January 2015
President’s Message Here’s wishing you a Very Happy New Year. 2015 marks the 100 anniversary of the introduction of the standardized Coca-Cola bottle. No other consumer package is a widely recognized simply by its shape. Although the glass bottle, once the standard bearer of the industry, is fading away, I expect that the hobble skirt bottle shape will live on for many more years in the form of plastic. With the deadline for publication, I am writing this in early December, and I am in the middle of putting up the decorations for the season. As you read this, many of you will have your decorations packed away for another year. Rory and I put up so much stuff, we usually don’t get ours down till the middle of February. Thank God for artificial trees! 2015 is an election year for the club’s board of directors. Two board members will be leaving due to term limits, but the entire board will be elected, so it is possible that we could have a totally new board. Please review the job descriptions and take note of the time involved. Positions on the board are rewarding, but also time consuming. Many of the functions of the club rely on prompt attention to the duties and a failure or delay in performing those duties can have a negative domino effect on the entire board and ultimately the membership. There are 5 mini conventions the first quarter of the year. The first is Fun Fest put on by the Central Florida Chapter in January in Deland, Florida. The Great Get Together that will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada in February. Tex Fest will be held in March in Plano, Texas and the Mid America Spring Fling will be held in Overland Park, Kansas this April. These mini conventions take place over a weekend and it is a great time and place to enjoy a convention on a smaller scale and renew friendships. The board is actively looking for the site to host our 2018 convention. We have not narrowed down the list except it will most likely be in the central to northeast portion of the country. Unfortunately, the uptick in the economy has caused the hotel bids to come in higher than in the past. We are trying to hold the line on $99 or less room rates but it is getting harder and harder to find nice hotels at those rates. We did get one proposal at $259.00 per night. As you can imagine, we respectfully declined. It is the goal of the board to find a place that is both nice and economical. After all, if we spend a fortune on the room, there isn’t much left in the budget to buy that item you have been wanting to add to your collection. The board put the convention form in the newsletter a month earlier than usual. This was done for two reasons. First, we want to get a better idea of the numbers so that we can have sufficient merchandise for the packet and meals. Second, we thought that there may be a few people who would register as a Christmas present to themselves. In any case, we want you to get a packet if you want one and we want to have sufficient meal gifts without having a large quantity left over. Until next month, Happy Collecting! page 2 January 2015 www.cocacolaclub.org The Coca-Cola Collectors Club 41st National Convention June 30–July 4, 2015 Glendale, AZ Name_________________________ AcctNo ____________ Address_______________________City__________State___Zip_____Country_____ Phone____________________E-Mail _______________________________________ PRICE QUANTITY TOTAL Registration Packet. The truck was parked on the side of the market away from the public. No one went to see it. There was nothing for sell or given away except for the picture of Santa and you. The bottle was the twentieth century competition among drink companies grew. The Coca-Cola Company realized it needed a distinctive bottle to stand out and be recognized and purchased by its consumers nation wide. It was the summer of 1915, and the Root Glass Company, was one of the numerous bottle manufacturers that had been sent a letter by Harold Hirsch, The Coca-Cola Company’s lawyer, in which he asked them to design a bottle. Most glass companies of the time closed down in the summer due to the extreme heat of operations during the summer months and no air conditioning. During this time, only Chapman Root, owner of the company, and his advisory staff were at the plant. This group consisted of Chapman’s son William, Alexander Samuelson, plant supervisor; T. Clyde Edwards, auditor; Roy Hurt, secretary, and Earl Dean, mold shop supervisor. page 12 The original prototype bottles bulged in the middle so much that they could not pass through the bottling machinery, and also too wide for the cases that were being used. The Root design team January 2015 www.cocacolaclub.org worked most of the summer on the bottle design and reducing the middle bulge. The bottle was made from a pale, “German green” glass.
