Grades 1-3 Introduction April 2016 marks the fifteenth annual Morris County Library Children's Poetry Festival; held each year during National Poetry Month. This year ninety young people, grades 1-7, submitted verses. Our festivities wrap up with a Poetry Party at which all participants receive certificates of recognition. This year we thank the Morris County Library Foundation for their generous donation of four prizes. Judging the poems were three of our librarians: Joanne Cronin, Mitch Greenberg, and Miriam Kornblatt. The Festival was overseen by Supervising Librarian Princess Thomas and Elizabeth DeVincenzo of Children’s Services. The online Poetry Booklet was designed by Graphic Artist Marylou Sparano. Thanks to them all. We particularly appreciate the engagement and strong support of teachers at the Normandy Park and Peck schools. Congratulations to all our poets. Keep writing! His armor is gleaming, its like you're dreaming. He has a sword, that was given to him by his lord. His sword is sharp and as big as a harp. His helmet looks like a mop with a feather on top. He has a horse that is grey and stays still when told to stay. It eats any kind of prey. The knight is fading away, between night and day. For I hope you see Morgan Le Fay. Empathy Empathy is a nice thing to do. Make everyone feel good. Put yourself in other people’s shoes. Always care for others. Take care of other people. Help other people. You should never be mean. By Ainsley Frances Avers 7 years old, Second Grade, Normandy Park School Submitted April 20, 2016 A Poem About A Poem A poem about a poem, I wonder what that would be? Would it be describing words, like sizzling whizbee? I love writing stories all day and all night. But when it’s time to edit…Ouch! Do you have to do that in poetry? I guess mostly not, but sometimes you do. I guess I burst my bubble, and probably yours too. And now without further ado… Is there a poem called Acrostic too? I think there is a Cinquain, and free verse ones too. So many others, including Haiku. Now that we’ve covered some of everything. I guess we will say, “goodbye” to the poetry game. I looked up on the trees, And there were birds chirping “Spring, oh lovely spring is here!” That day was very lovely with flowers blooming and bees buzzing. Also some wonderful sounds of birds chirping! On the second day of spring, I saw some butterflies flying in our garden. They were looking for some sweet and juicy nectar to drink. They would start dancing in the air! The butterflies were almost as merry as going to a ball and dancing romantically across the floor! What a wonderland! Spring is with flowers and bees and tons to see. I can’t wait till next SPRING! Patience By Emma Nagl I thought I would be taller In the mountains A Queen of green and brown My realm laid out below me Neat as the green rug Grandma hooked One St. Patrick’s Day I thought I would be braver In the mountains Following the fierce paths Of pumas and grizzlies Ledge leaper Crag Climber Taking nothing for granted Leaving nothing unexplored I thought I would be wiser In the mountains Reading the history of the rocks In the old, shimmering rocks and stones Hearing lectures In the wind and waterfalls Stretching my mind Broader than Grandpa’s tall stories Multiplied by ten. I thought I would be taller Braver Wiser In the mountains And I wasn’t But I am more patient In the mountains And I can wait.
