Audits & Why They
Matter in Business
D.R. Horton Homes are
When it comes to audits, the numbers
really do tell the story. An independent audit is a
reflection on not only your business; it’s also a reflection
on your firm’s commitment to represent itself with
transparency.
Just as we have for the past 30 years, the chamber
conducts an independent audit annually. To ensure
adherence to generally accepted accounting principles,
the chamber’s finance committee and board of directors
approve the annual engagement of an auditing firm.
Columbia-based firm J.W. Hunt was engaged this past
August and the audit was reviewed and unanimously
approved by the finance committee and board of
directors this past September.
WHAT ARE THE TOP 5 REASONS TO CONDUCT AN AUDIT?
1. Ensure the effective operation of an organization.
2. R
eview compliance with a multitude of
administrative regulations.
3. I nstill a sense of confidence in management
that the business is functioning well and you are
prepared to meet potential challenges.
4. M
aintain/enhance the organization’s reputation in
the community.

Heritage at New Riverside by
D.R. Horton is set amidst the beautiful natural
surroundings of the South Carolina lowcountry.
D.R. Horton is building three home collections to meet
every home buyer’s needs, from one-story ranch plans
of 1500 sq. ft. to three-story homes with 4300 sq. ft.
The homes at Heritage of New Riverside start in the
$160s and offer many floor plans. Natural gas heat and
water heat are standard in every home. You’ll be living
your dream in your new home in Heritage at New
Riverside with all the great amenities offered, including
a huge community pool, clubhouse for entertaining,
playground and lagoons for fishing.
This community is located off Hwy. 46 at Heritage
Parkway. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday-Friday.
Call 843-706-4029 or visit
drhorton.com/hiltonhead.
5. P
erform a “due diligence” review for shareholders
or potential investors.
“An audit tests the essential internal controls over
financial reporting and provides impartial assessment
of the effectiveness of financial reporting,” said Ray
Warco, chairman of the chamber’s finance committee.
“For that reason, the chamber’s annual audit for the
past five years can be found on the chamber’s business
metrics website thinkhiltonheadisland.org.”

Business News November
Business in Education: Project Connect Donation Powers Local Math Classes
McCracken Middle School Math Teacher, Casey Swofford, remembers having to shelve
her students’ graphing calculators last spring because the school could not afford
to replace them. Now, thanks to the chamber’s business education Project Connect
program, and a donation by Interstate All Battery Center in Bluffton—problem solved!
“It’s a natural fit for us to do this,” said Carlton Bruner, President of Interstate Batteries’
Bluffton location. “When I heard about these teachers in need, it was a win-win.”
Project Connect helps partner teachers in need of classroom supplies with local
businesses and community members that want to support education in a tangible way.
Project Connect has many more teacher wish lists. For information on how you can
take part, contact the chamber at 843.785-3673 or email Hannah Horne at hhorne@

THAT’S GOOD ADVICE: The 5-Step Elevator Pitch
Can you tell someone who you are and what you do in five minutes or less? If you haven’t tried, you may want to consider it – it’s the best way to
turn strangers into possible clients.
Hit these basics, and you should be covered. Number one: introduce yourself, starting with your name, company name and your service. Follow-up
with the problems your company solves, offer proof and a plan, and stop and listen. Go ahead and practice, you’ll be surprised at how effectively
concise information can work for you.

Hilton Head Ironman
Nick Felix At World
Championships
in Kona
World-class triathlete Nick Felix knows all about
competing for his personal best. The Hilton Head
attorney and Lowcountry triathlete just returned
triumphantly from the Ironman World Championships
in Kona where he exceeded his goal with a 2.4 mile swim
in 1 hour 7 minutes; 112 mile bike ride in 5 hours 18
minutes, and 26.2 mile running marathon in 4 hours, 25
minutes, an average of 10:06 minutes per mile.
Not too many of us can imagine the speed, endurance
and commitment needed to make it to the world
championships, where Felix finished 994 out of 1,569 men
and 1,205 out of 2,134 total participants! Felix’s total time
was 11 hours, 00 minutes and 3 seconds.
Endurance training is second nature to the Citadel
graduate who rose to the rank of major in the U.S. Marine
Corps. When he’s not at his McNair Law Firm office, you
may see him training around the island. Training steadily
and mental preparation are what keep him going – CBM
salutes his efforts on the world stage and at home in the
Lowcountry.
