and gearing up for an amazing summer with our Summer Lovin

Australia turns to a more
#sustainablesummer
Written By: Holly Skerritt
What makes Australia so renowned;
it’s array of unique biodiversity, the
scorching summers or the relaxed,
distinctive qualities of the Aussie
population? All of these traits enable
Australia to be one of a kind amongst
the world, but what happens when one
of these attributes begins to vanish?
Alexandra Dash, the creative director
for Shapes in the Sand Swimwear, has
definitely thought well into the future
for what Australia is unfortunately
about to face and is currently facing.
The impacts from global warming,
unnecessary pollution and the
unreasonable political decisions have
all contributed to affecting the future of
Australia’s renowned biodiversity.
Establishing the brand in Sydney’s
northern beaches, Dash wishes to
spread her love for nature and the
beauty that each Australian summer
brings. Her addiction to swimwear
began at a young age, in which the
passion then developed into studying
design. Alexandra Dash believes in a
better, more stable future for not only
the Australian environment, but for the
whole world as she continually spreads
the message…
“It’s time to send love back to our
Earth”.
Shapes in the Sand Swimwear are an
eco-friendly and sustainable brand,
which produces products made from
only the highest quality materials and
organic fibres. As well as using ethical
page 22
gcmag - A Generation of Change december 2014
manufacturing processes, this brand
gives hope for Australia and the rest
of the world to embrace a healthy and
well-nourished earth.
Alexandra Dash has started
incorporating the hash tag
#sustainablesummer throughout
her social media to help spread the
brand’s vision. Dash strongly promotes
the vital messages on the Shapes in
the Sand Facebook and Instagram,
‘Shapesinthesandswim’. By purchasing
the gorgeous eco-friendly and Italian
fabric made swimwear, support is
instantly shown to help enable an
improved environment.
The latest campaign, ‘Into the Wild’,
is Shapes in the Sand spring/summer
2014/15 collection. It does not fall short
of impressing the clientele with the
variety of prints and nature inspired
colour palettes, which the brand is
well known for. In the future, Dash
wishes to launch a children’s swimwear
line, aiming to accomplish one of her
goals in educating the customers and
younger demographic.
Purchasing from Shapes in the Sand
is an easy way to make a difference
for the future of our biodiversity that
surrounds us; plus you will receive
an in-fashion and bold new summer
swimsuit as a bonus!

GCMAG was lucky enough to get to interview Daniela Cecilio CEO and
founder of ASAP54. A revolutionary app set to change the way you search
and shop for fashion.
What is ASAP54?
ASAP54 is a search engine for fashion, where users can search for fashion
in any way they want to. They can snap a picture of something they like
and find similar items without describing in words, or just simply enter a
combination of keywords to describe what you want to find.
How did you come up with this concept?
I came up with the concept behind ASAP54 as a frustrated shopper. I found
that search engines never quite captured what I was looking for, so I felt the
time was right to do something about it. I wanted to create a Google Search
for fashion to offer a more enjoyable way to search for items you lust, love or
need - from the real world to your wardrobe.
Why the name ASAP54?
ASAP stands for As Soon As Possible – because the app is very quick, just
three seconds and you get your results. I believe that if you see something
you love, you shouldn’t have to wait. As for the 54, that came from the
infamous Studio54 nightclub in New York City, which was the epitome of art
and fashion.
What new features shall people see with the 2.0 version?
The 2.0 version will have keyword search, a ‘what’s trending’ feature and
the ability to share your ASAPs with your wider community on Instagram,
Facebook and Twitter. We’re very excited about this as you can imagine!
Do you have any future plans for ASAP54?
We are launching an Android version of the app at the beginning of next year
and we are also looking to further explore other markets, as we want to bring
ASAP54 to the world.
What did you learn and what experiences from Farfetch.com that you have
applied to your new venture?
The pace of innovation in technology is extremely fast, and to succeed, you
need to reflect this in any new venture in the tech space. I learnt a lot of great
skills from the people I worked with at Farfetch. Most importantly, to listen
to people before making decisions – that was definitely the most valuable
lesson I learned.

Summer is without a doubt my favourite time
of year! The weather is warming up, the
days are getting longer and Christmas is
almost upon us. But just because we’re on
summer holidays doesn’t mean our workouts
need to take a break too! Here are a few tips
to kick start your Active Living journey this
summer and discover how you can MOVE
NOURISH and BELIEVE your way towards a
fitter and healthier 2015.

Take your workout
Outdoors
One of my favourite things about
summer is changing up my workout
and getting active outdoors. I find I’m
far less likely to skip my workout and hit
‘snooze’ in the mornings when the sun
is up at 5am and it’s warm outside. Here
are some of my favourite ways to get my
move on when summer comes around:
Walking
Whether it’s setting out on a weekend
hike with my husband Bill, power
walking along the Noosa headland with
my girlfriends or taking my dog, Roger
for a walk after work, walking is a great
way to move my body and get my heart
rate up whilst clearing my mind.
Bootcamp
I recently discovered how much I love
bootcamp after attending a session
in my local park with a friend. It was
quite a change from my usual strength
training and yoga routine with lots of
sprints, squats and burpees, but I loved
every minute of it – and it’s definitely a
fun way to amp up your cardio!
Circuit Training
My husband Bill and I just started a
new workout in the mornings, which
we absolutely love! It involves 12 sets
of high intensity moves such as jump
lunges, sumo squats and push ups x
20 reps each with a sprint up the hill
outside our house between each set.
It’s all over in 30-45 minutes and we’re
ready for a good stretch, breakfast then
off to the office.
page 38
gcmag - A Generation of Change december 2014
page 39
Eat seasonally:
When it comes to food, I buy locally
and in-season as I find locally-grown
foods are always fresher, taste better
and most often less expensive! Summer
in our house is all about fresh produce,
and eating seasonally is the best way
to get the nutrients you need on a daily
basis. Some of my favourite things
to pick up at the farmer’s markets
right now are watermelon, berries and
cherries, stone fruits (mango smoothies
anyone?), broccoli, cauliflower,
eggplant and tomatoes.
To take advantage of this produce, my
Chilli and Garlic Prawn Skewers and
Tamari, Lime and Sesame Beef with
broccoli stir fry are on heavy rotation
in the kitchen. For dessert, my Pear
and Berry Crumble with Vanilla Labne
is always a crowd pleaser, and my
Passionfruit and Mango Yoghurt Pops
are the perfect way to cool off at the
end of a hot summer’s day!
You can find these recipes and many
more in my new book, Nourish: The Fit
Woman’s Cookbook, which shows how
food can be easy to prepare, as well a
nutritious and delicious all at the same
time!
Celebrate
Christmas the
Lorna Jane way:
I love the tradition of Christmas and
one of the best parts is enjoying all of
the (not so healthy) foods my family
have prepared every year for as long
as I can remember. After all, Christmas
is the one time of year you can eat
whatever your heart desires without
feeling guilty! The key for me is getting
back to healthy eating when the holiday
is over, and limiting my indulgences in
the lead up to Christmas. My advise
is to be prepared this festive season
with healthy alternatives to traditional
Christmas fare and celebrate the Lorna
Jane way.
My Raw Christmas Pudding Cake
Pops are the perfect after dinner treat
or handmade gift when popped in a
mason jar and tied with a ribbon. You
can also make a big batch of these
beauties and store them in the freezer
to bring out at a moment’s notice when
the festive season hits. I also love to
serve a selection of my homemade dips
with vegie sticks for pre dinner nibbles
and always have a batch of my Tamari
and Honey nut nibbles on hand for
when unexpected visitors drop by.
Sticking to these healthier versions of
your favourite Christmas treats will help
keep those unwanted holiday kilos at
bay, and might even show your friends
and family how delicious healthy and
nutritious food can be!

Pear and berry
crumbles
with vanilla labne
You need to make the vanilla labne 24
hours ahead of time, for this recipe)
2 medium pears (460g), peeled, cored,
cut into 1.5cm (¾-inch) pieces
1 teaspoon raw honey
2 tablespoons filtered water
1½ cups (185g) fresh or frozen mixed
berries
1/3 cup (55g) almond kernels, chopped
coarsely
1/3 cup (45g) macadamia, chopped
coarsely
1/3 cup (50g) brown rice flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons rolled oats
1 tablespoon pepitas (pumpkin seeds)
1 tablespoon white chia seeds
2 tablespoons cold-pressed extra-virgin
coconut oil
1 tablespoon raw honey, extra
vanilla labne
1 cup (280g) unsweetened greek-style
yoghurt
pinch Himalayan pink salt
1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste
1
To make vanilla labne, combine
yoghurt and salt in a small bowl. Line
a sieve with two layers of muslin or a
page 46
clean chux cloth; place sieve over a deep
bowl or jug. Spoon yoghurt mixture into
sieve, gather cloth and tie into a ball with
kitchen string. Refrigerate 24 hours or
until thick, gently squeezing occasionally
to encourage the liquid to drain. Discard
liquid. Stir vanilla (or maple syrup or
cinnamon) into labne.
2
Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F.
3
Combine pear, honey and the
water in a small saucepan; bring to the
boil. Reduce heat; simmer, covered, about
5 minutes or until pear is just tender.
Remove from heat; stir in berries. Divide
pear mixture into 2 x 1½ cup (375ml)
ovenproof dishes or jars.
4
Process nuts, flour and cinnamon
until nuts are coarsely chopped. Transfer
to a medium bowl; stir in oats, pepitas
and chia seeds. Add coconut and honey;
mix well. Spoon crumble mixture over fruit
(piling crumble high on top of fruit as it will
sink down a little during cooking).
5
Bake crumbles about 20 minutes
or until crumble topping is golden and
crisp. Serve with vanilla labne.

It’s no surprise that he has been labelled one of Australia’s best success stories, not
to mention the recent release of his 8th studio album ‘Madness’ and national arena
tour to follow.
I was lucky enough to chat with Guy Sebastian about his career, new album and
upcoming tour in 2015.
Your career has boomed since your appearance on Australian
Idol in 2003, did you ever imagine you would have this much
success?
Not at all. I was a fairly sheltered kid from Adelaide, a weird looking kid that didn’t
really belong in a photo, let alone an album cover. I always wanted to be a muso, I
thought maybe I would be behind the scenes writing and producing for other people
or something. I knew I liked to sing, I guess I just didn’t really have that confidence
that I would be a well-known person or anything. My dream was to sing at the local
Carols by Candlelight and I thought “Gosh, if I do that I’ve made it!” There’s so many

guy’s new album madness out now
people I’ve worked with and met, it’s just one big blur for a weird little Bogan kid
from Adelaide.
What does it feel like to be releasing your 8th studio album
‘Madness’?
It feels amazing. It’s out of my hands now. I think for so long I’ve been a control
freak and very pedantic with the process of creating this piece of work and
piece of art that I’ve stewed over for the last two years and every nuance and
little detail I’ve gone over. There’s so much work that goes into it. It’s a bit scary
but I’ve done as much as I can do and I’m proud of it.
What has been your biggest inspiration for Madness?
It’s really just about stopping to smell the roses and not getting swept away
by the busyness of life and just to appreciate life and find the beauty in the
mundane.
What makes this album different from your others?
I think it’s probably the most soulful album I’ve done. I guess growing up you
start to feel different things and start to experience different emotions and your
song writing becomes a bit deeper. I feel like my lyrics are definitely much more
thought provoking now and I’m really enjoying singing these songs and enjoying
the soulful nature of it.
You also have your national tour happening in 2015, what
can your fans expect from it?
It’s my first arena tour for starters and I’ve never been in venues this big which
mean there’s really not a lot of limitation as to the scope of production. For me,
I feel like I’ve made quite an epic sounding album as far as how dynamic it is,
there’s loads of big horns and big beats and big strings. For me to replicate that
live would also replicate it visually in an arena. I’m just really excited about it.
To get your copy of ‘Madness’ head to iTunes, Google Play, JB Hi-Fi or
Sanity. The Madness tour will kick off in February 2015 playing Wollongong,
Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. To get your hands on
tickets to one of six shows, head to guysebastian.com for more details.

Dami Im
Dami Im is beautiful. Smart, sweet, modest. It is hard to believe
that such a gentle young lady holds one of the most powerful,
prominent and well-known voices in the Australian music industry
today. Coinciding with her 26th birthday, on October 17th Dami
released her first original album, Heart Beats.
“In Heart Beats, every track is very different – I like the variety I
have in the album. There are a lot of positive and optimistic songs,
and I want to be able to share that with others. This album is a true
reflection of me, and really, I just want to make people happy.”
In her music as well as her personal life, Dami has been incredibly
busy. “I’ve never been on so many flights! Noah [her husband] and
I have just come back from China, where I was performing. It was
aired on China MTV, which was amazing. A few months ago we
were in Singapore as well. So yes, very busy! [laughs].”
Surprisingly, Dami’s background in music is classical. She
graduated in 2009 from the University of Queensland with first
class honours in a Bachelor of Music. Successively, she completed
a Masters of Arts degree in contemporary voice at Griffith
University. Prior to her X-Factor success in 2013, Dami was a
music and piano teacher.
“You know, I really look up to Ed Sheeran. He’s a wonderful singer
and songwriter, and he’s able to express himself without going
along with all of the clichés that come with fame and the music
industry. Yeah, he’s a pretty big inspiration for me.”
In December, Dami will be touring Australia with world renowned
musician John Legend on his ‘All of Me’ tour as a supporting
performer. Alongside this, Dami will be performing at Carols in the
Domain, as she did last year.
“I absolutely loved doing Carols in the Domain last year; it was
such a beautiful event. I’m so excited to be going back this year.
And the tour with John … it’s going to be amazing. So many things
to look forward to!” she laughs.
As for her future, Dami is excited, an animated tone in her voice.
“Well, everything with Heart Beats is going so well, so I’m eager
to write some new songs, and hopefully tour next year as well! So
yes, very exciting things ahead.”
Dami Im is an incredibly talented, humble young lady. Her touching
and fun album, Heart Beats, is available now!

The Stafford Brothers are the epitome of international
music success. Hailing from Australia, the brothers
are the hottest exports to hit the United States and are
currently ranked the #1 DJ duo in Australia for the 3rd
year running.
Fresh of a successful reality show, Matt and Chris
Stafford are conquering the American music scene with
their fresh beats and unique sound. Their debut single
‘Hello,’ featuring Lil Wayne and Christina Milian went
triple platinum, tearing up the charts and cementing
their status as Billboard’s ‘Artist to Watch’ for 2015.
Despite such success, the boys remain incredibly down
to earth and hardworking. Although they described it as
“pretty special” to hear their song on the radio, “we are
really pushing to get to the next level!”
Being the first electronic dance music act to sign
to Cash Money Records, Matt said their dream
collaboration would be with Pharrell Williams and
Jay-Z. Yet outside their musical talents, the brothers
are incredibly business savvy having their own clothing
brand, nightclubs, online DJ training courses and radio
show. Not bad for two boys who just wanted to play
guitar in a rock band!
For most of 2014, the boys have been busy producing
new music whilst on the road. Having performed
everywhere from Mykonos to Ibiza with some of the
biggest names in the business, staying true to their
roots they said it was Byron Bay that took the title as
one of the best places to perform a gig… and Australia
couldn’t be more proud of our homegrown rock stars.
While they currently call LA home, the boys said they
can’t wait to give Australia some love when they return
to kick of their December tour and prepare to release
some much-anticipated new music. There’s no denying
the future looks even brighter for the world’s most
famous brotherly duo!

Perhaps the most well-connected person you’ve
never heard of, American music photographer
Rukes routinely attends the hottest festivals and
events all across the globe. His list of clients boasts
an impressive number of popular music acts, venues
and media outlets that he has worked for over
his decade long career. If you’ve heard of a DJ,
chances are Rukes has shot them in action. From
Calvin Harris, to Dillon Francis, to Tiesto and Armin
van Buuren, Rukes has been there to capture every
moment.
This man clearly has something special, but admits
that he fell into the industry by accident. He says
that he has always been a fan of the music, but
growing up in New York appearances by popular
DJs were few and far between. That all changed
when he moved to Los Angeles.
“On the weekends I’d go to Avalon Hollywood in LA
and I’d get to see all the DJs that I’d always wanted
to see. It was a pretty cool experience. I just started
taking pictures for fun and then eventually Avalon
starting liking the pictures and they’re like ‘we should
hire you to come every weekend’.”
This is the break which allowed Rukes to begin his
meteoric rise to becoming one of the world’s best
music photographers.
Rukes has one of the most enviable seats in the
house while he is working, up on stage with the DJ,
taking photos of them and the crowd. He says that
the feeling is tough to describe.
“It’s a huge mass of people and it just seems super
super grandiose. After the first couple of times I
did it, I was like, ‘oh my God this is amazing!’ But
after a while it becomes almost a same old kind of
thing, and the audience just seems like another prop
page 64
gcmag - A Generation of Change december 2014
in the photo. But I mean the part that always gets
me is when everyone does a sing-a-long or they do
something unusual… that never gets old.”
Through his line of work, Rukes has been exposed
to some of the most exciting moments on the music
scene. One that stands out for him was at last year’s
Holy Ship! festival in Miami, USA. Tiёsto was on the
ship as a hidden guest, and the only thing festivalgoers were told was to be at a certain stage at a
certain time.
“… all of a sudden Tiёsto comes out and everyone
was like ‘oh my god.’ It was the last person they
expected and then from there it was crazy because
all the DJs knew about it, so everyone piled in the
booth and it was just crazy crazy fun.”
Rukes also has many great stories to tell about the
people he has met on tour. Zedd is “funny and
wacky,” while Martin Garrix is “super hyper.”
“Dillon Francis is of course the greatest character
there is. If he quit dj-ing to do stand up, he would
probably be one of the most successful comedians
out there. It’s always fun hanging out with him.”
Next up for Rukes is Stereosonic. He says he
always loves coming back to Australia, and calls
Stereosonic a “family kind of tour,” in the sense that
he gets to hang out with all of his friends over here.
Out of this year’s line-up, Rukes is most looking
forward to seeing Calvin Harris.
“Calvin keeps to himself a lot, and he always makes
great music and the crowd loves him. I’m one of
the few people he trusts, so whenever I see him on
the line-up I know he’ll want me there to take good
pictures. So it’s always a good feeling.”

Australian DJ Kaz James has had a
stellar year. In between travelling the
world and playing shows at some of
the biggest party destinations in the
world, he released a track with David
Guetta and had his new single “Show
me Love” spend three weeks at the
top of the Aria Club Charts. While
touring in Australia, Kaz sat down
with us for a chat.
Hi Kaz, thanks for chatting to us. Is
it good to be back on home soil?
Yes, definitely. I’m quite privileged to
be able to have lived overseas for ten
years now, and come home and do
as many shows as do and still have
fans and people turning up.
You’ve been travelling a lot lately,
what have been some of the
highlights of the last few months?
I don’t know really, they are all
amazing. I guess for me Ibiza was
really special this year. I did 25
shows and it still has an amazing
energy about it. I also had my own
residency in Mykonos this year. We
ended up doing one of the biggest
nights the club ever had in history.
That was definitely a highlight:
especially as I was quite nervous
to put on my own night in Mykonos.
We booked a line up and we had
different DJs from NERVO to Steve
Aoki to Sneaky Sound System, just
basically my friends on the line up
which was really cool.
Your most recent single “Show
Me All Your Love” spent three
weeks on the top of the Aria Club
Charts. Did you expect it to be that
successful?
Definitely not. I didn’t really know
how it worked so when my label rang
me up and said “you’re number one,”
I was like “Really?” I’m very happy
that everyone supported the single.

Do you think 2014 will have
been your most successful year
professionally, so far?
gcmag - A Generation of Change december 2014
I don’t know, it depends what you
consider professionally successful.
Is it the year I sold the most records?
No, when I did Body Rockers we sold
millions of records. This year I put a
record out with David Guetta, “Show
me Love” went number one, I did a
remix that went number one in the
UK. It has been a very good year,
but it depends on how you measure
it.
You just mentioned David
Guetta, and you too made a song
together earlier this year, and you
performed on stage with him at
Isle of Dreams. How did it all come
about? How was performing on
stage with him?
I’ve known David for a long time.
He asked me to open up his world
tour last year and during doing all
the shows with him, I think maybe
it was a flight back from Germany
on David’s private jet, as you do,
we were going through music and I
played him some things I had been
doing like the guitar riff that is in
the track and a vocal idea, and he
liked it. He asked if he could work
on it so he did the drop and we just
kept going back and forth until we
finished it. He’s an amazing guy. He
works really hard, is really talented
and most of all is just a great guy. It
has been a really good experience
working with him. I’m very lucky to
have him on my side.
Do you think there could be
another collaboration in the future?
Yeah, we’ve been talking about
it. He is knee-deep finishing his
album. I think definitely, when we get
a second together we’ll try and do
something.
Back to your life in London, I was
reading that you actually own
four cafes there. How did that all
happen?
Basically I needed a new studio
space in London and my mate had
this building in Shoreditch and he
page 75
wanted to get rid of it. The rent was super
cheap because it was this old school lease.
So I asked him to give me the second floor
so I could put my studio there. Then he
asked what I wanted to do with the ground
floor and I said, “I don’t know, just put a
coffee shop there or something.” Then we
began to rent the studio out commercially so
we would have people all sorts of musicians
hanging out downstairs, so it got quite well
known quite quickly.

kaz will be touring nationally with
stereosonic this november - december
Do you ever pull the early morning shifts
and start at 5:30am?
No, no, I’m more of a creative director and
my business partner David runs all the
day-to-day stuff. I’m quite lucky to have him
there so I can focus on my music.
And you get to take advantage of all the
free coffee as well.
Yep, which is kind of dangerous when you
are sitting in the studio all day, drinking
coffee. And then at night the bar does
cocktails. So you get high on the coffee and
drunk on the cocktails.
What’s up next for you?
I’m in London for a week, then I fly to New
York for Halloween, then Day of the Dead
in LA, then back to Europe for some more
shows, then back to Oz for Stereosonic. Lots
of travel coming up.
Kaz James’s single “Show Me All Your
Love” is out now. He will be performing at
Stereosonic later this year. Tickets on sale
