March 25, 2006 Scott Candland Joins Outrigger Enterprises By Barry Wallace I join Human Resources in welcoming Scott Candland to Hawaii and Outrigger Enterprises, Inc., as our new Vice President of Operations for our Condominium/Timeshare Division. Scott replaces T.J. Oesterling, who had an opportunity to relocate to the Big Island with Hilton Grand Vacations. Scott brings tremendous resort and property management experience to our team, and knows how to make sure condo and Scott Candland vacation ownership guests have a wonderful stay. He comes to Outrigger with more than 25 years of experience in managing destination properties across the country. Most recently, he served as managing director of Advantage Hospitality Services in Scottsdale, Arizona, a diversified company that he founded to provide management, marketing, acquisitions, and development expertise to hotels, resorts, and the investment community throughout the Western United States and Caribbean. Prior to that, he was the executive vice president of operations and development for Discover Resorts, an international marketing and management company, also based in Scottsdale, Arizona. Scott’s background also includes management positions with a variety of resorts throughout the Western United States, including McCormick Land Company, Premier Resorts (Village Resorts International), Cathedral Canyon Resort, Rippling River Resort, and the Lakes Country Club & Monterey Country Club. Early in his Continued on page 7 Cyclone Ravages Australia Outrigger employees step forward to assist those in need Last Monday, Tropical Cyclone Larry, with winds up to 180 mph, smashed into the coastal community of Innisfail—about 60 miles south of Cairns, Queensland, Australia. The storm, the worst cyclone to hit the region in decades, caused extensive damage. Amazingly, no one was killed and authorities reported that fewer than ten people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Property damage was severe, however. Hotels and resorts in the Innisfail area, along with homes, hospitals, and the area’s sugar and banana plantations, were hit hard. E-Mail Policy Reminder By Alan White With a recent increase in the number of observed and reported abuses of our Company e-mail systems and platforms, it seems that a timely reminder on the business nature of our corporate e-mail system is in order. 1. The Policy on Electronic Mail, from our Employee Handbook, is reprinted on the right, as a refresher. It stresses the business nature of our e-mail systems. 2. Chain letter initiation, propagation and/or forwarding is never appropriate using Company e-mail. 3. SPAM is increasing at a faster rate than legitimate e-mail. Do not initiate SPAM, and if you receive significant amounts of SPAM, please advise our System Administrators, through the IT Help Desk, and we will improve the filters to reduce or eliminate it. 4. Attachments to e-mail are growing as images and other data files are routinely attached. While most of these are definitely business related, please be aware that attachments over 5-Mb in size are potentially problems for all other mail throughput in the system. Please attempt to limit attachments to less than 5-Mb. 5. Maintenance tools are getting better, and easier for you to use to help with your use of e-mail as a business tool. IT will be sending all users, the following guidelines: • SPAM – how to use and tune SPAM filtering from your workstation • WebMail – how to securely access your business E-mail from any web browser I think we all agree that the convenience, speed, and reliability of this business tool has made our work lives easier. Let’s all continue to use it responsibly. Outrigger/OHANA Hotels & Resorts’ Policy on Electronic Mail • Use of Electronic Mail The electronic mail system shall be used primarily for the communication of business-related messages or information, but incidental and occasional personal messages may be permitted where appropriate, subject to the standards and procedures set forth below. • Ownership of Electronic Mail Messages All electronic mail messages, including incidental and occasional personal messages, are and will remain the property of Outrigger. Therefore, none of the messages may be sold, transmitted, conveyed, or communicated in any way to anyone outside of the Company without the express written authorization. • Privacy and Outrigger’s Right to Inspect Electronic Mail Messages The electronic mail system, and all messages created or communicated on the system, will be subject to inspection and search by designated Company E-Mail representatives at all times. However, monitoring of electronic mail messages is not intended to be a routine matter, but something that is done in a manner consistent with the Company’s legitimate rights and business needs. Thus, no one other than designated E-Mail representatives will be permitted to inspect or search another employee’s E-Mail messages without the express written consent of that employee. • No Solicitation/No Distribution Policy for E-Mail Use of the electronic mail must be consistent with the Company’s general policy which forbids employees from distributing literature in support of any cause, product, individual, or organization on Company premises during working time or in working areas, or soliciting during their working time or during the working time of the employee being solicited. The electronic mail system may not be used for such prohibited solicitation or distribution. • Harassment-Free and Equal Employment Opportunity Policies Use of the electronic mail system must be consistent with the Company’s general policies which prohibit harassment of any other employees and which guarantees equal employment opportunities to all qualified individuals. Therefore, creation or communication of sexual, sexually explicit or offensive messages, cartoons or jokes, ethnic slurs, racial epithets, or any other statement or image that might be construed as harassment or disparagement is strictly forbidden. Saturday Briefing Page 3 Society of Seven at Hawaii Theatre for Special Engagement Discounted tickets available for Outrigger and OHANA employees By Fran Kirk The Society of Seven (SOS), led by original members Tony Ruivivar and Bert Sagum, along with several special guests, will make a special three-show appearance at the historic Hawaii Theatre next month as part of an international tour the group is currently on. Filipino headliner Martin Nievera has been added to the line-up when the Society of Seven and Lani Misalucha perform three concerts on April 7 and 8. This will be an extra special performance, as the group will be paying tribute to the late Gary Bautista, group member who died unexpectedly in January. Standing in for Gary will be former member Little Albert Maligmat. In addition to being part of the musical tribute, Martin Nievera also will host the shows on Friday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, April 8, at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Presented by OHANA Hotels & Resorts in conjunction with Outrigger Entertainment, the concerts are a follow-up to SOS and Lani’s sold-out engagement at the Hawaii Theatre in February 2005. Tickets are currently on sale at the Hawaii Theatre Box Office, 1130 Bethel Street, for $45, $55, and $65, with a $5 discount for Outrigger and OHANA employees. Lani Misalucha will be one of the special guests joining the Society of Seven at a special three-show appearance at the historic Hawaii Theatre Saturday Briefing Page 4 Crooner Martin Nievera is often called the “Concert King” of the Philippines. He spent much of his childhood in Hawaii as his father, Filipino balladeer Bert Nievera, was then a part of the Society of Seven. Since returning to the Philippines in 1982 to pursue his musical career, Martin has become a top pop artist and awardwinning recording star, as well as a popular television host. With platinum albums to his credit, he is an international superstar who has toured the U.S., Canada, Guam, the Middle East, and Singapore. The Society of Seven, Waikiki headliners for more than three decades, joined with Lani Misalucha, “Philippines’ Entertainer of the Year,” for a just-concluded, year-long engagement at Bally’s in Las Vegas. They are now on a national and international tour, having just sold out shows in Guam and on the Mainland, with the Honolulu engagements part of the line-up. From singing to impersonations, from dancing to comedy, Society of Seven with Lani Misalucha has been praised in Las Vegas for combining “every show on the strip on one stage.” The lavish production coming to the Hawaii Theatre incorporates blues, ballads, humor, and the outstanding instrumental talents of the SOS members--Tony Ruivivar, Bert Sagum, Randy Abellar, Roy Guerzo, Hoku Low, and Wayne Wakai, plus former member Little Albert Maligmat, who has replaced Bautista for the engagements. Bringing down the house with SOS regularly at the Jubilee Theater at Bally’s Casino was their “first female member,” Filipina superstar Lani Misalucha, easily considered Asia’s singing sensation and known as the “Diva’s Diva.” Known for her full five octaves of heavenly music, Lani easily shifts from ballad to pop rock to jazz, singing everything from opera to the hits of Whitney Houston and others she impersonates in the show. With five albums to her credit, including her recent “Loving You” for Viva Records, she was named “Philippines’ Entertainer of the Year 2002” in the Aliw Awards. Her honors also include Musika Manila for her song “One More Time,” Katha Awards for her “All Heart” album, Asia Songfest Award for her “Handle with Care” and the Awit Awards “Best Female Recording Artist” of 2000 for “Can’t Stop Loving You.” She has appeared in solo concerts in Los Angeles at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and The Grand Olympic Auditorium and has crossed over from the Filipino audience to the mainstream. Resort Management Conference By Dr. Richard Kelley At the conference, attended by nearly 200 resort professionals, I was a member of three panels, which discussed trends in hotel economics and employment issues. My co-panelists included Charlie Peck, CEO of Destination Hotels & Resorts, and John Beckert, CEO of ClubCorp, Inc. Destination Hotels & Resorts, based in Colorado, operates 34 hotels, resorts, and golf clubs, including a number of condominium properties at Wailea, Maui, including the deluxe Wailea Beach Villas, which just opened last month, which they manage. ClubCorp, Inc., based in Texas, operates 170 golf courses, country clubs, business clubs, sports clubs, and resorts. Recently it announced a partnership with golf professional Ernie Els and Haseko to develop a deluxe golf course, Hoakalei, on Oahu’s Ewa coastline. Mr. Peck, Mr. Beckert, and I had slightly different views on the issues facing Travel & Tourism for the next few years but generally agreed on many things. We all felt that if there are no catastrophic events with global fallout, business should continue to be good for the next two years. More people are traveling, and the supply of hotel rooms is growing only slowly right now. Summarizing the feeling, Jan Freitag, Vice President of Smith Travel Research, said, “It should be great through ’08.” One thing we definitely agreed on was the fact that there will be a great need for skilled workers in the hospitality industry in the coming years. There will be many opportunities in all areas of the Travel & Tourism industry. Talking to the University of Denver students at the conference, I found out that almost every one of them already had a job waiting for them when they graduate in May. They should have an exciting life ahead of them in this great industry, and I wish them well. Dr. Richard Kelley chats with Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management student Cassie Dando This week, I participated in the Resort Management Conference co-sponsored by the University of Denver at the historic golf resort at Pinehurst, North Carolina. It was an interesting event for a number of reasons. The venue was spectacular. The largest golf resort in America, Pinehurst has eight world-class courses where some of the most prestigious tournaments have been played, including the PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup Matches, and the U.S. Open. Golf legends such as Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus have all tested their skills at Pinehurst. There are five hotels within the resort offering a variety of accommodations and wonderful Southern hospitality. I stayed in the stately Carolina hotel, which opened its doors in 1901. The veteran staff made me feel right at home. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to meet the hotel’s legendary senior bellman, Ralph Gacomo. He started working there 67 years ago! Now, at age 95, he still reports to work two days a week! A number of students from the University of Denver’s School of Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management took advantage of their spring break to assist at the conference. It was a great opportunity and learning experience for these young professionals, and I enjoyed chatting with them during the three days I was at Pinehurst. about her upcoming job at the Four Seasons Santa Barbara. Every aspect of our stay was excellent: the view, the service, and the condo. The first thing I noticed was how immaculate the landscaping was. All the plants were beautiful and made one feel like they were truly in Hawaii. The pool, workout center, and shopping area right across the way was excellent and gives one something to do while spending time at the resort. Along with these aspects, the condo was beyond what we had originally expected; it was well decorated, clean, and had all the amenities needed. We especially appreciated the great service we received. If we happened to leave one dish in the sink, it was cleaned and put away by the time we returned. In each call, I acknowledged I didn’t have a definite date; I was enquiring for a basic price range. My two-minute call to Sheraton and Hilton was met with politeness – and coldness. The lady answering the phone for Outrigger properties was polite – and friendly, sounding like she wanted to help by offering an 800-number to call. Each of my three calls lasted the same length of time, but the Outrigger employee was the only employee who conveyed a sense of wanting to help. Originally from Napa, California, Scott graduated from Brigham Young University in Utah and has lived and worked in numerous cities around North America over the course of his career. Scott is currently on a whirlwind visit to all of our condominium resorts getting quickly acquainted with each property, the management, and staff of the condo/timeshare division. Escorting him on this tour is Bryon Hodge, who graciously returned to his old position on a temporary basis to oversee the condo/timeshare division during this time of transition. Fallen lines also disrupted communication systems. The storm also caused the temporary shutdown of Cairns International Airport, and rail service between Townsville and Cairns was suspended. Although our resorts in Cairns, Port Douglas, and Palm Cove escaped relatively unscathed, our Australian ‘ohana mobilized to assist both guests, whose flights were cancelled, and those in need in the surrounding areas. Our Australian ‘ohana has shown once again that the Aloha Spirit is alive and well Down Under. They have pulled together during this difficult period and are doing a magnificent job of providing service and security for our guests under adverse conditions. I am very proud of each and every member of our team. Our properties in Cairns, Port Douglas, and Palm Cove were spared from the storm’s destruction – other properties in Cairns did not fare as well. Outrigger on the Lagoon – Fiji Chef Vinay Ram Excels Again By Paul Hughes Outrigger on the Lagoon – Fiji Chef Vinay Ram exceled at the Hans Bueschken’s World Junior Chef ’s Challenge in New Zealand. Chef Vinay won a silver medal during the recent Junior Chef ’s Challenge held in conjunction with the 32nd World Chef ’s Congress from 12 – 16 March, 2006. The Hans Bueschken’s World Junior Chef ’s Challenge was held in Auckland and consisted of 18 competitors from other nations, including the US, Canada, and European nations. On behalf of Team Outrigger, I would like to congratulate Vinay on his outstanding achievement. This award, coupled with his recent success in the 2005 Battle of the Chefs, only augurs well for his future in the Hospitality Industry. The Pacific Rim’s top men and women gymnasts will be in Honolulu to compete in artistic gymnastics, trampoline, and rhythmic gymnastics. Countries competing are the United States, Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, and Singapore.
