For several years in succession, the statistics have shown
that Dresden is the German city with the highest birth rate
– yet further evidence of its youth and vibrancy. So it’s not
only the tourist figures that keep going up but also the
number of inhabitants.
What makes Dresden so attractive to younger people?
We explore this question in detail in our June edition of

Dresden has various special attractions for nocturnal types: you can sit around a romantic campfire by the river, watch open air cinema under the stars, zoom along the city streets on inline
skates, party on the banks of the Elbe or take a look behind the scenes at various research
­institutes during the Dresden Long Night of Science.
Our recommendations
44 There are five sites on the banks of the Elbe where camp fires may be lit. You can apply to the
Umweltamt (Environment Department) for a permit any time from four weeks before the
planned date. A fee of €10.00 is payable. In addition, there are eleven barbecue areas next to the
Elbe and in various parks around the city. They are clearly signposted and can be used free of
charge. You will find a list of these sites and the relevant contact details on the website below.
44 Night skating in Dresden: A horde of good-humoured people skate through the night-time streets
to the sound of music. The starting gun fires at 9pm every second Friday from late April to September.
The start and finish point is the half-pipe on Lingnerallee adjacent to Dresden Town Hall.
44 There are two Elbeside beaches where you can sip cocktails in an unusual setting: Dresden’s
Citybeach boasts white sand, 16 volleyball courts, table tennis and XXL sunbeds; on Purobeach,
guests can relax under palm trees, take a dip in the pool or dance until midnight and beyond.
44 Filmnächte am Elbufer (Film Nights on the Elbe) is Europe’s most beautiful open-air cinema
and concert festival. With the famous historical Dresden skyline as a backdrop, cinema-goers
watch classic movies on one of the largest mobile screens in the world.
44 For the twelfth year in succession, the Dresden Long Night of Science takes a look behind the
scenes at various scientific institutes. An innovation this year is the iOS and Android app that
­enables users to navigate the programme of events digitally and to filter by interest, time, location or age group.

visitors to Dresden
Dresden is not only famous for its magnificent baroque buildings such as the Zwinger, the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), Semper Opera House and Royal Palace but also for the lively
nightlife across the river in Dresden Neustadt and for the many opportunities to relax on the
banks of the Elbe and in the city’s parks. Great advice on how to spend your time in Dresden – absolutely up to date and authentic – can be found in the USE-IT street map, prepared by young
people for young people. It is the ideal companion for your visit to Dresden.

44 The English-language version of the USE-IT map is available free of charge at tourist information offices and in all Dresden hostels. It can also be downloaded as a PDF at

44 If you prefer to explore Dresden on your own, a good place to start is in the Old Town. Here
you can stroll past the Semper Opera until you reach the Zwinger, the former ‘party venue’ for
the prince electors. It houses some of the museums and galleries that constitute the famous
State Art Collections, with works by artists ranging from Raphael to Richter, fine porcelain and an
impressive array of mathematical and physical instruments. From the Zwinger, continue past the
famous Fürstenzug (Procession of the Princes) mural, the largest porcelain image in the world,
and on to the Neumarkt (New Market Square) on which stands the city’s most famous landmark,
the Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) which was rebuilt only ten years ago after being destroyed
in the Second World War. From here, the itinerary takes you through the Münzgasse quarter with
its many pubs and beer gardens to Brühl’s Terrace, affectionately known as the ‘Balcony of Europe’. You then walk across the Augustusbrücke (Augustus Bridge) from where you can see the
distant Goldener Reiter (Golden Rider) statue depicting Augustus the Strong on horseback.
44 Having now reached the other bank of the Elbe, you see Dresden from its vibrant, funky and
multicultural side. The ‘alternative’ quarter of Neustadt has the highest density of bars and clubs
in Germany. The district also has a great selection of restaurants and fashionable clothing outlets.
The ornate courtyards of the Kunsthofpassage accommodate small boutiques stocking arts and
craft items, as well as pleasant cafés and restaurants. Not far away, the Blue Note jazz bar hosts
live music every day and serves an amazing selection of whiskies. Dresden’s nightlife pulsates
around the Scheune (= Barn) club with its beer garden and Indian food. Be sure to take a look at
Pfunds Molkerei (Pfund’s Dairy) on Bautzner Strasse which is listed in the Guinness Book of Records
as the world’s most beautiful dairy shop, not least because of its 250 square metres of hand-painted
tiles.

Welcome to the capital of student clubs
50 years have passed since the first Dresden student club opened its doors – the Gutzkow. Today,
there are 14 student clubs in the Saxon capital – more than in any other German city. They are a
major feature of the city’s cultural landscape, despite the fact that they have to compete against
commercial pubs, clubs and discos too numerous to list. Student-friendly prices and a varied
­selection of intimate milieus, evening cabaret, jam sessions, live performances, cinema and disco
prove popular with more than just the city’s student population.
Our recommendations
44 One of the oldest and most attractive student clubs in Dresden is the Bärenzwinger (Bear Pit).
There is always something going on that will appeal to students, non-students, theatre and music
lovers, football fans and many other categories of the public. The 20-strong staff organise a
­programme of events that pulls in crowds for six days of the week. One very special highlight is
the annual summer theatre. Now into its eleventh season, the dramatic presentation for 2014
is ­‘Kleider machen Bräute – Ein Shakespeare von den Amazonen’ (Clothes Maketh the Bride –
A Shakespeare of the Amazons). Performances commence at 8pm every day except Monday from
18th July to 14th August and from 19th August to 7th September.
44 Every Saturday and every last Friday of the month, Club Mensa opens its doors to all party animals. With its huge dance floor, its wide variety of genres, including 70s, 80s, rock, black and
house plus its three bars with a huge range of drinks and cocktails at affordable prices, this is the
perfect venue for a party night to remember.

Dresdeners love to party
Dresden has a long tradition of celebration. From June to August, one city district after another
stages its annual festival. We have compiled a small selection for everyone who likes to celebrate
while getting to know the Dresdeners and the city they call home.
Our recommendations
44 Every year on the third weekend in June, Dresden’s alternative quarter stages the Bunte Republik Neustadt (BRN). Somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000 visitors attend concerts and
open-air parties that turn night into day. The festival thrives on the creativity and cosmopolitan
outlook of the local residents. The many artists who have settled in Dresden Neustadt put on performances, exhibitions and hands-on activities for people of all ages. Another highlight of summer in Neustadt is also worth entering in your diary: the Scheune Schaubuden Sommer, a theatre
and cabaret festival that is unique in Germany, all centred on the Scheune club.
44 Not quite as big but just as colourful as the BRN is the HechtFest, the gala organised by the
residents of the eponymous Hecht district. Always held on the last weekend of August, this is an
opportunity for residents and friends to revel in their good fortune of living in this neighbourhood located on the edge of Neustadt, with open-air concerts, street performers, children’s activities, theatre and international cuisine. The three-day HechtFest has four separate concert stages
featuring live music ranging from indie to reggae and from ska to folk. In the inner courtyards,
local residents ply visitors with coffee, cake and various cultural enticements.
44 Traditionally held on the last weekend in June, the Elbhangfest draws the crowds to the Dresden suburbs of Loschwitz, Wachwitz, Niederpoyritz, Hosterwitz and Pillnitz. The title chosen for
this year is a humorous jumbling of the names of these old municipalities: ‘Von Niederwach bis
Hosterlosch – Dem Pill-Witz auf der Spur’ (From Niederwach to Hosterlosch: In Pursuit of the
Joke Pill). Stretching over a distance of around seven kilometres along the banks and hill slopes
of the Elbe (hence the name of the festival), village squares, parks and gardens of stately homes
provide the venues for nearly 200 concerts, public readings and fun activities for children. All
five of these former villages (now Dresden suburbs) have markets for local crafts, and on every
street corner, you can purchase regional wines, fresh elderflower lemonade, homemade cakes
and many other delicacies.

From street art to dance: Summer of art in Dresden
Dresden is a city that is not only young but also keeps you young. In summer it attracts people
from the whole of Germany and beyond who wish to devote their holidays to developing their
­artistic talents. Even in the time of Augustus the Strong, artists such as Bernardo ‘Canaletto’
Bellotto found inspiration by the banks of the Elbe.
This ongoing tradition is nurtured by the Sommerakademie für Bildende Kunst (Dresden International Summer Academy of Fine Arts) run by riesa efau. For two weeks every summer, around
200 participants from 15 countries, aged 16 to 99 years, come together to work on artistic projects
under professional guidance. Ranging from painting, street art and video art to photography,
drawing, collage and wood sculpture, the programme includes 20 different courses. The focus
this year is on the human figure. In doctor and painter Manfred Zoller, riesa efau have recruited
a lecturer who ranks as one of the world’s leading experts on the human anatomy in art.

44 The crowning glory of the Summer Academy of Fine Arts is the exhibition staged by the course
participants and their lecturers in the Motorenhalle, the Project Centre for Contemporary Art
(private opening 9th August; exhibition lasts until 23rd August).
44 At the International Ballet Summer School Dresden, beginners and advanced students from
14 years of age as well as young professional ballet dancers from around the world are taught by
renowned artistes over a two-week period. The course includes ballet variants such as classical
pointe, jazz and modern. The best dancers are invited to attend a twelve-month training programme
at the Palucca University of Dance or at the SemperOper Ballet Company. On 30th August, course
participants showcase their talent in a public performance at the Palucca University of Dance.

44 Young academics specialising in architecture and the humanities attending the 2014 Henry
Arnhold Dresden Summer School will be exploring the topic of ‘Macht, Wissen, Teilhabe.
Sammlungsinstitutionen im 21. Jahrhundert’ (Power, Knowledge, Participation: Collection Institutions in the 21st century). The focus will be on the question of how digitisation and globalisation are affecting existing ways of organising knowledge and on the role of museums and libraries. Some of the lectures will be open to the public. The dates are due to be announced in
mid-June on the website of the Summer School.

44 The Dresden Card issued by Dresden Information GmbH entitles the holder to free travel on
buses, trams and S-Bahn as well as free admission to thirteen museums plus discounts on many
other tourist attractions.
44 When and where is everything happening? The answers to this question have been available
since 1990 in the free DRESDNER Kulturmagazin. In addition to the handy calendar which is
­systematically arranged according to date and type of event, the guide also includes interesting

44 Cinemas, museums and pubs offer discounts for young people and students. Here are three
typical deals: 1) Tickets for students in their first term cost €3.00 at the Staatsschauspiel (not applicable to all seats) – school pupils, university students and trainees pay €7.00 – standard prices
are €10.00 to €27.00; 2) At Club Puschkin, Monday is Student Day for all guests – free admission
all evening and reduced prices on drinks; 3) Free admission to the German Hygiene Museum up
to the age of 16 – school pupils, trainees and university students pay €3.00 instead of €7.00.
44 It is simply not possible to explore all of the exciting places in Dresden in a single day. Cheap
accommodation is available at one of the many youth hostels in the city; these can be quickly
found and a booking made via any of the better-known online platforms. The Mondpalast hostel
is located in the centre of Dresden Neustadt. Alternatively, if you prefer a Mexican-Aztec ambience,
you will love the Mezcalero. You can find hotels, guest houses and hostels at affordable prices

44 Take a leisurely stroll, browse and pick up a bargain – this is the joy of Dresden’s most characterful flea market held every Saturday morning from around 9 o’clock onwards. On the banks of
the Elbe next to the Albert Bridge, stallholders sell the classic mix of antiques, books, records,
porcelain vases and much more besides – including plenty of GDR memorabilia.
