FOLK ART
T
he culmination of our year of planning is the
presentation of the schedule for the new year.
We look forward to painting with you in 2016!
Most of our classes are held at our studio in Eureka, a
small coastal community centered amongst the
towering redwoods of Northern California. We also
have two classes in Boise, ID in September 2016. For
Eureka classes, we provide transportation to and from
the airport. Several motels and a variety of restaurants
are located nearby. You will be responsible for making
your own motel reservations. Upon acceptance, you
will be sent a seminar packet that will include a list of
motels, rates, phone numbers, list of students, etc.
If you wish to take more than one class, a $100.00
deposit is required for each first choice class requested.
Seminars close quickly, so please list a second or third
choice if possible. All class openings will be filled on a
first come, first served basis. If your chosen selections
are full, we will place you on the waiting list and send
your entire deposit back to you. Once accepted,
deposit(s) are non-refundable. The balance of
your seminar fee will be due two months prior to your
class date. We realize how important certain classes
and dates can be to you. Send the application in as
fast as you can - and remember, if you are on the
waiting list, there are always cancellations.
The nearest airport is the Eureka/Arcata airport. The
airport is located approximately 13 miles north of our
studio in Eureka. United Airlines has jet service to
Eureka for all flights. United offers flights through
San Francisco.
If you would like to be picked up at the airport, we
will arrange for “Door to Door” airport shuttle service to
pick you up and take you to your hotel. We will also
arrange for them to take you back to the airport for
your departing flights. When your flight arrives, just
tell them your name and that you are with Jo Sonja’s
and you are on your way!
Lastly, from all of us here, we appreciate the interest
you have shown in our seminar program. Thank you
for your suggestions and your support- we hope to
see you in 2016!
DESIGN & COLOR
Class Dates - 2016
February 1 - 5 (Monday - Friday)
Instructor: Jo Sonja Jansen MDA, VGM
Class Fee: $500.00
Class Fee Includes: All paints and mediums used
during instruction.
We begin our 2016 seminar year with a Design and
Color class. A unique experience during which we
explore some of the many different aspects of creativity
and the actual development of a design.
As we have always done, the piece or pieces are not
included in the class fee and each artist is welcome to
bring a piece or two of your own choosing. There will
be exercises and times of sharing and encouragement
that, hopefully, will stimulate your creative “juices”.

THE
SNOW QUEEN
Class Dates - 2016
February 8 – 12 (Monday - Friday)
Class Fee: $500, if you have your own plate or $650, with plate included*
Class Fee Includes: Patterns, instructions, and all paints and mediums used during instruction.
The Snow Queen
By request we are going to do this design from the
past. This year it will be the Snow Queen. This
is a very detailed design which will take
the full week.
Some students may already
have the required chipcarved plate ready for this
class, and because of this
we are providing two
pricing options. If you
need a plate, we will
be happy to provide
one for you, and if
you do not, we can
offer you a lower
price. Please indicate on your registration form whether
you need a plate or
not.
*Note: Please, let us know if a
carved plate is needed when signing up for this class.
FLORAL
STUDIES
Class Dates - 2016
April 4 - 8 (Monday - Friday)
July 18 - 22 (Monday - Friday)
Class Fee: $600.00
Class Fee Includes: Patterns, instructions, painting surfaces, all paints and
mediums used during instruction.
Three styles have been chosen for this years studies and we have had very special
wood pieces made for them.
1. A small tilt top table is decorated with Italian florals. Background lighting gives an
interesting glow to this painting.*
2. Danish florals in a Rococo style decorate a semicircular salt box. The box is a reproduction of an old piece by Larry Pickett.
3. A wall clock which is again a reproduction of an old piece decorated in a Hindeloopen
floral style with small birds and scenes.
*The above table top is an example of the style that we will be painting.
The actual design, done on a tilt top table will be revealed at a later time.
PINOCCHIO

instruction.
Inspired by Heidi England, I finally
decided to try and illustrate the original
version of the Pinocchio story by Carlo
Collodi (Heidi even sent me her old book to
use). Well, upon receiving the book, I sat
down and read it through.
This wonderful story is here illustrated on a
small trunk and I tried to make it look like it came
from an Italian villa. Meet the dogfish (or Italian
Shark), he is five stories tall and a mile long in the
book. Open the lid to see inside his tummy, which
contains a painted wooden doll. The wooden dolls are
being designed now and will be provided for the class.

Each surface has a scene from the story and, of course, we will read bits and pieces of the story as we paint it.

The story of King Arthur was the inspiration for this adaptation of an old reliquary decorated with scenes. The techniques and style of decoration are from studies of early
manuscript painting styles and are great fun! Filled
with strokes and stylized objects, this is sure to tempt
your brushes.
HALLINGDAL
NOAH’S ARK
Class Date - 2016
August 15 - 19 (Monday - Friday)

Class Fee Includes: Wooden Ark with clock, wooden blocks, patterns and instructions, all paints and
mediums used in class.
This is a piece that I designed a number of years ago wanting to do a Noah’s Ark with Norwegian
influence. This ark is decorated with Hallingdal Rosemaling and the “town” on the top is really a collection
of small containers (the roofs lift off ). I envisioned it a staying on my desk and holding
paper clips, stamps, etc. The drop-down ark door enclosed an area
where I could hide my coffee cup and maybe a cookie, but now it
holds wooden blocks.

separate purchase while attending class.

For me, this is a week is a stroll down
memory lane. One of the first
artists to inspire my painting
journey was Peter Ompir and I
have always admired his painting
style and technique. Different
types of antiquing techniques will
be used in this class.
1. Child’s Chair: Inspired by Dutch design and old
Fraktur painting, this version of a small so-called
settle chair features a guardian angel and birds,
tulips and pomegranates.
2. Harvest Fruit: Rectangular tray with fruit and
flowers featuring the potato rub technique.

From the Hedalen Stave Church (Valdres)
comes the inspiration for this unique piece in
the style of a box used to hold religious relics.
It is painted with Adam and Eve on one side
and a small nativity on the other. Small floral
insets are painted with inspiration from Hovel
Gaarder’s decoration of the altar piece in
1767.

Studio Prep Hours:
We are open the weekend before all seminars and the weekend between seminars. The studio is
closed the weekend following the end of a two week session. Studio hours for prep are 9:00 AM 5:00 PM. Please allow yourself enough time for prep prior to class. In the event that flights are significantly delayed we will stay open until 9:00 PM on Sunday (if needed).

We do our best to put everyone in the classes that they request. However, there are times when we receive
more requests for classes than we have space. For those that are signing up for several different sessions - It
is very important that you please list the classes in order of their importance to you. Also please indicate who
you wish to attend with.
Seminar requests can be sent in immediately. HOWEVER requests need to be sent in via mail, UPS or
Fedex until 12/01/15. After that time we will be able to accommodate requests via phone, fax and email. We
need to maintain this policy so that we can process the applications in an orderly fashion. Thank you very
