Annual Report - Life Essentials
Annual Report Fiscal year 2014 Life essentials Helping People & Transforming Lives June 2015 “The beauty of life does not depend on how happy you are, but how happy others can be because of you.” Author Unknown Mission Statement Life Essentials is a leader in providing professional, person-centered services for our community’s forgotten, those living with mental illness, those who are alone, and those who have no voice. Report to the Community Dear Friend of Life Essentials: Fiscal Year 2014 was a particularly exciting year for Life Essentials. On Wednesday, November 13, 2013, Life Essentials was given the Community Impact Award at the annual Access to Justice Awards Gala. The Community Impact Award, given by Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Advocates for Basic Legal Equality and the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project, recognizes advocacy and community initiatives for equal justice by individuals, organizations, and institutions in business and government. We were recognized for “showing extraordinary dedication to providing guardianships for some of the most vulnerable seniors in our community who cannot make decisions for themselves.” In addition to the pride we felt with the award, Life Essentials hosted the Ohio Guardianship Association’s Annual Education Conference in downtown Dayton. More than 80 volunteer, staff and attorney guardians from throughout Ohio attended. Speakers included Ursel McElroy Drake, Deputy Director Ohio Attorney General’s Crime Victim Section, Dr. Kara E. A. Marciani, and a distinguished panel of Probate Judges. On a day-to-day basis, we continued to provide services to more than 300 individuals needing guardianship services, which included more than 1,600 guardianship telephone calls, 1,100 professional meetings with doctors, social workers and court hearings. And we provided more than 3,100 hours assisting Chums program clients, who are living with mental illness, relieve symptoms of depression, loneliness, and isolation through participation in community events and other activities. With or without recognition, we want you to know that we continue to speak for those who can’t speak for themselves and work with all of our clients – both under guardianship and those still living independently - to have the best quality of life available to them. By protecting them or by offering new skills, our greatest reward comes from knowing that we are ensuring our community’s frail and forgotten have a champion!
