You can see the outer edges of Marilyn’s extraordinary flower garden (all perennials) from the 7th fairway. The Dusing children have returned to Northern Kentucky after careers in Russia and Saipan and study abroad in London. Ben is an attorney and former federal prosecutor. Andy is a school vice principal, and Kate is an Exceptional Student Services representative. Familyspotlight By Resident: Gerry Dusing Marilyn and Gerry Dusing reside with their rescue dog Buckwheat at 835 Bay Colt Lane. On Tuesdays, their six grandchildren, ages 4 months to 4 years, reside with them. If you are proficient with numbers, letters, colors, shapes, water paint, chalk, Play Dough, specific powers and fatal flaws of Super Heroes and Princesses (and their enemies), adventure storytelling and nature expeditions, as well as infant/toddler/preschool hygiene and dietary science, you are invited to join them. Marilyn and Gerry grew up a mile apart, Marilyn in Park Hills, Gerry in Ft. Wright, but didn’t meet until their senior year in college. Although not native Boone Countians, they moved to Florence when Kentucky 18 and US 42 were 2 lane roads, the mall was an idea, Rink’s Bargain City was the Walmart of its time, and you could buy a lovely 3 bedroom brick ranch with finished basement in a delightful neighborhood behind Boone County High School for $28,000, which they did. They later migrated to “the edge of civilization as we knew it” just off Pleasant Valley Road. The Dusings moved to Triple Crown in 2000. One of Gerry’s partners, Jim Woltermann, and his wife Phyllis, lived in Triple Crown since 1994 and continually sang its praises. Although Marilyn had initial reservations about buying a home with a Gerry began the Florence office of the law firm Adams, Stepner, Woltermann & Dusing fresh out of University of Kentucky law school in 1974. He enjoys practicing law as a partner among 23 attorneys at its Covington location. Marilyn has taught in public and parochial schools. Since completing her graduate work at Northern Kentucky University, she has taught English and writing skills to 8th graders at St. Paul School in Florence for “the last 20 years or so.” Marilyn stressed how fortunate she feels to work with enthusiastic students in a terrific academic environment. Marilyn serves on the Triple Crown HOA Landscape Committee. She has served numerous charitable causes, including currently being on call for the Women’s Crisis Center, and is looking forward to volunteering at the new Mary Rose Mission feeding the homeless on Main Street in Florence. She is most proud that her writing students have won numerous regional, state and even national competitions. This year she was named Barnes & Noble Northern Kentucky Teacher of the year. Her former students regularly return to visit during college breaks. Marilyn ran her first 13.5 mile Flying Pig half marathon at age 60. She enjoys her Saturday morning Roenker Running Club, winding through Crestview Hills and Edgewood training for this year’s Flying Pig. Gerry has served as chairman of the Thomas More College Board of Trustees and the Kentucky Bar Association Continuing Legal Education Commission. Presently he serves NeighborhoodNews 11 as a member of the Kentucky Board of Bar Examiners which conducts the licensure testing of Kentucky attorneys. He has practiced law for 37 years and has been honored by his peers as a “Best Lawyer” and “Super Lawyer” in the nation as well as receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northern Kentucky Bar Association. The Dusings usually vacation with their children and grandchildren at Hilton Head. But last summer they left the kids at home and spent 12 days on a Baltic Sea tour with their friends, Jon and Jane Votel. Jane snagged lunch reservations at Noma, the New York Times rated “best restaurant in the world” in Copenhagen. Noma takes reservations one day a month for seating 3 months later, and you have to call at 3am due to the time change. Twelve courses, consisting of three or four bites each, were quite unique. Gerry’s favorites were the surprise first course, which was the centerpiece, consisting of native twigs and wild flowers of Denmark, the fried moss, the scallops dressed in octopus ink and the live shrimp. Yes, live –swallow, don’t chew. Marilyn’s favorites were the wines – a different one for each course. Another trip highlight was dinner with an elderly Russian couple at their apartment in St. Petersburg with an interpreter. They worried about healthcare and eroding pensions just like we do. And they laughed at the memory of hiding under tables during nuclear attack drills. Gerry and Marilyn cite Triple Crown’s pastoral setting and its aesthetic amenities as reasons they love living here. But Gerry also adds, “Great neighborhoods are made not by bricks and mortar, but by great neighbors, and we are blessed with great neighbors.” You can see a smiling Marilyn during her daily 5 mile jog around Triple Crown. She emphasized how friendly the clubhouse staff, the golf course grounds crew and landscaping crew are, especially “the man in the hat on the tractor.” However, if you are a kid driving a golf cart on the walking path, prepare for detention! 12 NeighborhoodNews Triple Crown Life April Resident Recipe Kitchen Play in Whirlaway Back in the day, in the year 1923 to be exact, the Officers’ Wives’ Club of Ft. Benning, in Columbus, Georgia had its beginning as the historical organization it was to become. As a new bride and military spouse, I purchased their Golden Heritage cookbook in 1977, one of many O.W.C. cookbooks I accumulated during our travels. O.W.C. members worldwide justifiably take pride in numerous contributions to both the military and civilian communities, and these cookbooks are an important fundraising source. I think my favorite section in the Ft. Benning cookbook was “Southern Hospitality”. To this day I regularly make one of our family favorites, Onion Pie, or as I like to call it On‘ Yum’ Pie, because it’s so gosh darn good and makes delicious use of a southern staple, the sweet-or Vidalia-onion found in southern Georgia. It truly can be a yummy substitute for potatoes and is always found on our Easter family buffet. I have successfully doubled the filling of this recipe and either used two pie shells or manipulated two ready to bake pie dough rounds in a 9” x 13” dish. Of course, you could always make your own piecrust, but why in the heck would you do that? Resident, Pam Porter On ‘Yum’ Pie Heat oven to 400 degrees. 1 9” unbaked pie shell, in an ovenproof pan light or heavy cream 2 large peeled Vidalia or other sweet onions ¼ lb. butter Brush bottom of pie shell with a little cream and chill. Cut onions in half then slice them. Sauté onions in butter until transparent; meanwhile, place pie shell in oven for 2 minutes. Remove, and then place onions in pie shell. Reduce oven to 350 degrees. 1 egg, beaten ½ cup light or heavy cream ½ tsp. freshly ground pepper 1 tsp. salt Dash grated nutmeg Parmesan cheese, to your liking Combine the first 5 ingredients and pour over the onions. Top generously with the cheese. Bake about 30-35 minutes, until lightly browned on top. Makes 6-8 servings. The Ladies of Kindervelt #55 hosted their first annual Valentine’s formal, “Black Ties and Black Jack at the Syndicate” on February 11th. One hundred and fifty people enjoyed an evening of romantic fun that included cocktails and dinner, a fashion show featuring Donna Sawyer’s Fabulous Furs, casino games and a silent auction. Vintage Cigarette Girls roamed throughout the evening selling Valentine treats. Jennifer Kotzbauer of PhotoJennicPhotography.com captured keepsake photos. The inaugural Tammy Booth Legacy Award was created and presented by KV55 President Autumn Short. Fittingly, Tammy Booth was the first honoree. After twelve years of devoted service and excellence, Tammy is the undisputed backbone of the organization. As Autumn said that evening, “And so, Tammy, we have created an award specifically to acknowledge all that you do for our group, our community and The Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Thank you.” Melissa McLeod, Autumn Short, Emma Kidwell, Marybeth Inyart The High Roller sponsor for the event was Blue Star, Inc., owned by Steve and Vicki Cuntz. We introduced Brandi to her neighbor’s dog, Cabo Bolton, a lassadoodle, who is at least 10 times her size. Our little girl was not intimidated…. she chased him around the yard until he had to stop and rest…. then went right up to him nose to nose…so funny. pets precious Another neighbor’s dog, Malee Sodum, runs when she sees the now 5lb Brandi coming her way. A little over a year ago we lost our 17 year old Chihuahua, Carlos. My husband was so fond of him he was constantly telling me about available dogs, visiting shelters and checking ads. I kept telling him we needed a “breather” from an animal, as we like to travel. Well he called me and said he talked to a Yorkie breeder and I had an appointment the next day at 3. I think that finding a dog is like buying a new car. Once you sit in a new car you buy it. Once we saw Brandi we were hooked…. only problem was another person had put a down payment on her. I was more upset than Mike that we may lose her. She loved us both, and we just knew she should be ours. Luckily the breeder called the next day and the down payment check from the buyer bounced…Yah for us. We told her we would bring, cash, copper, steaks, and booze what ever she wanted. She said cash would be fine. We named her Brandi after conferring with grandchildren etc. This little 3lb. darling came to live with us and I took her everywhere in my handbag. We immediately Brandi in her car seat Brandi dressed for Christmas get up…. women this is one of the wonderful things about the senior years…. hearing, or not depending on what you want. Brett decided to become an acupuncturist after practicing orthopedic and emergency room nursing because of her father, Dr. Marvin Cain. Dr. Cain is a veterinarian who pioneered veterinary acupuncture in America in the early seventies. He co-founded the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS), and started the teaching course that veterinarians take to this day to be certified. Towne Properties Contact Information A needle in Brett’s hand Brett helped with the teaching courses and learned acupuncture at that time. When Ohio passed an acupuncture law in 2000 she decided to get her Masters Degree in Acupuncture. She was involved in getting an acupuncture law passed in Kentucky, and in 2005 opened an office in Florence. Acupuncture is a painless, drug-free approach to wellness. Acupuncture corrects blockages of energy in the body allowing energy to follow freely so the body can heal itself. The sterile, single use only needles are about the size of a hair. Often people say they feel nothing at all or just a very brief sensation. While most in the US think of acupuncture for pain, such as back pain, joint pain, migraines, etc., acupuncture can be used for so much more, such as infertility, asthma, insomnia, depression, etc. In Ancient China acupuncturists were paid to keep their patients well and not paid if they got sick! Of course going to the acupuncturist regularly to maintain wellness was well accepted there. Here in the US, with our model of medicine, we tend to wait for something to show up before seeing a health care practitioner. Acupuncture allows us a modality that may help reduce or eliminate the need for medications and the side effects of those medications. Brett also offers a unique approach for allergies with Advanced Allergy Therapeutics (AAT). This is a needless approach for reducing or eliminating symptoms of allergies or sensitivities to airborne, contact, pet, food and environmental allergies or sensitivities. For centuries, the world has been fascinated with the idea that the ‘little folk’ live among us and have the power to spread magic and mischief throughout our own homes and gardens. A fairy garden is a tiny space created and tended with love. The design and components are limited only by your imagination and the fairies encourage you to be extracreative in crafting the perfect abode. I like to think there’s a wee bit of Tinkerbelle in all of us, and adding a fairy garden (always leaving room for the fairies to dance) to our own garden is a way of participating in this centuries old tradition of trying to please the spirits and gain their favors. Being of Irish ancestry, I’ve always had a fondness for the wee folk, and I became interested in fairy gardens about five years ago, when our first granddaughter was old enough to want to explore the back yard. What makes up a fairy garden is simple: it’s basically a miniature garden with added touches that give the appearance of a tiny creature (and friends) residing in it. What can be found there is only limited by your imagination, so have fun with it! Our original garden was on the top of a small castoff metal table placed in a secluded area out back, to give the impression we had ‘stumbled’ upon a magical location. I buried the legs a little to make it just the right height, and used dirt & moss as the base. We added a few of those tiny ‘steppable’ plants used between paving stones in walkways, a small cottage (birdhouse), a seashell pathway and small stones with fossils for a fence. Of course, the fairies loved it because if you build it, they will come! Over the years, the fairy garden has expanded to include the base of an old tree stump with a little fairy door, a two story cottage, a garden for the neighboring trolls and other fun stuff the grandgirlies have wanted to add. We’ve also ‘discovered’ a small canoe and boat near the edge of our water feature which indicate the wee folk have arrived on our shores… If you want to start out with a movable and more manageable indoor/outdoor container garden, you can use a large shallow bowl or consider using a vintage suitcase, hatbox or a flat wicker basket as your indoor container. Lay down a base of dirt (if you’re adding a tiny plant), craft store moss, aquarium gravel, fine mulch, or a combination of things. Décor is the next step. Since you won’t be in the know regarding the whereabouts of the local Gnome Depot, just keep in mind fairies love to recycle shiny baubles, castoff doll furniture, bottle caps, thimbles, wooden thread spools, seashells, bits of old jewelry-anything whimsical to add to the feeling of magic. Take a second look before you cast away that one chipped teacup your Aunt Ethel gave you-fairies love hand painted bathtubs! I’m into yard sales, so I’m always on the lookout for little treasures as an offering for our wee friends. Nonetheless, you still need to consider longevity as a key factor in creating, and following, a long-term investment strategy. A nd your projected lifespan may be longer than you had thought. Men who turned 65 in 2010 can expect to live another 18.6 years, while women who reached 65 that same year can anticipate another 20.7 years, according to the 2011 Social Security Trustees Report. And these figures are just averages; depending on your health and family history of longevity, you could well spend two, or even three, decades in retirement. Keep investing. Put away as much mon- Possibly because people are now realizing they may have to support themselves for far longer than earlier generations did, they seem to be growing increasingly concerned about running out of money in their later years. In fact, in a poll of people ages 44 to 75, sponsored by Allianz Life Insurance, 61 percent said they fear depleting their assets more than they fear dying. Re-assess your retirement age. If you enjoy your work, you might consider staying at your job a few years later than originally intended. Those extra years of income, not to mention extra contributions to your 401(k) and potentially bigger Social Security payouts, can make a big difference to your retirement lifestyle. So, if you’re concerned about outliving your resources, what steps should you take, both now and during your retirement? Here are a few ideas: ey as you can afford for your retirement. Take advantage of tax-deferred accounts, such as your 401(k) and traditional IRA, or tax-free accounts, such as a Roth IRA. (Roth IRA earnings are tax-free provided you’ve had your account at least five years and you don’t start taking withdrawals until you’re at least 59-1/2.) And keep investing, despite the inevitable market volatility you’ll encounter along the way. Delay taking Social Security. As the laws now stand, you can start taking Social Security as young as 62, but your monthly checks will be bigger when you reach your “full” retirement age. You’ll get your biggest monthly Social Security RealEstateResource April Triple Crown Life checks if you wait until age 70, when they “max out,” but many people feel that waiting that long may not be worth it, when weighing the lost years of any payments against the unknown variable of life expectancy. Calculate your “withdrawal rate.” Once you retire, it’s essential that you know how much you can withdraw each year from your investments without running out of money. Your withdrawal rate depends on a variety of factors, including your age, size of portfolio, risk tolerance and retirement lifestyle. A financial professional can help you calculate your initial withdrawal rate and adjust it as time goes on. The possibility of outliving your resources is not a pleasant thought. But by taking the steps described above you can go a long way toward taking the fear out of longevity, leaving you free to fully enjoy an active retirement. There are many justifications about it; for example, some people say that liposuction could give a flattened shape to your abdomen, face or neck. True, liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that permanently removes the fat in a particular area and helps stimulate and tighten the skin thus giving it a more firm and toner appearance. Liposuction is also done on the face, arm, chin, breast and pubic areas, but the most common one as per statistics is the abdominal liposuction. This is really a boon to men and women who have crossed 40. People who cross 40 are most frustrated with their sagging abdomen and they find that exercises that concentrate on the tummy are quite time consuming. Therefore most of the people prefer abdominal liposuction. Pros of Abdominal Liposuction Liposuction is one of the most modern and safe cosmetic techniques that helps patients look beautiful within two hours. Sound interesting? The entire procedure takes two hours and the patients can resume their normal activities within 48 hours. This procedure is utilized by people whose abdomen begins to accumulate fat. Men usually have fats deposited in the abdomen thus leading to large belly and women call it love handles. Women usually experience this after their delivery. Liposuction is a very safe procedure and it helps people regain their confidence level. Today the job market relies on external presentation; therefore liposuction acts like a savior to those who lack natural beauty. Research shows that liposuction also helps people prevent many health problems because researchers have proven that health problems are caused mainly due to fats deposited around the middle part of the body. By removal of fats, people will suffer less from heart problems due to cholesterol, diabetes, liver problems, etc. Cons of Abdominal Liposuction As every good thing has side effects, liposuction also has its own disadvantage. If the abdominal liposuction is done to remove nominal fats then the patient can resume light desk jobs within 48 hours of the operation but if the fat amount is quite high then the patient might have to stay in the hospital overnight for supervision. Risk factors come only when large amounts of fats are removed by abdominal liposuction. Fat in the body is removed by the doctor using stainless steel cannula, so when the amount of fat is less, the action is done with high precision but when the amount of fat is more the doctor tends to use big cannula so that he can suck the fats in larger quantity. This kind of action can sometimes puncture the nearby organs. Due to this the procedure can be sometimes fatal. Therefore to avoid such risks the patient should go in for small sittings and remove small amounts of fat instead of opting for one shot. Hence to avoid risks, understand the procedure well and go through the record of the doctor. Always find a doctor that specializes in abdominal liposculpture.
