Welcome to
Portage Lakes
The Portage Lakes district in northeast Ohio is
comprised of parts of the City of New Franklin,
Coventry Township, and the City of Green.
Located about six miles south of downtown Akron
and 17 miles north of downtown Canton, “the
Lakes” lacks any true political boundaries but is
well defined by the zip code 44319.
The population is 22,000 people, with 18.3
square miles of land area and over 2,000 acres of
water. The Lakes district is roughly bordered by
Waterloo Road on the north, East Comet Road on
the south, Manchester Road on the west and South
Arlington Road on the east.
The Lakes have a lot to offer year round and
are a fantastic place to visit. Water recreation
is a top activity with the 800 acres of the “main
chain” of Portage Lakes offering many bars and
restaurants, a 900 foot long public beach, three
marinas to rent pontoons and several boat ramps
to launch your own craft.
Often thought of as just a summer playground,
once the lakes freeze over, it’s only a matter of
time until the snowmobilers and ice fishermen
come out, and you’ll even find residents making
skating rinks and playing broomball on the ice.

From the Publisher
No one needs to be reminded that this past winter
made it feel like we were living in a real-life version
of the movie Frozen. But, it didn’t just feel like it,
the numbers back it up. For anyone 36 years old
or younger, 2013-14 had the most measured winter
snowfall in their lifetime. You’re probably saying to
yourself, “That’s wonderful, don’t remind me about it.”
It’s worth referencing because the severity of the
winter season opened up possibilities that we don’t
always find on Portage Lakes. In the winter of 201011, I was introduced to the game of broomball and
played half a dozen times. The following two winters the ice was solid enough to
play just once. But this year, we took full advantage once again.
It was wonderful seeing Portage Lakes turned into a winter playground. You
saw snow mobiles and four wheelers zooming across the ice at all times, and
families were out cross country skiing and ice skating. In my opinion, since
winter is going to be cold, make it cold enough to give us solid ice so we can go
out and play on the lake 12 months a year.

Planning A Visit
So Many Ways to Spend a Day
Start off your morning with a nice family breakfast at the Coventry Diner or
Lukity’s, schedule a pontoon boat tour with Portage Lakes Cruises or rent one
fromt Dusty’s Landing, Kieffer Marine or Pier 619. Go for lunch at Dano’s,
Dietz’s, Nicoletti’s, or Upper Deck. Stop at the State Park Beach and go for
a hike or play a round of disc golf. After returning the boat, grab a pizza from
Gionino’s or Guiseppe’s, and finish it all off with an ice cream cone from Biggins’.
Looking to try out something new? Give the Portage Lakes Stand Up Guys a
call and they’ll drop off paddleboards at
you house or meet you at a launch ramp.
Those are just a few of the possibilities,
and that’s on a day when there aren’t
even any special events scheduled.
While the lakes are a focal point
of activity, it’s not just summer water
recreation that makes ours a vibrant
community. There’s lots going on year
round, much of it driven by the non-profit
organizations that make this a great place to visit, and better place to live.

Forty eight local groups are profiled in the Organizations chapter and invariably
one will be missed. Whether you’re interested in sailing, knitting, polka music or
anything in between, there’s likely an organization for you to join. If there’s not
already a group that meets your interests, we encourage you to start one. While
some groups have been around for 75 years or more,
others that have started in the last few
years have enjoyed great success.

Calendar of Events
Portage Lakes Summer Games
Last summer, Portage Lakes residents and visitors saw two inaugural events
take place within 24 hours of one another. Pav’s Creamery hosted their first
annual Ice Cream Eating Competition to benefit the March of Dimes on a
Saturday, and the following day, Two Men and a Truck hosted their first annual
Cardboard Boat Race to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Akron.
Both events were well executed; they
were great fun for competitors and great
entertainment for spectators. However,
there were hopes of higher attendance
and larger fundraising totals.
The organizers for both competitions
were just beginning to think about this
year when the Portage Lakes Community
Council approached them with an idea on
collaboration. The Council is celebrating
65 years of service and it serves as anchor of our community by bringing
together organizations and business to advocate for our common interests.
17 men and three women who competed in the adult age group. The Overall
winner was Nick Doughty of Wadsworth, who finished 20 containers. What did
he win? Free Pav’s ice cream for a year. Yes, $5 worth of ice cream every day,
365 days of the year.
The Cardboard Boat Race was as
much spectacle as it was competition.
Six entries were sponsored by
businesses and they competed not only
for fastest down the course, but there
were trophies for: most creative, fastest,
slowest, best sinking, and demolition
derby winner. The trophies were made
out of cardboard of course! This year,
the event will feature similar trophies and will have categories for boats built in
advance as well as the opportunity to build your boat on the day of the event.
Also featured at the event, a Chinese Auction where entrants can purchase
raffle tickets and enter to win valuable prize packages. Food will be available for
purchase, or bring a picnic for the family and make a day of it!

Working together under the umbrella of the Council, the two competitions
will be combined into the Portage Lakes Summer Games. This innovative way
of working was based on the idea that together they can do more. The real
beneficiary is the Portage Lakes, as the organizers hope the Summer Games will
grow into another signature event for our community.
The businesses and charities involved in the event see the collaboration as
a way to better encourage attendance, promote the event, share expenses
and increase fundraising dollars for everyone. Organizers hope to add other
elements to the Summer Games, perhaps for 2014 and certainly in future years.

The summer games will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at the swim
beach in Portage Lakes State Park. Full event details are still being worked on
and will be published at www.PortageLakesSummerGames.com when finalized.
The Ice Cream Eating Contest challenges contestants to strive to eat as many
four-ounce containers of ice cream as they can within a five-minute time frame.
There are different age groups for kids to compete as well. In 2013 there were

Akron Sail and Power Squadron Celebrates 75 Years
The Akron Sail and Power
Squadron (ASPS) was
founded on May 9, 1939 by
a group of 14 Akron area
boaters. It was founded as
a unit of the United States
Power Squadrons, which itself
was founded in 1914. Today,
the United States Power Squadrons has over 400 local squadrons and 40,000
members. Akron has around 220 members and is the 15th largest in the US.
ASPS is dedicated to the principles of Safe Boating. They offer boating classes
to the public as well as advanced boating courses to their members. Additionally,
they conduct many year round social and civic activities. Members have boats
ranging from person watercrafts to various length power and sailboats either
trailered or moored. Boat ownership is not required for membership.

sports will teach you how to safely
navigate the water with a canoe or kayak.
You will learn about the different types
of paddle crafts and the safety gear
necessary to have onboard.
Classes are held locally at Craftsmen
Park at 4450 Rex Lake Dr. After a onehour discussion of equipment, techniques,
and safety considerations, you head outside to learn about the equipment and
then you spend the second half of the class out paddling. ASPS provides kayaks
and all other necessary equipment, or you can bring your own.
Seminars are limited to 10 students each, so sign up early. Non-ASPS
members pay $25 for the class. To register, call Robert Ball at 330-322-7975.
Classes are offered on a Wednesday night, and the 2014 dates are:

achieve that, they offer many boating education courses including:
• Seamanship - Learn how to properly
tie a cleat hitch, clove hitch, stopper knot
and bowline. Learn how to properly and
securely anchor your boat in all seabed
and weather conditions.
• Piloting - For cruisers and blue water
sailors, learn about tides and currents and
plotting a course allowing for their effects
to safely arrive at your destination.
• Navigation - Learn how to navigate the oceans using a sextant, stars,
planets, sun and moon.
• Cruise Planning - Learn how to plan a safe and worry-free three year aroundthe-world cruise or a three day weekend cruise across Lake Erie.
• Many others - Learn marine engine maintenance, marine electronics, sailing
and weather – all instructor led, all professionally designed courses.
With participation in paddle sports growing, one course with growing popularity

Formed in 1936, AYC is a home away from

club opens in April and remains open until
November. The friendly, family atmosphere

Portage Lakes Rowing Association
PLRA is the only organized rowing club
in the Akron / Canton vicinity. Founded in
2005, PLRA has averaged 65 members
the last two years. They offer programs for
both sculling and sweep rowing, and have
different practices tailored for competitive
rowers, or masters rowers desiring a lower
intensity workout, and a dedicated program
for beginners. This summer, Introduction
to Rowing classes will be held Saturday,
August 2nd and Monday, August 4th.

In May, 2007 an enthusiastic group of
Breast Cancer survivors picked up their
paddles and launched Ohio’s First Breast
Cancer Dragon Boat on Rex Lake. Twenty
paddlers sit two abreast in a 40 foot boat
with its colorful dragon head on the front. A
coxswain and drummer complete the crew.

Camp Quality Ohio
The Akron Rotary Camp for Children with
Special Needs sits on a six acre site on
Rex Lake. In cooperation with the Akron
Area YMCA its purpose is to provide
a traditional camping experience for
children and adults with disabilities while
emphasizing socialization, independence,
and entertainment.
A week-long camping experience and
year round support system for children
with cancer and their families. Each child
is assigned a companion who provides
support and encouragement during the
week. They spend twenty-four hours a day
together which usually results in friendships
that last long after camp has ended. The
camp is held at Craftsmen Park and this
year will run July 13-19.

Craftsmen Park
A non-profit administered by the Free
and Accepted Masons of the 21st district.
Located on 68 acres on Rex Lake, the
park offers a 50 site campground, 100+
boat slips, cabins and halls for rent. They

MAPS Air Museum
For someone who isn’t an aviation or
military history enthusiast, the minute you
walk into the main hanger at the MAPS Air
Museum you are instantly impressed by
the 41 airplanes that fill the space and the
countless volunteers constantly at work.
MAPS impresses the novice visitor as being a one-of-a-kind museum, but
would you be surprised to learn there are over 200 aerospace museums in
the US and 13 in the state of Ohio alone? Maybe MAPS isn’t so unique? Kim
Kovesci, the Executive Director of the museum, will tell you of a recent visitor
who has been to 166 air museums before MAPS and said with all sincerity that
the Gallery of Heroes room at MAPS is the finest display he has ever seen.
There are other air museums, but MAPS is among the best.
had been on display at a museum at Normandy for over fifty years. The uniform
belonged to a local veteran and the family requested it to be moved to MAPS.
Perhaps the most important part of MAPS is the society. In 2013, MAPS grew
to 580 memberships corresponding to over 820 individuals. These members
are active with over 50,000 documented volunteer hours in 2013 alone. Who
better to hear the history from than a 94-year-old veteran who flew 32 missions
in WWII and whose bomber jacket is on display at the museum? Those doing
the restoration are people like Kim Kovesci, who got involved got involved with
the museum after his son told him about
an A7 that MAPS had received from the
USS Intrepid Museum. During Vietnam,
Kim was assigned to the USS Saratoga
as a technician on the A7. Who better to
work on restoring such a plane?
MAPS was founded in 1990, and it
has experienced tremendous growth of
late. There were 6,200 visitors in 2009,
growing to 28,000 in 2013. Located 15
minutes from Portage Lakes, MAPS is worth checking out. Visit them at 2260

MAPS is unique, and to understand their mission, it’s worth starting with their
name: Military Aviation Preservation Society.
The development of aircraft technology
throughout history was focused around
military aircraft because of their
importance during WWI and WWII. In
the main hangar of the museum there are
two craft right near one another that were
built just 30 years apart. One is the Martin
Glider, built in 1908, it has a wooden
frame with canvas skin, while the other
is the B-26 Marauder used during WWII.
The progress in aviation was a major contributor to winning WWII.
The focus of the museum is on the history of aviation and they display aircraft
and artifacts from the first days of flight through jet fighters, with everything in
between, including the gondola from Goodyear’s Spirit of Akron blimp. They
have an inventory of 41 aircraft at various stages of restoration.
MAPS is continuously working to preserve items and stories associated with
the history of aviation and they have even partnered with a local high school for
a program on US History. Many of the displays and memorabilia are from local
veterans and major events in our nation’s history. There’s an actual piece of the
USS Arizona that classifies MAPS as a war memorial, as well as a uniform that

he was better off with the license going to

the neighbors, RC promised
he would go down the street
each day and clean up any
litter. The club now had a
liquor license, and a few
years later it was opened to
the public.

Known locally as “Big Chief”,

American portaging a canoe,
beginning the long portage

The northern terminus of the
Portage Path is at the big bend
of the Cuyahoga River, while
the southern terminus is at the
northern tip of Long Lake channel on the
Tuscarawas River.

Purple Martin Sanctuary
at State Mill Launch Ramp
The Portage Lakes Purple Martin
Association maintains 30 total poles, each
with up to 12 gourds that serve as homes
for purple martins. The parking lot at the
State Mill Launch Ramp off State Mill Road
near Alma Avenue is home to nine poles.
When the weather turns wet and cold the
purple martins struggle to find insects
to feed on, and many can starve. So
volunteers will fling scrambled eggs
into the air with plastic
spoons for the birds to eat.
In 2009 the recipe was
modified to put granulated
egg shells in the scrambled
eggs which appear to help
the birds’ nutrition.

Statue of Liberty
On the south shore of Mud
Lake where it meets Turkeyfoot,
stands a replica “Statue of
Liberty Enlightening the World”
or as it is better known, the
Statue of Liberty. It serves as
a recognizable landmark for
boaters in the area. In 1995,
Betty McCune commissioned
the statue as a birthday gift for
her husband Bob who was a
Korean War Veteran and had a
great dedication to flying the flag
on the 60’ flagpole that stands over Lady
Liberty. The statue stands the same size as
a person who is six feet fall.
The Princess was owned by John Roessner
since 1980. For the first four years, John
docked the boat at the Harbor Inn. Then for

Tepee at Nimisila Campground
It was during the summer of 1937 that a
group of sailors met beneath a large tree
at Kepler’s Landing on the south shore of
Turkeyfoot Lake an established the South
Shore Yacht Club.
Portage Lakes State Park offer visitors a
variety of outdoor recreational experiences.
One of the more unique attractions is
the ability to rent a tepee at Nimisila
Campground for the night. Two tepees are
available from May 1 through October 31.
Each tepee is 10’ x 10’ set on a wooden
platform. Amenities include fire ring,
cooking grill, picnic table, patio table and
two chairs. The campground entrance
is located at 5550 Christman Road and

By 1938, the club had 13 paid members
and regular meetings were being held. At
the end of the season, winter meetings
were initiated and it was at the first of these
meetings that plans and an estimate for
building the clubhouse were presented.
Members agreed that a 16 by 24 foot
structure should be built, provided that
the necessary funds could be obtained.
Fundraising was discussed and a raffle
among members netted one dollar and forty
cents for the treasury.
By the summer of 1941, what is now
referred to as the main clubhouse was built.

Turkeyfoot Island Clubhouse
The Franklin Park Civic Center, “The Tudor
House,” is a beautiful 20 room, two story,
brick and stucco mansion sites on 5.8
acres, adjacent to Portage Lakes State
Park and has 334 feet of frontage on the
west shore of Turkeyfoot Lake. It is a
distinctive example of the Tudor Revival
style of architecture, with
its arched doorways,
carved wood staircase,
prominent Tudor Arch
fireplace with oak
paneling and exposed
beams in the living room.
The exterior also reflects
Tudor design in its gabled
front entry stone trim,
massive stone and brick
chimneys, slate roof with
prominent cross gables and copper gutters.
The gardens include an embanked grotto,
constructed of stone. On April 20, 1995, the
Frank Mason Raymond House was entered
into the National Register of Historic Places.
The clubhouse was built in 1906 by
Frank Lahm, originally the sole owner of
Turkeyfoot Island. Additions over the years
have made it a unique gathering place
for Turkeyfoot Island Club members and
their guests. The covered porch and patio
provide excellent
views of boating
and sunsets on
Turkeyfoot Lake.

Ron Slater’s Professional Guide Service
For Ron Slater, a childhood passion has turned into a career, and he’s doing it
from a spot he used to frequent as a child. Ron grew up in West Akron and his
dad brought him out to Portage Lakes as a boy, where they sometimes rented
canoes from Burch’s Landing.
Today, Ron lives down the block from the old Burch’s location and three years
ago he saw the For Rent sign the day it went up at Burch’s. Several businesses
were interested, and Ron managed to get a deal worked out with Ross and
Laurie Kieffer who own the building. It helped that Ron had a track record
running a bait shop as he operated Ron Slater’s Pro’s Choice Lure Bait & Tackle
from 1990-94. Ron opened Portage Lakes Bait & Tackle on July 1, 2011.
When asked how many fish he has caught in his life, it’s a little hard to figure
out. Ron’s dad used to take him and his big brother fishing at least twice a week
all summer long. They would fish for anything that would bite. Whether or not
they caught anything, it was always exciting to go out with their dad. These days,
Ron figures that he catches about 900 bass annually. The largest bass he has
caught was 7 pounds, 2 ounces, which he’s done twice.
Trips can be arranged for beginners or to help experienced anglers refine their
skills. Most trips are about four hours long and they’re most frequently 1-on-1
outings, but Ron can also take two anglers at a time. Anglers usually provide
their own rods, but equipment is available for novices to borrow.
It’d be hard to ask for a more
experienced guide than Ron. He’s
a regular contributor to The Angler
Magazine, he does countless seminars,
appears on television shows, and
provides the fishing reports for The
Plain Dealer and Channels 3 and 5. He
fishes nearly every day and he talks
with customers to stay on top of the
fish to know what they’re doing all the
time. That’s essential to helping him run his guide service to ensure successful
outings. People respect Ron’s opinion and know they can depend on him. When
they come out for a guide service trip they won’t be wasting their time or money.
Ron’s passion is bass, but whatever you’re looking to catch, Ron can help you

Ron has competed professionally for years as a member of the B.A.S.S.
(Bass Anglers Sportsman Society) and N.P.A.A. (National Professional Anglers
Association). He still fishes tournaments and when he turns the key, it’s all
business. But sometimes when you love
a sport such as bass fishing, you reach a
point in your life when teaching becomes
more important than competing.
Ron will never forget the first trip that he
guided. They had a very successful five
hours of fishing on Mogadore Reservoir.
As they were headed back in, his client
said he had a great time catching bass,
but he was after crappie. Ron felt terrible
and turned the boat around and headed back out.
In 2012, Ron introduced the Professional Guide Service that leaves from the
Bait & Tackle store. That first year, he guided 62 trips and in 2013 he led 163
trips. He figures about 180 trips a year his capacity. Sometimes he gets pretty
busy, and makes three outings in a single day.

Bisesi’s Bicycle & Fitness: Celebrating 30 Years
In talking with him about the history of his business and his passion for cycling,
Sam Bisesi flashes back to his days as a child growing up in downtown Akron.
By the wide grin that spreads across his face, it’s apparent he still
has a vibrant mental picture of those
days when his bike “was a ticket to go
places.”
Though he remembers always cycling
as a child and teenager, there was a
period when Sam didn’t have a bike. He
started a career at Babcock & Wilcox in
1968, married his wife Marci who runs
the business with him, and started a
family. Then about forty years ago, Sam
and Marci decided to get one another bikes for Christmas. On Christmas Eve
they assembled the bikes, and because it was unseasonably warm that night,
they actually got out for a test ride.
When they opened their doors, their
youngest son Joey was just one year
old and Marci had a crib set up in a back
room. Marci ran the store during the
day; selling bikes, scheduling repairs,
and handling the business operations. In
the evenings, Sam would go to the shop
and work on repairs. Business was good,
and in 1988, after four years of renting
they bought the building at their current
location of 5164 S. Main Street.
Over time, their business grew along with the expansion of the bicycle industry.
When they started, there was basically one bike they sold – a 10-speed – and
the only option for customers was a red one or a blue one. Then along came the
mountain bike, then the hybrid, and now Sam says you have “hybrids of hybrids
of hybrids!” In 1992, they tripled the size of their store to hold more inventory and
today they also carry fitness equipment such as ellipticals and treadmills.
In 1998, Sam retired from B&W after 30 years. After 14 years running
operations during the day by herself, Marci now has Sam by her side throughout
the day. When you walk into Bisesi’s, you’ll find the quintessential “Mom and
When spring arrived, they started riding more frequently near their home in
Goodyear Heights. The first long ride they took was about seventeen miles and
about three-quarters of the way through the ride, Marci took a break, sat down,
and told Sam to go get the car and pick her up. That didn’t happen, as she found
the energy to finish the ride.
As their fondness of cycling grew, they upgraded their equipment and Sam
always did his own repairs. Then one
day, Sam realized he could do repairs for
others and turn their knowledge of bikes
into a business venture. After all, in his
day job he worked on nuclear reactors,
so repairing bikes would be simple by
comparison.
They considered simply starting the
fledgling business out of their garage, but
they also wanted to sell new equipment.
In order to buy wholesale from a manufacturer, they needed to have a storefront.
So in 1984, they rented a shop on S. Main Street and Bisesi’s was in business.

Outside of the shop, their passion for cycling remains. Two years ago they
rode the challenging Virginia Creeper trail in both directions. Sam says 98
percent of people take a shuttle bus to the top and just enjoy the ride down. Sam
and Marci successfully rode it in both directions, despite a pause for rest like
during their first long ride together over three decades ago.

Land Conservancy and Museum Partner to Protect
Rare Summit County Bog
Western Reserve Land Conservancy and the Cleveland Museum of Natural
History are preserving a rare tamarack bog in Summit County, one that is home
to 11 rare plant and animal species.
The 58-acre Long Lake Bog, located in Coventry Township, has been
permanently preserved through a partnership between the nonprofit Land
Conservancy and the Museum. In March 2014, the Land Conservancy
helped the Museum purchase the land with the help of Clean Ohio and Ohio
Environmental Protection
Agency funding and will hold a
conservation easement on the
property.
The Museum will own and
manage the bog, which is
adjacent to Portage Lakes
State Park and Portage
Lake Wetland, a state nature
preserve about eight miles
southwest of downtown Akron.
Bissell said the Museum has
inventoried all glacial lakes within
Portage Lakes State Park during
the last 25 years. In 1959, Museum
staffers found a rare bullhead lily in
an area adjacent to Long Lake Bog;
the plant is known to have been
growing at only one other site in
Ohio, Magee Marsh on Lake Erie
The Bog wetlands are in the highest quality category established by the state
and include the tamarack forest along with surrounding Alder shrub fen, greater
bur-reed meadows and fen sedge meadow habitats. The property is home to
11 plant and animal species that are listed as rare, endangered or threatened,
including the globally rare bog bluegrass and state-threatened bog birch.

“We are thrilled to be able to
play a role in the preservation
of this amazing property along with the Cleveland Museum of Natural History,”
said Keith McClintock, vice president of conservation for the Land Conservancy.
“Development has dramatically reduced Ohio’s wetlands, and preserving a
property like Long Lake Bog protects rare habitat and improves water quality.”
McClintock noted that Long Lake Bog is in the watershed of the Tuscarawas
River, a state-designated impaired body of water. The state has established a
level of pollutants for the river – called the Total Maximum Daily Load, or TMDL –
that it can receive and still safely meet water quality standards
James Bissell, director of conservation for the Museum’s Center for
Conservation & Biodiversity, said, “Long Lake Bog has four rare plants not
present within the Museum’s other glacial fen preserves. No true bogs, the
common bogs across Canada and Alaska, are present in Ohio. The Museum’s
Fern Lake Bog and Singer Lake Bog have recently been placed into a relatively

Pav’s Creamery Expands with Second Location
Built in 1953, the small ice cream stand
at the Lockwood Corners intersection
was originally a Tastee-Freez franchise.
Tastee-Freez was founded in 1950
in Joliet, Illinois by Leo Moranz and
Harry Axene. Moranz invented a soft
serve pump and freezer which enabled
dispensing the product, and their
manufacturing company produced the
machines which franchisees would buy.
Originally stores focused on iced milk
and other frozen dairy-based desserts. Expansion of the brand was rapid in the
1950s; in 1952, there were 315 locations, and by 1957 there were nearly 1,800
locations. Fewer than fifty still exist today.
Michelle Micochero owns the original Pav’s
location, and she realized that with a small building
and limited parking, they needed to think out of the
box for ways to expand the business. It turns out
the man with the creative ideas was Michelle’s son
Nik Pappas. For 12 years, Nik had been living out of
the country working in the hotel industry and Michelle
wanted to bring him into the business at the same
time Nik wanted to move back home.
Nik’s official role is Director of Sales and Marketing,
and entering 2013 he stated Pav’s goal “is to get our
products in the mouths of as many people as possible,
from super markets, to restaurants, to local Italian Festivals and beyond.”
In 2012, the first expansion beyond the walls of 3769 Manchester Road was
through distribution to numerous area restaurants where you’ll find Pav’s on the
dessert menu. Pav’s works with chefs to make their dessert menu one of a kind
and they can create a specialized flavor only available in one restaurant.
The next expansion was distribution to grocery stores, with product appearing
on the shelves of the West Point Market and area Acme Fresh Markets stores
beginning in early 2013.
Robert Pavlik purchased the local Tastee-Freez in 1969 and decided to change
the name over to his well know nickname, Pav’s. In 1978, Pav’s changed
ownership once again and was purchased by Bill and Claire Micochero and to
this day it has remained in the Micochero family.
Pav’s Creamery prides itself in serving
old fashion frozen custard as well
as a verity of homemade ice cream,
Italian gelato and Kustard Cakes. The
combination of using their old fashion
1910 batch machines made by Soeder
and Sons for their Kustard and imported
Fabbri flavors from Bologna Italy for the
Gelato creates a taste that cannot be
replicated.
Pav’s ice cream has been voted “Best Ice Cream” in 2011, 2012 and 2013
various publications such as Akron Beacon Journal’s “Beacon’s Best” and the
Akron Canton “Hot List” awards. With such accolades being received, it was
clear that customers needed to get their hands on Pav’s treats more than the
eight months each year the seasonal business was open. In fact, six weeks
before the end of their 2012 season, Pav’s gave their loyal fans the opportunity to
stock up for the winter by buying pints and half gallons of their favorite flavors.

Flowers by Dick & Son Celebrates 60 Years
Flowers by Dick and Son, Inc. has endured for 60 years thanks to their
steadfast commitment to customer satisfaction. They have succeeded in
creating long term relationships with their customers because satisfaction is their
top priority, not just because it’s their job, but because they care.
The story begins in 1949 when Dick
Benton graduated from Manchester
High School and went on to Ohio State
University where he received a bachelor’s
degree in criminology in 1953. While at
Ohio State, Dick worked part-time at a
flower shop. That job was more than just
work to make money; he clearly had a
passion for the industry.
In 1953, Dick returned home to Manchester and started working at Goodrich.
Less than a year later, Dick opened “Flowers by Dick” in April 1954. Still working
at Goodrich, he enlisted the help of his mother in tending to the shop during the
day and Dick would come in during the evenings to make arrangements. They
had a station wagon which was critical in making deliveries that were usually time
sensitive for a holiday or occasion.

national competitions and served on the
board and many committees of the Ohio
Florist Association.
In 1990, Dick suddenly passed away
at the age of 58. Brian now had many
people depending on him to keep the
business going, including his mom who
also took on a more active role. Looking
at where the business is today, it’s clear that they have succeeded. The store is
more than just a florist, they had diversified into a gift shop, with everything from
wind chimes and lanterns, to jellies, chocolates and other unique gifts.
In the early years, a single station wagon was critical for making deliveries.
While today Brian has to rent a 52-foot long refrigerated semi-trailer for both
Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day when he’ll have 500 orders and eight vans out
on the road making deliveries. Despite expansion and changes in the business,
the business is still about customer satisfaction. Delivering service, quality and
being timely is what Flower’s by Dick and Son prides themselves on.

As business picked up, Dick left his job at Goodrich and then in July 1963 they
moved across the street when he purchased the house at 935 W Nimisila Road.
The house was converted into the retail shop where they are still located today.
Dick and his wife Glenna had two children including son Brian who worked at
Cedar Lane Farms in Smithville, OH after attending Manchester High School.
After a couple of years, Brian picked up and moved to Florida, but after little more
than a month, he realized Florida wasn’t for him. When he moved back, his dad
gave him the chance to work in the flower shop, but only if he guaranteed he’d be
there a minimum of six months. That was in the early 1980s and Brian fulfilled
his commitment and stayed on longer.
About 1985, Dick approached Brian and said he was going to add “and Son”
to the name of the business. Initially, Brian hesitated because he was in his
mid-20s and didn’t know if being a florist was what he wanted to do for a career.
Seeing the way Brian knows his business today, it’s surprising to learn that he
was ever uncertain about being a florist. He doesn’t just manage the business;

The Art of Dale Warren
Painting a realistic looking landscape with acrylic paint on an 11” x 14” canvas
may seem like it’s an undertaking that’s not for everyone, but Dale Warren
assures you that everyone has always finished their painting in his classes which
run 2 ½ to 3 hours long. Based on the photos of the happy customers proudly
posing in front of their artwork, the landscapes aren’t just finished; they turn out
looking pretty good too!
Dale Warren has spent better than
half his life painting and exploring art,
and his journey started in an art class
just like the ones he offers today. He
first picked up a brush at the small
Manchester Art Gallery nearly four
decades ago and it seems like he hasn’t
put it down since.
Dale never had any formal training, but
he has studied with a wide variety of artists and attended many workshops in a
quest to perfect his work and capture life in paint. Even now, Dale constantly
explores new techniques and artistic concepts. He is a “student of his passion”
and has no plans to stop.

As a construction manager for much of his career, Dale was focused on
drafting and engineering and had the opportunity to travel a lot for his work. He
would always take an easel and paints with him in a suitcase to capture scenes
around the country.
Dale particularly enjoys painting “en plein air” which is a French expression that
means “in the open air” and is particularly used to describe the act of painting
outdoors. Spending as much time as he can working on location, Dale studies
light and color so that his work is as true to life as possible. When he returns to
his studio, he uses his on-site experience to complete his work.
Four years ago, Dale retired from his career in construction and had a grand
opening for his first gallery and studio in November, 2010. His landlord sold that
building, forcing him to move to his new
gallery where he had a grand opening
on April 12, 2014. The new location
is in the Lockwood School Business
Emporium at 3681 Manchester Road.
At the gallery, Dale holds classes for
up to eight students every Wednesday
and Saturday at 9:30 am until about
noon. Class fees are $30 if the student

provides their own matrial. Aspiring artists can buy their own set of materials for
$100. If Dale provides the materials, the class fee is $40.
In addition to the classes, the gallery is
filled with a variety of work showcasing
his many talents. While Dale focused at
one time on particular genres of painting,
he has made a point of being a wellrounded artist who can paint anything.
For a period of time he focused on
painting golf courses throughout Ohio,
and for another period he studied with a
portrait artist for six years to refine those
skills.
Dale is available by commission to capture your favorite loved one, pet,
landscape, home, or a specific hole on a golf course.
Prints and originals are available at the gallery for prices ranging from $30 to
$1,400. The public is welcome to stop in, and while there are no fixed hours, you
are welcome when open or call for an appointment.

Green Chamber of Commerce
Green was part of the South Summit Chamber of Commerce. However, as the
City of Green took on an identity of its own, it became clear that a separate
Chamber was needed. The Green Chamber has become a dynamic and integral
part of the Green business community, and now boasts nearly 200 members.

City of New Franklin
The City of New Franklin (founded as Franklin Township in 1817) became one of
Ohio’s newest municipalities on March 5, 2006. It is located at the southern edge
of Summit County and is bounded to the north by Coventry Township, Barberton
and Norton; by Lawrence Township, to the south; by Clinton, to the southwest; by
Chippewa Township, to the west; and by Green, to the east.
The 2006 population estimate is 15,013 and the city is 26.6 square miles in area.
New Franklin’s cost of living is 12.4% lower than the national average.
Residents have one of five postal codes, and
four local school districts are responsible
for educating the city’s children. Some
residents identify their hometown as
either Manchester or Portage Lakes. As
a result, New Franklin has developed into
“A Community of Neighborhoods.”
Al Bollas is the Mayor and the city council
has seven members, one for each of four
wards, and three at-large members.

City of Green
Coventry Township
The City of Green is located in southern Summit County on the Stark County
border and was incorporated as a city in 1992. Prior to incorporation, the City
was Green Township first established in 1809. A history rich in agriculture,
Green is now a suburban community with more than 25,000 residents. Some
small farms still dot the landscape amid 530-acres of city-owned parkland, homes
and subdivisions, office parks and businesses, as well as recreation facilities.
Coventry Township was founded in 1806 and is located in southern Summit
County. With a population of 10,900, the community is governed by a threemember Board of Trustees: David Calderone, Tom Seese, and Edward Diebold
and a fiscal officer, Joni Murgatroyd who oversee the operation of the Fire
Department, Road Department, and Parks and Zoning Inspector. Police
protection is provided by the Summit County Sheriff.
In 2007, Green was ranked as the
16th best place to raise a family by
businessweek.com. From its top-rated
school system to the ample park land
and green space to the proximity to
higher education and quality healthcare,
residents of Green already knew this was
a fabulous place to raise a family.
Coventry originally included the Summit
Lake area and the Rolling Acres Mall
area, with the southern end of the
Portage Path being near the center of
the township, but over the years large
tracts were annexed to the cities of Akron,
and Barberton.In 1995, after seven years
of negotiations voters passed a historic
agreement with the City of Akron and
became the first township in the United
States to stop annexation.
