The death rate from breast cancer has decreased by almost 42% since 1986. However, to date, breast cancer is the second leading cause of death by cancer in women. It is for this reason that this year we launched a unique initiative, La Virée Rose, that allowed us to meet thousands of women across Quebec, in their communities. This initiative is much more than just an awareness-raising campaign. La Virée Rose invites women from Quebec to take time for themselves, for their health and to come speak with ambassadors specially trained by the Foundation. This campaign supports our profound conviction that all women can and should take their breast health into their own hands. Enjoy the reading!” Chief Executive Officer of the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation “My 8-year involvement with the Foundation has given me the opportunity to meet thousands of women who helped me realize that all of us, including me, have questions and concerns regarding breast cancer. The RV has been specifically designed to allow women in Quebec to receive answers to their questions. I am truly extremely proud of the Foundation team. La Virée Rose is a very concrete way of raising awareness and ensuring that women are screened as early as possible. We can’t say it often enough: we must take action to stay in good health!” Spokesperson of the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation 2 2014 FINAL REPORT Message from the Minister of Health and Social Services and the Minister for Rehabilitation, Youth Protection and Public Health Each year in Quebec, a great number of women are diagnosed with breast cancer. They battle this disease with courage and determination. Luckily, progress made in recent decades has led to a significant drop in the death rate by this cancer. Nevertheless, we must continue to fight as much remains to be done to save the lives of as many women as possible affected by this disease. We’d like to express our gratitude to the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation for its participation in the collective efforts made against this disease that strikes one out of every nine women. The Foundation is a long-time major partner of our health and social services network that has provided invaluable support to us all throughout the years. Apart from making a significant contribution to the field of research, the Foundation has also taken multiple initiatives to raise funds, to support women suffering from cancer and their families, and to create awareness about the risks associated with detecting the disease in its later stages. It is for this reason in fact that many women volunteered in La Virée Rose, an event that took place from June to October 2014, throughout the province of Quebec. We’d like to congratulate the team that criss-crossed the province for twenty-one weeks, meeting with women from all regions to answer their questions and address their concerns regarding breast cancer. It is through such original and rallying initiatives that we’ll be in a better position to fight this disease, mainly by advocating prevention and early detection. On behalf of all the people in Quebec, we would like to give a warm thank you to the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation and to all the devoted collaborators of La Virée Rose! Gaétan Barrette Minister of Health and Social Services Lucie Charlebois Minister for Rehabilitation, Youth Protection and Public Health 2014 FINAL REPORT 3 Introduction La Virée Rose: A New Initiative by the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation In 2014, an estimated 6,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer and an estimated 1,350 women died from it in 2014; 1 out of every 9 women may get breast cancer during her lifetime 1 out of every 30 women may die from it The Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation firmly believes that early detection of breast cancer increases the chances of survival and improves the quality of life. It is of the utmost importance for us that women be aware that they can take their breast health into their own hands and that adopting a healthy lifestyle stacks the odds in their favour. We know that only 22% of women observe their breasts on a regular basis. To help all women take action and take their breast health into their own hands, the Foundation decided to meet women from the four corners of the province through an educational and awareness-raising tour: La Virée Rose. 4 2014 FINAL REPORT What is La Virée Rose? La Virée Rose of the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation is the most important educational and awareness-raising initiative concerning breast health, in Quebec. It is entirely devoted to helping women take their breast health into their own hands, because it’s simple, and they can do it. La Virée Rose is an initiative implemented through a fully outfitted, 43-foot, pink, recreational vehicle that criss-crossed the province for 21 weeks, from June to October 2014. The Foundation invited thousands of men and women, from all parts of the province, to come on board the RV and live an informative, interactive and fun experience to raise their awareness on the importance of breast observation. Educational material specifically designed for La Virée Rose was given to visitors to provide them with the information and tools needed to actively take their breast health into their own hands. La Virée Rose was also a unique opportunity for women to speak with the Foundation’s specially trained ambassadors regarding their fears and concerns, and to share their experiences as well as obtain answers to their questions. 2014 FINAL REPORT 5 The information disclosed inside the RV is simple and easy to understand. Several interactive and educational areas were set up to accomplish this. First, a game-questionnaire on breast cancer and breast observation was elaborated to allow RV visitors to put their own knowledge to the test. Furthermore, warning signs of breast cancer were concretely illustrated on an “educational wall”, placed at their disposal. Visitors were also able to watch a video which demystifies breast observation and gives practical advice. A photo booth was set up inside the RV, at the end of the journey, to allow visitors to share their motivation to take their breast health into their own hands. 6 2014 FINAL REPORT Personalized badges marked with each person’s motivation were also available on site. To conclude the experience on a note of commitment to take their breast health into their own hands, participants were asked to put their signature on the RV. Thousands of signatures representing as many messages of hope, love and encouragement were put on the RV. I’m very impressed by the initiative La Virée Rose and its quality. I have breast cancer and will undergo a mastectomy next week. This project helps me to feel supported during my ordeal. Chantale, 48, Drummondville 2014 FINAL REPORT 7 Figures that count! La Virée Rose made it possible for women to improve their ability to do a breast observation by 46% and to do so more often. Thanks to the information available on board the RV, 60 women were asked to see their doctor after recognizing a potential sign of breast cancer. 9 Partnerships Breast Health: This Cause is Close to our Hearts! La Virée Rose owes its success to team work and concerted efforts. The involvement and contribution of all partners were indispensable throughout the course of this project. The synergy among all partners and the Foundation established a powerful communication channel that enabled La Virée Rose to be exposed and to exert its influence in every part of Quebec. 10 2014 FINAL REPORT On-field Activation of La Virée Rose The Partners’ involvement made it possible for the Foundation to turn La Virée Rose into an enormous success. Without their participation, the project could simply not have been realized. As for the partners, their association with La Virée Rose allowed them to reach their target market and react appropriately to position their respective brands. Partners were also privileged to exchange views while interacting with women on the RV’s activation site. The visit by La Virée Rose was supported by complementary activities, hosted by the tour’s partners, who came to lend support to the messages as well as to enhance the experience and make it more pleasant. Pharmaprix was thus able to make known and expose its program FEMMES. This program is proof of their commitment to improve the health of Canadian women in body, mind and spirit. Thanks to this program, Pharmaprix stands out among the competition by associating itself to an initiative never accomplished before in Quebec, which had a direct impact on women’s health. Moreover, the involvement and mobilization of employees and pharmacistowners during the activations made it possible to establish a direct contact with the visitors (existing and potential customers). Being on site allowed them to have a personalized approach with each of the women there. In particular, through the game “Mississippi”, women learned more about healthy lifestyles. They also received promotional gifts that were very much appreciated. It was also an opportunity to generate additional revenue by handing out discount coupons on the spot, and an opportunity to gather interesting information for their communication tools. 12 2014 FINAL REPORT CIBC, Collaborative Partner La Virée Rose allowed the CIBC to strengthen its position as a corporate citizen actively involved in its community, particularly with regards to the fight against breast cancer. The CIBC employees were able to show their commitment towards the cause, to their target clientele, during experiential activations taking place around the RV and at a relational level at their branches. The game “Plinko” in the CIBC colors was also specifically designed for La Virée Rose to promote contact between the partner and the visitors on site. Each participant took home a promotional item as a souvenir of his presence on the RV. I had the opportunity to visit the RV yesterday, and the ambassador who helped me gave me a lot of information on breast cancer. I tip my hat to the entire team! Sylvie, 62, Montréal 2014 FINAL REPORT 13 La Virée Rose is also supported by Health Partners! The Foundation is proud to have been able once again to count on its important partners in the field of health. 4 groupings of influential professionals supported the initiative: • OIIQ – Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec • OPQ – Ordre des pharmaciens du Québec • OTIMROEPMQ – Ordre des technologues en imagerie médicale, en radio-oncologie et en électrophysiologie médicale du Québec • FMSQ – Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec Several HSSC – Health and Social Service Centres as well as hospitals collaborated to welcome La Virée Rose and showed their support and enthusiasm towards this important initiative. 14 2014 FINAL REPORT Communications Campaign We created a communications campaign for La Virée Rose in order to come in contact with women from all parts of Quebec. Communication tools, public relations, and print as well as Web promotional campaigns, were used to encourage people to take their breast health into their own hands. Before getting on board, I thought that only women who were 40 years and over could get breast cancer! I’m very happy to have visited the RV! Caroline, 27, Neuville 2014 FINAL REPORT 15 Communication Tools We designed several visual tools to expose La Virée Rose through all communications. In order to do so, we developed a radio campaign in collaboration with our media partner Rouge FM. Fifteen-second messages were broadcasted on several of their channels during the day of the event itself. We also booked advertising space in weekly papers in the regions where the tour made a stop. Lucy, 49, Matane 2014 FINAL REPORT 17 Web The microsite pinktourqc.org was developed to provide an information platform where internet users could go to find quick answers to their questions on La Virée Rose and its itinerary throughout the province. A detailed timetable of the tour was provided along with a description of the project. Overall, about 30,000 people consulted the microsite. The microsite for La Virée Rose redirected its visitors to the breastobservation.org for them to learn more about breast health and about the campaign #IDOIT. About 10,000 people visited this microsite during La Virée Rose tour, which represents a 43% increase over the previous year, during the same period. About 50 mass e-mailings, sorted by region, were sent to people listed in the Foundation’s database, asking them to participate in La Virée Rose, in their region. These e-mailings allowed us to personalize our approach. "For you, my beloved friend! I love you with all my heart." 18 2014 FINAL REPORT Media Relations La Virée Rose was an ideal opportunity for the Foundation to position itself throughout the province as a leader and instrument of change in matters concerning breast health, and to provide exposure for its partners. A communication plan was created to bring this innovative project to as many women as possible and raise awareness among them on the importance of adopting healthy breast care habits. Below, are the different actions put in place to implement a media relations plan: Official launch of La Virée Rose To launch La Virée Rose with a bang, a press conference was held on June 9th 2014 to unveil the RV to the National Medias for the first time. The Chief Executive Officer of the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation, Angèle Dubeau Francine Cléroux, the spokesperson for the Foundation, Mitsou Gélinas, a survivor, the main partners for the project and representatives from the Direction québécoise de cancérologie, the Ordre des pharmaciens du Québec and the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec, spoke during the event that took place at the Clock Tower Quay at the Old Port of Montreal. 2014 FINAL REPORT 19 Launch with the “Pink Bloggers” This past year, the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation has built solid relations with several “Pink Bloggers” who are concerned by the cause as well as interested to learn about new initiatives and share them through their respective social networks. They notably participated massively in the #IDOIT campaign, some pictures of which were shown in the RV. It was therefore perfectly natural to organize a fringe activity within the launch of La Virée Rose devoted exclusively to them. The bloggers were thus invited to happy hour at Boris Bistro on the night of June 9th 2014, where they obtained further information on the initiative and enjoyed a VIP visit of the RV together with the representatives of the Foundation and its partners. Regional Press Operations In order to ensure optimal exposure of the Foundation and its partners in all parts of the province, targeted press operations were carried out in two stages at every stop of La Virée Rose. Personalized invitations were sent to local media followed by phone reminders made to them before each visit of La Virée Rose to the region. A press release in the form of an assessment was sent to the media, following the RV stop in the region, to create additional media coverage after the event. In all, more than a hundred different press operations were carried out from June to October 2014. Press Briefings To create greater impact at a tour stop made in large urban centres in the presence of major media, an official press briefing was organized with the Foundation’s spokesperson, the partners, the local dignitaries and a woman from the region who either suffered or had recovered from cancer. • Quebec: June 14 • Val-d’Or: July 15 • Chicoutimi: June 22 • Sherbrooke: July 18 • Trois-Rivières: July 3 • Rimouski: July 22 • Gatineau: July 13 20 2014 FINAL REPORT Impressive Results! The total media coverage of La Virée Rose, a first-time initiative on breast health in the province of Quebec, comes to 46,968,882 prints. The overall number of press operations by La Virée Rose made it possible to receive 423 media mentions, throughout the province. This is a first-time record in 20 years for the Foundation! In all, there were: • 39 mentions on TV • 82 mentions on the radio • 81 mentions in the printed media • 214 mentions on the Web • 9 mentions on blogs The overall number of press operations of La Virée Rose made it possible to get media coverage in 14 regions across Quebec. With 73 media mentions, Montreal is the region that obtained the most coverage. Some figures: • On average, there were 29 mentions per region • 100% of the media coverage on La Virée Rose was either positive or neutral • 99% of the coverage mentioned at least one of the key messages • 67% of the coverage is illustrated with visuals from the RV • 58% of the coverage quotes at least one spokesperson 2014 FINAL REPORT 21 Government Relations La Virée Rose allowed us to meet thousands of women in their communities. This tour also gave us the opportunity to come in contact with several thought leaders and dignitaries in each of the visited regions. This allowed us to expose the message of awareness throughout the province, making breast health a priority! We are very happy to have obtained the support of the Minister of Health, Gaétan Barrette, during each of these press briefings. Guy Hardy, MP for the district of St-François Denis Coderre, Mayor of the City of Montreal and ambassador for La Virée Rose Marc Carrière, MP for the district of Chapleau Sylvie Gaudreault, Town Councillor for the City of Saguenay, Mario Bolduc, Pharmacist-owner of the Pharmaprix Branch in Jonquière "In Jonquièr e, we do it! 22 2014 FINAL REPORT " Social Media The social media campaign of La Virée Rose was held on three platforms: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The strategy adopted focused on content sharing to enable the community to follow the RV, and at the same time emphasized the importance of the awareness-raising messages. To do this, a series of pictures showing the main events of the week were posted every Friday on Facebook, from the very beginning of the tour. The schedule for the upcoming week was also released each Sunday to let the Internet users know when La Virée Rose would make a stop in their region. Anecdotal content and sharing experiences on breast observation was promoted to raise women’s awareness and to appeal to them on a personal level. In 21 weeks, 75 publications were posted on the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation Facebook page. Thanks to the activities and interactions that took place during this period, the number of followers went up by 4,000, which represents a 42% increase over the previous year, for the same period. The Twitter platform made it possible to spread the factual content simultaneously and inform people on the stops made by the RV. Each day, the time and location of the next activations were released on the Web. During the tour of La Virée Rose we reached about 200 new followers. This increase represents 20% of our total followers on Twitter. And finally, the Foundation's Instagram account was used as an onboard diary for the ambassadors during the entire length of the tour. An average of 5 pictures per week were posted. 2014 FINAL REPORT 23 Conclusion Mission Accomplished – but the Battle is Not Over! What a success! Aside from the quantitative results, the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation is proud to have met with women from all parts of the province and to have made a real difference in the health of the women of Quebec. This educational and awareness-raising campaign, made possible through the generous support of our donors and partners, allowed us to inform, reassure, but especially encourage women to take action and to take their breast health into their own hands. During the entire length of the tour, we heard touching testimonials that allowed us to understand the importance of raising awareness and providing education about breast health for all women of Quebec. “I went there as director of the Sept-Iles CIBC Branch, that has been supporting this cause for years. However I had already been wondering about the physical change in my right nipple. When I walked into the RV, sure enough to my surprise, the first picture I saw of signs of breast cancer was exactly what I had myself. Following my visit, I took the necessary measures and underwent an operation a few weeks later to remove this mass.” Nancy Smith, Director of the Sept-Iles CIBC Branch 24 2014 FINAL REPORT Following her visit on board La Virée Rose’s RV, this woman met with her doctor, was diagnosed and then treated for breast cancer. The Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation would like to thank all its invaluable partners who contributed to the success of the La Virée Rose project. Montreal, June 9, 2014 – This morning, the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation unveiled La Virée Rose, the most important initiative for breast health awareness and education ever launched in Quebec. A large, fully outfitted RV will embark on a tour, criss-crossing Quebec for 20 weeks to encourage women to take care of their breast health. “La Virée Rose is an especially important initiative for us, because we’ll be meeting thousands of women in their home communities,” said Francine Cléroux, the Foundation’s CEO. “It goes well beyond a conventional awareness campaign. More than three-quarters of women do not regularly observe their breasts, either because they’re afraid or don’t know what to do, or because they’re convinced they can’t do it. This unique project will enable us to teach women how to be breast aware and establish a dialogue with them to spur them to action.” From June to October, La Virée Rose will visit more than 120 cities across the province. Ambassadors trained by the Foundation will be on hand at all times to respond to women’s questions and concerns and help them demystify the three breast health practices in an engaging and interactive way. "The Foundation is a very important partner for our healthcare network. Together, we continue to fight breast cancer with determination, through prevention and early detection. La Virée Rose is a fine example of how hard the Foundation works to reach people in their community, to make them aware of the risks associated with detecting the disease in its later stages," has made known Dr. Gaétan Barrette, Minister of Health and Social Services. This major project is made possible in part by the generosity of two principal partners: La Virée Rose is presented by Pharmaprix, in collaboration with CIBC. “As part of our commitment to the health and well-being of Canadians and our specific focus on women’s health through Pharmaprix FEMMES, La Virée Rose represents a significant opportunity for Pharmacist-owners affiliated with Pharmaprix to help educate and empower women across the province on their breast health, ” said Éric Bouchard, Senior Vice-President, Pharmaprix , presenting sponsor of La Virée Rose. “Pharmacists will offer advice on healthy habits throughout La Virée Rose and involve available staff nurses to manage detection issues and redirect patients to physicians when required.” “Breast cancer is a cause that is very close to our hearts at CIBC, because it impacts so many Canadians,” said Sylvain Vinet, Region Head of Eastern Canada. “CIBC is proud to join the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation as sponsor of La Virée Rose and help women take charge of their breast health, with the knowledge and tools that can lead to earlier detection and diagnosis – and may ultimately save lives. We are delighted that the tour will be making stops at a number of CIBC branches, giving our employees the opportunity to demonstrate our long-term commitment to this critical health issue.” One in nine women will receive a breast cancer diagnosis in her lifetime. In Quebec, 6,000 new cases will be detected this year alone. For this reason, La Virée Rose is a crucial initiative: early detection puts the odds in the patient’s favour. La Virée Rose will have its first official stop on June 9, from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, at the Pharmaprix located at 8371, Newman boulevard, in Lasalle borough.
