T H E D I S T I L L AT I O N P R O C E S S Dating back since the beginning of the world, the heat of the sun evaporates water from the earth’s surface into the atmosphere, leaving impurities behind. As the vapor or air cools, it condenses and falls back to earth as rain, snow or other forms of precipitation. CONDENSATION P R ECIPITATION EVAPORATION Automatic Stainless Steel Water Distillers Countertop Plastic Water Distillers Water Filtration Systems WATER DISTILLATION PROCESS The distillation process duplicates the earth’s cycle of evaporation and precipitation and is highly effective in removing all contaminants used in insecticides, herbicides, and lead as well as bacteria and viruses. The extended boiling water process kills virtually every contaminate. Micro-organisms are not evaporated into the water; they remain in the boiling chamber as waste. Systems with carbon filters are recommended for removing volatile organic compounds (VOC’s). NOTE: Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors.VOCs are emitted by a wide array of products numbering in the thousands. Examples include: paints and lacquers, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, pesticides, building materials and furnishings, office equipment such as copiers and printers, correction fluids and carbonless copy paper, graphics and craft materials including glues and adhesives, permanent markers, and photographic solutions. 1 WHAT’S IN YOUR DRINKING WATER? Drinking water (both bottled and tap) is expected to contain small amounts of some contaminants at minimum. In the same way that tap water’s taste and quality may vary from place to place, bottled water’s taste and quality vary among and even within brands. The taste and quality of both bottled water and tap water depend on the source and quality of the water, including its natural mineral content and how, or if, the water is treated. MAKE SURE THAT ALL WATER IS SAFE TO DRINK … The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) set drinking water standards. EPA sets standards for tap water provided by public water suppliers; FDA sets standards for bottled water based on EPA standards. Neither EPA nor FDA certifies bottled water. People with severely weakened immune systems or other specific health conditions may wish to further treat their water at home or purchase high quality bottled water. ! DID YOU KNOW? 33 MILLION CASES OF GASTROINTESTINAL ILLNESS associated with public drinking water systems occur in the US annually according to the CDC. As much as government tries, public facilities aren’t equipped to handle modern day contaminates that leak into our critical drinking sources. Take action! Distill your water! BOTTLED IS BEST? HERE’S THE FACTS •• 25% violated strict applicable state (California) limits for bottled water in at least one sample, most commonly for arsenic or certain cancer-causing man-made (“synthetic”) organic compounds. •• 20% contained more bacteria microbiological-purity “guidelines.” than allowed under •• 20% contained synthetic organic chemicals – such as industrial chemicals (e.g., toluene or xylene) or chemicals used in manufacturing plastic (e.g., phthalate, adipate, or styrene) •• 4% violated excessive fluoride and 2% for excessive coliform bacteria. •• In addition, many bottles contained arsenic, nitrates, or other inorganic contaminants at levels below current standards. While in most cases the levels found were not surprising, in eight cases arsenic was found in at least one test at a level of potential health concern. Therefore, the NRDC says, “while much tap water is indeed risky, having compared available data we conclude that there is no assurance that bottled water is any safer than tap water.” 2 40% OF BOTTLED WATER STARTS OUT AS MUNICIPAL TAP WATER THE NATIONAL RESOURCES DEFENSE COUNCIL (NRDC) CONDUCTED AN INDEPENDENT TEST ON BOTTLED WATER. More than 1,000 bottles from 103 brands tested. The NRDC test is the most comprehensive independent testing of bottled water publicly available. CRYPTOSPORIDIUM, HEARD OF IT? In healthy individuals, the parasite Cryptosporidium can cause illness; however, for those with weakened immune systems battling cancer or AIDS, it can cause severe illness and possibly death. Only (3) methods protect again cryptosporidium: Distillation, Reverse Osmosis or Filtration with an absolute 1 micron filter. RECALL BOTTLED WATER In the USA, there have been over 100 incidents of bottled water contamination leading to recalls, 1/3 of which have never been made public. In Ireland, a survey conducted in 2007 found that 7% of the samples were contaminated with something that exceeded Irish or EU guidelines. 6% has coliform bacteria and some had E. Coli – the worst form of fecal contamination. A study in the Netherlands, 2004, tested 68 commercial mineral waters, 1 tap water, and 1 sample from a natural well, taken from 16 countries. 40% had contamination with bacteria of fungus. In Pakistan, 2003, eleven brands of mineral water were declared contaminated and unfit for human consumption. MYTH: BENEFICIAL MINERALS COME FROM DRINKING WATER. The body contains 19 essential mineral elements, all of which must be derived from food: fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry, grains, nuts, and dairy products. The minerals in water are so scant that in Boston, MA for example, one would have to drink 676 8-ounce glasses DAILY of tap water to obtain the Recommended Daily Allowance of calcium. That person would have to drink 1,848 8-ounce glasses to get the DAILY dose of magnesium, 848 8-ounce glasses to get the DAILY dose of iron, and 168,960 8-ounce glasses to obtain the DAILY dose of phosphorus. Can you imagine drinking that much water, daily? 33% OF BOTTLED WATER TESTED WAS SIGNIFIC ANTLY CONTAMINATED RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TREATING WATER FROM FEMA & THE RED CROSS Information provided by FEMA/Red Cross BOILING “Boiling is the safest method of treating water.” Kills biological contaminants. The first stage of the prefilter cartridge effectively reduces big impurities. 2. The solid carbon block cartridge significantly reduces volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as trihalomethanes, chlorine, chloroform, chlorinated hydrocarbons, herbicides, and pesticides. 3. This prefiltered water is heated to 212° F (100° C) killing microbes such as bacteria, cysts and viruses that may be present. 4. Steam rises, leaving behind dead microbes, dissolved solids, salts, heavy metals, and other substances. 5. The vent system releases low-boiling light gases (residual VOCs). 6. Steam is cooled in the stainless steel condenser. 7. This final filter enhances taste and purity by adsorption, aeration and degasification. Purified/distilled water is collected and stored in the stainless steel reservoir. The compact design of the countertop model takes up little space on your counter. Both models (countertop and undercounter) may be installed by the user. It includes the necessary hardware and aerator adapter that fits most residential faucets. Each model’s impressive capacity has the ability to produce up to 1,000 gallons of filtered, great-tasting water. The Nautilus 0.5 micron cartridge is designed for highly effective filtration of water ensuring that the influent water passes through the multiple stages of filtration. Initially, the multi-stage pre-filter is made of efficient polypropylene fiber layers which mechanically filter the water. Larger particles are trapped in the outer layers and fine particles are withheld by the inner layers providing excellent dirt holding capacity and longer filter life. The activated carbon block reduces Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), trihalomethanes (TTHMs), lead, and chlorine taste and odor. This 0.5 micron carbon block filter has the capacity of cyst reduction greater than 99.9%. Therefore, cysts such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia Lamblia are effectively reduced. Distilled water doesn’t, can’t and won’t leach out minerals that have become part of the cell structure. It collects only minerals that have already been rejected or excreted by the cells. DOES DISTILLED WATER TASTE BLAND OR HAVE A ‘ FLAT TASTE’? ? Oxygen gives water its taste. Water shouldn’t have a taste or a metallic after bite. A reason for distilled water having this label for ‘flat taste’ is people are accustomed to drinking chlorinated or well water high in iron content for a long time. When introduced to distilled water for the first time, it is a taste change noticeable to their taste buds. ARE DISTILLERS EXPENSIVE TO RUN? ? Home distillers take about 3kw to make 1 gallon of distilled water. USA avg energy cost is 7.8 cents per kilowatt hour, that’s less than 25 cents to make 1 gallon. Amortization of the initial purchase of the distiller can be made in a short time. WHAT’S IN MY WATER? ? There are more than 75,000 chemical compounds used by industry and agriculture, with thousands more added each year—many unregulated. 80% percent of these chemicals have never been tested for long-term, chronic toxicity. It’s estimated that 20 billion tons of chemicals, radioactive waste, and pollutants are introduced into the environment each year, and the belief is that most of these toxic chemicals eventually reach our water supply. In the United States, the EPA has evaluated and set standards for only a small percentage of the more than 700 chemicals found in drinking water supplies. HOW QUICKLY DO I NEED TO DRINK DISTILLED WATER? ? In order to ensure purity, it’s recommended to use distilled water within three days. Once opened, water is exposed to bacteria. Keep distilled water in a sealed container, in a cool dry place between uses, away from sunlight and heat sources, to inhibit the growth of bacteria. As long as the seal is good so no air gets in, you can store distilled water indefinitely. WHAT’S THE PURPOSE OF THE CARBON FILTER? ? The carbon filter is responsible for removing gasseous and liquid chemicals from the water being distilled. Carbon filters are recommended as a final treatment for VOC’s pesticides and petro-chemical by-products. Nautilus also offers a carbon mineral filter for some products. This filter adds minerals back into the pure H2O. CARE & CLEANING OF THE NAUTILUS DISTILLER ? FILTER CHANGES: Carbon Filter cups need replacing every 2 months or so. Coconut shell carbon filters protect the distiller’s inlet water valve from sediment and significantly reduces industrial chemicals, herbicides and pesticides from tap water. Coconut shell carbon filters should be replaced about 1x per year. BOILER CLEANING: Inorganic residue is deposited in the boiling chamber of the distiller. Every few weeks or whenever deposits exceed 1⁄16 of an inch (.16 cm) the boiler may need to cleaned with either distilled white vinegar or with a powdered de-scalant such as citric acid. *Operational cleaning and replacement filter requirements are essential for the product to perform as noted.
