Tong hails from Vietnam and has been with the Athenaeum for almost six and a half years. This is his third time being honored as employee of the month. Tong works as the bartender of the Hayman Lounge; you can find him there on weeknights from 4:30pm to 10:00pm. His infectious smile and jovial personality make him an Athenaeum favorite. When asked what his signature drink was, Tong hesitated, commenting that he enjoys making whatever a guest might ask for before deciding on his martinis. “People say I make the best martini in town” said Tong, grinning broadly, “I have customers come in over and over for them.” When not mixing Pasadena’s favorite martinis, Tong enjoys spending his time with his wife and two sons: Peter, 25, and Nicholas, 17. He enjoys watching football and basketball; his favorite teams are the Denver Broncos, as he is an avid Peyton Manning fan, and the Los Angeles Lakers when Kobe Bryant plays. Tong loves Mel Gibson movies, especially Braveheart and The Patriot. Reciprocal Club Special (Marisu’s Message Corner) And your eyes, they were green and grey Like an April day, But lit into amethyst When I stooped and kissed; ~ Roses and Rue by Oscar Wilde April festivities at the club start with a bang featuring our annual Beer Dinner on Friday, April 4. I believe this is the sixth year that The Athenaeum has introduced a “beer” event at the club. The first beer dinner was very well attended with almost 150 members and guests and a waiting list. Attendance to the two “beer” events have grown so we continue to offer the “beer” experience twice a year. We expect a full house again, especially with a line-up of international beers at the reception. We are all familiar with April 15, Tax Day as the Day of Reconciliation. We are starting a new event around Tax Day with a “Burger Night” theme. Hopefully the warm Southern California weather will not fail us that evening as we plan to take the Rathskeller “al Fresco.” An offering of gourmet burgers with varied condiments, a wide selection of sauces and burgers plus a salad bar and dessert are all to be had for $15/person. The only item that will be added to that on your final statement will be the sales tax – of course! The changing of the seasons means a change in our lunch and dinner menus. Early in the month, the Food Committee will meet to preview and taste the new spring menu entrees that will be introduced at a la carte dining mid-April. Look for the fresh new items when you come and dine in the latter part of April. The last week of April is Administrative Professionals’ Week - Monday, April 21 through Friday, April 25. This is the week when we show our appreciation to our administrative staff for all the organization they bring to our work life. Can you imagine what your office would be like without them? During this week, all desserts on the menu will be complimentary for your administrative team when you bring them to dine and celebrate at The Athenaeum. Easter Brunch on Sunday, April 20 is another rite of Spring. Dust off those Easter hats, freshen up the bows on those Easter baskets and treat the entire family for brunch at the club. The annual egg hunt for children aged 2 and above is one of those traditions that we have carried on annually. Goodie-filled Easter baskets will be given to the lucky ones who retrieve the golden egg at each of the three hunts. The Rath al Fresco opens Friday, May 23; our countdown begins. I look forward to seeing you all at The Athenaeum. Please drop by my office when you are next at the club. Stay at the Union League of Chicago and enjoy a guaranteed Reciprocal Rate of just $149.00 weekdays or $129.00 on weekends. You can also add and enjoy their American buffet for $12.00 per person as well as complimentary access to the club's five-level athletic facility during your stay. For more information, or for reservations, please call the club's Reservations Department at 312.427.7800 or 800.443.0578. Marisu Jimenez General Manager Drs. TUESDAY, APRIL 1, 2014, 8:00 p.m., Hall of Associates Red Herring, by John Hollinger, Directed and Introduced by Doug Smith Is this a murder mystery? A “film noir” parody? A nuclear espionage spy thriller? A comedy about marriage and other explosive devices? Set in the McCarthy era, Red Herring juxtaposes huge dramatic historical events and tiny details in a madcap plot. 3 The Athenaeum Architectural Preservation Fund (AAPF) We’d like to thank each Athenaeum member who responded generously to our AAPF mailing campaign in November 2013. To date, this mailing has raised over $39,000. The AAPF is an endowment dedicated to the restoration and upkeep of the club’s physical facilities. If you would like to join the members below with your own gift, please mail your donation to Marisu Jimenez at The Athenaeum at 551 South Hill Avenue, Pasadena, California 91106. Donation checks should be written to The Athenaeum, with the memo line showing “AAPF.” Thank you all for your generosity!
