This is a tourist destination of awesome beauty. The progressive city of Chihuahua is full of colonial and historical
sites like the Cathedral, the Government Palace and Casa
Chihuahua; monumental sculptures like The Door of the
Sun and the Door of Chihuahua, and interesting museums
like Quinta Gameros, the Museum of Contemporary Art, of
the Revolution and the Museum of Religious Art. This city
is the starting point for the magical trip on the CHEPE train
through the Copper Canyon in the Tarahumara mountain
range.
The canyon forms a geological corridor with deep gorges, mountains, cataracts, caves, rivers, lakes and forests,
where tourists will be able to experience the adrenaline in
the recently inaugurated Copper Canyon Adventure Park,
or the peaceful life of the local native communities.
This natural wonder is the cradle of the Raramuri ethnic
group, whose origins can be traced back 10,000 years and
their ancient customs still very much alive, such as the
“yúmare” ritual rain dance.
Visiting Chihuahua-Copper Canyon means the entry into
a world full of magic and history.

Mexico City and 375 km (233 mi) from Ciudad Juarez and El
Paso, Texas. The Copper Canyon, in the Tarahumara mountain range, a part of the Urique Municipality, is a 4-hour
drive from the city of Chihuahua.
History
The Tarahumaras were among the earliest inhabitants in
this region. Although in Colonial times Jesuit missionaries
arrived in the mountain range to evangelize the tribe they
have preserved their customs and traditions until today.
When silver mines were found in the region during the
17th century, a large Spanish community settled there. This
prompted Captain Antonio De Deza y Ulloa, the Governor
of New Vizcaya, to establish the Real de San Francisco
de Cuéllar town on October 12, 1709, which later become
the city of Chihuahua as know today. Chihuahua played
and important role in the Mexican Revolution on 1910, led
by General Francisco Villa and his famous Division of the
North.

Republican Loyalty Museum
(The House of Juarez)
Characteristics: This was President Benito Juarez’s house
after he moved his government to the city. The museum
is divided into nine rooms where uniforms, weapons,
flags, documents, photographs and newspapers of the
era are on display, as well as the desk and bed President
Juarez used. The name of the city attests the loyalty of
Chihuahua’s people to this figure’s government.

Quinta Gameros
Characteristics: Eclectic mansion (mixing Renaissance,
baroque, gothic and other architectural styles), originally
built as the residence of a well-known mine engineer by
the name of Manuel Gameros.
Construction beganin 1907 and was completedin 1910.
The mansion occupies an area of 1000 m2 (10760 sq. ft.),
and its interior is decorated with art nouveau furniture and
objects. In 1999, Quinta Gameros was declared a National
Artistic Monument.

Quinta Gameros
This is a beautiful architectural work from the XIX Century, inaugurated in 1892. The Altar to the Fatherland can
be found in the central patio (the exact place where the
priest Hidalgo was shot) along with frescos that depict the
history of Chihuahua. Recently a gallery of arms from the
Independence period and a museum dedicated to Hidalgo
were added.

Museum of the Revolution
In an old house that was once the property of Francisco
Villa, a large number of the revolutionary leader’s personal
possessions are on show; the car in which he was assassinated and articles related to the revolution, and also his
famous “Golden” uniformed troops.

Miguel Hidalgo’s cell in the Casa Chihuahua
Museum
The cell where the Father of the Nation spent his last
days can be found in the cellars of the Casa Chihuahua
Museum, the former Federal Palace. Due to the good
treatment his jailers gave him, Hidalgo dedicated some
verses to them which today can be read on a commemorative plaque.

The Trolley
Characteristics: Bus decorated as an early twentieth
century wagon train, bearing the name “The Tarahumara.” Take a 50-minute trip through historic downtown
Chihuahua to see the city’s most important buildings and
monuments, and stop at museums and craft shops. From
Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Location: The
starting point is the Plaza Hidalgo, located on Calle Aldama
and Vicente Guerrero.

CHEPE Railroad
Characteristics: Its name is an acronym that includes Ch
and P for Chihuahua-Pacific. It covers the Chihuahua-Los
Mochis (municipality in the State of Sinaloa)-Chihuahua
route. It is renowned as one of the top 10 most spectacular train journeys in the world. It has run in the Copper
Canyon since 1961. Its infrastructure is a masterpiece of
Mexican engineering.
The railroad is 653 km (405 mi) long and has, 37 bridges
and 86 tunnels.
The Copper Canyon
Characteristics: This 60,000 km2 (37,282 mi2) geological
system of mountains and deep canyons was formed 20
million years ago and is four times larger than the Colorado Canyon in Arizona, United States of America. They
represent the roughest part of the Tarahumara mountain
range; some of the most important are Urique, Sinforosa,
Batopilas, Candameña and Huapoca canyons. The height
of the mountains exceeds 3,000 m (9,842 ft).
The entrance to the canyon is on the Chihuahua-Pacific
Railroad (CHEPE). The journey starts in the City of Chihuahua as the first leg and then continues on its spectacular
route up to Los Mochis, Sinaloa.

Characteristics: This is the entrance to the canyon in
the Tarahumara mountain range. This colorful town has
superb tourist facilities, including a visit to the House of
Handicrafts, where a historical and cultural sample of the
Raramuri (Tarahumara) people is displayed.
Arareko and Cusárare (Tarahumara communities) and
Recohuata (thermal water spring) are located in the surrounding area.

Characteristics: Divisadero and Posada Barrancas are local
stations, both of which have been converted into natural
viewpoints from the Urique Canyon Tours to other natural
viewpoints, such as Piedra Volada and the Mogótabo
Plateau.
This zone has excellent hotels, guide services, trips to
the bottom of the canyon and horseback riding.
Characteristics: An old missionary community founded
by Jesuit Juan María de Salvatierra, who also ordered the
construction of the St. Xavier mission. Close to the town
are the Yerépavo Waterfall and the natural viewpoint
of Gallego Hill that overlooks The Urique Canyon. There
is also a shelter for Tarahumaran girls here. This is the
starting point for horse rides or hikes over several days
through numerous canyons, from Cerocahui to Batopilas.

The Basaseachi and Piedra Volada Waterfalls
The two highest waterfalls in Mexico are located inside
the Basaseachi National Park (covering 625.5 hectares) in
the Barranca de la Candameña, one of the most charming
in the region. The observation points of the Rancho San
Lorenzo offer the most spectacular views of the canyon
and the Basaseachi waterfall (246 m -807 ft), while in
order to reach the Piedra Volada (453 m -1,486 ft), only
visible during the summer, you have to travel along a dirt
road for 2 kilometres from the village of Huajamar. This
place is a favourite of visitors who enjoy trekking, rock
climbing and mountain biking.
Peña del Gigante
This is a totally vertical rock measuring 885 meters in
height that is described as “only for experts” in rock climbing guides. Its main observation points can be reached
from the village of Huajamar.

Piedra Volada
Ecotourism
Hiking through the Urique and Batopilas canyons is an
extraordinary experience. This is a journey of at least three
days, along which you will see endless varieties of birds,
other wildlife and native plant species. Hikers also have the
very special opportunity of learning first-hand about
the indigenous Raramuri people, since the trail passes
through their land.
Mountaineering
This extreme sport can be enjoyed at the Tarahumara
mountain range, in the Sinforosa Canyon (near Guacochi
town) which is known as“The King of Canyons”in recognition to its narrow height of 1,830 m (6,003 ft), the deepest
in the entire system. It boasts 100 m (328 ft) high cascades
whose waters flow into the Green River.
Copper Canyon Adventure Park
The new adventure park located on the mountain chain
of Chihuahua, has a number of attractions created on the
edge of the Cooper Canyon, a majestic canyon 4 times larger than the Grand Canyon. The park includes an amazing
cable car, a zip line that travels a distance of over 2.5 miles
and in its deepest sections it has over 1,476 ft high, the Via

Ferrata, and a panoramic restaurant with glass floor at the
edge of the abyss.

Expochihuahua is in the city of Chihuahua. It is a first-class
