Welcome to Your New Resource Center!

Welcome to Your New Resource Center!
Invitation from Executive Director, Dawn Davies
One short year ago, on June 1, 2014 we came together to celebrate the
long awaited ground-breaking ceremony!
Excavation and construction took all summer. In late fall, happy animals were
moved out of the dark, old, small, inadequate building into the new, bright
and cheerful dog kennels.
In November, with mixed emotions, we said goodbye to the old building that
served our community and pets for 40+ years. Then the walls came down!
Staff and volunteers worked out of temporary modular units and continued
to care for over 4,000 lost, stray, injured, sick and homeless animals while
construction continued around them.
Finally! On May 7, 2015 the new shelter building was open to the public.
The very next day, the old Animal Care & Control House was demolished.
As I write this, we are still settling into our new “digs” and preparing to
celebrate this amazing building with YOU, our supporters who made this
happen.
Because of your support, we are now so much more than “Just” a
shelter. We now have the capacity to be a Resource Center for pets and
the people who love them.
Please join us on June 27th to Celebrate and tour Your new
Animal Resource Center!
Welcome to Your New Resource Center!
We are so excited to share this new building with our community and we could not have done it without you.
The vision for this critical project began to take shape about six years ago, spurred on by a major donation from Helen
Zilke. Her gift was a huge beginning, but we needed to more than double it to afford the type of building that would
serve our mission and last for many, many years. Tireless fundraising followed and thanks to generous gifts from scores
of individuals, companies and organizations who see the deep value of our work, we were able to move forward on our
dream.
Countless meetings and very careful consideration went into the design of this building, with a strong focus on comfort
to our animals, function, efficiency, economic savings and aesthetics.
The new facility will not only serve as a much more comfortable and effective shelter, but will also allow us to have
more programs for our community on topics such as animal welfare, training, spay/neuter, animal health and more.
Cheers to those who helped us get here and to the ones who keep us going!

shelter building, and together we will create
a bright future for the animals of our community.
To Honor and
Remember
Helen Zilke was the founding
donor of the campaign to build a
new animal shelter. To honor her
legacy, we built the Helen Zilke
Memorial Garden on the North
side of the new building. This
beautiful spot provides everyone
the ability to honor and
remember those they love, be
they human or pet. You can
purchase a tile or paver on our
website, by mail or in person.

We’re ready… Are you?
Central Washington has seen its fair share of wildfires and with the low snow
pack in the Cascades and very dry conditions, the 2015 fire season may be a
rough one. Wenatchee Valley Animal Care & Control is coordinating with
local volunteers and organizations in order to provide emergency response
and support for fire victims with pets.

Keep an evacuation pack and supplies handy for your pets. Make sure that
everyone in the family knows where it is. This kit should be clearly labeled
and easy to carry. For ideas on what to pack, check out our Resources tab on
www.wenatcheehumane.org.
If faced with an evacuation order, take your pets! Have several destinations
in mind, in the event that your first choice is also in danger. You should also
have a plan in place for a trusted friend or family member to provide
temporary care, if needed. Be aware that there are many pet friendly local
hotels. Club Pet offers free temporary shelter for pets with nowhere to go
and are under Level 3 evacuation. Club Pet can be reached at 888-PETS
(7387).
As always, in an emergency, dial 911. For a pet emergency, call Wenatchee
Valley Animal Care & Control at 662-9577 extension 1.
If you want to help our community and have fenced land for livestock, or
trucks and trailers to help move livestock and horses, or room for other pets,
please contact Sgt. Jody White, Director of Field Operations, and let her know
how you can help: 509-662-9577 ext. 409 or jwhite@wenatcheehumane.org.

There is a place for everyone to help!
My name is Tatianna Hankins and I am the new Foster Coordinator for WVHS.
I am excited and honored to take on this vital role in our shelter. Providing you with
the tools, support and knowledge needed to succeed as a foster is a main focus of mine.
Too many animals come into our shelter every year that cannot thrive in this environment. Foster
homes are an absolute necessity to their survival. With kitten season knocking on our door, we need
people willing to open up their homes as a temporary sanctuary until they are old enough to go up for
adoption. Please do not let inexperience or lack of knowledge with young kittens and puppies deter you
from becoming a foster parent, I will help you!
For more information please contact me by email, phone or come in to see me!

Completing Our Puzzle
As a Volunteer, you are an essential piece to our puzzle. Without you, our mission
would be incomplete.
Thank you for all that you do!
The final pieces of our new shelter are in place including a new area dedicated to our
Volunteers! Located off the main reception area, Volunteers can stash their jackets,
clock in and out and have a chat with me, your Volunteer Coordinator. Thank you all
for your hard work and dedication! I cannot say enough how grateful I am to have
such a wonderful group of people all working for the same cause: to keep our animals safe, happy and healthy and ensure that they get the best possible care and homes. Your big hearts amaze me every day and I’m proud to have you by
my side. Thank you. If you would like more information about becoming a volunteer, check out the
Volunteer tab at www.wenatcheehumane.org.

Vacation Planning? Don’t forget the pets!
Planning a vacation can be a fun and yet stressful time for any of us.
Please don’t forget these things for your pets:
• Make sure each pet has identification that is up to date.
• Provide your pet sitter with emergency contact information.
• Notify your vet that you will be away.
• Make sure your pets have all required shots up to date and keep a record of them with your pet.
• If you do not have a pet sitter, boarding is a good option.
Club Pet is a great option! (509) 888-PETS(7387).
