January 2015 Principalʼs Message I hope that all of you had a wonderful holiday with your families. It seems hard to believe that Christmas is over and we are already half way through the school year! Now that winter is here, please remember to check the TV for any delays or closings. Children also need to remember to eat breakfast before coming to school since we don’t serve school breakfast on delay days. Dates to Remember Jan. 9 Jan. 19 Jan. 22 Jan. 27 Jan. 30 Grade cards go out No School Martin Luther King Day Market Day Deadline Market Day Pickup Sentinel Students share with first grade students. We tend to have many transportation changes happening at this time of year. Please remember that any changes must be made before noon, otherwise children will need to follow their usual transportation routine. Winter is here Thank you for your cooperation! Ms. Stahl A message from your Superintendent The wonderful thing about schools is that we have two new beginnings, one in the fall and one in the winter. As we return to school from our winter break, we look forward to a new beginning. I wish our students, parents, and staff had a restful break and a return where all are rejuvenated. -Respectfully, Dr. Wheatley Market day pick up Thank you for supporting our PTO with your purchases from Market day. Your next purchase will be available for pick up on Tuesday, January 27, from 2:30 until 4:30. Please stop in the Music room to pick up your orders. No School School will be closed January 19 in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Below are some cold weather suggestions as you prepare your student for school during this chilly winter season. Recess: Your student will go outside often during the winter months. Please make sure your child dresses warmly by wearing a winter coat, hat, gloves/mittens and scarves. Your student cannot go outside for recess if they do not have the proper winter attire. Morning Arrival: Before school, students are allowed into the building after 7:30 and not before. Please remember this when dropping your student off in the morning. School Delay or Cancellation: An instant alert will be sent around 6:00 am for a delay or cancellation. To be notified, you can sign up on line by going to: https://instantalert.honeywell.com/ to receive a message by email or cell phone. You can also listen to 1600AM WTTF or 103.7FM WCKY as well as any of the Toledo Television Stations. Thank you Thank you Washington students and parents who graciously participated in the Salvation Army food drive. Because of your generosity, we donated over 12 boxes of food for families to have a wonderful holiday meal for themselves. Thank you for showing your holiday spirit this year. Tiffin City Schools Accepting Kindergarten Registrations The Tiffin City School District is seeking enrollment information for girls and boys registering for the 2015-2016 school year. All Kindergarten classes will be held at Washington K-1 located at 151 Elmer Street. Any child residing in the Tiffin City School District who will be five years of age by August 1, 2015 is eligible to enroll. Ohio law requires kindergarten attendance prior to enrollment in first grade. Pre-kindergarten screening will be held May 7 and May 8, 2015 for children enrolling next fall. All parents and guardians of registered children will be informed by letter in mid April as to the date and time of the screenings being held at the Lincoln Building. To register your child you may contact Washington K-1 by calling 419-447-1072 or Pat Smith at Tiffin City Schools Administration Office, by calling 419-447-2515. Washington Winter Wonderland Washington Winter Wonderland was a huge success. All had fun helping our students make their special holiday memories. Healthy New Year’s Resolutions The start of January brings us another New Year and that means people are making New Year’s resolutions. January is the perfect time for children, with the help of their parents, to also reflect upon the last year and to start good habits or break bad ones. I encourage your family to sit down and talk about your health goals for the New Year, and that should include your children, as even little ones should think about taking care of themselves. Here are a few New Year’s resolution suggestions for younger children, from the American Academy of Pediatrics: • Wash your hands after going to the bathroom and before eating. • Brush your teeth twice a day. • Drink water, low-fat, or fat free milk every day. Limit sugary sodas and fruit drinks. • Eat AT LEAST two fruits and two vegetables every day. (Aim for as many different colors of fruits and vegetables as possible.) • Get out and move! Find a sport or physical activity you like and do it as much as possible. Children need 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity EVERY day to achieve and maintain good health. • Wear a helmet when riding a bike and your seatbelt when riding in the car. • And most importantly, be kind to others! No one likes a bully. To help you achieve your goals of becoming a more active, healthier family for the New Year, I attached 40 tips to help keep your family moving indoors and out, 40 Tips for an Active Family. ALL IN, YOU CAN DO IT!!! Healthfully Yours, Miss Ellis, Physical Education Teacher
