
More B-24 nose art and this time they are
from all over the world. B-24s are a natural
canvas for unit artists. It doesn’t matter where
in the world the aircraft was stationed it just
needed some down time for it to become
adorned with pinup nose art.
The instructions are the typical Lifelike stating
what is known and what is based on an educated guess. I like this approach which allows
the modeler to decide.
The instructions are printed on two single sided A4 sheets in full color. A little history is included in each description. The full color side
profiles are very nice and make choosing a
marking option difficult.
The decals themselves are printed by Cartograf and Microscale on four small sheets that
include all the markings you will need. Also a
nice touch is the inclusion of 1/72nd decals for the bombs. The Cartograf sheet does
the actual nose art with their fine gradient. The colors are in perfect register and
opaque. The stuff that Cartograf has become known for. The Microscale sheets has
the unit and national markings. Another nice thing is the inclusion of the black de-ice
boots.
The first aircraft is probably my favorite aircraft of the sheet. It is “Double Trouble "of
the 467BG. This aircraft was on an Imperial War Museum poster in full color. Camouflaged in Olive Drab and Neutral Grey with black de-ice boots this aircraft sports a
red and diagonal white stripe on the vertical tail. The unit code and national markings
are greyed out. The “Double Trouble” nose art is a Vargas pinup with a Seagrem’s
whiskey bottle behind her.
A Desert scheme of sand and Neutral Grey are the main draw of the second aircraft.
‘Lil De-icer’ has a beautiful woman and very unique mission markings, a heart. This B
-24D is typical of the ‘Strawberry Bitch’ or ‘Lady be Good’. The tail markings add a little bit of color.

B-24 Decals cont’d.
The photo ship version of the B-24, the F-7A, displays a huge nude on the left side.
The aircraft was painted in Olive Drab over Neutral Grey. The mission markings are
rather unique as well, a camera over palm trees. The de-ice boots are silver. The
camera windows are actually supplied as decals. This is a rather unique approach but
in this scale I’m sure it will be effective.
The final aircraft is a natural metal aircraft from Okinawa in 1945. This aircraft has
nose art on both sides. On the left side is the pinup girl with “Shy-Chi Baby” and on
the right was Donald Duck. There are plenty of mission markings, 97 to be exact. The
lion head on the tail with blue rudder offers a unique looking aircraft. There are markings that can be added post-VJ day.
The variety of markings and theaters of operation along with the pinup nose art makes
this another winner from Lifelike. Colorful Cartograf and Microscale decals and colorful instructions make this a natural sheet for your Hasegawa/ Minicraft/ Academy or
Eduard kits.
Highly recommended

Maker Fest 2016
Once again, it is time for IPMS Phoenix’s second annual participation in the City of Mesa’s Maker Fest.
It is a collaborative one-day festival and community of makers
seeking to achieve the vision of a connected community, empowered by creativity. The Southwest Maker Fest (SWMF) mission is
to celebrate, engage, and inspire the maker in each of us.
With all the success of last year’s involvement, IPMS Phoenix will
once again be looking for volunteers for the day. In addition, we
will be needing some personal equipment like tables and chairs to
man the booth.

Secretary’s Sound Off
By Hal Sanguinetti
The January meeting was called to order at 7:07 by President Mike Pabis.
Our guests for this evening were welcomed; there were 5 of them this
evening.
Officer reports: Craig Pierce thanked everyone for participating in the raffle,
both buying and donating. He gave some tips on donating kits for the raffle,
and a few other suggestions, and listed the kits that were available for tonight’s raffle. Tim Bongard reminded us that dues are due tonight; we’re in
good shape financially. Hal read the minutes. Steve Collins reported that
Larry Mann had passed away recently. Because of the loss of the IPMS data base recently, IPMS members are advised to closely monitor their personal information. Mike Pabis stated that hereafter the member at large will
be acting as a liaison with all the new members; if you’re new, be sure to
get with him and let him (and the club) welcome and get you involved with
our club. Ethan reported that Facebook continues to grow, with over 100
people following it regularly. Rick Ballard mentioned that tonight’s contest is
Vietnam, and reiterated the importance of signing in when entering models.
He discussed the Novice category and what it entailed. Next month is SciFi Fantasy.
Be sure to sign the sign-in sheet for attendance.
Old Business: Mike Mackowski talked about the very successful Christmas
party. Charles Swanson won the Modeler’s Jeopardy. Gary Thomas won
Modeler of the Year; Rookie of the Year was Curtis Chandler; Member of
the Year was Chuck Ludwig, as was the Hall of Fame award. Mike also
mentioned to be sure to get your membership up to date.
Mike Mackowski discussed the possibility of doing a Regional for 2016, and
outlined the negative factors of doing it as part of Modelzona. A decision
must be made by meeting time next month (February). Suggestions are

PLASTIC PONDERINGS
BY MIKE PABIS
I Love the 80s – Scale Modeling Edition
Over a decade ago, some of you may have watched the VH1 series I Love the 80’s. It
was a fun flashback to all the different historical and pop culture items related to the
best decade around. Throw in some comedians to add commentary and it really was a
fun and funny way to reflect back on the 80s.
So why does this matter to column about scale modeling? Well, because we are also
having a I Love the 80’s version of our own here. Just with models.
Maybe it was because I was young and impressionable in the 80s but it really was the
best decade to grow up in. The toys were better, cartoons were better and movies had
scripts and weren’t remakes. Life was simpler. Models were easy to buy, cheap to buy
and located everywhere. Ah, the good old days.
But I digress. Why bring up the 80s as it relates to modeling? Because the 80s are
coming back that is why!
Maybe you have missed it over the last few years but 80s models are making a return
to life via repops or better yet, with all new molds. Builders long for some kits and the
prices on eBay are a testament to that. However, there are a few companies that are
obliging model consumers by giving us what we want from the 80s.
Enter Aoshima.
They earn a gold medal, 1984 style, for their participation in returning the 80s models
to glory. Why, three words (four if you count “and”): Airwolf and Blue Thunder. Drop
the mic. They win. Case closed. We are good from here on out.
Outside of Star Wars and a few other major movies of the decades which had models
in them or made from them, these two helicopters captured the attention and
imagination of a television and movie viewing decade. Plus they were just really cool.
Lets start off with the World Record Holder for Best Television Vehicle EVER!!!!! At this
point, I fully expect you to start humming the theme song in your head. If you haven’t,
start now. It was a bullet proof helicopter, armed to the teeth which could fly
supersonic. Plus it had Jan Michael Vincent and Ernest Borgnine in it. What part of
this wasn’t cool?
Back in the day, AMT made an Airwolf kit. Until recently, it was the only game in town.
Sure it was fine for the olden days but it no longer holds up to today’s standard. But it
THE CORSAIR
PAGE 22
FEBRUARY 2016
Plastic Ponderings Cont.
was all you could build. That Bell 222 looked sweet in the gloss gunmetal paint job
(side note, as a kid, you darn near had to change your shorts when you saw it at the
MCAS El Toro airshow or flying over Orange County on the way to a television shoot).
Over the last couple of years, Aoshima has released new versions of this
monumentally historic helicopter kit. Gone are the soft details, poor fit and unexciting
features. In are crisp details, tight fits and a brilliant kit that will make you want to fly
your newly completed creation around the room pretending you are Stringfellow Hawk.
In fact, Aoshima released a few versions. The ultimate had PE details and extras to
make it that much sweeter. Now you can build a new 1/48 model of Airwolf. And if you
know the right person, you may be able to get a copy of the theme song to wire some
sound to it (ahem, ahem, hint,
hint).
So after this gold medal
performance, what is Aoshima
left to do? Win the silver of
course.
Didn’t everyone go see the blue
LA police helicopter in 1983
tricked out with a Gatling gun,
thermal vision and all the other
bells and whistles a pilot could
hope for? That is right, Blue
Thunder. The name should give you shivers, like when someone says “Mufasa.”
Watching Roy Sheider zip through LA in that sweet ride made for good movie viewing
in 1983. In fact, I even had the toy of it. BTW, GI Joe figures preferred riding in Blue
Thunder over the standard GI JOE Cobra. Scientific fact.
Now, the old Monogram kit can still be found on eBay like Airwolf. However, prices go
for about what a new Tamiya kit can go for. Yikes. All that for a poorly fitting, soft
molded kit with bad clear parts. But not anymore!!!
Aoshima seems to have nailed it again when they made a newly modeled 1/48 Blue
Thunder. The detail is superb. The fit seems nice without needing much filler. Plus,
clear parts are actually clear. Once you take care of one of these bad boys you can
channel your inner Daniel Stern and be the copilot to the coolest police helicopter
around.
These new models of 80s stuff is starting to make Aoshima look like the USA in the 84
Olympics. So who will win the Bronze?
THE CORSAIR
FEBRUARY 2016
PAGE 23
Plastic Ponderings Cont.
Well, twice in the 80s a movie
series released two episodes in a
trilogy which deeply impacted
model making. Perhaps you have
heard of them, Empire Strikes
Back and Return of the Jedi. They
are art films so not many may have
seen them. Anyway, they featured
real models in the movies and low
and behold, MPC released a whole
bunch of different kits from three
movies. They looked great and
frankly they were the only game in
town for a long time. However, the fit was never the best.
The subsequent prequels and Clone Wars series have seen Revell release new
versions. They are a good step but not a revolutionary leap. The release of The Force
Awakens means more new kits to build.
However, Bandai and Fine Molds to the rescue. Any they take the bronze for their
efforts. Why? Because they nailed it with incredibly detailed kits for many of the
Starfighters in the Star Wars universe. These kits go together so nicely and the
detailing is so superb, you could build them and George Lucas would use them in a
movie. I meant 1970s-1980s George Lucas. Not the George Lucas form the prequels.
We are still waiting for aliens to return the real George.
So, we are in the golden age of modeling. Not just because we are able to get the best
possible kits with nearly all the possible options to build nearly anything we want, but
because there is more. Manufacturers are realizing there are some nice markets that
need to be served. If that means
redoing past mistakes to make
people happy, then so be it. So the
golden age of modeling now
includes kits that over halfway to
their golden birthday.
With that said, it is time to crank up
some Duran Duran, The Bangles
and Bobby McFarrin while busting
out a new Airwolf or other 1980s
kit. Later dude.
