What is Incomat?
Incomat – a construction system for earthwork
engineering, foundation engineering and hydraulic engineering – is the technically reliable
and economic alternative to conventional slope
and bed protection systems using geotextiles
and rock fill.
Incomat consists of two very strong synthetic
fabric plies specially linked with each other as
the formwork which is filled with impermeable,
high-strength concrete.
Incomat is an economic, environmentally safe,
durable and versatile construction material.
Where is Incomat used?
Incomat is used to protect slopes and beds of
canals, rivers and other flowing bodies of water
and on sea coasts for dikes, embankments and
jetties, for hurricane tide barriers, outlet structures, manmade islands, pipelines and for inshore and offshore structures in general.
Incomat can be ideally adapted to the existing
surface and thereby provides specific erosion
protection for unprofiled natural beds and slopes, even in areas below water where access is
difficult.
Incomat adapts perfectly to changes in surface conditions caused by settlement and soil
redistribution after it has been installed.
Who can use Incomat?
Any specialised building contractors can utilize
this construction system according to requirement using their own staff. On request HaTe will
provide experienced consulting engineers who
will accompany projects from the planning
stage through to realization.
What is Incomat needed for?
HaTe supply the pretailored Incomat fabric
and the know-how for its use. The filling material is concrete mortar prepared with sand,
cement and water. Sand and water are very
often available locally and cement can generally be obtained in sacks or from silos. The
concrete is prepared on site in normal commercially available mixers. The mixing plant with
concrete pump and ancillary equipment is installed either on land or an a floating platform.
How is Incomat used?
The most suitable type of Incomat is selected
taking into account the requirements of local
conditions and the structural/dynamic analysis.
The fabrics are manufactured in the factory and
pretailored in individual segments. At the installation site they are sewn together with special
manual sewing machines or linked together
with industrial zips into a single unit before
being finished to suit any curvatures, bends,
recesses and other unevenesses.
The unfilled Incomat fabric is laid either by
hand or with lightweight working aids, such as
rollers or spreader bars. The fabric formwork is
then filled with concrete by continuous pumping through hoses.
If Incomat is used in deep water or where
there is a high velocity of flow, fully automatic
installation equipment can be used, whilst
divers monitor the accuracy of laying and filling.
Incomat starts protecting the subgrade
against erosion the minute it is installed.

To assist planning engineers and project
owners in preparing their invitations to tender and special proposals we shall now
summarize the important characteristics
which a concrete mat should have:
- excellent durability under load by using
fabrics with high tensile strength, adequate stretching ability and low creep
tendency;
- erosion-resistance and high resistance
to abrasion by sand and shifting silt;
- biological long-term resistance to UV
radiation and chemical/biological attack;
- flexibility and positional stability in order
to adapt to the uneven surface of slopes
and beds;
- the ability to prevent surface erosion:
mechanical filtering efficiency to retain
in-situ soil and hydraulic filtering efficiency to prevent uneven water pressure on either side of the mat.
The functions to be fulfilled by the mat and
the loads it has to withstand must be
observed most precisely when planning
the nature of the project, how it is to be
executed and the method of installation
to be used.
Incomat fulfils these conditions by the
method of manufacture and assembly.

Incomat comes in two fundamentally different versions:
1. The permeable, flexible mat
with non-uniform cross-sectional heights of the blocks
and predetermined breaking
points. This is achieved by
varying the length of the spacing elements and diagonal
bands between the upper
and lower fabric layers.
2. The impermeable mat with a
uniform cross-section, produced by using spacing elements of equal length
between the fabric layers,
providing impermeability.
Combinations of both types
can be supplied.

Incomat is an economic, reliable and technically simple system of
protection against erosion and serves to consolidate the subgrade.

Standard
®
The essential function of this type of Incomat is as a sealing layer. Two layers of
synthetic material connected with highstrength spacing elements of equal length,
which are worked into the fabric in pairs
in a square grid pattern, guarantee a uniform crosssection after filling with
concrete.
By altering the length of
the spacing elements, mat
thicknesses of 7.5, 10, 15, 20 and
up to 60 cm can be produced with

area weights of approx. 150 – 1,200 kg/m .
Incomat Standard is used primarily for
sealing slopes and beds of inland waters,
above all wherever the natural protection
of the ground is inadequate and water
pressure is too great.
Incomat Standard has proved especially
successful for lining the beds of tunnels,
culverts and other structures which have
to be protected from above by a sealing
layer. This type of mat is also installed to
seal fixed weirs, pumping stations, catch
basins, sluiceways and embankment
linings above and below water.
Incomat Standard has also proved invaluable in industrial plants where aggressive waste fluids have to be discharged through open channels into catch basins
and treatment plants. Here the entire discharge section and cross-section of the
basin are completely lined with the mat with no joins in order to protect the subgrade and the ground water.
Incomat Standard can be used with successful results on very steep slopes and
even vertically for sealing the subgrade
and foundations which need protection.
Lining of irrigation installations in areas
which suffer from water shortage, e.g. the
flow channels in oases and adjoining
desert areas. Here Incomat Standard’s
watertightness helps to ensure that the
precious water does not seep away in the
channels but reaches the fertile agricultural land where it is desperately needed.
Incomat Standard adapts to any corners,
curvatures, bends and unevennesses in
the subgrade while it is being installed
and once hardened it forms a durable and
impermeable protective layer.
Incomat has provided permanent solutions for many unusual applications. Here
its excellent static strength and corresponding coefficient of friction are clearly
demonstrated.
The continuous filling of the fabric shown
here produces a concrete with high compressive strength. In conjunction with spacing elements for reinforcement the fabric
improves the bending strength of the
structure.
Incomat Standard can be combined with
other types of Incomat systems for maximum possible flexibility in hydraulic engineering.

Flex
®
The fundamental purpose of Incomat
Flex is to provide resistance against
extreme hydrostatic loads. This is achieved by its heavy weight, all-over coverage
of the subgrade and two-dimensional pliability to accommodate large deformations.
The cracks thus caused in the concrete
within the predetermined breaking points
are compensated by the reinforcing fabric
bands. These ensure that the mat remains
fully functional even if the top fabric layer
should be damaged. Woven-in drainage
areas and a non-woven fabric with high filtering capability fitted below the mat over
the entire surface guarantee that Incomat
Flex protects the subgrade even under
extremely large hydrostatic loads.
Incomat Flex combines all the
advantages of a high-quality protection system in an economic
product:
The heavy area weight of 300 – 1,200 kg/
m2 is achieved by using 15 – 60 cm mat
sizes. The individual slab size is between
50 x 50 cm and 180 x 200 cm according
to application. The desired two-dimensional pliability is produced by the lines of
concrete with a smaller cross-section between the mat sections which act as predetermined breaking points and are created by the design of the fabric formwork. In
the event of major changes in the subgrade they fulfil the function of rupture
zones for the concrete.
The interlinking of the slabs is maintained
at the predetermined breaking points
because the fabric, spacing elements and
reinforcement bands are capable of a high
degree of elongation and can therefore absorb large transverse forces.

Pipelines can be protected with Incomat
Flex against buoyancy, damage by
anchors or trawl nets and corrosion by fitting pipe saddles and protective lagging.
Incomat Flex can even be installed in
water 30 m deep and with velocities of
flow of more than 1 m/sec. using special
installation devices.
An Incomat fabric with a surface area of

120 m when laid out takes up less than
3
0.2 m space when folded up for transportation and weighs only 53 kg.
This also
applies if extreme
external forces damage the
top fabric layer. Incomat Flex
remains fully functional at all times.
The smaller cross-section at the predetermined breaking points does not impede
the process of filling the mat.
The concrete used to fill Incomat Flex has
a high compressive strength and density.
The composite construction of the concrete and the vertical and diagonal bands
woven into the fabric for reinforcement
produce a high bending strength.
Incomat Flex guarantees permanent protection even under extreme hydrostatic
loads. Incomat Flex is used for lining slopes and beds of canals, flowing bodies of
water and on coastlines. It protects, for
example, against damage caused by the
passage of shipping and the consequent
hydrodynamic processes: turbulence
from propeller slip stream, bow
waves, stern waves and transverse waves, breakers, and possibly reduce the damage caused by
ship impact. Incomat Flex protects structures against loads caused by large
waves and high velocities of flow. It stabilizes the foundations of hurricane tide barriers and the adjoining bed areas.
Incomat Flex as a reliable means of protecting a bank slope made of loose sand
adjoining an industrial harbour with heavy
shipping traffic on the River Warri in Nigeria. The mats were laid right down to the
toe of the river bank 12 m below water.
The size of mixing plants and concrete
pumps depends on the area of mat to be
filled and the volume of concrete.

Crib
®
This grid profile mat is used to provide
technical/environmental slope protection
for lakes and flowing bodies of waters in
the water-washed area and above the
waterline.
In earthwork engineering it is utilized as a
covering for incisions in slopes to protect
them against erosion and to ensure that
the top soil remains in place.
Incomat Crib consists of lattice elements
filled with concrete which are interlinked
without any longitudinal or transverse
joints and encompass open spaces. The
latter can be filled with top soil and seeded or plant boxes can be placed in them
immediately after installing the mat.
Incomat Crib provides an ideal habitat for
fauna and flora. The lattice-type mat enables engineers to plan and implement protection measures to solve many different
types of erosion problems while taking full
account of aesthetic and environmental
considerations.
After only a short time the lattice elements
become overgrown producing an uninterrupted area of green which can be maintained with lawn mowers and gardening
tools.
Incomat Crib can be joined without any
seam to a bank protection structure consisting of Standard or Flex mats.
In this way it is possible to extend the entire cross-sectional profile of flowing
bodies of waters to produce the required
structural and ecological conditions.
Incomat Slab
The slab-type mat features outstanding
two-dimensional pliability and should be
used on very soft subgrades which are
susceptible to settlement, such as silt and
mud (clay containing silt)
Drainage strips between the slabs ensure
good water permeability.
Incomat Slab is used in canal construction, stream engineering and coastal engineering as a dike or toe apron for slopes
and beds.
In contrast to Incomat Flex the individual
blocks are only connected be »empty
areas« consisting of two linked fabric
layers. The mat thickness can be varied
as with all Incomat types.
Incomat FP
Filter-point mats are installed wherever
relatively small hydrostatic loads occur.
The rigid mat has filtering points offset at
regular intervals with a small open area.
The cobblestone type design of the mat
makes it easily adaptable to all kinds of
slope profile. It also reduces the volume of
flow of incoming and receding waves and
of flowing water. Incomat FP is especially
suitable for lining relatively small outlet
and drainage structures.
Incomat Tube
The tubular mat is recommended for situations where larger hydraulic pressures are
to be expected, since it ensures a higher
degree of permeability yet has a comparable weight to the filter-point mat.
Neither the filter-point mat nor the tubular
mat should be used if significant settlement is likely after installation since both
systems are rigid and permeable.
