Cocalico Eagles Wrestling Newsletter, December 2008
Cocalico Eagles Wrestling Newsletter, December 2008 LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE!!! I’m sure you are all aware the Cocalico wrestling season is now officially on its way. . We have a very competitive LL section II and tournament schedule this year that will provide not only our varsity with great competition but also provide our future varsity guys with just as many opportunities to compete. Our outlook for a Section II title is positive but we will need to overcome Section favorite E-Town. Nutrition, rest, and mental attitude are components that are sometimes overlooked by our athletes. Water, water and more water. Our bodies are made up of 70% of water not sports drinks so it is extremely important that our wrestlers remain hydrated with water. Water keeps our bodies functioning at optimal levels. In addition, water helps keep our wrestlers mentally acute, and aids in maintaining a high metabolism. Food types are always a topic of discussion with wrestlers and their families. Try to keep “real” foods in a wrestlers diet. Think in terms of two groups: types and sources. Types would be proteins, carbs, and fats. Sources would be bad, good, and optimum. A combination of carbs and fats from good/optimum sources results in good fuel and quick recovery for the body especially during tournaments. The quicker (45minute window) a wrestler is able to consume water and food after practice and matches the quicker the recovery time. Getting enough rest is another area that we preach to our wrestlers. Rest is generally broken into two categories: passive and active. Passive rest (sleeping) is crucial in allowing our wrestlers to recover from daily training. It is important that they receive 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Sometimes wrestlers find it difficult to sleep but reading, listening to music, or taking a warm bath can help the body relax and prepare for a deep night’s sleep. Active rest (light aerobic or stretching activity) provides the body a break from strenuous training. Active rest days could be on Sundays and nonpractice days over the holidays when our wrestlers have an extra 30-40minutes to put in a light workout. Mental attitude is an area that separates two competing athletes of same ability. Involving our wrestlers in goal setting, motivation of excellence, mental preparation and mental focusing techniques will provide them an edge when it comes to competition. All of our HS wrestlers have written goals for the season and beyond, please encourage our wrestlers to evaluate their goals each Sunday. Motivation for excellence will generally come from within and extrinsic motivation. The level of commitment, dedication and determination of our wrestlers to reach their goals will directly impact their motivation. Please encourage our wrestlers to persevere and work through adversity. Each wrestler is encouraged to develop and write down their mental preparation/focusing plan for matches and tournaments. Things such as pre-match routine, visualization script, attitude, and harnessing pressure are just a few areas that will aid our wrestlers in becoming the best they can be. Parents, ask to see your son’s mental preparation/focusing plan, discuss it with and support him any way that you can. These components of Nutrition, rest, and mental attitude are not only skills to be successful in wrestling but in life. Finally, I’d like to thank wrestling parents and fans in our community for their continued support of Cocalico wrestling. During these difficult times our wrestling family is growing, but we need additional help. Remember, it’s the little things people do that make a program successful. Come to our matches and tournaments, volunteer for a couple hrs at our Jr. high tournament, gather donations for our concessions, or even help coach (we have a strong need for volunteers at all levels). Till next time, CJ Banquet Update The Cocalico Wrestling Team annual end-of-season banquet th will be held Friday, March 13 at Swamp Christian Fellowship in Reinholds.
