NEWARK WEST ESSEX CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER ESSEX COUNTY COLLEGE 2016 summer youth programs WWW.ESSEX.EDU/SUMMERCAMP summer YOUTH PROGRAMS 2016 ESSEX COUNTY COLLEGE COMMUNITY AND CONTINUING EDUCATION join us this summer NEWARK Each summer, Essex County College opens its doors to children (entering grades 1 - 8 as of September) for our Summer Youth Program which provides them with academic instruction, recreation, and cultural indoor/ outdoor activities. We have a wide selection of programs that include: math, reading, writing, phonics, dance, acting, artistic skills, arts & crafts, video gaming, basic web design, science, sports and much more. Computer and recreation is also incorporated into the daily schedule. Indoor and outdoor activities play an integral part in the Essex County College Summer Youth Program; giving its participants enthusiam for lifelong learning, commitment to service, self-confidence, and a stronger sense of community. We have been fortunate enough to see many past participants grow up and accomplish their goals when studying in high school and/or college. As a result, we believe that the Summer Youth Program is very beneficial in the lives of those who attend. YOUTH PROGRAMS 2016 TWO-WEEK SESSIONS SESSION I: JULY 5 – JULY 15 SESSION II: JULY 18 – JULY 29 SESSION III: AUGUST 1 – AUGUST 12 APP ATTACK/ APP ADVENTURES summer AGES 10 - 13 (current) Session I: Ages 10-13 Session III: NO CLASS NEW! BRICKS 4 KIDZ® ROBOTICS AGES 8 - 12 (current) Session I: Ages 8-12 “MY DAUGHTER ALWAYS LOOKS FORWARD TO COMING TO THE SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAM. SHE LOVES EXPRESS YOURSELF AND THE COMPUTER CLASSES... YOUR STAFF IS VERY PROFESSIONAL.” NEWARK Session II: NO CLASS In this two-week program, youth will have the opportunity to enter the world of mobile app design and customize their own game. Using a specialized app and game development tool, students will explore the world of web-based apps. In addition, students will learn the basics of coding languages like HTML, JavaScript and CSS through a series of web projects and design challenges every day. Student created projects will be accessible on a protected site. This program is offered in conjunction with Black Rocket Productions. -Tammy Bridgeforth (Parent) Session II: NO CLASS Session III: NO CLASS Making it move is the name of the game! Kids will love to see their creations in motion using LEGO® wireless remote controls. Each day, students will use fascinating and challenging LEGO® components to create dynamic vehicles, inventions, machines and more. Using drag-and-drop icon-based software, WeDo software provides an introduction into the world of computer programming and robotics that will equip children to succeed in a technology-based marketplace. As they enjoy the fun of building, students will understand the basic working principles of many ingenious devices that are part of our everyday lives. This program is a load of fun and learning for budding engineers. All participants take home a custom mini-figure at the end of the program. Computer and recreational activities included. This program is offered in conjunction with Bricks 4 Kidz® NEW! BRICKS 4 KIDZ® CLASSIC ARCADE ADVENTURES AGES 6 - 9 (current) Session I: NO CLASS Session II: NO CLASS Session III: Ages 6-9 Like PIXELS, jump into the world of classic arcade and video games! Eat flashing dots; collect coins and rings; avoid getting killed by enemies; overcome obstacles and advance to the highest levels! Students will build the famous plumber brothers, a Brick Eater, a jumping hedgehog, alien invaders, and more! They also play fun challenge games and create theme related crafts. All students take home a custom mini-figure at the end of the program. Computer and recreational activities included. This program is offered in conjunction with Bricks 4 Kidz® summer YOUTH PROGRAMS 2016 CAMP DISCOVERY GAME ANIMATION/3D VIDEO GAMING GRADE 1 (as of September) Session I: Grade 1 AGES 8-13 (current) Session II: Grade 1 Session III: Grade 1 This two-week program will give children preparing for first grade an academic foundation as they discover the joys of learning. Phonics, reading, math, science and penmanship will be addressed along with creative arts, computers, and recreation. COMPUTER BLASTER GRADES 2-6 (as of September) Session I: Grades 2 - 3 Session II: Grades 5 - 6 Session III: Grades 4 - 5 Children learn many things in different ways with computers; they will discover different tools and ideas for using technology. This educational and enjoyable two-week program designed for beginners and proficient youth includes Keyboarding, PowerPoint, Computer Graphics, Internet, basic web-page design as well as fun and recreational activities. EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM GRADES 2-6 (as of September) Session I: Grades 3-4 Session II: Grades 2-3 Session III: Grades 5-6 This program offers two weeks of academic enrichment for students entering the second through sixth grades in September. Program design is based on the premise that learning can be fun. The curriculum entails instruction in reading comprehension, writing, math, computers, recreation, and creative arts. Session II: Ages 8-13 Session III: NO CLASS Take your game design to the next level! In this program, youth will create and animate their own character sprites, objects and background. The special animated character will be used in conjunction with their customized video game. In video gaming, youth will learn the physics behind 3D-games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling flow of game-play and storytelling. Games are only compatible on PC computers; can be converted to Mac for an additional charge. NOTE: Student created games and animation will be accessible on a protected site. This program is offered in conjunction with Black Rocket Productions. GOLF & TENNIS AGES 7-13 (current) Session I: Ages 7-9 Session II: Ages 10-13 Session III: NO CLASS It is never too late to learn the games of golf and tennis. This program invites boys and girls at all skills levels that have not played golf or tennis but show an interest in the games. The goal is to develop basic sport skills, instill good sportsmanship and self-discipline to become the best player possible. MINECRAFT DESIGNERS/MODDERS AGES 8-13 (current) Session I: NO CLASS Session II: NO CLASS Session III: Ages 8-13 This two week program is designed to provide a balanced literacy program which encompasses literacy & writing, mathematics & pre-algebra, study skills & test prep, in addition to computers and recreation. Students will learn the basics of creating 3-D models using software to design their own objects, create skins for characters and import them into your favorite Minecraft games. For Modders, students will use their favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming, scripting, logic statements and introductory coding through Minecraft. This program is offered in conjunction Black Rocket Productions. Recreational activities included. NOTE: Parent email address is required to use 3D modeling software. To access project at home students must have a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone and game console version of Minecraft are not compatible. EXPRESS YOURSELF SOCCER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM II GRADES 7–8 (as of September) Session I: Grades 7-8 Session II: Grades 7-8 Session III: Grades 7-8 AGES 8-13 (current) Session I: Ages 8-13 Session II: Ages 8-13 Session III: Ages 8-13 This program offers two weeks of dance and acting for students with an interest in theatrical expression. Instruction will consist of dance classes in ballet and modern musical theatre jazz, along with fundamentals in acting and script reading. Participants will see the dance and drama come to life as they display their talent in a final performance at the end of each two-week session. Comfortable clothes required. Session III: Ages 6-12 This fun program will introduce and demonstrate the basic skills of soccer to include field positions and rules. Through fun & games, participants will have the opportunity to learn teamwork and sportsmanship. Students must wear sneakers and shin guards (soccer cleats optional); Students cannot eat 1hr prior to physical activity. FASHION DESIGN NEWARK Session I: NO CLASS Session III: Ages 8-10 Looking for that perfect outfit? Learn to make it yourself! This hands-on class teaches the students the basics of fashion design, sketching, sewing and gathering. From designing sunny shorts, breezy skirts and terrific tops to making some fun accessories such as belts, scarves, hats and hair pieces. The Fashion Instructors will guide students through every step of the process, from construction to final fitting and in the process they will create an amazing outfit they can showcase at the end of the program. This program in offered in conjunction with Hobbie Quest. Session II: Grades 3–4 Session III: Grades 4-5 Looking for something cool for this summer for your child? This two-week hands-on academic enrichment program supports science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Students will have an opportunity to work collaboratively on exciting projects that will ignite their curiosity. Learn about the engineering process as a means of solving many of today’s environmental challenges, become a crime scene investigator, explore space, build a geodesic dome or robotic friend, and conduct a chemistry experiment. These are just of few of the many experiences students will have as a part of our exciting STEM Summer Program. Students will apply their classroom activities and field experiments to design and construct projects for display at the end of each session. Recreational activities included. summer YOUTH PROGRAMS 2016 THE YOUNG ARTIST GRADES 1-4 (as of September) Session I: NO CLASS Session II: Grades 2-3 Session III: Grades 1-2 Creativity exists in everyone and for two weeks youth will explore their inner artistic abilities by recognizing their own style through imagination, interpretation, and perception. This interactive program emphasizes creativity and self-confidence while having fun by learning new ways to express artistically. It also features a variety of drawing lessons and art projects which will range in scope from uniquely designed journals to imaginative sculptures. Projects will be showcased at the end of each session. This program is offered in conjunction with KidzArt®; “If you can dream, You can draw.” Computers and recreational activities included. THE YOUNG JOURNALIST GRADES 3-8 (as of September) Session I: Grades 6-7 Session II: Grades 3-4 Session III: Grades 5-6 Do you have a writer at home or a photographer in the making? Let them put their talents to work! Youth will be exposed to the basics of journalism through practice, writing, reporting, layout with photos, design editing and interviewing. In addition, students will create a fun newsletter for the Summer Youth Program. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of the Windows environment and grade-level writing skills will be required. Computers and recreational activities included. THREE-WEEK SESSIONS SESSION I: July 5 – July 22 SESSION II: July 25 – August 12 MAKING MATH MATTER GRADES 3-6 (as of September) Session I: Grades 5-6 Session II: Grades 3-4 Learning math has never been so much fun. In this three-week program, youth will become math detectives as they acquire a firm command of math skills. They will be challenged with a variety of situations that can only be solved by utilizing problem - solving strategies. These fun activities include the use of manipulative math games, creative arts projects and computers. Recreational activities included. NEWARK READING ENRICHMENT GRADES 3-6 (as of September) Session I: Grades 3 - 4 Session II: Grades 5-6 This three-week program is designed to foster reading appreciation skills among participants and stress the enjoyment that can result from any reading style. Youth will develop literal, interpretive and evaluative skills through book reports, projects and computer activities. This program includes instruction in reading, writing, computers and creative arts. Recreational activities included. INFORMATION FOR PARENTS INFORMATION SESSIONS May 21 at 10am June 2 at 5:30pm Essex County College, Main Campus - Newark Multipurpose Room #3234, Green Area, 3rd Floor RSVP: (973) 877-3079 REGISTRATION Register by June 15 to avoid a $10 late registration fee In-person registration: Monday - Friday, 9am - 4:30pm Essex County College, Main Campus - Newark Room 3291, Yellow Area A 1/3 deposit at the time of registration is required; Payment plan available for the balance. TUITION AND FEES Two-week sessions: $350 per session Three-week sessions: $500 per session Family discount: Register two or more children (siblings) from a single family save 10% on tuition only for the second child and any additional siblings. MATERIALS Participants are required to bring basic supplies: a notebook, pens, pencils, crayons, etc. In addition, there is a $15 fee per student/per session to offset costs of materials provided for instruction. T-SHIRTS One t-shirt is included with the paid tuition. Extra t-shirts may be purchased for $10 each. Tshirts must be worn on Field Trips and Picture day (will be announced in advanced). FIELD TRIPS July 8, 15, 22, 29 and August 5 & 12 Fridays from 8:30am - 4pm our participants will board an air-conditioned bus, chaperoned by their teachers and staff. Authorizaton forms will be provided in-person. DROP-OFF & PICK-UP Students must be dropped off during breakfast times in the Cafeteria on the 2nd floor. Students must be picked up during dismissal times from their classroom, unless they are enrolled in Aftercare. Classroom locations will be provided. NOTE: due to July 4th observance, the Daily Schedule has been revised. Please refer to it for dates and times. Classroom locations will be provided. If your child needs to be picked up early, you must contact/stop by the office. During summer months, Essex County College is closed on Fridays, therefore, a $10 late fee will be charged if your child is not picked up by 4pm. AUTHORIZED PICK-UP Names and phone numbers of authorized individuals for pick-up must be provided. These persons must also show ID upon arrival. A form will be provided in-person. summer YOUTH PROGRAMS 2016 AFTERCARE Aftercare is available Monday through Thursday for an additional $25 per week. Aftercare is NOT available on Fridays. Aftercare request can be submitted in-person at the time of registration or one week prior to the week that is needed. MEALS Breakfast and lunch will be provided Monday through Thursday. A daily menu will be supplied during the parent meeting. Children should bring their own meals if they will not be eating what is on the menu. Those with food allergies should bring substitue meals when needed and this information should be noted on the Health History/Medical Form. Meals are NOT provided onI:Fridays; participants SESSION Julyall6 – Julyshould 24 bring their own lunch for field trips. SESSION II: July 27 – August 14 HEALTH HISTORY/ MEDICAL RELEASE This form must be completed at time of registration; listing all allergies, signed by parent or legal guardian and returned with a CURRENT copy of the child’s immunization record from their Physician. NOTE: Parent/guardian must administer medical injections or allergy kits to their children. Participants with inhalers, must be able to administer the dosage to his/herself, it must be labeled with their name and kept with the participant during program hours. STUDENT CONDUCT Upon registration, this form will be given and it should be reviewed by the parent with each participant. This is an agreement between the participant, parent and Summer Youth Program which states appropriate/acceptable behavior to be followed. All participants and parents must read, sign and return the student conduct form prior to start of their program. Breakfast, lunch and snack are prepared on-site for all children at no additional cost. The center is open from 8:30am – 6pm, Monday through Wednesday and Thursday, 8:30am-4:30pm during July and August. DAILY SCHEDULE FREE PLAY/ BEFORE CARE 8:00am-8:30am Children will be able to select puzzles, read books and table toys. Purpose: This time of the morning is for Social interaction, Self-Help Skills, Language Skills. You will see how mixing different media can stimulate your “out-of-the-box” thinking and turn unrelated things into visual masterpieces! THE SECRETS OF STORYTELLING Let your imagination work as you master the art of storytelling. Enhance your critical thinking skills while you analyze narratives of different storytelling genres including Scooby Doo the carton, Disney’s film (WALL E) and a few handpicked short stories. Learn how storytelling integrates key elements to creatively capture its audience while delivering its message. So future storytellers, get ready to work and have fun too! Scooby Doo, Where Are You? MAD SCIENCE Calling all Mad Scientists! Let’s venture into a world of fun and excitement enhanced with the basic science principles needed to create safe and exhilarating experiments such as tube tornadoes, rubbery eggs, slime and much, much more. So roll up your sleeves and get to work! A TASTE OF THE ARTS Calling all actors! This light-hearted course will limber your body, tone your vocal chords and strengthen your stage presence through fun and simple movement, voice and acting techniques. Enjoy the ambiance of the theater while you experience - A Taste of the Arts! Scratch is the wildly popular educational programming language used by millions of first-time learners in classrooms and homes worldwide. By dragging together colorful blocks of code, kids can learn computer programming concepts and make cool games and animations. ZUMBA FITNESS FOR KIDS Designed exclusively for kids, Zumbatomic Fitness classes “rock” with specially choreographed, kid-friendly routines set to music that kids really love. Have fun dancing to the beat and getting some heart healthy exercise, too. STRIKE UP THE BAND Whether you’re an accomplished musician or a musical novice, our method of music instruction focuses on a non-notational approach to learning music. Explore your favorite, popular music styles such as: rock, blues, rap, hip-hop or reggae, while developing your performance, composition and improvisation skills, too.
