First of all, I would like to congratulate all of the recipients of our
scholarships this year for their hard work and the potential they have
exhibited to exude the values of our organization.
For the past 42 years, KASF has served as a role model for all Korean American community organizations –at first locally and later as a national organization – with its mission to help educate the future
generations of Korean Americans. For volunteered-based organizations such as KASF to sustain long
term success, it takes countless volunteers who generously sacrifice their precious time and resources,
donors and sponsors who encourage and support us year after year, and many guests who attend
our fundraising events such as tonight’s Banquet Gala. As such, I would like to take this opportunity
to offer my sincere “thank you” to all of you who helped to create, manage, and support this storied
organization. Our success is not simply about KASF but more importantly, it is about our entire community that is willing to help educate the future generation.
Tonight, while we celebrate the monumental accomplishments of this organization, we should also
take a moment to reflect on the remaining challenges we must overcome. While we have mostly succeeded in carrying out our core mission for the past 42 years, we have much more to do. For every student we are able to help, there are many more that we are not able to help. Furthermore, if we expect
these students to reach their potential and become future leaders, we need to focus on many other
aspects of their career development. Our board of directors understand this and are well equipped
to help beyond simply providing financial aid so that we can fully achieve our mission of cultivating our
next generation of Korean American community leaders.
Successful corporations and organizations need to reinvent themselves and so do we. Are you up to
the challenge? I am.

Greetings to all of you! As chairman of the National Board for the past two
years, I’ve had the privilege of serving under the Korean American Scholarship Foundation and working to advance a cause that I have always felt
to be so dear to my heart. It is widely known that a lack of a degree beyond high school generally limits
one’s career opportunities in life. But the implicit value of higher education lies in its tendency to increase
one’s mental capacity by encouraging thought and discourse. That the KASF provides assistance to the
many Korean-Americans in the partaking of this lofty endeavor is an act of long term reinvestment back
into the prosperity of the Korean-American communities.
And to that end, I’d like to praise all of the numerous volunteers that have kept the KASF in operation
year after year. Everyone plays a role in this organization because we all believe in what the KASF stands
for. Every year we come back to help serve our regional Korean-American communities get enriched that
much more. I’d like to thank the many sponsors across the country who have contributed to our cause.
While there continue to be times of good and times of bad, our sponsors have had the insight to know
that investment in education is one that stands the tests of time.
Finally, congratulations to all the recipients of this year’s scholarships. I urge you all to continue working
hard towards each of your goals.

Letter from the Ambassador
Honorable Duk Soo Han
Ambassador of the Republic of Korea
On behalf of the Korean government, I would like to congratulate on
the successful hosting of the 42nd Annual Korean American Scholarship
Award Ceremony.
Since its foundation in 1969, the Korean American Scholarship Foundation has provided numerous Korean
American students facing economic difficulty with opportunity and hope of toward education. Through
such efforts, Korean American society has emerged as an exemplary minority group in the United States
and nurtured many capable young individuals. I believe that most of the beneficiaries of the scholarship
will become future leaders of Korean community. Indeed, the endeavor of the foundation brightens not
only the future of students, but also the future of Korean Americans.
The quiet efforts of the foundation have enabled students and the Korean community to dream of a
promising future. Despite difficult circumstances, many Koreans, and Korean American supporters have
demonstrated interests in the Foundation’s activities. I would like to show my deepest appreciation to
those who work for our future.
I, once again, would like to congratulate the recipients of the scholarship. Today we all gathered to
applaud your hardworking. Your long hours of hardworking and the difficulties you have overcome are
the source of your joy today. The scholarship represents both a reward for your painstaking work and a
catalyst to motivate you to step forward academically. In accordance with these expectations, I look forward to watching you growing into outstanding members of society. Furthermore, I hope that you will be
leaders capable of drawing a blueprint for the future of Korean community.
Becky Lee
Director, Becky’s Fund
As a young leader and catalyst for change in the fight against domestic
violence, Becky Lee is the force behind Becky’s Fund, a national nonprofit focused on domestic violence prevention and education. After
receiving her B.A. in Women’s Studies from the University of Michigan, she became a lawyer to help
victims of domestic violence. Interested in the prevention of domestic violence, Ms. Lee has dedicated
her life and career to helping survivors of domestic violence over the last 14 years as an advocate, a policy
associate, and an attorney.
After coming in third on the reality show, Survivor: Cook Islands, in 2006, she used her prize money
to start Becky’s Fund, which executes its outreach strategy through national awareness and media
campaigns, using radio, print and tv PSA’s to connect victims to help. The organization leverages education, web 2.0 technology and essential resources to enable critical one-on-one connections between
survivors and victims and works on addressing domestic violence with both men and women as a human
rights issue. Realizing the importance of educating youth about this problem affecting 1 in 3 women in
America, Becky travels extensively across the U.S. to teach students about the warning signs of domestic
violence, how to get help and how to help a friend. She works with attorneys, judges, and the community to train them about how to be better advocates for victims of abuse. She also continues to teach
kickboxing and self-defense to women and teens to encourage self-empowerment and confidence. Since
founding the organization, she has dedicated herself full-time to the mission of DV prevention. Using
social media and innovative community collaborations, Becky’s Fund engages people from diverse backgrounds in order to address the issue of DV.

Opening Remark
Eun Yang
Anchor, NBC4
Eun Yang is a morning anchor on NBC4. She also serves as host of the
Rundown and other shows on NBC Washington Nonstop, the network’s
lifestyle channel highlighting the Washington DC area.
Before joining News4 in 2002, Yang was one of the first reporters hired by the National Geographic
Channel in Washington. While there, she traveled all over the world, filing stories for National
Geographic Today. Prior to that, Yang was at WUSA-TV for six years, working her way up from a reporter
trainee to a substitute anchor.
During the 2009 blizzards, Yang solo anchored nearly 6 hours of coverage during the first snowfall. She
also spent many hours covering the 2002 Washington area sniper shootings and the inaugurations of
President George W. Bush in 2005 and Barack Obama in 2009. She also covered Pope Benedict XVI’s
Mass at Nationals Park.
Yang was named Alumna of the Year by the University of Maryland Asian Studies Program and received
a Community Service Award from the Organization of Chinese Americans. Washingtonian magazine has
recognized Yang twice, as one of DC’s 100 People to Watch and as one of DC’s Stars of Local TV News.
Born in Seoul, Korea, Yang grew up in the Washington area. She graduated from Paint Branch High School
then earned a journalism degree from the University of Maryland.
Yang previously enjoyed reading and traveling but now chases around her three children. She is married
to Robert Kang. They live in Washington, DC.

Priscilla Baek
Associate Manager of Policy and Research for the US-Korea Business Council and Japan
Program at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. As Associate Manager, she supports the
Council’s policy initiatives, including the U.S.-Korea FTA Business Coalition, and the U.S.
Chamber’s Japan program of work through policy research, briefings, position papers,
press releases, and other materials. She also organizes seminars and meetings on economic
and business topics between senior-level U.S. and Korean government officials, business
figures, and Chamber members.
Ms. Baek is actively involved in the Asian Pacific American community and was recently elected 2012 Chair-elect
for the Board of Directors of the Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership (CAPAL). She has served on
CAPAL’s board for nearly two years, helping to oversee the organization’s fundraising and development efforts,
outreach to partner organizations, and execution of key programs.
Ms. Baek holds a B.A. in Public Policy and Spanish from Duke University and an M.A. in Korean from the University
of Hawaii-Manoa. She has also studied at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea.
Joshua Han
Federal Investigator at KeyPoint Government Solutions where he conducts national
security clearance background investigations for various government agencies such as
Office of Personnel Management and Department of Defense, etc. Prior to this he worked
for the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). He ensured overall compliance with
FINRA member firms and representatives.
On top of his employment, Joshua volunteers and serves on the Board of Directors for
the Conference on Asian Pacific American Leader (CAPAL), and he is the chair of the
Professional Development Committee and serves on the Business Development Committee as well. The mission
for CAPAL is to promote Asian Pacific American interests and success in public service careers, to provide information and education on policy issues affecting the APA community, and to serve the APA community at large.
In addition to CAPAL, he is also on the staff for Kollaboration - D.C. and the mission for Kollaboration is empowerment through entertainment. Before graduating from UIUC, Joshua interned in Washington, D.C. in the summer of
2007 for the Korean American Coalition (KAC) as well as Becky’s Fund, a non-profit organization advocating the fight
against domestic violence. In Becky’s Fund he worked as a Communication and Development Associate promoting awareness about domestic violence. Joshua received his BA in Communication from the University of Illinois,
Urbana Champaign in 2008. He was elected the Vice President for the Korean American Student Association
(KASA) was also selected to be on the Asian American Awareness Committee for UIUC.

Richard Shin

Pianist
As a top prize winner of numerous competitions, fifteen-year-old Richard Shin maintains a busy
performing schedule. He was the youngest first prize winner ever in the Maryland MTNA Senior
Division Competition (2010-2011 season). Richard was a winner in the 2010 Ithaca Concerto
Competition, and was a semifinalist in the Tureck Bach International Competition, which resulted in a debut at Lincoln Center. 2010 and 2011 also saw consecutive first prize wins at the
American Protégé International Competition, as well as the 2011 Judges Award. This prestigious
honor resulted in two invitations to perform at Carnegie Hall. In addition, he won prizes at the
2011 Chopin International Piano Competition in Hartford, CT, which led to an invitation to perform at the Polish National Home. He also won the FMMC High School Piano Competition 2011,
and will perform with the violin winner on December 7, 2011. In his young career, Richard has also had several professional
engagements, including a performance of the Grieg Concerto with the Cumberland Symphony Orchestra in May 2010 and a
solo recital for “Music at Penn Alps” on June 11, 2011. Earlier that month, Richard performed at the Gilman School with the
cooperation of the Steinway Piano Gallery of Washington D.C. On August 10, 2011, Richard played at the John F. Kennedy
Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. He has been invited to perform in Cologne, Germany and Sumi, Ukraine
next April.
Richard has participated in Master Classes given by Awadagin Pratt, Nelita True, Joseph Banowetz and also Yoheved Kaplinsky,
having been selected to participate in her Chopin Etudes Master Class at the 2010 MTNA National Conference in Albuquerque,
New Mexico.
He attends the Gilman School for Boys in Baltimore, Maryland and studies piano with Dr. Scott Beard of Shepherd University
and Yong Hi Moon of the Peabody Conservatory.
Christian Classical Singers
The Christian Classical Singers (CCS) was established in 2008 through the strong ties of eight
individuals of classical male singers in the Metropolitan area of Washington D.C, to produce high
qualities of performance, to share graces, and to
praise with the talents each individual was given.
CCS had produced numerous concerts such as
‘Opera Gala Concert’, ‘Korean Art Songs Night’,
‘Sacred Concert’, ‘Mission of North Korea EsEunseo Koo

etc. Also, CCS participated in many local events
of good causes in the metropolitan area; recently, CCS donated their talents to the Benefit Concert for the Relief of Japanese
Tsunami Victims on Sunday, April 10 2011 as the representative of Korea. The CCS has worked hard to be one of the most representatives of Korean art and culture in this Capitol of United states.
The members consist of graduates in voice from Peabody Conservatory, University of Maryland, College Park and Indiana
School of Music. Members are regular soloists in a wide variety of performances in the DC area and CCS sing for the Washington National Opera, the Baltimore Opera, the New York Metropolitan Opera, or teach at George Mason University or Montgomery Community College.

As a South Korean citizen with experience in the U.S., China, and Japan, I have always
been interested in the role of South Korea in mediating relations among these nations. By overcoming many obstacles from those experiences, I prepared myself both academically and socially to
work towards resolving international issues involving South Korea. I would like to promote building inter-regional
engagement mechanisms that connect economic cooperation with potential political considerations.
After leaving South Korea at the age of 16 to participate in foreign exchange student program, I faced difficult
adjustments to new life in the US. Living with American host families for three years and participating in various
extracurricular activities have allowed me to immerse myself in different language and social customs. Running
with teammates through the Adirondacks for cross country races and representing student body as a senior class
president helped me seamlessly interact with fellow American students and share our viewpoints. After attending Vassar College, I tried to go further by contributing my efforts to make changes at local and global level. I took
leadership roles in community food drives and volunteer tax preparation counseling aimed at alleviating inner-city
poverty in Poughkeepsie, New York. Furthermore, I lobbied congressmen on Capitol Hill on reducing greenhouse
gas emissions and providing funding for climate change adaptation.
Study abroad to China and Japan along with exploration of other Asian countries introduced me different challenges of developing a broad perspective of inter-Asian cultural exchanges. Through daily discussions with students from Peking and Ochanomizu University, I learned to identify our common grounds and establish the need
for multinational cooperation to resolve deep-rooted political and historical issues. Another lesson comes from
traveling to South Asia. Before reaching Tengboche (3867m) on the Everest trek, my Nepali roommate and I were
approached by a group of rifle-slinging Maoists imploring us to give “donations” for the Communist Party of Nepal.
The unnerving encounter helped me examine the reality of Chinese influence and “Maoism” in Nepal and India –
and the increasingly integrated Asian political sphere.
These international experiences greatly helped my writing of Vassar graduation thesis titled “Building an East Asian
Community - Needs and Challenges behind Regional Cooperation” which was selected as the best thesis in Asian
Studies department. I also won Vassar Maguire Fellowship awarded to six most qualified graduating seniors to further study Sino-American relations at the Johns Hopkins-Nanjing University Center in China. My unique experience
at the Center was bolstered by intensive graduate level coursework in Mandarin and teachings of both SAIS and
Nanjing University faculty on the evolution of the two countries’ relations and its contemporary implications. In
addition, sharing thoughts with Chinese and American classmates regarding Cheonan naval ship and Yeonpyeong
Island incidents helped me appreciate different approaches to solving the current Korean conflict.
Growing up in the United States, I saw my parents work seven-days-a-week, fourteen
hours a day. I watched them age significantly, their backs bend, and their hair turn
grey all too quickly. I saw their physical pain, their emotional struggles, and their mental battles to remain an encouraging source for our family. Not all aspects, however, were bleak, because through them, I nurtured the most
powerful form of motivation, and in that motivation, I learned to desire and seek “success” in everything I do. I
discovered that genuine success comes only from hard work that never settles for mediocrity but rather seeks excellence. Most importantly, I discovered that success is not measured by the amount of money I make, but rather
the enjoyment I can provide for others in my life.
Upon enrolling at the Bergen County Academies, a magnet institution known for its competitive structure and
extended school day, I faced several academic challenges. It was routine for my friends to attend after-school
programs, taking SAT classes and getting extra help for schoolwork. My family could not afford them, and I was
left to study alone. At the time, I was often discouraged and resentful; looking back, however, I thank my parents
for challenging me the way they did. Rather than relying on someone else to teach me something, I was forced to
confront myself, explore and expand my intellectual boundaries, and learn to work harder than my peers. Through
such obstacles, I developed a competitiveness to be the best and study habits that helped me to be successful.
Most importantly, I learned that studying does not just teach me material from the curriculum; it also teaches me
how to set a goal, work hard for it, and ultimately achieve it.
In addition to being challenged academically, I was also blessed with an environment to sustain my cultural identity. Despite growing up in a town with very few Asian Americans, I was banned from speaking English inside the
house and developed a strong appreciation and aptitude of the Korean language. As I better understood and
respected my own heritage, I learned to respect other cultures, and this helped me to better connect with my
peers. By respecting first, I gained respect, and such exchanges of friendship taught me the value of having positive
relationships with others.
Success is not measured by dollars, nor is it defined by the letter grade on a transcript. Rather, it is portrayed by
the life one carries for not only himself but also for those around him. My parents may not be the most affluent
people in the world, but to me, they are the most successful, because they have done everything in their power
to provide for that happiness for our family. In them, I find inspiration, and I realize that I am a long way from truly
succeeding. I am confident, however, that by following their path, I, too, will one day be successful.
With a SAIS education in Washington D.C. unifying my multicultural experience and academic preparation, I aspire
to facilitate South Korean cooperation with other nations, including finding diplomatic tools for American and
South Korean engagement with North Korea.

About KASF
Goals
목표
The Korean American Scholarship Foundation is established 1) to assist
Korean American students in pursuit of their academic and personal
achievement, 2) to encourage their community and civic service as an
integral part of their leadership development, and 3) to nurture a sense
of pride and confidence in Korean cultural heritage and tradition.
한미장학재단은 1) 미국 에 거주하는 한인 학생들의 학력증진과
인격 한양을 돕고, 2) 리더십 개발을 위해 지역사 회 봉사를 장려
하며, 3) 한국의 문화유산과 전통에 대한 자긍심을 배양토록 함으
로써, 한인학생들이 지도자로서의 역량을 발휘할 수 있도록 최선
을 다 하고 있습니다.
Background
Founded in 1969 by a small group of concerned individuals in Washington, D.C., the KASF began as a local organization with limited focus and
funding sources. However, with the dramatic growth of the Korean immigrant community in the U.S., the KASF has expanded to other regions
to broaden its funding base. During the past few years, the KASF has
been able to build an endowment fund of over $3.6 million, through
the generous support of both Korean and American corporations as
well as individuals. Each year, the KASF has been able to offer scholarship awards to an increasingly large number of students. To date, over
5,000 students have benefited from KASF scholarships.
Organizational Structure
The Korean American Scholarship Foundation is a nationwide organization with separate regional offices in Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los
Angeles, Atlanta, New York City and Detroit. To better serve the fast
growing number of Korean-American students nationwide, the KASF
established a national executive board composed of representatives
from each of the regions in 1989.

본 재단은 1969년 미국의 수도 워싱턴 D.C. 에 거주하는 뜻있는
몇몇 인사들에 의해 제한된 목표와 기금을 갖고 지역적 기구로 시
작되었습니다. 그 후 미국내에 한인이민의 급격한 성장으로 재단
은 장학금 모금 지역을 확대하고 미국전역에 걸친 장학재단으로 성
장 발전하였습니다. 본 재단은 개인 기부금, 한국 혹은 미국 사엽체
의 기부금으로 현재 360만불이 넘는 기금을 확보하고 있습니다.
따라서 본제단은 장학금 수여대상 학생수를 매년 증가시키고 있고
그 숫자는 올해로 5천명을 넘었습니다.
조직
한미장학 재단으로 위싱턴 D.C. 에서 시작하여, 로스엔젤레스, 시
카고, 애틀란타, 뉴욕에 각각 지역 장학회를 두고 미국 전국에 걸
친 장학재단을로 성장하여 1989년에는 전국 이사회를 조직하기
에 이르렀습니다. 따라서 매년 수적으로 급성장하는 한인 학생들
을 더욱 활발히 지원해 줄 수 있게 되었습니다.
장학금 종류
Scholarships
CHAIR SCHOLARSHIPS are established through a one-time donation of
$25,000 or more by individuals or corporations. KASF will pay $1,000 in
perpetuity in the name of a given Chair Scholarship.
DESIGNATED SCHOLARSHIPS are established by contributions of
$1,000 or more and awarded each year of contribution.
GENERAL SCHOLARSHIPS are funded by KASF fundraising activities.
SUPER SCHOLARSHIPS Each year, the students with the most outstanding performance are selected to receive our highest award of $5,000.
HIGH SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD - High School students are eligible to apply for this Award.
Selection is based on outstanding achievements in music, arts, sports,
community and social services, and leadership. Each receives $500.
영구 장학금 개인 혹은 단체가 $25,000 이상을 한 구 좌로 일시에
기증함으로써 신설되며 매년 지정된 전공 장학금으로 한 학생당
$1,000을 수여하고 있습니다.
일반 장학금 은 다양한 전공분야 학생들에게 각각 $2,000~$5,000
씩 수여하고 있습니다.
지정 장학금 은 매년 $1,000이상을 기중함으로서 설치되며 의학,
신학, 체육, 경영, 사회복지 등 지정된 전공분야를 전공 하는 학생
들에게 매년 수여하고 있습니다.
고등학생 특기장학금 - 이 장학금은 고등학생을 위한 것으 학업, 음
악, 미술, 글짓기, 웅변, 운동, 봉사활동 그리고 지도력 등에서 얼마
나 두각을 보였나를 심사기준으로 하여 수여하고 있습니다.
